2015 Mafia Awards Thread
2014 was a great year for mafia. With a wave of promising new players and the return of many of our veteran players the forum experienced some of the craziest game setups, great individual and team performances, terrible individual and team performances (we still love you), and more mason claim problems than ever before. Here is hoping to a great 2015 year of Mafia in Liquidia. This intro paragraph was totally not stolen from the previous two years.

1 Replaced in for Bugs in Mafia in the Himalayas Night 1 as mafia vanilla, only his second (!!) game ever. Caught up on 150+ pages from Day 1, managed to stay low enough on the radar and managed to endgame with Holyflare as the 2 out of 4 scummers remaining.
2 Mafia vanilla in Gaiden. This go was even better for him, I don't think he had too many scumreads at all and towards the end he probably had more people townreading him or was far low enough on people's lynch lists. Even if lynches had gotten off on Ras/WoS as more people suspected them, I would gamble he had a decent shot of finishing the job. A pretty good showing for only his third game in any case. Don't know about improving game as I obviously never played with him, so can't comment. But the mafia team in general fooled town pretty hard this game, worthy of adding a team nomination IMO. Ofc I'm new so can't compare to other mafia team nominations. Because the set-up was balanced, posts on time, and there was no way fucking drama could have happened. Maybe there was something with geript but I never read it and never understood it.

Ippo and Personality for unique. Ippo for the HP, and personality for the upgrades. I submit The New Personality Mafia for Most Unique Setup award. It was a personality game, meaning everyone in the game was a role; the role's name being the name of a famous player in TL mafia, and his ability having to do with his personality. In addition to this super cool concept, the players were encouraged to roleplay the personality they received, each role PM containing a few lines explaining the expected behaviour. What was hidden from the players was they were bonus for roleplaying; every role had a criteria that, if fulfilled, would grant an upgraded ability to the player. The results of your investigation posted in this manner will be subject to all alignment alterning abilities affecting those players during the phase in which you checked them.

Added a new category called community contribution for stuff like hosting voice/video mafia games, running hearthstone tournaments (still waiting BH), producing mafia podcasts, organizing moba inhouses, etc.
I'll start things off with nominating geript for his post game analysis in Newbie Mafia LX.
If anyone has suggestions for new categories or modifications to the current ones feel free to share. When nominating, its also helpful if you provide a brief description explaining why they deserve to win, since most of us likely either haven't been following the game or will forget 12 months from now.

Unless there was additional information the mafia didn't have access to (and thus that I lack), I don't feel like this is the best nomination.

I would actually disagree with you, sure that lian probably wouldn't carry the kill that night. But that's part of a trackers charm, they have to read and understand the thread and see whats going on. At the end of the day, lian was obviously not going to save himself because he thought mderg was town and was trying to get people to move.
Trackers have to take there information and the information in the thread and come out with a decent understand of what the game is actually doing. If you put thread actions together with his abilitys information (lian no movement) you should of come up with lian is town its time to move people if we can. But he hammered him.

Damdred I dont think you followed your own game. Ill explain my logic I cleared mderg as town in the last hour. I knew eden was scum but bats/lian were not there to vote in mylo (lol) mderg didnt want to switch and I couldnt get enough votes on eden.
The only other person I could have got lynched that day besides mderg who was clearly town to me was lian because edens vote was on him so I just had to hope he was bussing.
So I could have voted my 100% town mderg or my 90%town lian. I needed 4 votes because of tie breakers. Bats was afk I needed his vote. Its acualy bats fault for not being there too.
I was also really pissed off at him and wanted to teach him a lesson (that clearly didnt work)
I nominate new years eve for worst town performance if thats a thing. Putting that just on me in that situation as the only town trying to solve the game is actually just wrong.

Obviously in my recap of the game I didn't put the loss completely on you as town played horribly and not due to mafia interference (sadly not a category). And the loss isn't on you, a wtf moment isn't a blame its a huge head scratcher.
Tracking someone can clear them, like it would have cleared oats d2 since Scum won't hold powers that night. But that's another conversation.

Many players pinged mafia and looked at what they were doing throughout the game and figured out how they were tunneling on the wrong people for the wrong information and were willing to step back and see what the other people were doing. They were also able to put paranoia aside to lynch mafia d1 and narrow the lynch down to a pool of four players, (besides robik modkill) town had a pretty perfect execution besides a few fights.

Damdred is being modest. I'm nominating him for best individual town performance in Linux mafia.
It was his case and play under heavy pressure from the mafia team (and a couple donkey towns lol) that caught the first mafia and created the domino effect that ultimately resulted in a Night 1 concession. And HF's second scum loss in awhile. Just had to add that one in.

I'd like to make a nomination for VII Titanic Mini Mafia. I know that a lot of people have said that it was an overall team effort by town that won the game. These people might say that in such a well-played game, with such an overall high level of town play, it doesn't really seem right to nominate a single player. If someone wants to nominate the town for best team performance, they're welcome to do that, but that's not what I'm here for. I'm here to call attention to the underlying cause of town's great performance, a single player whose friendliness, scumhunting, and motivated play helped stabilize the thread and inspire others to action. A single player whose individual performance carried the entire town to victory.

I would humbly like to nominate Blazinghand for Best Individual Town Performance in VII Titanic Mini Mafia. I think his filter will speak for itself: (link). I would like to nominate Artanis for the Most Unique Setup award. He was able to create a big game with 26 players in which town lost right after D3 after 2 town lynches and 1 mafia lynch.
The game also contained refreshing ideas like:
- lynching after 24h ingame by shooting somebody.
- 2 ninjas with a total of 4kp which they were advised to use rather faster than later due to their wincon. At least the first shot. Because why the fuck not? Really fuck mafia if they shot one of them, fuck town otherwise. Nobody really knows why ninjas need kp anyway, but you can't get the Most Unique Setup award if you don't take some risks.
- 6 mafia with a total of 2kp until 3 die.
- A mafia spirit that can post in the thread under the name of the town spirit. For some reason the town spirit can also post things so who the fuck knows why really. Oh right, the town spirit might just be afk and then out of nowhere there is a blue post from the "town spirit" fucking up the thread with mayor WIFOM. You can't get the Most Unique Setup award if you don't take some risks.

I would like to nominate Artanis for the Best run game award.
In addition to nominating Artanis for the Most Unique Setup award I would also like to applaud and celebrate Artanis his decisions during his JOAT mafia game.
As a host and pupil of Blazinghand, (who can create big games that town loses after 3 ml), Host Artanis strongly believes in the RNG gods and starts his game with a 24h shootout lynch. Great Decision, why bother starting with a normal 48h plurality lynch when you can use rng?
Also modkilling people for inactivity after N1 should be praised. Why bother having some replacements ready in case somebody has an emergency? It's not like a day could only last 24h right? No, that last comment isn't fair to Artanis. The person did have 48 hours to show any form of activity and just didn't bother doing anything.

I joined this game a month ago when I was assured it would be balanced. I also recall somewhere Artanis saying he wanted to make a game with a low amount of nk. Or even none. I know I read it somewhere.
But then I come to the game and see mafia has 2kp, ninjas got 4kp and I do the math and I see 3 ml loss for town. All information I said in my first posts. So, saying I did it without knowing anything of the set-up is bullshit.
Then I got 6 people on my ass for no reason at all after a couple hours into the game when I am sleeping.
Then I see that the lynch mechanic and know I got decent shot for being shot.
Then I had to read the post of a guy claiming I was mafia and my plan was to 1 v 1 with a townie by letting the townie shoot me (as mafia) and then get that townie lynched due to this fact.
Then I had the same guy saying I should have scumreads if I were town, but that I wasn't a great mafia player.
Then I flipped and raged and got modkilled. I knew I was going to get modkilled when I posted my rage. But I was too angry. Portaiting that I get myself modkilled simply because I was angry at the set-up is bullshit. Which makes your entire post bullshit and makes you ill informed.
But hey, who cares really.

I am 1000% backing up the scum team nomination in TL Mafia LXX Guardians of the Galaxy for scum team of the year.
EDIT: In case this is needed the team was: Palmar and LightningStrike (mafia vanilla x2), sicklucker (rolecop), Toadesstern (godfather), and ritoky (roleblocker).
Each player had a role, Palmar had great leadership, ritoky did fantastic salvaging the RB slot, SL and Toad late game and yolo plays and LS left jack all despite getting tracked D2. This lot played like a team in every sense of the word.

Best run gameI would like to nominate Artanis for the Best run game award. In addition to nominating Artanis for the Most Unique Setup award I would also like to applaud and celebrate Artanis his decisions during his JOAT mafia game. As a host and pupil of Blazinghand, (who can create big games that town loses after 3 ml), Host Artanis strongly believes in the RNG gods and starts his game with a 24h shootout lynch. Great Decision, why bother starting with a normal 48h plurality lynch when you can use rng? Also modkilling people for inactivity after N1 should be praised. Why bother having some replacements ready in case somebody has an emergency? It's not like a day could only last 24h right? No, that last comment isn't fair to Artanis. Don't know about improving game as I obviously never played with him, so can't comment. But the mafia team in general fooled town pretty hard this game, worthy of adding a team nomination IMO. Ofc I'm new so can't compare to other mafia team nominations.

From the start of the game to the end, they were basically never under serious suspicion. They carefully avoided getting lynched, and managed their night actions and kp to force favorable mislynches. Although Damdred was caught by a Track and lynched D2, town lynched their own cop D3 thanks to roleblocks and by the end of N3 town had almost no effective roles left. rsoultin and ruXxar both did a good job of shrugging of suspicion in thread, and WoS played an excellent "lurking mafia" game, cleverly avoiding policy lynches no matter how often they were suggested

WoS came in with a plan, a plan to post minimally, every day, and do absolutely nothing, and never get lynched. And by god, he did it! Nobody even really suspected him, and when he did post, everyone was like "well maybe he's town". The ultimate plan, executed to perfection. This kind of Play makes us re-evaluate our ideas about policy lynches and the overall TL Mafia meta. Well done!

In a different game, wave gets lynched day 1 or 2, it working one game doesnt mean its a good play.
The problem with town this game is that everyone had a lot of preconceived ideas and didnt want to change their mind.

I'd like to nominate ruXxar for best newcomer 2015 as follows:
1 Replaced in for Bugs in Mafia in the Himalayas Night 1 as mafia vanilla, only his second (!!) game ever. Caught up on 150+ pages from Day 1, managed to stay low enough on the radar and managed to endgame with Holyflare as the 2 out of 4 scummers remaining.
2 Mafia vanilla in Gaiden. This go was even better for him, I don't think he had too many scumreads at all and towards the end he probably had more people townreading him or was far low enough on people's lynch lists. Even if lynches had gotten off on Ras/WoS as more people suspected them, I would gamble he had a decent shot of finishing the job. A pretty good showing for only his third game in any case.

I'd like to make three nominations; two for Best Play and one for Funniest Moment both regarding Tropical Storm Mini.
First, is day specific. Artanis[Xp] helped move a lynch away from ruXxar on day 1. Helped get Hopeless1der shot. Cop checked the godfather Trfel and then proceeded to lynch him despite the green check and followed up by pushing the last scum in rsoultin. On top of that, he was able to essentially crumb his green check on D2 in an understandable readable way while also not outting himself as the cop.
Second. Raynpelikoneet for tunneling the fuck out of scum all game long. As per normal, there were other misguided tunnels that he was able to get out of. But Day 1 he pushed the lynch towards Hopeless1der only to be diverted by Artanis to deconduo; pushed for Hopeless to be shot. Night 1 and the first half of day 2, he got himself out of a bad tunnel on Chezinu to nail the floundering Trfel to the wall and spent the rest of the game primarily pushing rsoultin with Artanis forcing her to go for a risky soup kill.
Third, after Hopeless1der got shot with the Storm Vote (a mechanic which lets vanilla roles have a majority vote for a vigilante shot during the night phase) Palmar posted this series of thoughts outing himself as blue.

Himalayas had some interesting moments. I couldn't contest that to be honest, but I debated voting the GlowingBear DT mislynch in that game for (the town collective's) biggest blooper of 2015. It was one of the worst lynches I've ever seen, the claim analysis was clear, rsoultin nailed it but for some reason others weren't able to see how the scum fakeclaim behaviour didn't line up with claimed checks (nor did they listen to her either).

It's not fair in the sense that GB tried his very best to be as scummy, bad and confusing as possible which is probably the only reason he got lynched there (besides very strong mafia play ofc).

I disagree, the lynch was bad (a lot of people wasted their votes and I was mislynched with 3 votes with 7 people in the game), plus no mafia would claim cop and claim a red check on someone else. All people need to do is lynch the red check to see if he flips red or miller.
But I understand the lynch solely under a gameplay POV (which means it isn't the worst lynch ever)

I submit The New Personality Mafia for Most Unique Setup award.
It was a personality game, meaning everyone in the game was a role; the role's name being the name of a famous player in TL mafia, and his ability having to do with his personality.
In addition to this super cool concept, the players were encouraged to roleplay the personality they received, each role PM containing a few lines explaining the expected behaviour. What was hidden from the players was they were bonus for roleplaying; every role had a criteria that, if fulfilled, would grant an upgraded ability to the player.
For example my role was:
Yamato
Each night pm the hosts a player and a role name. If they match you get a cop check on them. If you are incorrect you will be RB the next night.

There are plenty of people who give so much to keep this thing going, but I think this past year belongs to BH who takes over one of the most thankless jobs of doling out justice while people moan and whine about every little decision. In addition he runs a ton of games, especially newbie ones that ensure the community doesn't stagnate.

Man there was no random guesses, I'm super proud of the investigation I've done to guess the roles:
I think HTS is the exorcist for being OK with the plan of killing LS exo shoot someone
especially for this: "if LS is actually town (and we'd know that if there's an exorcist shot the next day)"
I think FF is acolyte for townreading Shining all the way except his first post, and for not giving Damdred credit for a implicit green check
and for this after the start of D2, when geript Shining and Dandel were dead: "So that was painful. 3 dead towns is pretty sad for day 2"
I think TT is grandier (or crusader) by POE p: TT is 100% not the exorcist

Wow there were several I'm leaving blank, absolutely cannot decide.
Especially individual mafia performance.....
Absolutely cannot decide between Toad/Artanis/Damdred/Holyflare - all large normals, difficult and unique situations for each they had to fight and adapt through and all came on top at the end. Has anyone else talked themselves out of a red check? I'm guessing it's happened at some point before my time.
So a personal shoutout to all four, because I feel all are deserving, esp in large games that can be slogs.

Onegu is happy to accept the award for most entertaining game. Onegu is actually surprised to beat Greymist. Onegu is glad people enjoyed his game. JAT, Koshi, and SL dont count as people for the record.

To be fair, to quote something marvellosity said in my first game on TL - you don't become a chess grandmaster overnight.
Everyone has to start somewhere. You aren't going to reach top tier for much of anything overnight or right away, unless you are simply born with a natural ability for a certain skillset, even then application of the talents you have will matter in certain situations. That only comes with experience.
edit: And yeah, I have ideas for a themed game as well, I'm hoping I can actually get one going after getting through the next mini.
