Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking. If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win. The town's goal is to lynch all the members of the mafia.
The game is typically very active, so the thread will get big quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game. If you do not have the time or patience to read the whole thread, do not play. I will not compensate for ignorance.
Rules:
Cheating: Cheating includes (but is not limited to): 1. Posting after death. (Ghosting) You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information. 2. Ruining the game by doing something like hand out your mafia's member list to the town. 3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role. 4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles. 5. Forged Private Messages (PMs) are allowed. Screenshots of PMs are not. 6. PMs from the moderator may be forged for private messaging to other players, but may carry certain consequences if abused. PMs from the moderator are NOT ALLOWED in public view, regardless of its truthfullness. 7. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip. 8. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts. 9. Betting items outside of the game in exchange for in-game benefits. 10. Sharing accounts with other players. Only you may post on your account. SPECTATORS AND GHOSTS MAY HAUNT, TAUNT AND FLAUNT, BUT NEVER REVEAL ANY INFORMATION (COMPILATION INCLUDED) Cheating is not tolerated here. The punishment will be severe.
Posting:
Mod Font: This is mod font. It is reserved for moderators. Please do not use it.
Question Font: This is question font. Use it to ask the moderators questions about the rules. Please do us a favor and read the rules before you ask anything.
Activity: You must post in this thread once per day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.
Smurfs:
On April 26 2011 13:22 mikeymoo wrote: Smurfs must PM the host because TL doesn't allow multiple accounts otherwise. If the host is unaware of smurfs, you (and/or your smurf) can be banned for having multiple accounts.
Spam: Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. Do not discuss Proleague here. Do not talk about Starcraft II here. Play Mafia here.
Editing: Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. This is the one part of the site where it is okay to be double posting, even triple-posting. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything.
Inappropriate posts: If you want to post something insulting or inappropriate and know the TL mods would have a problem with it elsewhere, don't post it here. If you do, a host will warn you or modkill you and request that you be banned from future games. The hosts have the final say on what is inappropriate. If you do not like how someone is talking to you, please PM a host, Qatol, or Flamewheel before involving the TL staff. If you are unsatisfied with how the situation is resolved, then you can appeal to the TL staff normally.
Reporting posts: The report button is a nice feature for regular TL, but not for this forum. We prefer to deal with things in house if possible to avoid confusion among the TL staff. If you have a problem with how someone is posting, talk to the host, co-host, Qatol, or Flamewheel before using your report button. Please do not use your report button for anything other than inappropriate posts which you feel are not being dealt with adequately.
Ban discussions: Please wait until this game is over to talk about modkills and bans resulting from this game.
Play to win. This means you play your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.
This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason without a ban. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.
You have been warned.
Voting rules:
1. Voting is done (in a separate thread, located here). Please keep votes there, and only vote there. Do not PM me your vote. 2. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote Qatol. Votes not done in the correct fashion will not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance. 3. No conditional voting. 4. You may vote for yourself. You may vote for anyone dead or outside the game; BUT IT WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES. 5. In the event of a TIE ALL candidates that are part of that tie are killed. 6. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain.
Signups:
This game is open to anyone. Signups will remain open until August 14 0000 KST.
Game-specific rules:
Modkills: This game does not follow the TL Mafia Ban List. If you are modkilled, your punishment will not go beyond being eliminated from this game. Please refer to it for questions about your punishment. If you want to use this game to sit out your ban, please PM Qatol or post in the Ban List.
Replacements This game uses replacements. Replacements will be made in the game until Day 5 Ends. If a player is modkilled during the designated time, then they will be replaced by a player on the replacement list.
Clues: There are NO clues.
PMs PMs ARE allowed in this game.
Time Cycle: This game will follow a CONCURRENT 48 hour day cycle. That is, ALL Nightly actions must be done at the same time as the day votes. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the deadline is 2200 KST, but that is subject to change. Credits: Thanks to anyone who has ever hosted a game. This list grows ever longer. Thanks to everyone who helped balance this game.
If you have not read all the rules, go back and do so. I will not compensate for ignorance!
NOTE: The following Role Post is taken in format from another Forum but is same in essential content, PM me if you need guidance on the roles and traits present.
TL Forumer (Townie): Vanilla TL Forumer, likes Starcraft overall, watches their regular fill of games via streams or live
Forum Moderator (Detective): The Moderator has the ability to check once a night to see if they are undesirable werewolves (Scum) or an Apprentice. Every other role will appear as a regular Forumer (Townie).
Rabid Werewolves (Scum): They are people attracted to TeamLiquid for the massive pool of pool of less-than-fit people they can easily turn into chew toys. More information will be given to the scum but will not be public knowledge.
Note that only the above roles are guaranteed to be in a game (i.e. 1+ exists of each role above, 0+ exists of each role below).
Banling (Journalist): The Banling can check for forumers with a hidden agenda to support the werewolves, as he is more often present than the Moderator. May check one person each night to see if he is a Detective, Corrupted, Sorcerer or Apprentice. Any other role will appear as a regular forumer to the Journalist.
Forum Troll (Corrupted): They are players who have an interest in supporting the werewolves (because of grudges against the Moderator/Banling or whatnot). They are detectable only by the Banling and return as a regular Forumer to the Moderator.
Stream Sniper (Godfather): Has a vested interest in taking over TeamLiquid or at least reducing its influence. He is aligned with Scum, but is not in contact with them until he scans one of them. He may scan for Scum, the Journalist and the Cop.
Apprentice: Only becomes active if his master is killed. Apprentices works just like their former master. If an Apprentice is in the game, the first one who scans him will make him his apprentice. All further scans on them will only return as "Claimed Apprentice" The apprentice does not know that he is one until he is scanned; and will NOT be informed of the role until he takes the scanner's place.
Streamer (Protector): May protect one person against an attack, by taking them aside every night for coaching, but can't choose to protect the same person two nights in a row and can never protect themselves.
Forum Star (Doctor): May protect one person each night. In case of an attack, the Doctor will be able to save the person from death, but the person saved will have no voting rights for the next day as they lie in their basement room recovering from their wounds. They are also forbidden from publicly speaking and PM (except to the GM). The survivor learns of the Doctor's identity and of the identity of one Scum attacking him. Cannot choose to protect the same person two nights in a row and can never protect themselves.
TRAITS
Rabid Fanboy #1 (Leader): May declare, once per game, that the leader of a vote will be replaced by someone else. His identity will be revealed if he uses his power. In the event of a tie, the number of people in the tie must equal the number of people who must die. The leader can substitute one or as many of the lynch targets. If he/she is part of the vote leader count, they may not substitute someone else for their place, but may pick someone else if they are tied with another person.
Rabid Fanboy #2 (2nd in Command): Will become the Leader if the current Leader is dead. There will be no more than one second-in-command at game start.
Rabid Fanboy #3 (3rd in Command): Will become the Leader if the Leader and Second in command are dead. There will be no more than one third-in-command at game start.
Addicted Watcher (Witness): Once per game, the Witness may try to see the nightly attack. Witness success rate increases by 20% each night (20% on Night 1, 40% on Night 2 etc). If successful, he learns the identity of one Scum in a scum-group that hunted that night. If no kill takes place, the Game Moderator decides whether the ability is used or not.
Rivals: These players hate each other obsessively, and must do everything in their power to eliminate their rival. If a person's rival is alive at the end of the game, they lose, no matter which side wins, if their rival/s is killed, they will in turn win if alive at endgame, and their side wins. They will know the name of their rival/s from the start.
Smurf Account (Thief): The player possessing this trait will be able to rob another player of his role and traits. The robbed player will die due to complications in the act of being robbed (read: He was killed by the thief). The Thief retains his Thief trait for the duration of the game, ie, he can keep robbing roles until the end of the game, or until he is dead. The Thief has a 33% chance to be caught, which would mean instant lynching. The chance of being caught doubles every time he steals a role. When he robs a role, his previous role will disappear, meaning he cannot go back to the role he had before.
Stalker (Spy): Can tell something about the other forumers' behavior based on their post. If a player has the Spy trait, he will have the ability to spy on another player, revealing clues to the role and/or traits of that player, but never the role or trait itself. Some clues may be useless, others not. The spy may spy on the same player again to try to obtain more information.
Forum Newbie (Cursed): Can be baited into becoming a troll. If a Cursed person is targeted by the Scum, they become one themselves. It will be revealed as a "no kill during the night". The Cursed will be unaware he is cursed until attacked by a Scum. A cursed apprentice that turns into a Scum loses his apprenticehood.
Forum Veteran (Blessed): Extremely level-headed and neutral, he is unflappable in the face of repeated trolling. A Blessed person will survive a scum attack, but only once (the next attack will be fatal as usual). Will be revealed as a "no kill during the night". The Blessed will be unaware he is blessed, even after an attack.
Perceptive (Attuned): Can tell if people are paying attention to his behavior. An Attuned person will know if someone has scanned them, and will randomly (50/50) know either their name or their role.
Short Fuse (Brutal): Can provoke another forumer into getting banned with a personalized insult. If lynched, has the power to immediately kill one person before being subdued.
Crusading Forumer (Vigilante): Is highly defensive and easily provoked. He may decide to use his one shot to kill anyone he wants once at night.

edit and what is the difference between a role and a trait?
As far as I understand it roles and traits are not mutually exclusive, so you can have one of each, e.g. you could be a vengeful townie, or a leader godfather, etc.
