Surprised the Bull doesn't have one of these yet, so I decided to make one.
Synopsis: Alistar is a support tank that can either jungle or go bot. His ability to CC an enemy is nonpareil, but he suffers from low lategame damage and getting countered by high uptime CC and true damage.
Skills: Passive: Trample A pretty good passive, in my opinion. Here's why:
- Ignoring unit collision helps you position for your CC's.
- The Trample Damage is useful in jungling, pushing, and fighting.
- You can watch the Trample timer (2 seconds) to help you maximize Sheen Procs huehuehue.
Q: Pulverize One of the best non-ultimate spells in the game. Use it to CC dudes in teamfights, protect your carry, secure ganks, blah blah. Max this first for the cooldown reduction and the AoE DPS. See below for information on how to W/Q.
Also, this spell makes Alistar a level 1 beast. So enemy teams will be less likely to invade a Jungle Alistar than they would an Amumu.
W: Headbutt In ganks, you'll use this to push enemies into favorable places (or to setup W/Qs if you can't manage that). In teamfights, you'll probably use this to protect your carry, and occasionally push enemies into a bad position.
Also, you can Headbutt minions, which may be useful as an escape tool!
E: Triumphant Roar Minor heal that helps you in lane sustain.
I think its main purpose is to proc Sheen and Trample though.
R: Unbreakable Will One of the hardest spells to use. You don't want to waste it by using it early, but it's also pointless to use it late (and I always do huehue). In ganks, this spell lets you run from behind enemy towers, since you can always use it to break out of a CC the enemy might try to use against you. In fights, use this, besides the damage reduction, for the extra AD.
Don't get poked down and baited into ulting for no reason.
Skilling Order: Q, W, E, R>Q>W>E. Max Q first for cooldown reduction, farming, AoE damage. Then max W for cooldown reduction. You can put a few more points into E if you're having some trouble laning for whatever reason.
Runes: AS (or ArPen or AD) Marks
- AS clears jungle slightly faster (I think)
- ArPen does more damage against low Armor targets, and makes your Sheen procs stronger.
- AD makes you push and farm better.
Flat Armor Seals
- Avoid getting beaten up by AD Carries and Jangle creeps.
MR/Level Glyphs
- Flat MR can be useful against strong earlygame casters.
- AS if you are a real bull who doesn't afraid of anything. 4Not OneBadBrad uses these.
- But if you use AS against Double AP you're a tard.
Movespeed Quints
- Don't be cheap. Alistar needs the positioning help.
- Gold/10 also works on Support Alistar.
Summoner Spells: Smite/Flash if jungling, CV/Flash or Exhaust/Flash if laning.
If you don't get Flash on Alistar you are noob.
Masteries: 0/9/21 for Support, 21/9/0 or 0/21/9 for Jungle. Player's choice really.
Builds: Start: Boots/3 Pots if jungling, Fairy Charm/Vision Ward/2xGreen Ward/1 Pot if supporting.
Build: Philo/HoG, and ALWAYS buy lots of wards. Buy Oracles when you think you can afford it (earlier if you're jungling, enemy is putting up lots of wards, or enemy has a stealth hero). Buy Sheen when you want the extra Deeps.
Endgame Items: Shurelia Reverie: If you don't buy this you're a derp. You need the active for positioning and supporting. Frozen Heart: The Other must-have CDR option on Alistar. Randuin's Omen: You get this for the active. FH is better on Alistar. Trinity Force: DPS and positioning. Force of Nature: Good against poke teams, help you position.
But always stack Wards and try to keep up Oracles
Jungle Alistar: Start Wolves/Blue, look for ganks starting at level 2. Focus on ganking, only clear camps when you either don't see any ganks, or need levels. Ganking with Alistar is tricky to get down, it's hard to write about. Try to watch the Featured Games, there's practically always a 2000+ Elo Jungle Alistar on the list.
If your blue gets stolen, do Wraith/Wolves to get to level 2 and proceed normally. Get a Fairy Charm earlier than usual too. This has never happened to me yet because Alistar's level 1 is strong. Usually, YOU'RE the one invading.
Support Alistar: Hide in the bush and heal your carry. Use your CC to protect your carry from enemy ganks/attacks, or to zone enemies and set up attacks of your own.
Alistar tends to work well with offensive laners like Jarvan, Pantheon, Blitzcrank, Graves, Corki, etc.
Also, since you have less farm than the Jungle Alistar, you need to play safer in teamfights. You will have a pretty strict role of carry protector (Jungle Alistar usually does this too, but he can play more offensively since he has items, and you don't).
How to W/Q: If you don't smartcast it. -Attempt to position yourself at max Headbutt range. It works below it, but it's harder to time the animations. -Use Headbutt. Make sure you use Headbutt first. It's easier if the enemy is inside Headbutt range when you click, because then there is no delay until the animation starts. -This is the tricky part: while in mid-animation, press Q. You only need to click it once, but there's no penalty for mashing it. -The end result should be you arriving at the opponent and stunning him. -If you pressed Q too early, Alistar will use Q and not W. If you pressed too late, Alistar will Headbutt the champ away and Pulverize thin air. -If you pressed it exactly, the opponent, when Pulverized, will seem to move towards you as they get stunned.
Only use this if you have no other way of reaching your opponent to Q (and don't want to burn Flash/Shurelia).

If that was the case, Jax would have already been nerfed too. It took a bit longer to actually nerf Sona and Janna, and both where first pick/ban status at a major tournament before that.

Great OP, I like it. Contains a lot of info without being too clustered. Only criticism I have is the fact you say his ability to CC people is nonpareil, while Nautilus does a better and more reliant job at keeping fools where they belong. Other than that, no criticism.

That link is nearly a year and a half old, and completely outdated in terms of current Alistar theory. It's time to start over IMO.

He means high elo solo q, not tourney play. Ali jungle is ridiculous at every elo, if u can find 1 smart teammate to take advantage of your ganks, or 1 dumb enemy that refuses to respect that you can gank from anywhere, including behind their tower.

Just gonna post some shizzle about support ali, since it's still viable and useful despite his status as cow king of the jungle.
Runes:
Flat armor marks - BiS since you'll be going bot-lane. You're a melee, you're gonna take hits and creep damage.
Flat armor seals - Same as marks. Highest valued seals and standard on like every role nowadays.
Glyphs - Either flat mres or scaling mres. Whatever you desire if up to you, but personally i stick with flat mres because of the threat some supports can be in lane (leona, sona, blitz)
Quints - Gp10. Pretty self explanatory
I wouldn't recommend trying on with the combination of 2 ms quints, 1 gp10 quint, 8 gp10 seals and 1 armor seal on the cow, because you're already weak enough in lane, especially against heavy harassers like kog, graves and sivir.
Masteries and summoners:

It gives you all the needed stuff in the utility tree aswell as extra armor+mres. Do NOT underestimate awareness on supports, you're going to be behind in levels in general as you won't be farming and laning phase isn't the entire game.
If you plan on playing arranged i recommend taking 2 points away from either hardiness or resistance and get wealth. You could take 2 points from awareness aswell. Having an extra ward at lvl 1 helps you secure your jungle without having to sacrifice the typical tri-brush/lane-brush/dragon control that you will need for the first minutes of the game.
Flash/exhaust. Flash is a must, exhaust is just good for saving your carry and securing kills.
Skill order and item build:
Go either QEWQ or QWEQ then R > Q > E > W. You can do a QEWE or QWEE then R > E > Q > W if you plan on having more sustain for your support, but the damage from Q really helps with ganks and burst.
Start items is either boots+2 wards or faerie charm+3 wards+2 pots (4 if you got wealth). Get philo -> hog along with boots 1 before the game progresses too far. Make sure to always ward, buy wards and get oracles if required.
Laning phase:
Make sure to always have lane-brush control. On alistar, and other melee supports, this is needed to a much larger degree simply because you can't trade with ranged champs. It also helps a ton when your jungler comes because it will make your WQ easier to hit. Try to have as much presence as you can against weaker lanes (soraka+carry, support+ashe).
Also you're the best counter against blitz. Q'ing when he grabs is stronk.

Alistar was permabanned in the Solomid Invitational recently.

Hmmm no love for the cow but I've been going alistair junglenow with the new SotAG and they have been the easiest games i've had in awhile, if you time your ult you can build mostly hp run in, annoy them knock someone to your team, run out.
my most recent build ended up being SotAG, zhonyas, iceborne, warmogs, banshees, frozen heart
but I go quill to boots, to SotAG, to merc treads, then giant belt, the iceborne/frozen heart armor item (forget what it's called) and go from there. pretty reliable build.
also go max hp yelllows MS quints, whatever for red's and blues, think hybrid pen and scaling MR not positive though
think my runes are 5/22/3 with 5 offense in cdr and dual edged, 3 in move speed

I've played him 6 times in gold mmr normals, 2 times in plat V/IV mmr ranked. all wins

Pulverize (Q) mana cost reduced to 65/70/75/80/85 from 70/80/90/100/110 Headbutt (W) mana cost reduced to 65/70/75/80/85 from 70/80/90/100/110 Unbreakable Will (R) damage reduction reduction increased to 70% at all ranks from 50/60/70%

yeah i guess i didn't say that or maybe i did, but he's getting nerfed soon because of how scary he is in the jungle... seriously its just a free win. people don't know though

His clear feels terrible still, even before that incoming nerf. In the few times I've tested it out vs ai since the patch, it still feels like I need to pick up a madreds at some point to be able to continue jungling at all. I might be doing something wrong though, because better players seem to be having success.

his clear is pretty slow, one thing you have to do is cast your spells a lot like you do when you're using any sheen item, wait for the buff to disappear before you cast again. your job isn't to clear your jungle, you want to clear a buff gank, clear a buff, gank, clear something, wolves/gank, back, clear 2 camps, gank, repeat. it's pretty easy to at least blow a flash in any lane
