Marcus "Dyrus" Hill, the top laner of Team SoloMid, is the star of the 38th episode of my 'Grilled' interview series.
Some of the topics discussed: - If Epik Gamer could have won S1 and their level during his time there. - How he came to join TSM and the role he has played within the team. - How much of his performance was to blame for TSM's struggles against Asian teams. - Comparing his top lane style to that of the elite Korean top laners. - Why the concept of mastering 3-4 champions a key for Dyrus now. - The top laner he would trust with his life.

Damn Dyrus talks alot haha I really like the interview tho, alot of interviewers would have tried to artificially regaign some sort of presence in it and be annoying. Here you gave dyrus tougth provoquing questions and he was able to speak all he had in his mind, gave the interview a very unique and warm feeling.

Gj again Thorin, love your interviews. Hope to see more !

Great interview,
audio is a bit off though? It's perfect for all the other interviews but combine background noise with Dyrus' normally low/monotone voice I have a hard time listening to it in the background (I usually listen to these while I'm doing other things..)
Really appreciate the efforts

Hey Thorin, I was wondering if you had written transcripts of these interviews? Would love to follow your interviews but I can't watch due to bandwidth/lack of non blackberry internet problems.
I totally get if there isn't any plans to transcribe them or you just don't want to as I am a minority, but I'd love to know! Thanks.

What I like about these interviews is that it's genuinely good content. A lot of League content producers (especially YouTube ones) produce content for the sake of getting attention and more views.

These interviews are really great, but I'd like to see minor tweaks to make this series even more awesome.
1) Dyrus brought up a great point on the importance mastery of specific champions of the game, and how he felt other players had dedicated their art of mastering a couple of champions to perfection. One thing I feel this series lacks is the players discussing the intricacies involved in mastering specific champions, and their philosophy behind utilizing them to their fullest degree. Of course, many professionals would be reluctant to discuss these matters in too much detail since these things are essentially tricks of the trade. However, it wouldn't hurt to discuss these issues since it is makes these players tick.
The insight these players have to offer on the champions they have mastered are enormous - how these players first got inspired to play these champions they were known for, any revelations they had while practicing with it, if they hit a brick wall during practice or in competitions due to shifts in the metagame or facing an opponent who brought a different approach to the game, and if they saw anybody else playing with it that made them think again about these champions. The possibilities would be endless.
2) I feel like some players were uncomfortable with answering questions regarding the Asian League of Legends scene. People like Froggen, who have practiced in Asia, who have more stories to tell about such topics, will have so much more depth to his answers than someone like Ocelote, who only has a couple of games against RapidStar to base his opinions on the Asian scene in general. It would be more fair on people like Ocelote to ask questions on specific opponents he had faced such as RapidStar, Zz1tai and SuNo. The difference in quality between Ocelote's answers regarding the European scene and the Korean scene was just stupendously large.
Of course, if a player happens to follow the Asian scene with interest even if he doesn't have the most personal anecdotes regarding such issues, he could provide interesting answers as a spectator with professional gaming experience. Otherwise, questions regarding this issue will start to get pretty stale. Professional gamers will start naming random Asian professionals they have met in tournaments or have heard of as being great, without having much backstory or reasoning behind it. In this particular interview, it looked as though Dyrus had more colourful anecdotes of training on the EU server against famous players such as Wickd, than of his anecdotes of Maknoon or Expession, for example.
3) I was kind of surprised how swiftly this interview skipped over TSM's most successful period, then proceeded to focus hard on their failures against Korean teams. Of course this is an issue that many people were interested to hear about, but I felt that this subtext of "why did you fail so hard against the Asians" dominated the interview way too much.
I would have liked to have heard Dyrus' thoughts on the games against CLG EU in MLG Anaheim, the rivalry against CLG NA, their face-offs against Moscow 5 and many other topics that made TSM such a memorable team last year. TSM's downfall against the Korean teams wouldn't have been such an issue if they weren't such a big deal back then. I felt this interview fell short when it comes to giving depth and insight into TSM's most successful period. I really didn't feel like listening to Dyrus give what seemed like rehearsed answers on why TSM had failed so hard throughout the entire interview.
Perhaps for fans who had supported TSM through and through, this interview provided much needed closure on what came a shock to many Western fans, but as an outsider who only got to know TSM through their failures against the Korean teams, I wanted more emphasis on the other aspects of his career.
