The best top laner was discussed in IEM. I remember the casters said something like maknoon and shy were the best top laners in the world. But today SWL maknoon got completely destroyed by Stanley. Stanley using Shen 3-0 maknoon Elise withou any jungler help. The second basically was the same situation. I know that one match does not mean everything, but I still think there is a skill gap between Stanley and maknoon.
So who do u think is the best top laner in the world now?
I believe pdd is the best.

I believe there is no such thing as 'the best top laner'.
I believe that 1 game is not a good sample.
I believe League of Legends is a teamgame and it doesnt matter how good you are individually if you suck as a team.

I'm hesitant to call Stanley the best top laner in the world given how historically shaky his 1v2 ability has been. His 1v1 laning has always been stellar, but having less than outstanding 1v2 is a very exploitable weakness in the way the game is currently played.

I am currently writing a blog over this topic, but focused solely on Korean players. It's hard enough to judge the strengths of players from the same region. With so many factors influencing cross-regional games such as lag for online tournaments, jet-lag and crowd advantage in the case of LAN tournaments, limited number of games to judge from, the differences in schedules and the obvious fact that I know next to zero about foreign players apart from their cross-regional games makes judging individual talent next to impossible. Here are my thoughts so far on Korean top-laners.

http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=404053
http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=404212

I believe that two elite top-laners from Korea have competed in SWL Season 2, namely Maknoon and Expession, and they had varying performances. Maknoon has been getting manhandled by a lot of people since his successful OGN campaign, and I'm not sure if this is him slacking off, or if he is being outclassed. I'm guessing a bit of both. Expession on the other hand, has been stomping faces against a lot of people. Although his team has been performing very poorly, he had very good lane performances in general. What did you think of Expession's performance against PDD and Caomei?

I'd say Stanley, Shy, Maknoon, PDD and Caomei are top 5 in no particular order. But like someone said we can't really pick one and say he's the best because so much stuff changes in game.

Expession deserves to be on there. Who you bump out depends on how you value various traits. For example, Caomei is probably the weakest out of all of those in terms of 1v1 laning ability by a wide margin. But he's a proficient 1v2 laner, and has a good sense of map movement/teamfight execution.

How many times have we actually seen the very best top laners from each region square off against one another? Do we even have enough number of games to judge from?

Here's a list of cross regional games between famous top-laners from Europe, China, Korea and Taiwan. I don't think we should even be attempting a list without watching all of these, otherwise we'll just be listing whoever left the most impression from a couple of matches we happened to catch.

sOAZ versus Stanley: 4 games from IPL5
sOAZ versus Reapered: 4 games from IEM Cologne
sOAZ versus Flame: 1 game from IPL5, 3 games from IEM Katowice, 1 game from IEM VII World Championship
sOAZ versus Shy: 1 game from IEM Katowice
sOAZ versus Caomei: 6 games from IPL5

Darien versus Stanley: 3 games from S2 World Championship
Darien versus Flame: 3 games from IPL5, 3 games from IEM Katowice, 1 game from IEM VII World Championship
Darien versus Shy: 2 games from IEM Katowice, 3 games from IEM VII World Championship
Darien versus Ssumday: 3 games from MLG Dallas Winter Championship International Exhibition
Darien versus Caomei: 1 game from Tencent Games Arena Grand Prix Winter showmatch, 2 games from IPL5
Darien versus PDD: 2 games from S2 World Championship, 1 game from Tencent Games Arena Grand Prix Winter showmatch

Stanley versus Shy: 4 games from S2 World Championship
Stanley versus Maknoon: 2 games from S2 World Championship, 2 games from SWL S2
Stanley versus Expession: 3 games from Battle Royale
Stanley versus Caomei: 3 games from NVIDIA Game Festival 2012, 2 games from ESL Go4LoL Pro Asia Season 1, 3 Games from SWL S1
Stanley versus PDD: 1 game from NVIDIA Game Festival, 1 game from ESL Go4LoL Pro Asia Season 1, 4 games from Battle Royale

PDD versus Reapered: 3 games from Battle Royale
PDD versus Expession: 5 games from Battle Royale, 2 games from SWL S1, 2 games from SWL S2
PDD versus Shy: 5 games from Battle Royale, 1 game from S2 World Championship

Caomei versus Reapered: 1 game from Azubu The Champions Summer
Caomei versus Expession: 1 game from Azubu The Champions Summer, 3 games from SWL S1
Caomei versus Flame: 1 game from IPL5

I've watched less than 10% of the games, can remember maybe a couple at most, and the details are sketchy at best. I'm not qualified to talk about this issue in any shape or form. How many of you here have seen say, more than a quarter of the games? I mean, you would need to have the most skilled top-laners your region completely listed out in your head, then use the above games to cross reference the relative skills of each gamers, which is a completely retarded method of ranking gamers. But I can't even do that!

SKT T1 (2nd team) Impact this guy is gold waiting to shine, terrorized botlane with SBS and I think it was chauster or doublelift who once said they were the only bot lane in KR to beat them. Since then he has transitioned between teams (storm, tempest, storm again, skt t1) and switched to playing Top. from a potential side of things: Impact.
From currently proven and on top teams: Cao Mei and Expession

Isn't top lane too snowbally to judge individual performances? Maknoon has said Shy is better than him in the same tournament where Mak dominated Shy in lane.

Gotta watch trends over a long period of time.

Only if you're using "who won lane" as the only measurement.

Decision making, map movement, teamfight execution, playing from behind, etc. It's really narrow-minded to look at top laners only in terms of how they do in lane. If that were the only way to judge them, then Caomei wouldn't be top 5.

And it IS possible to judge a player on how well they play, not just how well they did. You should be able to analyze a player's play completely regardless of the actual result of the game--it's just that most players have a hard time analyzing a player's play completely disjoined from the game's results (a player doing well makes people ignore their mistakes, while a player doing poorly accentuates them).

It fluctuates a lot based on patch, meta, lan vs not lan and day to day.

Plus, surely at some point you can no longer distinguish yourself with 1v1 capabilities? The skill-cap ceiling for dueling is high but not infinite. Your actual abilities as a solotop laner will eventually cap itself out and the only way to distuinguish yourself at that point is with versatility, consistency under pressure, and mostly team-plays.

It's hard to say the best per se. Alot of top laners play the game differently based upon how the team works. HSGG is a good example of a mainly support/tank top laner, hes not top class but you can never really say how good he really is because not too many other top laners exclusively play that role.

Most korean top laners are quite team orientated threats. They have tended to go for bruiser/damage type champions who can snowball and be a massive threat to the rest of the team. This makes it quite volatile, small slipups can snowball the lane heavily as can jungle presence thus it is hard to call player x to be the best here.

Then there are other top laners like stanley who almost always builds against his lane opponent. If you study his builds, he will almost always build to survive the lane, bully it then be a threat because hes pummeled the opponents top laner . That is how he crushed maknoon's elise as shen. Most Shen's build Sunfire+randuins/warmogs. Elises natural kit counters this, but stanley builds mr and enough damage that he just crushes elise.

Finally you have people who like assasin top (voyboy is someone that comes to mind). Total snowball or bust.

When you start breaking top laners down like this, you can easily see why there is no possible way to name someone as the best top laner. how do you value someone like soaz who can play some of the most versatile tops from tanks to assassins to nidalee. On the flipside, what happens when you have someone that is godlike on a few tops but if they are banned out then what?

Some quotes of this topic. Hopefully we could gather more quotes from around the world.

The Manager of CJ Entus Blaze and Frost. (When asked if there were any players he wished to have under his wing outside of his current roster during his interview on the Korean LoL talk show "Killing Camp")

"There's one Korean player, and one foreign player. First player would be Maknoon... The foreign player would be PDD. If we divide the laning styles into two spectrums, Maknoon represents the epitome of aggressive play, and Woong represents the reactive style of play. PDD embodied both styles."

Stanley of Azubu Taipei Assassins. (When asked who was the more difficult top-lane opponent between PDD and Maknoon during his interview on Inven after his S2 World Championship victory)

"It is of course Maknoon. Maknoon alone was powerful enough to influence our strategies."

(When asked to pick the top three players in his position during his interview on Inven)

"Maknoon. Reapered and Shy."

Maknoon of Najin Sword. (When asked about Expession of Najin Shield during his AMA on Inven after his OGN victory)

"Expession is the only guy that overwhelms me in terms of pure game sense and talents."

(When asked to pick the top three top-laners in Korea)

"I'll excluding myself from the list. Expession would be my first pick, then Shy, and Ragan."

Stanley needs to prove that he's vastly improved at 1v2 play to be a contender. His 1v1 play is immaculate, but half the time 1v1 lane play isn't relevant anymore. And historically Stanley's 1v2 ability has been suspect--often over-estimating his champion's strength and getting himself killed in situations where he thought he was stronger than he actually was.

BasedGodHotShotGeeeeeeGeeeeee; only choice. I mean, is there a top laner that consistently loses his top lane? That's like uber talent right there.

Maknoon gets a lot of help in toplane... The team was originally designed around him.

No more nonsense about NA top laners. You can mention that Mega is doing well in NA LCS but in the big picture, he's still got a lot of learning to do.

My top 3 is Stanley, MakNooN, and Shy. In my eyes, these three are tried and true; meaning they can carry their team if given the opportunity. Even if they don't carry in the literal sense, they impose a respectable amount of map pressure with how they play. Yango brings up the good point of how Stanley isn't as experienced as his Korean counterparts at 1v2 lanes but I actually think he's improved, but I'll have to check SWL and other Asian leagues to make sure.

Reapered has the talent but he's entirely unrefined. He has the mechanics but I believe his decision making is lacking.
Expression I keep hearing about but I haven't watched enough games to see his game sense and talent. Anyone with VODs of examples?
Flame I'll mention because I think he's improved a lot since 6-12 months ago. Obviously not as strong as Shy but I think Shy is rubbing off on Flame if IEM Worlds is any indication.

Edit: PDD shares the same symptoms as the rest of iG: extremely talented, diverse champ pool but often too trollzy (imoimo). Often times I can't tell when they're serious and when they're "trying something out".

iG's tendency to "innovative/troll/unorthodox" play has a lot to do with the fact that they end up playing WE most of the time, and iG feels like he's incapable of beating WE head on lategame so they feel a constant need to try out new things.

PS: Caomei #1

l0l, can't tell if srs about PS. But you're right about iG's game play. Having to live in WE's shadow, you really have to shake things up against them.

About Caomei, yanger and I talked about him and how he fits so well into WE's lineup. He used to be a joke of a top laner but he's made serious improves in the past year. At IPL5, he really brought his A game.
But in comparison with the Koreans and Stanley, WE doesn't run plays through Caomei. He knows how to 1v2 like a boss now though.

The game that got Expession some recognition amongst those more familiar with the Chinese scene.

Najin Shield versus Team WE in the group stages of Stars War League Season 2.

Not that I think he's in the same realm as Shy, Stanley, Maknoon, or Reapered, and maybe its just the quality of competition he's facing in EU LCS, but Darien looks so fucking scary these days after a relatively quiet period

Put into purely a 1v1 dueling perspective, who is usually regarded as the most dominant top laner?

There are some players who when put into a strict 1v1 situation, I've almost never seen lose such as Expression, Ssumday, or Stanely.

To be fair I saw expression play almost exclusively Elise, so I can't really judge that well. Does anyone know what his strongest characters are besides Elise and Renekton?

Also, I know Olaf has been falling out of favor for most top players, but at a certain point, almost every top laner was required to master him. Who do you guys think have the best lane bullying Olaf, cause I always found a good olaf very entertaining to watch.

I dont know, but anytime anyone asks maknoon about his skills/power in top lane he always mentions Expression as a large reason.

I believe many Korean fans would rate the likes of Ssumday, Expession, and Flame as having some of the strongest laning phase of any top-laners in the Korean scene.

Expession once put down Vladimir, Kenen and Nidalee as his strongest champions in an interview. There's supposed to be a legendary match where Najin Shield was losing 1 kill to 12 against psw Ares (Ssumday's previous team) but Expession single handidly won them the game with his exceptional Nidalee. If you have DAUM potplayer downloaded, try searching for the match between psw Ares and Najin Shield. He also was pivotal in Najin Shield's run to IPL5 Korean qualifier finals, with an awesome Malphite showing against Najin Sword. You can check out his Irelia against Shy during their encounter in the latest OGN tournament, where he did quite well during the laning phase.

Ragan did pretty well with Olaf. His performance with Olaf in the Olympus The Champions Winter season is how he got a name for himself.

Do you know what Flame's best champions are, or any really good VoDs of him?

Also, wasn't Reapered's Olaf very famous, or is it just cause he put SKT1 on his back during that one tournament where they beat Fnatic in the grand finals?

Wings of death is the best top laner hands down. Always play's 1v2 lanes and dominates them, never loses 1v1 either i imagine, which you never see because people are so scared of his 1v1 he's always 1v2ing.

Actually I think Stanley's weakness is lack of roaming.

Anyone knows who is the greater lane beast between pdd and expression?

Do you know what Flame's best champions are, or any really good VoDs of him?

Also, wasn't Reapered's Olaf very famous, or is it just cause he put SKT1 on his back during that one tournament where they beat Fnatic in the grand finals?

Flame is known for his Irelia and Nidalee. His champion-pool isn't quite as large as the other elite top-laners of Korea, but he is getting there. He did very well during the IPL5 Korean qualifiers, as well as against Shy during the Olympus The Champions Winter season semi-finals. He didn't do that well against Ragan, nor did he perform that well in international tournaments, but he can be incredibly deadly if he is in the right condition. Try searching for Korean IPL5 qualifier VODs, if his OGN matches are unavailable for you.

I wouldn't label Reapered as a killer top-laner, and he likes to play a variety of champions in order to out-smart the enemy. He is highly regarded for his mind, but I don't think anybody here truly believes that he is a laning beast by any means. You have to appreciate Reapered for what he is, a mastermind strategist, not a walking highlight reel.
