But they serve no real purpose in a tournament beside being distracting and difficult to follow (esp. for someone not very familiar with the game). How does one explain all the different Corki to a new player?

So I was curious and decided to look at Group C to see what needs to happen at tonight's games for teams to advance. I'll spoiler it in case people haven't seen the VODs yet or don't know current group standings.
+ Show Spoiler + StarTale and Xenics are both fairly safe, although neither is confirmed. The Xenics vs StarTale match to start off the night will be the most important match for both teams, as it'll determine which team could go 3-0 in the group. If Xenics wins vs ST and then loses to Na'Vi, it's possible for ST, Na'Vi and Xenics to be in a three-way tie. If ST beats Xenics, then it should come down to Xenics vs Na'Vi(if Xenics wins then they advance with ST, both tied at 2-1, Na'Vi and CJ at 1-2 each. If Na'Vi wins, then ST and Na'Vi advance either tied 2-1 or with ST 3-0, dpending on result of CJ vs ST).
For Na'Vi to advance, the easiest way is to win vs. Xenics and hope StarTale goes 3-0. If Na'Vi loses to Xenics, then they need Xenics to 3-0 and for CJ to beat ST to force tiebreakers.
For CJ to advance, they need to win vs StarTale, have Xenics 3-0, and then win tiebreakers.
Not looking great for CJ, and Na'Vi is really gonna depend on ST to 3-0 so they can avoid the tiebreakers.
I think this is all correct, if not I'm sure someone will catch it and I can fix it.

Apart from that, the skins are the primary product Riot sells. It is very good advertisment for them. Showing to the casuals that real pros dont use skins would surely not be in their best interest.

Some skins do legitimately give an advantage. It's a small advantage, but it's still one nonetheless. Like Frostfire annie's passive is much harder to see than regular annie's. Any of the "flying" skins look like they're moving the hitboxes when they do their flying animation even tho their hitboxes dont move and can be a little annoying.

Today we have got a bunch of interesting matches. Xenic storm has two games to prove they are as strong as everyone thinks. Startale has to show that loco is more than just a poster boy and navi can still make it through the group and show the world how dangerous could be. Last part relies on them beating xenics sto though, arguablyy one of the favorites for this tourny placing 3rd last season and showing a good game last wedensday. Who will go to round of 8? All we know for sure is that CJ is going to need a miracle

This is hard to call. The classic Corki not only is "flying" on something, he is also flying on something with wings. The UFO Corki, on the other hand, does not have wings. The point is, skins are ALWAYS confusing to new players, no matter how trivial the modification may be. Not to mention that skins serve no advantages whatsoever in a tournament setting. In casual games it's fun to play with a skin to look "cool", but this has no place in competitive gaming.
The only reason they are allowed, I think, is because Riot wants them to be allowed (so people don't feel stigmatized about buying skins). If the tournament was ran KESPA-style I am sure all skins would be banned already.

If people can't understand that UFO corki and Urf corki are exactly the same, but just look slightly different then this isn't the game for them, nor is any other game. "Why does that corki look weird?" "Oh that's just a skin, makes him look different but does nothing." "OMG I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS GAME AT ALL WHY DOES HE LOOK DIFFERENT?!?!!?"<------ this really won't be the case you know.

People are dumber than you think.

Considering that tourney games tend to be commentated, and the commentators tend to say the names of a champion at least half the time when the camera is on him, I really don't think there's any sort of significant confusion. Plus there's always the abilities of a champion, you know? "man this champ is pretty uninspired, all his abilities do the same thing as corki's abilities!"

People have common sense to figure out what's what dispite the different skins.
