I love how they nerfed the gunblade because:
It was too good on Akali.
It was too good in dominion.
When they could easily just nerf Akali and replace it with a different item in dominion (like the did for the Doran's items --> prospector items etc)

Gunblade was too strong anyways. Your suggestion would just fix the symptoms, but not the cause. Which would lead to more and more problems in the future.
They possibly nerfed Gunblade a bit too much, but it's still decently efficient. They definitely aren't too far off the mark now.
If some champs suffer a lot from the Gunblade nerf, it only means that those champs were problematic anyways - they only worked with Gunblade. Give those champs some carefull buffs to compensate and the game will reach a much healthier balance.

Scarra, possibly best Kat player in the world, begs to differ. He strongly dislikes Rylai's for the most part, as it's incredibly situational. My experience supports those statements. Gunblade -> Deathcap is superior to any Rylai's builds. Reason being is that Gunblade was the one single item who offered most DPS gain for your ult and Rylai's being a 3k gold investment for 80 AP.

Saw some people rushing sorcs/guise/some AP item (revolver or NLR) for massive magic penetration (and harass damage) early on, especially on people not building resistance. Is it just too weak to transition into lategame?

It delays your dcap and isn't that good vs people who actually build MR, reducing 40 magicress when someone has 180 doesn't do that much, it's good in lane on champs with high base dmg on their spells though.
