Don't trash the subforum
I kinda think it's a privilege to have it, and I also feel a bit of pride over the fact that our threads, although sometimes teetering dangerously close, never devolved to the brain-dead level of the DotA/HoN (pre-mod-intervention) thread. Contrary to Chrispy I think the thread had a significant amount of good content, and even if wrong it was posted with (usually) good intentions. Lets keep it that way.

Do's and Don'ts
Do - Do call MIAs. Not everyone is equipped with gosu Starcraft map awareness. I would say 90% of LoL players zone out when they are in lane. Do your teammates a favor and let them know when they could be ganked. - Last hit. This is where your early game gold comes from, and it's important to try to get as close to 100% of each creepwave as possible. Early game item advantages snowball into mid to late game dominance.
Don't - Don't auto attack creeps as soon as you reach your lane. Pushing your lane is bad. It leaves you very open to ganks from the enemy jungle at level 2-3 (hello Shaco) - Don't facecheck brushes. You will always have an ally that has some sort of projectile skill. Whether it be a Mundo Axe, Ashe Volley, or Lux Bind. If the entire enemy team is sitting in that brush and you walk in, you are a free kill. (hello Garen) Sometimes, that one free kill and become a free Baron for the enemy team because your team cannot fight a 4v5 - Don't overextend. Farming is fabulous, everyone loves gold. But if the entire enemy team is MIA and you're pushing past that dead top tower to farm, it's probably a wise idea to back. Whenever you are farming a huge creep wave, immediately look up and see where the enemies are.
Yiruru's Whip of Love
Learn how to Last hit at Towers: (In General) -2 Tower Hits + Hit = Melee Creeps on most heroes, might need 2 hits on Champions with Low AD -Tower Hit + 2 Hits = Ranged Creep
You WILL end up at least +100 gold from doing this, most likely more =[ Wrist every time someone randomly hits a creep and the tower gets it right after.
Watching the map should also be in the Do list.
For the people with no map awareness, here is Yiruru's guide to improving it. (This is so I don't end up with NeoIllusions baddis that die after 4 people walk past two wards to gank them. 1) Download BW 2) Get on ICCUP 3) Host a game called "D- ZvP No DTs"
Anyone have anything else to fit in here?

ETO? I'm not sure, however maybe you mean ELO, which is the number that rates you as a player in the game to match you against even opponents
edit: completely skipped your recommended items question sorry. for most champions the recommended items are NOT the best for the champion, however they can be a decent guideline for when you're starting out until you have a better feel for the champion, and the game itself. I would say look at the stats on the recommended items and decide for yourself if you think it will help you in that particular game, they are a good place to start
|
I'm not exactly a newbie to the game, however I suppose this question stays on topic. I noticed a lot of you vets were talking about normal ELO (for example Brees being 2200? WTF?) but I could swear they removed the ability to scour the logs to find what your unranked ELO is. Is there a way around this that I am not aware of? It would be kinda cool to know.

You should add the player list and their in-game summoner names.
+ Show Spoiler +I just realized I never got myself added to that list. My summoner names are Unmay and Nathan Fillion.

this.. everything else that should go here is already fitted in to the wiki.. I liked the format of our old opening post with the videos, and then the links to streams, the player list, the quick run down of thread/forum rules, etc.., so if you want to fit some of that in to here it would be ok..
If this is to be the future, Read this before posting thread, I feel it could use some of that as well as maybe a mod note, referring to this post

Probably have a Do's/Don't's section for newbies... I can only think of a few Don't's right now so go ahead and start one I guess.

Rating: ***** (5) Stars
Review: Pros: After reading this guide my skill and game sense improved astronomically. My APM is at an all time high of 30+ and my KDR is almost 1:1. This guide made leveling 1-30 a breeze. You might ask "what about bad teammates? This is a 5v5 or 3v3 game!" My response is what about them? The guide explains how to deal with idiots and manipulate them into being useful.
Cons: This guide was unable to cure cancer.
Additional Information: This is a good place to start for beginners. If you have never played "MOBA" or some dota-like equivalant ask for advice and be aware.
Serious advice: Pressing tab not only shows creep kills but also if they are visible on the minimap. If the champion's name is greyed out that means he/she is not visible on the minimap and there is a chance they are in that bush you are about to facecheck. (walk into)

Shouldn't that be a "Don't"? There is far more valuable information on TL than on leaguecraft and my initial impression is that 90% of guides on leaguecraft / mobafire are not very good. Though this new forum kinda masks how much information there actually is.

No because people can actually rate and review guides there so u can sort out the good ones, on TL theres no way of actually knowing if the guy creating the guide knows wtf hes talking about since theres no voting/review system in place.

They're reviewed and rated by other idiots, sometimes you'll see some good guides rated lowly.

Sure there is, look at the Kass thread.

Oh wow, when was this subforum created? This is nice.
Do: Play > Tutorial > Battle Training. It's play experience against bots, riddled with useful tips throughout the entire match, should be useful to new players.
Also, regarding Senx's comment: Champion guides are useful if you're new and have no idea how to build a champion, but eventually you stop reading them altogether. A few hundred games on your shoulders, and most of the guides you read on pages like leaguecraft or the leagueoflegends.com forums will make you /facepalm, because:
a) They're outdated, and b) 80% of the builds listed weren't even all that good back when the guide was still new and fresh.
If you want a better source of info, ask here in the TL forums. There are some good players here, and if you can get a hold of one who plays your champion, you'll not only get good tips on what masteries / runes / summoner spells / item builds to use, but chances are you can get some other champion-specific tips.

DONT pursue enemies when the rest of your team backs off DONT focus your attacking on the enemy with the most defense and health DO focus on the enemy hero that is the one killing all your d00ds (eg: Kill ashe first, not shen) DO tell your lane partner when you are going back to your base
|
- Don't auto attack creeps as soon as you reach your lane. Pushing your lane is bad. It leaves you very open to ganks from the enemy jungle at level 2-3 (hello Shaco)
Except at level 1 where getting to level 2 much faster by working the creeps down and making sure you get the last hit lets you hit level 2 faster if your opponent is not. And in many instances this is enough to push your opponent back and possibly deny him exp/farming early. This is esepcially good at low levels or low elo where people are dumb and dont know what you're doing.
|
Don't stay around if there's no point in doing it. Got an inhibitor? Back off because most likely you won't have time to push a tower. Many, many times I have seen half my team die because they 'farm' creeps after killing an inhibitor. However, if you can get a tower, do it. Focus focus focus it may be worth a death or two if you guys can manage it.
Many times it's just get a tower inhib -> steal buffs back.
If someone makes a mistake and gets out of position, DO NOT follow them to their deaths. THIS HAPPENS FAR TOO OFTEN. That dude who was caught 5v1 should be punished. However it is even more foolish of you (and your teammates) to try to help them if there isn't a reasonable reason.
A typical scenario: One guy gets caught out of position -> 5v1 -> a teammate tries to help which was pointless anyway (and typically blows a game-changing ult right before dying too like amumu) -> team engages (you too possibly because you say oh what the fuck I'll do it too) -> lose towers, inhib, buffs, dragon, baron, etc. 5v1 x 2 + 5v3
What SHOULD have happened: One guy gets caught out of position -> teammates leave him to die -> possibly lose a tower, but usually that's it.
The tower is not always safe. Tower dives happens, and if three people are wailing on a tower ignoring you DO consider that they might be able to kill you after focusing tower. Better to lose a tower over losing a tower and feeding the enemy a kill. And you get less farm!
|
|
Do the new tutorial. It gives roughly 500 IP to low level summoners and you may learn a thing or two.
|
I need some tips please.
I have a huge sticking point in my game. It's that in midgame (around lvl 10) I noticed I get seriously underfarmed compared to better players. Especially if our team is behind towers.
I do OK till about lvl 10. This is the time when usually the 3 person ganks start and even some teamfight or team pushing could happen. I just have a fear that I get ganked immediately if I start to clear some waves alone or with just my lanemate or if I don't stick to my teammates.
I use wards. I don't know, maybe it's just a question of map awareness? Usually I don't hang in the jungle very much. Maybe that could partially solve the problem?
|
What champs do you normally play? Just a quick look at a minimap and see where your teammates are or are headed and go to a lane that they aren't occupying. Don't go past river unless you see or have seen the enemy on the minimap recently. Depending on your champ, summoners, if your turret is still up, and what was on the minimap recently should let you know how far you can push your lane. But if your team is 4 grouped, you should stick with the team. If they are in different lanes and jungle, that should be your queue to farm it up. Also make your farm count, don't just mindlessly auto and mash your skills.
|
I play many different champs, not very well neither of them though. I don't really have a main. I decided I will use Ezreal as much as I can this week though.
Thanks for the answer. I guess there is no simple answer for that question lol. I will try to increase my farming as safe as I can.
|
Not dying once > killing 1 once
Except if its FB, greeding isnt good
|
A small bit of advice that I haven't really seen anywhere else: When teamfighting at or around a turret, try and gauge how well your team is doing and if you can push their team off the turret a bit, it's usually worth trying to take the turret down rather than diving for players (or while killing players, ie. getting a 2nd carry to focus the turret while the rest of the team is fighting). Ultimately the game is not about kills, it's about killing the nexus so always remember what the primary objectives are.
|
Don't just play 1 or 2 champions, it'll make your team lose more than win, play the champion that your team needs - be a team player.
Don't just lock in your favorite champ at start of selection and then ASSUME people will be team players and build the team around you -- they won't.
Learn a support, AP carry, AD carry, jungler and a tank and your success rate will sky rocket

BW is Starcraft Brood War. It's the game that started teamliquid.net.
Ok, I've got something that I wanted to ask about, but am embarassed to do so. It shuold fit the newb thread though. I have trouble playing melee champions. If I'm melee and I go to try to kill a minion, I get nailed by their champs. Or if I'm at a tower I can't get up next to it because the other champs will start to nail me next to their tower. How do you play a melee champ properly? I'm never in the lane because I have to go back and heal all the time, then I'm just way behind and I suck.
Edit: I had another question... For items such as Wit's End, Sword of the Divine, Frozen Mallet, etc... where they give a passive effect to your attacks, do these effects apply to abilities? If I have a Frozen Mallet with Corki and shoot a fleeing champ with a rocket, would they slow? If I had the Frozen Mallet with Ryze and use E on a group of champs, would they all slow?
|
you should probably try asking those in the general discussion thread.
Playing Melee champs is harder, but with most of them you want to camp the brush and just pop out for last hits to avoid eating ranged harass. Most Melee have either a ranged nuke to trade hits or a charge/jump to close distance vs. ranged. They also typically do better damage/survive longer once the distance has been closed, so knowing when to just run up and fight the opponent is important but it takes some experience to be comfortable with your damage output and the opposing damage output.
On-hit effects trigger only on attacks and a precious few abilities that function similarly to attacks. The only 2 abilities that do that off the top of my head are Ezreal's Mystic Shot and Gangplank's Parley. The only way to get a slow effect on other abilities is to have a Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
|
on-hit effects: ez's mistic shot (can't crit) poppy's Q nasus' Q blitzcrank's powerfist GP's parley
probably few more

Also, an important piece of advice to good players it that facechecking bushes as a heal/clarity Ashe is almost a good idea.

As a comparative newbie (still in my first month!), this is one of the most important things I've learned:
Wards wards wards wards wards.
Buy them, almost always, if you have spare gold once your done buying. They will save your life, your teammate's lives, get you ganks, and sometimes win the game outright for you.
A recent example: warded dragon, even though we were behind (down ~5 kills and a tower). It managed to see the opposing team doing it. Managed to drop a nice bandage toss + Amumu ult combo which caught the opposing team by surprise, leading to a 4 kills for 1 loss trade which reversed the momentum of the game.
Don't be put off by the cost of the wards:
-If a ward lets you/your teammate farm freely, its paid itself multiple times over. -If a ward saves a teammate, its paid itself 4 times over -If a ward leads to a kill, its paid itself 4 times over
Not the mention the intangible advantages in positioning you get from having tons of map vision.
Also, never underestimate the potential for comebacks in this game. Remember, being down 20 kills doesn't decide the game--being the first to blow up the other guy's nexus is. People lose sight of this sometimes, focusing on the kill scoreboard over positioning.
The flip side of that is that playing sloppily could easily cost you what you might think was a won game.
|
As a somewhat new LoL player, I would like to ask why does nobody talk in Liquid Party? I thought it would be a good place to get some games and undoubtedly there would be at least a couple of people around my skill level since there are over a hundred people in the channel but nobody ever responds to me. The game's much, much better when you play with a group, even if you hardly know them
|
This isn't really an in-game question, but do most of the Brazilians that instalock carries and spam pings/"algum BR?" dissipate as you start playing ranked? I just started playing but those guys are so annoying lol (srry kinda stereotypical)
|
So I have decided to settle on Tristana until I get a grasp of the game. Which of those three builds would you recommend for a total nubby?
, maybe this or the build advocated in that guide?
With the little knowledge of the game I have, I assume the first would provide the greatest survivability, meaning it's the most forgiving. Is that correct and should I hence use it?

Noob Queston here: Why is it stupid to have two players in mid-lane and what makes the lanes different? Top and bot appear except for the jungle identical to me. e: How often are the servers down?

I just started playing lately too, and the main thing about the middle lane is that the minions come earlier. From the mid-game on the major fights seem to happen around the mid and the river. Because the minions come by faster, it is best for your strong AP carry to go into mid solo so they can level up quickly, and since the mid holds the most influence in how it is close to where all the big stuff usually happens, it's good to just have someone solo there. The reason why the top is usually taken by someone that can sustain while the bottom is taken by a duo is because for the majority of the game getting the dragon holds more significance than the baron because the baron is so goddamned hard to kill. So attempts on the dragon will occur early on and throughout the whole game. The bottom lane is closer to the dragon, so you have two people there to exert influence.
At least that's what I've picked up on. I might be really wrong. This game is deceptively difficult to play. I've never played DotA or HoN before, so I'm really new to this genre. Whenever I try to jungle I fail so hard. I can't really grasp the role. Is it a necessity that you be level 30 and have your masteries maxed out and have tier 3 runes in order to jungle properly?
|
Great thread, very helpful. I didn't know much why most people went mid as well. Is there a list out there somewhere with all the hot keys? Not ability keys like QWERDF, but keys that aren't really stated like A + Click and G to ping.

Runes make a huge difference in the jungle. My runes are really god awful for jungling (still working on them) and I have to jungle like perfectly but it is outrageously difficult so I don't even try it anymore. They may not seem like much but levels 1-4 are really dependent on those stats.
|
Yeah, it's a mess. I can kiiiiiiiiiiiinda do it with Warwick but I tried jungling with Nunu last night and it failed miserably. I couldn't even kill the blue golem even with a pull and smite + that huge nuking move. I'm just going to forget about jungling until I hit level 30. The concept of jungling really intrigues me though, and I'm looking forward to learning the role later on quite a bit.

It's a month old post, but this information does belong in the OP:
The difference between top and bottom lane comes from the fact that bottom lane is a lot closer to dragon, which is a major contention point until mid game because it gives a lot of global gold. It is just easier to pressure it with more people closer to it. Killed their mid, AD carry or jungler and are still pretty healthy? Attempt to kill dragon.
The reason why it is generally a bad idea to have two people in mid lane is because it is the safest lane in the game - the tower is much closer to the spot you are farming and that fact protects you from a lot of ganks.
