Shield is slightly worse when purely talking damage, but the 80+.9 health shield means its a much stronger spell per cast and generally safer (also lower cd can matter at times). So yeh if you have the strong lane or you can safely harras them on your own, go for W but if you have to expect them just jumping on you with say a taric stun and some Mf pain when you get in for a W then shield is much better for lvl 1. But don't jannas focus on roaming more nowadays? You seem to talk about her laning...
oh wait taric+mf, i guess you are talking about europe, though i think the previous discussion was about us janna

Its only use is to prevent death by Ignite. 8% movespeed 24% slow over 4 sec 60+.8 damage 600 range at 12 sec CD for 40 mana vs 80+.9 shield 14 AD for 5 sec at 10 sec CD for 70 mana Attackspeed at lvl 1 is generally something around 0.66, so 2 attacks in 3 seconds. If you are lucky, you get 4 attacks in while you have E. That's an extra 52 damage. But at the same time you move in to 475 autoattack range for a full 5 seconds. If the enemy doesn't retaliate, W deals more damage and you can kite/chase better. If the enemy can retaliate you are comparing harrass from 600 range over .5 seconds against harrass from 475 range over 5 seconds. I'm tempted to believe that the enemy can deal 80 damage in those 4.5 seconds, meaning that E is weaker again. If I shield an Ashe or Cait, they have to spend 5 seconds autoattacking enemies to come close to the value of W. During that time they can't farm. W wins again. Can you really provide me a compelling reason to go E over W? Q for lvl 1 teamfights, obviously.
In any of the new bot lane situations, w is useless except for using as cc because janna has a weaker bot lane than other support + carry bot lanes and if you get into 600 range to deal a w in a lane where you're on the back foot because lane enemy will heal while you will be useless unless you go for a burst kill. E lets you fight off poke dmg, and is a crappy substitute for a heal, but it's better than a crappy slow which you won't use and it gets good when you put more points into it.
You go w over e first as Janna. I am shocked at how you believe this is good.
Why Janna lvl 1 roam is bad. Janna has worse lvl 1 pressure than other lvl 1 roamers. This means if two roamers meet each other, then Janna is fucked because that slow is very useful vs a stun. Janna is better with levels than without. In a risk vs reward situation, failing your roam has a worse consequence for janna than other roamers, and Janna sucks without high level shield, and ult. Janna lvl 1 roam only has a slow other people have a stun. Stun means you prevent enemy from doing anything for a few seconds, meaning if the lane you gank has cc then you deal more dmg with a stun than a slow which you can escape from with either summoners, or just run to tower. Meanwhile, your bot 2v1 is going to get f'ed, and all you can pressure with is a slow. W has only 600 range too. By going for the shitty lvl 1 gank with Janna and w, you gimp yourself really hard by having crappy lvl for the next stage in the game.
Lvl 1 janna roam not too good vs lvl 4 roam because at lvl 4 you have decent shield and 2 CC.
New bot lane punishes 2v1 lanes more heavily, and new soloes are more durable and can shrug off or escape shitty janna roam.
hmmm, I don't even remember writing that Janna post. Medicine + migrane=wut? Won't remember this shit either.

Well if you are roaming with janna then yes W mostly makes more sense, but if shen died at lvl 1 with a janna helping him I am pretty sure that it was in a US bot lane situation rather than a EU shen solo top one. I.e. 2v2 not 2v1, ofc in 2v1 you wan't to bully them with a slow that lets you get in more hits as they have to run because no char can fight 1v2 at lvl 1.

adasdjhasda I just had the most satisfying game yet. I was saving everyone's life as Shen. Everyone had actual map awareness, I didn't have to ping the map 10 times every time 4 enemy champions walked past a ward. Constant clairvoyances in all the right places at the right times. Everyone was poking as much as they can while taking minimal damage. If that's what ranked matches are like, then I can't wait to hit 30.

It is, but you're always on the other team.

You so funny.
On a netbook more RAM isn't worth it. I'd be better off saving up for a gaming laptop.

I got an msi last summer. Enjoy it quite a bit, apart from the graphics card crashing every time I watch a video with the switchable graphics set to gaming.

Yup. You'd think it would be a statistical impossibility, but it's true.

any thoughts on gold/10 items for solo tank/tanky dps like jarvan/irelia/jax, etc? Not worth it after 10min? 3 max? Phil stone or hog?

HoG / philos on Jarvan works, irelia with 2 philos and a hog maybe but I wouldnt do it. Jax needs 4 dblades, tabi and gunblade asap, no time for gp5

Irelia with one or two philos has like stupid amounts of reg.

Zzzzzz. I play Janna to win my lane. Not to not-lose-too-horribly.
Sure if you are getting owned then E might help you not get owned as much, but it won't win you the lane either.
Also you underestimate the strength of a 600 range 24% slow at level 1. Blow summoners to escape? Success. Just run? 4 seconds of attacks from 2 people, success. Fight back? 2v1, success.
