It took the completely irrelevant Valve stepping in to give Dota the support it deserved. Why the hell did they not do anything in fucking 2004? Actually, I take that back. I'm glad we needed to wait for Valve to step in. Although even the TL channel is just annoying bots wanting to trade random shit for keys there's still a sense of connection to a community in Dota 2. I feel like the current Battle.net is a step or two away from exchanging friend codes and fighting in random anonymous 4 player FFA 2 minute Super Smash Bros Brawl games. With Valve even though Dota is nowhere near as exciting to watch as Starcraft 2 its a much better setup as a whole. Kind of sucks that every tournament is paid, but most of them are $1-$2 and they're all visible in the client and then there's things like the Compendium which were an amazing way to make a live event interactive without having to actually attend it. There's also the community-made cosmetic items which even when I'm frustrated by the terrible matchmaking keep me coming back. With Blizzard's awful release rate and lack of community interaction I don't see anything like this ever coming. And I'm far from a Valve fanboy. I only just got Steam a year or so ago because I hated it at its inception and for many years following from the leftover bad taste. I still buy all my games in boxes unless its something ancient like the Thief Series for $5 that I couldn't get running out of a box on Windows 7 if I tried. They've just done everything right. Everything in Dota takes me back to the good old days of dedicated servers. I love being able to change my name to arbitrary sqiggly shit and put up random-ass avatars every day. So really, why should anyone switch from Dota to this? Dota has everything that has created a genre and has existed for over a decade. Dota brought us Pudge! Sure there's some wonky-ass shit like denies and creep pulling, but it's all grown into a part of the metagame. What is this possibly going to offer? Battle.net will in no way be better if SC2 and D3 are any indication and there's a great deal of inertia in competing with a game that I have played for over 10 years. I'm sure Blizzard will do all it can to make the game more accessible to new players, but to be frank that is the exact shit that has watered down all their games post-WC3. Dota is great because of its depth and complexity. You have to put a ton into it but once you've made that investment the rewards are far better than anything else out there and the game becomes absolutely timeless. PS I have no idea why I even clicked this thread. I thought a Heart of the Swarm post got necroed.

1) their image (as we all know their fanbase is loyal as shit with Starcraft, Warcraft and Diablo even with such lackluster performance of late across the board) 2) play your favorite characters of yesteryear. That's the major ploy anyway. I hope they've come along way since what I've seen from their alpha testing. Regardless they might want to think about re-branding the name. Again.

It's not really hating rather than people just wondering why Blizzard feels the need to enter an already very saturated market. There are millions of people who've already invested a lot time and money in either League of Legends or DOTA2 and I don't see those people switching any time soon. It's just as futile as 99.9% of all MMORPGs that tried to compete with World of Warcraft the past decade: they were popular for a few weeks, maybe a few months but in the end people just stuck to World of Warcraft. WoW was released into a genre that already had UO, Everquest, Asheron's Call, and DAoC, and was going head-to-head with Everquest II. People made the same argument when it was announced. I made that argument. There are two popular MOBAs out there, both are getting older, and it is not a saturated market. They're definitely taking on risk, but it can do well if the game is good. While it's true that WoW had success even though it was competing with already well established games, none of them were as big as LoL is now. LoL in it's current form dwarfs any of the old MMOs, and it's still growing. On top of that you throw in Dota 2 as additional competition, and the picture doesn't look pretty. That's not to say Blizzard Allstars doesn't have a chance, but really, you can't blame people for being skeptical about it. I myself am looking forward to Blizzard Allstars. Some concepts that have been shown in previews actually look pretty cool and innovative. I just hope they don't botch this.

It absoluely can do well if it's good, but the problem is given the market right now, how good will good have to be? IMO for it to gain traction it will have to be literally the best game in the genre. That's a tall order.

You're the first person I've seen to not compliment Hearthstone and spend thousands of dollars on it. >_> Really? Myself and basically everyone I knew that had played a decent amount of magic got bored of it in a few weeks at most, I went back to magic and duel of champions within a month. God I wish draft was as easy to do as it is in HS though, that's the one thing that Blizzard did incredibly well, I even still open HS every once and a while to do Arenas despite not really liking the game anymore. With that being said, it's just the simplicity of the game that turned me off, everything else about Hearthstone is fucking amazing and I'm going to suggest it to any friends that haven't have any competitive magic experience or just want something different. It really reminds me of the old Blizzard games in a lot of ways. With that being said, the responses in this thread are kind of confusing to me. Wasn't the main complaint with Blizzard that they had strayed from their roots as a passionate game company and turned into some corporate mega-company? Because HS and Heroes seem to be Blizzard trying to stray from that and get back to their roots, and with the popularity of HS I think they've done quite well with it.

Yay, nice move (sarcazm) Nah, it is stand alone game, it was already stated. i read that it will be f2p with starter pack and on the arcade It was at Blizzcon 2011, it was already stated that now it is stand alone. Probably because downloading 14+ GiB for arcade map is retarded. In addition to that, battle.net would have to be altered a bit to properly support HotStorm. But HotStorm is still using SC2's engine and the editor received multiple additions/changes/fixes because of it. <3 Due to an older change with spectators, I assume that they might add a way for spectators being able to join games. (Before spectators could interact with the game and then out of the blue, they "fixed" that. But that means that spectators can be separated from the played game now which would be required for that feature.) After that we will see which changes they can integrate into sc2's battle.net for LotV. At least I can see the possibility for that. It would surprise me, if they make HotStorm a part of the current sc2 installation, but that would be cool. I would love to use their assets directly in sc2 and maybe having a button within sc2 to start HotStorm would be really nice, too.
