Lifecoach: "I give highend lifecoaching as my name suggests"
Lifecoach, first congrats for making it to Phase 2 of the EU Blizzcon qualifiers. Can you introduce yourself to some of the viewers who don't know you so well?
Thanks, I am Lifecoach and I am travelling through the world at the moment playing Hearthstone in all the different places, since I was lucky enough to retire and now do stuff I enjoy and like.
What did you do before you retired?
I made many different things, but I made chunks of my money by playing poker, investing in Real estates and on the stock market. How's the retired life now and do you have any other hobbies now besides Hearthstone?
The retired life is nice and I can do and pursue where i am passionate, so that´s great. I give Highend Lifecoaching as my name suggests. In the last 8 months I focused on travelling and Hearthstone, but I plan to focus entirely on Hearthstone once I will be in Vienna, which will be in roughly 1.5 months.Oh, where can i learn about your lifecoaching services?
Nowhere, it's word of mouth. People come to me through recommendations, also the rates begin @ $2,000/day which means it´s rather not for the general customer, means it's $4,000/day, but I make exceptions.Well, can you offer a sample piece of lifecoaching advice both for me and any readers?
Every person is different. That's why I only offer individual coaching. I know there are the lifecoaching seminars where somebody teaches 20+ people, but I don´t believe that they are any useful, probably rather a money printing machine^^Last time you had planned to go to Dreamhack, you had to cancel because of a new addition to your family. How's the new baby, is she keeping you busy all day/night?
The new baby is really adorable and fine, and yes, she is keeping us quite busy, especially because we have two now, so taking care of them is like more than a full time job.Are you excited for your first Hearthstone LAN and is there anyone in particular you want to meet at the EU championships?
I have been playing poker in real life already. At the EPT series you also have a lot of spectators, but I guess it will be a little bit different on a gaming convention, so definitely looking forward for it.You're most known for popularizing Hunter a few months back. When you started to play Hearthstone, why did you choose to focus on Hunter, a class that was heavily underplayed at that time?
I am not a mainstream player, which means I love to discover and to find out things others don't. So as I took a look at the cards I felt that the Hunter cards are in general quite overpowered, but nobody succeeded in playing them or building a deck with them. I couldn't believe that it shouldn't be possible to convert these insane cards into a deck which can win, so I tested beginning with ancient watchers and then changed one card here and one card there since I played it an awful lot I got a feeling for which cards could be better and which not. When everybody played the deck I began to focus on a new class, even 1 month before the hound nerf. What new class is that?
It was warrior at that time, I think i tried to build it in an unconventional way, can't remember exactly though. As the Hunter master, what do you think about the upcoming Hunter nerfs involving Buzzard and Leeroy?
Hunter doesn´t like them
Haha ok. We haven't seen your stream much lately. Going into the Blizzcon Qualifiers, how did you prepare and how much?
Well, since I just know it since 4 days ago that I will participate I tried and will try to prepare myself as much as possible, whereas the nerfs really give me a hard time. Usually I need two weeks to test one deck, and then i can decide whether I like it or not. The nerf cost me both of my main decks, which has been Miracle and Hunter. As I said I usually need 2-4 weeks for one deck, which makes 2-3 month for four decks, and I have to decide that now within 1 week, for a yet unknown meta. Everybody has to do that, but it was kind off random and unlucky that both of my decks got effected.
That's unfortunate. What about for Phase 1, the 128-man qualifier. How did you decide on your final 3 decks: Hunter, Druid, and Miracle?
Hunter and Miracle are the decks I am specialized in, so the only question has been the third deck. That was kind of random, but I thought Druid would be the most consistent class.Everyone seemed to have different Hunter decks in the qualifiers. How did you decide on an All-Beast No-Trap deck with no Undertakers?
The Buzzard get's his whole strength from beast synergetic effects. If you play Buzzard and Unleash the Hounds, it's way stronger also to play a Timber Wolf or Hyena additionally. Also I mulligan hard for Buzzard, which means I always have one in the late game, and if u play beast heavy, you can cycle even if you don't have unleash, which would not be possible otherwise. In summary, I simply think it's way stronger than the other one. What about your Druid deck, which has a few cards we don't normally see from Druid, namely, Unstable Ghoul, Earthen Ring Farseer, and Kel'Thuzad?
It's a taunt Druid therefore Kel'Thuzad is quite strong. The Unstable Ghoul is very strong for the Hunter meta, where he stabilizes at the beginning or prevents hounds later. Also the environment should punish Warrior hence they don't hurt you that much. They hurt you if your opponent plays an acolyte. I also find Earthen Ring quite strong in combo with taunt. In the tournament, who did you find was your hardest opponent and did you have any particularly interesting games?
I don't believe too much in hard opponents since you simply give your best, so you should rather focus on maintaining your game. I think a lot of games were quite interesting but I don't have anything specific in mind. Before I forget, previously you were on team GG. What happened on that team and are you currently on a team or looking for a team?
I am not on a team atm, and was also not a full member of team GG. They asked me whether I would like to be in the team and I told them that i would help out in the first competitions and then make up my mind. In the end it turned out that there basically weren't first competitions
Ah that unfortunate. Still not actively really looking for a team at this point, right?
If there will be something nice for sure, but only with the right players, and there are not many of them. By right I mean skillful, so that you can have nice strategic discussion and talks. At the moment we have this Twitch community which persists out of a lot of high level players, and I guess that´s way better than being in a team because there we can have like fruitful talks with dozens of top tier players. And finally, can you rank for me the 5 best players at the LAN finals besides yourself?
Kolento, thefishout, Mryagut. The others I don't know enough to make a picture. Alright, thanks a lot for the interview! Do you have any final shout outs or plugs?
No that's fine, thanks for the interviewDecklists

Matthew: "I always started with Miracle, this deck can beat anything"
First, can you introduce yourself to all the fans that may not know you?
My name is Àlex Mateu, I'm 22 years old (I will be 23 this Sunday). I live in Barcelona, Spain, and I have no team at the moment. I'm really new in the Hearthstone competitive scene, actually this was my first and only tournament I played in Hearthstone (and in PC games in general). I played Magic: The Gathering for more than 10 years though.
Wow, no team. Qualifying for the EU finals is especially impressive now. Do you have any practice partners at least?
Well, more or less, I play with my friends sometimes but that's not really usual, for that tournament we tested like 2-3 afternoons and besides that, my testing consisted in watching streamers a lot, try a lot of strange stuff to see how it works, and ranked gamesHave you heard about the player, Lucky? He's also a Spanish player who qualified for VGVN #1 and did well in a few other tournaments. Maybe you guys can talk!
Nope, I did not hear about him. I don't really know a lot of the competitive players in general, just the famous ones, the streamers...It's pretty amazing that this is your first tournament and you did so well. How much did you prepare for this particular tournament and what kind of preparation went into it?
I played a lot the last month, watched good streamers play (I think this is really really important), and that's it, just ranked, and eventually games with my friends. It's obviously better to have a team of good players with you, sadly I didn't have that I could only test with 3-4 friends the lasts days of the event, even tho I think that playing ranked games as I did the lasts days (taking screenshots and notes of tricky situations, thinking the play like I was in the tournament) is also a good way to be thereWas there a particular reason you never played in previous tournaments? And now that you've succeeded in your first tournament, do you think you would want to consider playing in future open tournaments?
Maybe I was just too lazy, or maybe I thought it was complicated to know what to do, with who should I talk to, etc as I never played a tournament for a PC game. After playing this one I've seen that it's actually really easy, you mods did a really good job, every question I had was instantly answered and I had a really good time, so yeah, I will most likely start playing some tournaments when I come back from Sweden.Let's talk a bit more about you. Besides Hearthstone, do you have any other hobbies?
As I said I played Magic a lot in the past, I like to play Heroes of Newerth, and I love cooking and partying with my friends. Are you upset at all that HoN didn't take off as much was LoL or Dota? They seemed to be neck and neck at one point.
Yes, I would like that people played HoN instead of other mobas, I think is the best one, and there was a time when everybody played HoN, but then LoL came as a free to play when HoN wasn't and since then we lost more and more players. Also, I love cooking too! What kinds of things do you cook and how professional are you about it?
My favourite food is the Asiatic one, Sushi is one of my favs meals, and I also like to go to good restaurants now and then... What I like of cooking is being creative, and the decoration, I like to make strange and good meals to impress my friends. Sometimes I follow the recipe of a good chef, and sometimes i just go to the supermarket and I try to innovate and see what happens. After finishing my studies I will for sure do some cooking courses. And I thought seriously about opening a restaurant, but I guess that's too much of a sacrifice as I heard..
I've actually thought about that too, but it seems hard. Do you ever do Spanish cuisine or is that too commonplace in Spain? To be honest, all i know is Paella, Gaspacho, Empanadas, and Sangria.
Yeah! I do all of those things (all but sangria, I'm really bad at making it, I prefer to just buy it).Me too, my sangria just turns out to be like apple wine.
(Laughs)Let's talk a bit about Hearthstone now! Going into the tournament, how did you select your three decks?
I was thinking about bringing 3 really strong decks, decks that could beat anyone in case something went wrong and I was behind, 3 decks that could make me come back from a bad position. I always started with Miracle, this deck can beat anything and it's pretty solid in my opinion. I also had Hunter without secrets, after playing some mirror matches I noticed that if I draw a trap and my opponent flares it I'm just so behind, I didn't want that to happen but I wanted to do that to my opponent. And I also had Handlock, a version oriented to beat control decks, there's no Leeroy, only 2 AOE, it has Jaraxxus. The role of Handlock was pretty clear, I thought of a lot of combinations of classes and this was the one with more options, and I wasn't wrong at all, since Reynad and Tides that made 5-0 had exactly those classes.
I also noticed an Abusive Sergeant in your Handlock. I don't believe we've ever seen that card in Handlock. Could you explain it to me?
A lot of people asked me about that, first I have to say that the creator of this is ErA, and as I said before I like to test strange cards and see what happens... Well, this card is in the slot of power overwhelming, since I'm not running the Leeroy combo it doesn't really matter the +2 or the +4. The difference is that when u are not comboing or killing your opponent, power overwhelming kills your creature, and that might be bad, Sergeant is a pro-active card, you use your Drake/Watcher to kill his Belcher/insert any 5-6 resistance creature, and your creature remains in play and you also have a 2/1. So in the scenario of trading is more efficient, in the scenario of using it with Shadowflame it doesn't really matter do 6 damage to everything or 8 damage when you use it on your 4 attack creature. And it can also be used to kill a 5-6 attack creature like Loatheb or Savannah Highmane between others with your Big Game Hunter.
When you play Handlock you use your hero power a lot, so most of the time you will not lose for having a hand of 5 cards and a sergeant than a hand of 6 cards, but sergeant can give you something than no one else could do, like as I said, killing things with bgh or trading efficiently. We had some jokes that my Handlock was abusive...xd
I can remember a game when my drake killed his druid 4/6 taunt and that 2/1 actually set up for lethal next turn.
That's a very good answer. What about your Miracle Rogue that ran 2 Sinister Strike and only 1 Fan of Knives?
I like sinister strike because it makes the deck faster and its a good card on the mirror match, its like a Cold Blood but you can use it for your turn 4 Edwin/SI:7, and it always has a target (you can use Cold Blood on your own auctioneer but if its the only creature in play and the opponent kills it next turn, which will most likely happen u get 0 value from your Cold Blood, just 1 mana draw a card, sinister at least does 3 damage, and sometimes with spell power is the same than a Cold Blood, and rarely even better. The only one FoK is because this card is not good against Warrior, not really useful on mirror, not very good against Hhandlock, not very good against Priest. It's a bit situational, is there because is good when you have auctioneer preparation to help clearing board, and in some situations when you for example kill 1-2 spiders and want to get ride of the tokens. And also because it draws you a card, and some matches are based on if you draw the auctioneer or not.
Finally, your Hunter deck has a lot of interesting features as well with 2 Flare and 2 Tracking as well as only 1 Haunted Creeper and 2 Timber Wolf. That seems to be far from standard in Hunter.
Flare is an op card in my opinion, as Reynad said, if that card was neutral I would probably be playing it on every single deck, because it makes your deck smaller, it always replaces itself, and you can actually get a lot of value if you get a secret. The two Trackings I find that are really really good, there are some situations that only an specific card like Buzzard, Unleash the Hounds, Leeroy, Kill Command... can get you out of a bad situation, and a lot of people have cut the Trackings for other cards, forgetting that sometimes playing hunter is just playing 2 Buzzards 2 Hounds and 26 other cards. The 1 Haunted Creeper and 2 Timber Wolf was because if for some reason I face Zoo (which I did) it might be hard to beat them with no explosives and only one Timber Wolf, as you wont clean anything with just 1/1 doggies, and it actually worked really well, its a cheap card for Buzzard, and I remember wining a game thanks to the typical combo of 2 wolves, Leeroy, Hounds. A friend didn't agree at all with all of that and decided to play the 2nd Haunted Creeper because its better for the starting hands, for Undertaker... etc. Well I did not regret to play it like this.
During your run, who would you say was your most difficult opponent and how did that match go?
All my opponents were really good players, the most intense match was the last one, I was 5-1 and if I won that I would be going to Sweden, so I had to do my best. He started with Warrior beating my Miracle, and, surprisingly, my Handlock too. He beat my Handlock because my Hearthstone didn't respond, and I ran out of time because of that in one turn doing a really bad play, anyway I don't know if I would have won that one anyway. So I was 0-2 and I only had Hunter left and I was against Warrior. Somehow my Hunter could beat his Warrior, his own Hunter and his Handlock, and that gave me the spot to go to Sweden! As an anecdote I can tell that I started 0-1 losing 3-0 against zoo, he had in the 3 games the same, turn 7 no hand, soulfire into doomguard, or doomguard into soulfire. I felt violated.
Well, zoo can do that to you. I believe in Seatstory Cup, Gnimsh went Doomguard into Doomguard into Soulfire once against Trump.
Yeah sometimes that happens. Three times the same round is pretty epic though xd.Now that you've qualified for the finals at Dreamhack, how will you be practicing? Also, can you rank the 5 players you fear the most going into the EU finals?
It's a little bit crazy because you can't practice new meta on ranked because the nerfs are effective this Monday and I will be at Sweden this Tuesday. So I try to play with decks of the "new meta" on ranked and I'm gonna try to play with some friends the new meta, besides that I'm trying to investigate, read as much articles as possible, keep watching the streamers (Forsen is doing it really well with a miracle with no Leeroy) and dunno, that's it... I would probably add some other Spanish players and see if I can get as much people to test as possible! In the EU finals I actually fear everybody xD, my favorites are Kolento and Reynad.
Alright, that's all the questions I have for you. Do you have any final shoutouts or plugs?
Just say thanks to everyone that's supporting me, a lot of people have been asking about how was it going and I felt really accompanied. Decklists

Frezzar: "When I'm not off slaying nerds or bashing noobs"...
Can you introduce yourself a bit to the readers, age, team, country of origin, etc...
My name is Bertil Fall, I'm from Sweden. I live in a pretty small town called Åkersberga close to Stockholm. I play Hearthstone for Fnatic.
We haven't heard much from you since you blasted through the DreamHack Summer brackets a few months ago. What's been going on with Frezzar since then?
I've been playing alot of ladder season 4 and 5. Been playing some community tournaments as well like Zotac and stuff. Mostly been preparing for this tournament and getting settled with Fnatic and my new teammates. Can you introduce your new teammates and talk a little bit about each of them?
First off is Twixsen who is a real ladder warrior on both NA and EU. But he is mostly known from hes success in community tournaments. And then there's Kaldi who is a man of numbers. He really likes to figure out the current meta and all the matchups. He has also done pretty good in tournaments like DreamHack Summer where he got top 16.What would you say are Twixsen and Kaldi's biggest strengths and weaknesses?
Well i would say Twixsen's biggest strength is mechanics, he's really good at making unexpected plays and playing unexpected decks. Kaldi's biggest strength is perfection, he never makes mistakes and hes really good with matchups and deck building.Twixsen's biggest weakness is probably emotions, sometimes when hes down 0-1 he might lose some motivation and is not really in the game. Kaldi's biggest weakness is inexperience with Paladin and Priest.
What would you say is in the future for Fnatic? You were the first player and then a few weeks later, both Twixsen and Kaldi joined. How does Fnatic decide who to pick up and what would you say is the focus of the team going forward?
The future for Fnatic is pretty bright I would say, we practice everyday and people are definitely going to see tournament results from us in the future. When Fnatic started looking at players they were looking for players who could prove themselves over and over. The focus of the team going forward is mostly just practice and motivation I would say. We've talked a lot about your Hearthstone setting, but besides Hearthstone, what does Frezzar do in his free time?
When I'm not off slaying nerds or bashing noobs. I'm usually at Ikea, hanging out, chilling or just generally having a good time. Is Ikea like actually a hang out place in Sweden? I certainly wouldn't mind hanging out there.
Yeah kind of.Do you have any favorite movies or TV shows that you enjoy, perhaps while you're at Ikea?
I like most series and TV shows, my favorite movie is "Rocky" because we have so much in common. Why do you think you and Rocky have so much in common? Is it because you get beat up so much?
Because I never give up.But doesn't Rocky lose more than he wins?
I don't think so.Actually, I was just making that up. I just looked up the "Rocky" series and realized there's actually six movies, wow.
Haha, yeah they are quite many, but the last 2 he's a coach.Do you have a favorite out of the six?
I think the 2nd one or the 3rd one is my favorite. The third one is the one where he loses, right?
Yeah then my favorite is the 2nd one, where he beats Apollo.Would you have preferred that Rocky won in the 3rd movie or do you think the fact that he lost was a more appropriate ending?
I would have preferred that he won, but you can't win every time. You got past an extremely tough DreamHack Summer Open bracket a few months ago but unfortunately lost in the bracket. Did you learn any important lessons from that loss like Rocky did?
I learned how to play on stage and on offline events. Because that was the first time I experienced that. So I was pretty nervous then.Alright let's talk a bit about Hearthstone then! How did you end up deciding on your three decks and classes, Hunter, Miracle, and Zoo?
Miracle can pretty much beat anything and I'm really comfortable with the deck. Hunter is really strong at the moment. And Zoo has the best overall matchup against every deck.I have to ask about about your Miracle. What's the reasoning behind the Zombie Chow and Wild Pyromancer?
I was expecting a lot of early game decks like Zoo and Hunter so the Zombie Chow helps a lot with that. And the Wild Pyromancer is for the same reasoning especially now with all the Death Rattles after Naxx.Did the two cards work out for you in the tournament? If you could have a do-over, knowing what you know about your opponents' decklists in the tournaments, would you still include those two cards?
For sure the Zombie Chows. The pyromancer did not perform as well as i expected it to, but its still a really good card to play right now.Now you say that Zoo has a good matchup across the field, but two of the most successful decks in the tournament were Miracle and Handlock, two decks that traditionally people say to have an advantage over Zoo. What's your opinion on this thought process?
I think that Zoo has a pretty good shot at beating Handlock. When I was testing it with my team mates the Zoo actually won most of the time. And same thing with the Miracle, at least with the decklist of Miracle that most people are running with no Zombie Chow and Wild Pyromancer. And I think Zoo was not as successful as the Handlock and Miracle because not enough people played it. Maybe I'm wrong though on the last part.During your Phase 1 matches, you went through some tough rounds. Of those, which would you say was your most difficult?
CupCake was my hardest opponent, we had some really crazy and Intense games. After that, Lifecoach.Going into DreamHack once again, who will you be looking to face and who do you think is your top competition? Rank those players if you can.
Well everyone who qualified is obviously really good. But I think I'm mostly scared of Neirea and Reynad. Most people would answer players like Kolento and Lifecoach as well. Is there a reason you don't include them on your list?
They are of course really good. But when I looked at Lifecoach's line up of decks I was a bit confused and I have watched Kolento play a good amount of times and I think I could beat him.alright, thanks for the interview. Before we go, do you have any shoutouts or sponsorplugs? Anything to close off the interview?
Thanks for interviewing me. And of course shoutout to my team mates for helping me prepare for this event. Decklists

Phase One: 5-0
3-2 NotForBan
3-2 DKMR-Powder
3-0 Cupcake
3-1 Gameking
3-2 Forsen
Congrats for qualifying for the Blizzcon European LAN finals. Can you first introduce yourself?
My name is Thomas Guedj, aka thefishou. I am French, and more precisely in Ardèche (South East), land of gorgeous rocky landscapes, neolithic caves, and bad internet connections. I'm lucky to be a member of the GamersOrigin Team, one of the leading structure in France for Hearthstone and Blizzard related games. I am currently 25 years old. I work in the field of horse riding equipment. Voila, you know (almost) everything about me .
Voila is such a french thing to say ^^
^^ yeDo you have any other French-isms that you say in everyday conversation?
I mostly add french words when I try to pickup girls when abroad like ' beauté ' or ' mademoiselle'
That sounds like a very effective strategy. Man, I wish I were French now. I hear it's also effective if you're British here in the States.
Let's talk a bit about GamersOrigin. I know of the tournaments they'll be hosting and have hosted, but I wasn't aware GamersOrigin was a team. Can you tell me a bit about their team and how you came to join it?
GamersOrigin is a fansite that was launched in 2011, dedicated to Blizzard-made games, intially Diablo, and more recently Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm. They decided to launch a Hearthstone esport team back in the beta days, to promote their site and increase the HS section's visibility. Now it is one of the leading French teams, and is still looking for new talents. I was recruited during the last season of beta test, after finishing in the top 50 that season. I'm really happy I did, the roster is really good and everyone is very friendly. It is really handy for playtesting and analyzing the game. The team is currently composed of Un33d, pAc, Nitroks, Harkhonen and Typhus. What do you think about the French scene at the moment? From an outsider's perspective it seems very active yet very insular. For example, France has tournaments all the time but we don't hear about them very often.
Regarding french players, they tend to only stream in their own native language, which makes it hard for the international audience to get to know them, and thus they aren't invited anywhere. Also until now, most tournaments made in the French-speaking community had fairly low if any cash price, with no invitations for players known in the international scene. And sadly, viewers are not interested to watch a tournament stream where they don't know anybody. But things are starting to change as Hearthstone gets bigger. The second edition of the GamersOrigin Cup, that will be held in October, will have a fairly sizable cash prize of 6000€ and 500 slots for players, making it the biggest HS tournament ever in term of attendance. Several international pro players will attend the event, and it will be cast in English by well-known Amaz and Gnimsh. So I hope this time a French tournament will be able to attract a lot of attention on our scene and our players, some of which are quite talented.
I heard from Savjz that you also played in the first GamersOrigin Cup. How did you do there and what was that experience like for you?
I'm glad to hear he remembers about me. He was really impressive at this tournament. I managed to beat him in the earlier rounds, but despite that he kept his Nordic cool and went undefeated. I think he's one of world's top class players along with Kolento and I was honored to play against him. Unfortunately, things didn't get so well for me after this match, and I didn't manage to get to the final stage. At that time, despite having a solid experience with MTG tournaments, I wasn't really that much into the HS ones, I might have lacked a bit of experience back then. But since then I've worked into it and gained confidence and experience. I'm really looking toward the future events with a growing impatience.
I have a funny story about you that Savjz told me. He said in France he thought he was on the stream for first game and they said thefish first, and he replied "I already ate." Have you heard of this story before and do you find that a lot of people get confused about your name ever?
No, I didn't heard about that story, it's quite funny actually. I heard that Finnish cuisine is a lot about fish, maybe that's why he got confused. My name doesn't seems to confuse anyone here in France. People are used to see very weird "akas" on the internet with dubious use of English anyway. My name was actually a part of a mindgame I had back when I played poked. "Fish" is a poker slang term for someone that's really bad and giving away a lot of money. I expected people to underestimate my abilities based on that name. I'm not sure it worked that well, actual poker fishes don't even know what that means anyway. But the name stayed. That's an interesting story about your name. Do you also know that Savjz considers you the best French player? Would you agree and can you give me a mini-ranking of the French players in the Hearthstone scene?
I see that Savjz is not only a gorgeous man, he is also very good at evaluating one's abilities. Jokes aside, I don't know if we can tell if anyone is the best at the moment. I've had some good tournament results recently, but there's always a part of luck and I know for sure there is a lot of talented French-speaking players. But it is a fact that I'm training and strive to improve my skills and knowledge of the game so I can reach the top.As for the French-speaking community ranking, it is really hard to tell. I think my teammates are among the best, or have the potential to get there. Apart from them, a few names comes to my mind: Noisyboy, Protozoaire, Milithium... It is a non-exhaustive list though.
In fact, we had a lot of French player qualify to the EU finals: Noisyboy, Lowelo, and yourself. Protozoaire was also one game away from qualifying, so overall a really good performance from the French players.
We were talking before and you mentioned you were really into cinema. What kinds of movies do you enjoy, French, international, or all kinds?
Actually, I have a wide range of tastes. But as a proud geek, I must say I especially enjoy fantasy movies, like Peter's Jackson Lord of the Ring trilogy. The latest Batman Trilogy by Christopher Nolan is also a masterpiece of the genre. But I also enjoy less known French movies you probably never heard of. If I had to pick a movie among all, even if that's a bit heartbreaking, I would say 2001 "I am Sam" with Sean Penn might be my first pick. People say I could be the french Tarantino official lookalike, so maybe that's why I'm so interested in cinema. ^^
Yes, I remember "I am Sam" very well. I believe it was one of Dakota Fanning's first movies and I'm not surprised you liked it. I especially thought Sean Penn was really good in it. Thee only French movie I've seen was "Love Me If You Dare." Is that a popular one in France?
You're refering to "Jeux d'enfants" with Marion Cotillard. I saw it, and it is well known, but I can't say it is really a cult movie here. I guess it was well marketed for the international audience. I'm surprised though you didn't heard of other recent French movies that managed to go across our borders like "Amelie," "The Artist," "The 5th Element," "Leon" or "the Intouchables." If you haven't see "Leon" I really recommend it. If you're also into older stuff, there is a lot of classic masterpieces by Renoir, Carmé, Cocteau, Truffaut and so on...Editors note: "Leon" is known as "The Professional" (English title)
Alright, if I ever decide to go on a French movie binge, i'll be sure to look up this interview again. We also really have to talk about your job. Horse Riding Equipment? That's probably the most interesting job I've ever heard a Hearthstone player have.
Indeed, it is an exciting occupation. To summarize, I buy horse riding equipment that I sell to amateur and professional riders, especially during conventions and competitions. My parents were professional riders, so one can say I'm kinda born into that environment. For sure it is not the most known and understood job in the world, especially with gamers, but it allows me to travel a lot and to meet interesting people everywhere I go.Where has this job allowed you to travel in particular?
Essentially in Italy, and soon in Belgium and Germany. But also in some of the most beautiful places in France, like Lamotte Beuvron, south of Paris, where was recently held the French national horse riding championship, with more than 12,000 riders, a number Hearthstone still has to match
That does sound very nice and hopefully your Hearthstone journey will let you travel to even more expansive places. Speaking of Hearthstone, let's start talking about the game now. You went through with a very impressive 5-0 run. How did you prepare for the tournament and how did you decide to end up with these 3 particular decks?
Recently, I had the chance to participate to three major tournaments with excellent players : the Millstone Party 7 in Paris, The Brussels Cup 4 in Belgium (as you probably guessed), and the online last call qualification for the Prismata Cup 2. I was lucky enough to win those three tournaments which of course gave me a lof of confidence for the EU qualifier, and made me think I had had a valid selection of decks, that stayed more or less untouched for Phase 2 EU Blizzcon Qualifiers as they performed well. To name them, those decks are zoo, midrange hunter and miracle rogue. It was for me the best combination to deal with the whole metagame and answer every situation. They are also decks with a lot of raw power which means they can win several games in row if needed, since you can loose an entire deck because of bad draws.
Zoo is perhaps your most interesting deck since most players preferred Handlock as their Warlock deck of choice. Most players also agree that Zoo is unfavored vs Miracle and iffy vs Hunter. Can you explain what the benefits of Zoo are in today's metagame?
I think that Zoo actually has a favorable matchup against Hunter lists that don't run explosive traps, and even then, without a good unleash, Hunter often can't really stand the over-aggressive start of Zoo. Against Miracle, I think it depends on who gets the coin, but that might become indeed a complicated matchup. But all things considered, it is a deck that is really reliable, very aggressive, and can sometimes perform so well in early game that it becomes almost impossible to stop if the opponent doesn't immediately answer the threats. Generally, Zoo has a good matchup against the majority of current meta decklists.Your Hunter was also very different in that it ran 2 explosive traps, 2 tracking, and 0 flares. Can you explain the reasoning behind those decisions?
Initially it was a list that was made to perform well against Zoo, as I was especially afraid of this deck. The lack of flares is explained by the fact that I had in mind using Miracle to counter Hunter, and outside of this matchup (and maybe also against Mage), tracking does the same thing way better : filtering your deck so you can have smoother early game and access to threats or answers later in the game. Regarding explosive trap, it is of course an excellent solution against aggressive decks, and even against more control-ish lists, it is never a dead card as two damage and a potential charge on your bow is never negligible in a deck which has already so much damage output with cards like Leeroy or Kill Command. In the qualifier, you hit quite a few known names, including Powder, Cupcake, and Forsen. Out of your five opponents, which one was the most difficult and how did that match go?
The hardest one was certainly Forsen. It is a player that I'm particularly fond of. I've heard he had some issues during the day two of the tournament, and I deeply sympathize with him : I think he really deserved to get to top 14. Anyway, against him I played Zoo in the first game, and he was playing the miracle he is known for. I must say I was quite impressed. He had the coin but unfortunately for him he didn't get his auctioneer early enough to answer my mid game threats. From there it was pretty much over. Then he played a very aggressive Hunter, and managed to easily take the game thanks to a turn 5 unleash. Then I took Miracle to counter him and that's basically what happened, with a turn 3 farseer followed by turn 4 coin + auctioneer, I could easily deal with his minion while drawing a lot of cards. He was left with Priest, and I knew that my Miracle was really favored in this matchup, but it was my turn to get my auctionneer way too late, and I wasn't left with a sizable enough life bank to manage the situation.
I was afraid for the last game, as I know that my Hunter, with those explosive traps, wasn't at all favored against Priest. But thanks to a very good early game, I was able to lower his hp quite fast. Then he managed to handle my minions, and get back on his feet. At some point he had 8 cards in hand, and I was left with only 2. I still got to a point where is life was low enough that I could finish him with my bow, a Leeroy and double kill command.
I can see why he seemed devastated on Twitter and his stream. He was one game off from qualifying and the last game you described just seemed so close. Going into the LAN finals, I'm sure you'll face many more difficult opponents. Can you rank for me your top 5 most difficult opponents at the EU finals?
There is of course some major names like Reynad, Theude, Lifecoach, Thijs, and of course the genius Kolento, but I think everyone that managed to get to this stage has to be considered as a potential threat. I'm pretty sure we'll have some surprises and maybe new pros will arise from this tournament, as biggest tournaments until now were essentially invitationals, with the same pool of players.Speaking of invitationals, what are your opinions about the state of invitationals vs open tournaments right now?
I think the community needs both. Invitationals are good for the show and being able to follow the players you know and love. But I don't think that open tournaments get enough attention currently, I'm pretty sure there is yet some relatively unknown players that have the skill to perform at top level, and I say this with having a few French-speaking players in mind. I'm pretty sure the audience would like to know some new faces. Thanks for having the interview, any final shout outs or plugs?
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to speak
I really hope I'm going to perform well in Stockholm so that I can see how frenetic he can get ^^. I also wish the GamersOrigin Cup #2 to be a huge success, I know that more information about it will be released soon. And my very last word : Taz'Dingo. Don't ask my why, I just like how it sounds
