I've been considering this for a while now. Which type of mouses do you guys prefer? I myself use a Gigaware 26-337, which is just about the lightest mouse on the market. I've always felt that light mice were better, but i can also see the argument that heavier mice would provide more smooth control. So which one do you guys prefer?

Poll: Which weight of mice do you prefer?
(Vote): Heavy
(Vote): Light
(Vote): I use a trackpad

If you vote please post your opinion.

Light vs heavy mice? (right now it says light vs heavy mouses)

I prefer light mice, because they don't tire my wrist and elbow as much.

Get a heavy, so you can get buff while you geek out.

Actually when referring to the computer peripheral mouses is not wrong... not really right either. Both mouses and mice are proper plurals of the computer mouse =) Mouses just sounds wrong, though. =b

As for weight... I'm not entirely sure. I suppose I like lighter mice. Frankly, I don't like to say I like heavy mice, clothpads, and tilt-wheel.

I find systems that work. Right now my weapon of choice is the Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical. Simple, cheap, comfy and solid. Owning 5-7 brand-name mousepads and more than my share "gaming" mice, many spur-of-the-moment-looks-cool-to-add-to-collection mice, it's funny that I settle on the WMO, a Qck+, and, of course, my Mouse Bungee (<-- best purchase out of any computer peripheral).

I don't think weight matters all that much because the weight of your hand and lower arm makes it irrelevant. Mouse size/shape and friction are a lot more important.

I've got a Razer Diamondback 3G and a Logitech Mini Optical. They're about the same weight but the mini optical is considerably smaller.
I've been using both quite a while now and I like the Diamondback more for shooters and the like because it fits into my hand pretty neatly and I can use my wrist to aim without having to grip the mouse too tightly.
On the other hand the mini optical feels a lot better for rts games where I have to switch directions a lot and often have to do very small movements very quickly because it's way easier to move the mouse just with my fingertips.
You can reach the rainbow. I'll be there to help.

I got a Logitech G5 that has adjustable weights. I never use them though . I just keep it at the lowest weight. I just feel more comfortable that way

Yeah with how much you have to move the mouse, I don't think having a heavy mouse is good for sc. I think the whole resistance training's just ridiculous. After you've adjusted to the heavy mouse, you might have more stamina, but you won't have control over the mouse for a while as you adjust to the lighter weight. I think it'd be more beneficial to just play more with a lighter mouse, you gain better control and more stamina at the same time. As long as the mouse isn't so light that you're throwing it around your mousepad, whatever your comfort level is the best level.

I use a microsoft optical mouse that was bought back in.. 2002 or something, pretty surprised that it's still working. Stop putting so much emphasis on gears and just play the game.

A Lighter mouse is better imo.

Mainly because in some games, I have to actually lift the mouse up when I move the mouse too much, in order to put it back into the center of my mouse pad.

What could possibly be an advantage of a heavy mouse? I can only think of cons but no pros.

Does anyone have recommendations on razer mice? I'm tempted to get the DeathAdder right now, but how are the other ones? Copperhead? Diamondback? I've never used a razer before.

Since SC games can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours, Light mouse is better on the carpal tunnel. Especially for pro gamers who play 12+ hours every day.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

I use the G5, with most of the weights in, so it's relatively heavy.

I have the sensitivity turned up pretty high though, so the mouse doesn't ever move too far from the center of the pad.

I've had the DeathAdder for about a year and a half now, and I love it to death (no pun intended). I had a Logitech MX550 (I think that was the name...) previously which I loved for browsing because of all the extra buttons, but the DeathAdder felt like it was more like it was meant for gaming. It's relatively light IMO and it has teflon pads on the bottom that make it slide over your mousepad crazily smooth (I love that about it). It can also operate over a huge range of sensitivities which you can switch by pressing a button underneath it. My only major qualm about it is that it gets dirty extremely easily on the non-rubber sides, but I got over that easily.

I would definitely recommend it, though I haven't tried the other Razer models extensively so I can't comment on those .

Mouses is perfectly correct if you are referring to computer mouses -_-. In fact, I prefer people say mouses over mice. Sounds a lot more intuitive anyway.

The lighter the better for RTS games!
For FPS I'd use something heavier.

Trackball!

But seriously, I use a Razor Diamondback and I think the weight is PERFECT. The only thing I dont like about my specific mouse is its a little TOO easy to click down the buttons, often causing some undesired results. So I'd say I prefer a lighter mouse but not my mouse specifically.

I was looking at some Logitech mice and might try thouse out. I have the Logitech G15 and I can tell you... I totally should have listened to everyone who said dont get one. This thing is absolutely awful compared to just a straight up cheap keyboard when it comes to gaming. Not that that has anything to do with OP...

TL:DR: Light mouse.

light mouse because that is what I have been using for several years. I even took the weight out of my mini optical to make it lighter.

I'm definitely a light mouse person. The mouse I use weighs only 2oz.

Btw if anyone is looking for a cheaper alternative to the Logitech Mini Optical then try this one out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140306962256

Been using for several years now and I love it. The only problem I had with it was my last ones scroll wheel broke and I had to replace it (one of my friends had the same mouse and the same problem so I think its common after a lot of use).

i have a DeathAdder and it is the best mouse i have ever used... bought it summer of 2008 and its still holding up great...

for starcraft i would say it's a bit unnecessary but for Counter-strike and quake, its the best mouse ive used. its light enough that even in long gaming sessions your wrists wont get tired. also, the added confidence boost of "i'm using a razer mouse with a shitload of DPI" doesnt hurt frag counts either...

dont let friends who arent gamers use it though... my buddies hate the mouse with a passion and think it's too sensitive. also, the LED is kind of annoying at night when i'm trying to sleep and the damn mouse shines brighter than Times Square...

otherwise, its a 10/10!
just lurking around...

i currently have a light but i used to have a heavy, however it was wireless so it was pretty much bad but i still prefer heavy mouses over light ones, maybe the fact that i don't use a mousepad also has to do with it ;o

I like heavy mice just because I like having resistance when i use it. With a light mouse its like nothing so when you use it in a tight situation u tend to over extend the distance, Although everyone has there own preference. So go light if u want

I've been using DeathAdder for 6 months and when it comes to RTS it's the real WristDeathAdder. Mouse is very heavy and You have to keep Your fingers on it all the time since the buttons need more pressure to be clicked (notice how pros barely keep their fingers on the buttons, using just their fingers' weight to click). My first 100-150 games were real hell, after each 5 games I had to take a break because of hand pain. Since buying DA my performance got slightly better though. I still don't like few things about it like being heavy or buttons stiffness but it's generally good mouse, just not for RTSes.

I like the lightness of my Salmosa for SC and computer use in general (surfing, working, etc). However, I like my IME 3.0 (slightly heavy - I wouldn't call it light) when it comes to FPS games. I have both plugged in and just switch between the two depending on what I'm doing, but the Salmosa definitely gets more usage. I wish I had an MX300. I would use that for everything.

Light for me, but probably it depends a lot in everyone strength and what are you trying to do, I mean, when I play SC I move the mouse a lot, but not hard, just quick, the precision needed to micro lies a lot in the speed and less in accuracy, even if u are going medic-marine vs lurker, u need to pick "some marines" to split ur army. In macro, is a lot about to speed too, you go to your group of gateways or rracs, or factories, and just spam a key all the way, the structures are big, so that's no problem. ofc if u want to do some awesome micro like, kill a lurker with 2 marines and a science vessel, you will need some accuracy to pick each unit at time.

May be in FPS I will prefer a heavy mouse because I don't have a lot of strength in my hands, so, when I will target someone y need the mouse to stop just when I want to (or even before), and i don't want my screen moving like a 300 apm sc player because I cant see a thing being so fast

i think mine is a medium. its not light or heavy, i got a ps2 laser mouse. works pretty well.

for the record, i was trying a laptop mouse- very tiny- for a while. when i was trying to increase my APM for Starcraft. it did very very little for me. even though its probably 1/3 as light.

id say its got more to do with the size of your hand than the weight, assuming its not made of lead... there really isnt much weight there.

I hate heavy mice. I also hate the ones that are designed for one hand (left or right, doesn't matter). I feel much more in control with a light symmetrical mouse. I have a copperhead and it is perfect.

The "heaviest" mosue I used was the MX510 (which is basically a MX518/G5 with a worse sensor). Good mouse, but after using lighter mice like the Diamondback and Mini Optical I can't see myself going back.

unfortunately i use a laptop to play starcraft. and since all laptop mouses are small, they are lightweight. normal mouses have weird sensitivity settings for laptops and just dont feel right. anyone else play starcraft on laptops?

For RTS it doesnt make sense to have a heavy mouse, because there is no point to lots of sweeping motion in starcraft, you tend to move the mouse with your fingers, so lightweight is good.

From a race specific standpoint if you look at a race such as toss that requires considerable less speed than terran, but far more precision, then high sensitivities and heavy mouses may complement eachother, but a light mouse probably makes more sense.

In FPS if you use a higher sensitivity, the you will need some degree of control and in a large sweeping motion that may very well come from the weight of your mouse (or some decadent mouse pad who knows its FPS. Popular FPS mice are also shaped to facilitate the predominant left/right wrist motion such as a razer copperhead so that can play a bigger role than weight.

One thing to consider is the ratio of the size/shape of the mouse to the weight. Contours are fairly common in large mice, and if your mouse is built to fit your hand like a glove (usually your right hand) and sort of finger movement is crippled but you atleast get a good grip on it. An example would be the Logitech MX510, where you have a great grip on the mouse and the weight inside of it should get ripped out, and unsurprisingly the MX518 did not come with a weight because it didnt require one. A non contoured large mouse (microsoft intellimouse status) probably would fare well with a small ammount of additional weight. But with a small mouse such as a any mouse ranging from a stock logitech optical to the razer salmosa, there is absolutely no reason for a weight.

I use a very light (and also very cheap) mouse, when I first picked it up I thought it was just a shell.
My dad uses a wireless mouse, I can't imagine playing with that, it's so heavy, I can move it but I think that sort of mouse would be better for shooters.

I wouldn't really call my mouse "heavy"... it's a G5 with about 30% of the max weight in it. It's tough to vote in a poll like this due to how we would define the terms light and heavy, but I suppose I would rather have my mouse get heavier rather than lighter. If it was too light I'd really be affected by every little particle on my desktop surface.

i prefer light mouses. maybe heavy ones are a bit more accurate, but i think it's not that comfortable to play with a heavy one. i have a mx510 and it's wight is exactly how i need it.

edit:
after thinking about it again i'd say it doesn't really matter how heavy your mouse is. you just have to get used to it and it will be fine.

Yeah i think that size is more important than weight, I got one of the G5's where you can change the weight and serously i don't feel the difference

Haha OP uses a radioshack brand mouse. Yes gigaware is from radioshack and so is that number i know because i used to work there.

Light mouse is better. I like light mice that aren't super tiny, i need a good grip on it at least.

does the g3 count as light or heavy? Either way I've never had any problems rise from the weight of a mouse.
yes.

I use a light mouse, its just a generic optical mouse from microsoft but i like it because it fits to the contour of my hand. Some people i know use the heavier mice because they like to move their hand more and it feels like they have more control.

Well I am fanatic about mouse weight. I am using a LMO and I have added my touch.

1) removed mouse scroll
2) removed scroll switch - which is soldered to the board
3) removed 3rd button micro switch - soldered to the board (when u press down the mouse scroll)
4) removed all the stickers (yea the stickers and the adhesive glue adds to the wieght)
5) removed the screw driver holding the upper body to the chassis
6) removed mouse skate

The only thing left to do is:
1) Replace the thick usb cable of LMO with the thin usb cables that comes with razer mouse.

Seriously? While doing that you've at most removed a couple grams of weight and played multiple games of russian roulette with your mouse.

I prefer a bit heavier mouse, currently G5 with most of weights used. Gives more firm feeling but is still fast and smooth enough to execute commands etc.
Also helps a bit if I get bit startled in intesive FPS.

I just use a logitech mini optical with the weight removed. Although because one of the mouse feet came off, I had to use aluminum tape ala http://www.gideontech.com/content/articles/201/1 and it works at least as well as before.

What the hell? That's a lot of work on an already tiny mouse... Wow, not in a negative way. I'm just genuinely surprised.

Light > heavy.

the force necessary to accelerate an object x meters/second/second is proportion directly to its mass. The more massive, the harder it will be to change direction. Thus, the lighter the mouse, the better control.

Someone needs a lesson in tracking sensitivity. People who use a heavier mouse will have greater sensitivity settings and they can move the pointer just as far, just as fast as someone with a lighter mouse.

I prefer a large, moderately heavy mouse because:

1. Heavy mouse / high sensitivity combination requires less free space for the mouse to move around, which works well in a cramped environment, and more importantly
2. A large mouse feels better in my hand than a small, light one.

Since my hand is big, I need a large mouse so it'll feel better (not too big, but i dont want a tiny laptop mouse)

And a moderately heavy mouse. I don't like over sensitive mouses that shoot out in a direction just from the slightest touch. I want something with a little resistance

Physics is physics. All other things equal, it will take longer to manipulate a heavy object than a light one. My argument has nothing to do with size, though surface area of the contact between the mouse and your pad/table will have a huge influence on the static friction (the barrier of force you have to break to get the mouse moving.)

Thus, neither of your points are valid:
1.) Heavy mouse/ high sensitivity requires less free space than a heavy mouse/ high sensitivity, or a light mouse on low sensitivity. That is not to say a heavy mouse/ high sensitivity requires less free space than a light mouse/ high sensitivity.
2.) A large mouse can also be a light mouse. Just to play some extremes, if you had two mouse(s) of the same size, one weighing in at 0.5 kilos and the other so light that the additional resistance provided by its mass is negligible compared the air resistance surrounding your hand, I think the option would be obvious. You make the argument for fit between hand and mouse, and it is entirely irrelevant to the mass of the mouse.
I'll race you to defeatism... you win.

I like heavy better, it feels easier to stop on and be precise with.

Just my 2 cents
