around 30 WPM is the speed of an average internet user. 50-60 WPM is the speed of an average office worker. around 80 WPM plus is the speed of a professional typist. 100 plus WPM is the speed of an advanced professional typist.
100 WPM might have been the speed of an advanced professional typist in the 80's, but with people growing up with computers these days, it's nothing special.
109 from the test i took a couple seconds ago. ~5-10 wpm increase from a year ago, meh. lolol 9.99 for a certificate stating what you know you can already do ! http://www.typingtest.com/certificate.asp
lol i had this demo that had about the same paragraphs to type, and i remember having an easy time with the aesop's one. so naturally that's the one i picked
I did this test a year or two ago, and it was about 145 WPM with 100% accuracy. Since then I've stopped writing as much so I don't get as much practice simply typing fast. People keep blankly staring at me from across a room at my typing, but it's honestly nothing special.
I don't think 100 can be the speed of a professional typist >.>. I learned to type this fast just by being on the internet a lot and playing a couple mmo's, I'm sure that many others are the same.

Yeah, it seems weird that 100 should be "professional typist." That's like... teenage IRC fast, not professional typist fast.
100 for professional typist rofl what does that make all the 150+ fellows here? im pretty sure professional typists type at around 150 100 is something you type if you use computers often and for a long time. if you actually take classes and practice typing specifically, you can achieve way faster times.. i don't even know any "proper" way to type, yet i still type easily in the 100-150 range
Professional typists are probably typing up information from a piece of paper (hence why they can't just copy and paste) which would slow the typing speed. Also, I'm sure there's a lot of people here retaking the same test twice, which means they're memorizing the words instead of just typing what they see. Last, professional typists are typing for hours, because it's their job, which means they're not going to be typing their very quickest constantly. It's also possible the typist is typing up really awkward notes and crap from legal or scientific notes, which means the words are not as familiar and therefore not as easy to type.

Depending on the test, I range from that (as a high), and about 70 wpm (as a low). The astronaut test was really hard for me, because of the ridiculous amount of punctuation (and oddly used punctuation. I've never seen people space the double-dash thing before, and that threw me off every time). I type very improperly though. My left hand hits the "y" button, for instance, which I know is not the way I am supposed to type. And I use the first two fingers on my right hand almost exclusively, except for my pinky finger hitting the shift/enter key, and my ring finger hitting backspace and the occasional semi-colon or slash mark.
I don't even know peoples APM... If you took the time to find a thread where people posted theirs why didn't you take the time to do another search on WPM? There has already been one(at least one).
I remember being 120+ in my 8th grade computer class. I'm pretty sure that I'm a lot slower now.
Also, that speed test is really easy. All the words are simple and the only character used other than letters is an apostrophe. I got 165 WPM my first try on that which is not accurate unless you're transposing letters written by children.
Even in grade school we had to use numbers in them as part of the test... and... dollar signs and what not.
Edit: back in 9th grade, in my computer class we had to learn to touch type as part of the course. The test was to type at least 32 wpm. I'm in 12th grade now. Sigh, how the times have passed

Eh 100 WPM is actually pretty damn fast to be honest. I wouldn't consider it professional typist either but it's pretty damn close.
What gets me though is the average internet speed is 30... there is no way the average speed is just 30. I'd expect it to be near about 60 or so myself. I hit 100+ just being on the computer a lot and playing MMO and such.
I was at 135 WPM when I was a freshman in high school. My teacher was all praising me because her WPM was like 98 and mine was way faster than that(and my typing technique was really weird... typing with just a few of my fingers instead of the whole home key bullshit). I hit 135 typing 'correctly', but, since then, I took this test and I scored 89 WPM.

I'm a professional typist? lol no way. hahaha and my accuracy is kinda scary. wierd, but i've typed all my life.. and plus, what jobs really require "fast typing" only? really? if there's a job that only requires copying of text onto computer, i'd do it in a heartbeat.. but other skills are always required.. that's why I don't value my speed typing as much. a-men!
Sorry for the bump but this interests me, I'd like to know if there is any correlation between WPM/CPM and APM. I'm surprised people aren't interested and didn't list their avg APM
Mine is probably 30-40 apm, spiking up to as high as 70APM!!!
First time I did the test I got 99WPM 100% accuracy (I did however have to go back and correct a few things)... yet I have horrible M+K control in Starcraft2. It seems the reason for that is different hand positioning and generally being bad at knowing what to do in SC2
Either way, 500cpm is a pretty beastly mark when you consider it, even though many people have achieved it, it goes to show the power of the mind and muscle-memory.

Is this correct? I would imagine a professional typist should be hitting at least 120. I'm nowhere near professional (I dont even do it for anything other than games and essays) and I can hit 100+...
This is probably written somewhere already in the past 4 pages, but interested to see now, because I think average WPM raises significantly every year.
I think the main thing Jombozeus is consistency! Through muscle memory you make less mistakes and you also become accustomed to dealing with those mistakes, I recorded my typing and I can correct things very fast, instantly pressing the return key the right amount of times.
When you first start learning, if you force yourself to not use the keyboard, once you start getting the hang of it it DOES increase with drastic speed! However I've found a slight plateau at the 100-110 WPM mark. However I do believe professional would constitute immaculate grammar and punctuation ALONGSIDE the speed. I'm only kinda fast with ' " - @ ; : ! , . and 'shift' so Capital letters aren't an issue and again, they do slow me down a bit by roughly 10-15 WPM.
I would consider myself just a fast typist. I could become professional easy if I was to pursue an audio-typists position.
However, half my problem nowadays is I'm actually thinking about what I'm saying resulting in, effectively, probably 30-40 wpm... the speed of your average hunting and pecking typist.
On a computer (labtop) that i use at work and am not entirely comfortable with yet, i managed to get 63 WPM with 3 errors that went uncorrected. I will edit my post when i try this on my Netbook computer, which i am very experienced with.
Edit: And I usually average around 70APM while playing SC2.

Yes but most people use their native language when typing. I had problems when writing the text because the words wasn't like my native language words. I had to think about it and muscle memory was tilting me because of it.
I never learned the 10 finger system properly though and still use kinda my own system. And I'm probably faster writing code than texts, since I'm a programmer and that's what I usually do.
Also I still found it a bit harder to type those texts in english, even though I'd consider my english to be quite good. And I'm just prone to always correct my mistakes, since in programming you can't just leave a typo in there.
I somehow can type C code 8 hours a day, but I'd probably go mad if I had to type actual sentences. Not sure if this makes any sense ...
I forgot to mention, while i type, i don't use homerow. I just found it didn't seem to help with my typing skills, only slow them down. I don't know if all that was true, but i just don't use homerow.

I type quite literally with two fingers (I poke the keys one at a time, and never have more than one finger touching the keyboard at the same time) and I average around 100-110 WPM. My APM, on the other hand, is usually around 30-40 when playing against Master league players.
I really don't see how there's any correlation at all between the two, considering most APM is just pointless spam in the first place, and in theory your max APM would be the same as your CPM (which in my case was like 600). The thing is, you're never going to be anywhere near your max, and your average is largely dependent on how much you want to spam and I don't feel that a higher WPM increases the desire to spam any.

Ok well I don't spam at all and I guess I could use a better word than correlation. I was wondering if maybe there's some kind of relation to do with the limits of an individuals dexterity.
Most of the issue is knowing what you're going to do next, but in theory someone who can reach 100wpm but not 140wpm with ease.. probably won't increase in apm from 70apm upwards (based on what Day[9] says about only needing around 70 effective APM) without a LOT of time spent playing. But then again starcraft involves different skills and requirements as a prerequisite to be able to make use of effective APM
feel my APM currently is limited by my game sense/knowledge of the game and simply that I haven't reached any degree of competence yet.
with regards to this you have to consider that on a keyboard you have 8 fingers in contact with a vast amount of keys.
Ultimately, upon further pondering, it's a pretty ineffective question I'm asking. But I find it interesting to some degree none the less.

Indeed, it's interesting in multiple ways. For example, with a WPM of around 100... you're typing at nearly 600 CPM. So, in theory, a Starcraft player could play with that much APM.
Obviously, you would have time to do anything other than spam, so you would lose... but I think it's cool to know that the theoretical APM limit is literally six or seven times higher than what you actually need to play the game effectively. I feel that this shows the limit in APM needed is due to game limitations rather than human limitations.
73 WPM. I am pretty fast with the regular letters, but I lose so much time with the semicolons and quotes and anything that isn't a letter or a period.
It's very slightly higher than my average APM in a mediumish length game.

I was backspacing on some words, trying to correct errors. To be honest I really want to increase my typing speed, I wish I were more motivated to practice (or do anything, tbh, lol)

Yeah, this sounds a little fishy... especially after checking out Wikipedia and doing some searching on Google.
From Wikipedia, "As of 2005[update], writer Barbara Blackburn was the fastest English language typist in the world, according to The Guinness Book of World Records. Using the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, she has maintained 150 words per minute (wpm) for 50 minutes, and 170 wpm for shorter periods. She has been clocked at a peak speed of 212 wpm. Blackburn, who failed her QWERTY typing class in high school, first encountered the Dvorak keyboard in 1938, quickly learned to achieve very high speeds, and occasionally toured giving speed-typing demonstrations during her secretarial career. She appeared on The David Letterman Show and felt she was made a spectacle of.[5] Blackburn died in April 2008.[5]"
82 is the highest i could get. i find it hard to type while not looking at my screen. also its quite easy to [ress to buttons at the same time at mu steelseries 7g
2nd try on fastest as possible: Gross WPM: 98 Adjusted WPM: 96 (2 errors).
Had to correct like 10 words because when I type fast I usually reverse 2 letters so I press backspace really quick. If I didn't do that my WPM probably goes over 100

Rofl.
I hit around ~140 with 100% accuracy for prolonged periods, but can "max" at 155+ with 100% accuracy if I'm taking one of those one/two minute typing tests.
Interestingly, I can't actually type faster than around 165 even with mistakes. It's quite strange.
EDIT: This is on my Thinkpad laptop. Goddamn Lenovo makes good keyboards. EDIT2: I've also played classical piano since I was four (lulz).
127 wpm typing in 5ch. format (every 5 characters) is equal to 1 word.
^ Includes spaces/and any other forms that require a keying.
127x5 = 635 keys per minute.
Doing finals testing on my Business Technology program I got 100% percent accuracy, losing points not on mistypes but on poor hand configuration, I type cross keyboard style (as in my right hand has full functionality to hit caps lock/tab on left side including all the letters on the left hand of the keyboard with fluency so I actually type as if I were playing a piano ... In a weak sense I suppose) and the Vice Verse applies.
Net Speed: 54 WPM Accuracy: 96% Gross Speed:56 WPM
The stupid capitalization and punctuation killed my speed hardcore...
EDIT: After realizing that the 'test instructions' test one is the easiest (minimal punctuation/repeating letters with words like 'errors') I got: Net Speed of 72 WPM 100% accuracy Gross Speed of 72 WPM
I type by looking at the keyboard (ie never learnt to touch type) so i had to pause every few seconds to look at the next piece of text. I'm sure that I xould do faster if it were being real aloud or something.
50 =/ Just bougt a new gaming keyboard though and since I'm starting school soon I figured I should buy it in the layout of the country I actually live in now which is Norway... It's a little weird, compared to American keyboards everything's just a little, ... off. This affects my play too which suuuuuuuuucks. -.-
I actually did this exact same test a couple of months ago, but I have a question. I did the "enchanted typewriter" like 10 times a few months ago to see how high I could get my wpm, and I got up to like 108 with 0 errors, but now when I go back to it a lot of the words are missing. Like sentences are completely messed up and stuff. One of the sentences was "even among those who know I am not given to romancing", but when i just took this test it was like "even among know i am not given". There were many other examples of this, and I was wondering if they are doing this on purpose?
I like that my wpm was "off the charts" in the graph it displays that only goes up to 100 :o, reading these replies I find out im not actually the fastest typer in the world, which it seems like sometimes in my rl environment ^^.

78 WPM here (85-7) for errors.
It's not that great, but there are two things to consider. 1. I never learned how to type properly, despite owning one of those games that's supposed to teach you how. I'm a touch typist. I use my index fingers to type, and my ring finger to hit the shift key for caps. I guess I've gotten to a pretty decent speed because I've been doing it so long.
I'm on my old laptop. I had to send in my new one for repairs, so I'm on this old one. It's a little larger, and has those old-fashioned beys (mechanical?), while my new one has nice little chiclet ones (or whatever they're called). My damn shift key is a little off.

You might be slowing yourself down by taking time to finish a word before acknowledging the next. I perform better on the tests when I read a word, begin to type, and then read the next word while typing the current. This leads itself to a more free flowing feel. That or even reading an entire sentence then reciting it as your own words.
I scored a range of 65-100 taking all the different test types. Errors ranging from 0-5.
I was able to consistantly hit 130-132 a year or so ago, but I've done less typing and more making roaches since I've started playing SC2 and graduated from High School and started college. Although I gotta tell you, when I took my writing I and writing II class, and I"d wait to do a 7 page paper the day it's due, I'm sure my WPM was way way up there, lol.

these tests are biased, in english you type 20% faster (avg word ~5) than in german (avg word ~6). furthermore english has less "weird" letters, so its harder to type in languages where you have öäü or éà and stuff like that.

Yeah, I think it's a little off too. I have a friend who's a secretary and types at something like 130 and complains that she thinks she's too slow compared to other people.
I on the other hand type at a comfortable 70 words per minute. Go me!
130 WPM with 100% accuracy the first time. Tried a couple more times and got slightly higher gross WPM but made errors - each time my adjusted WPM was exactly 130!
I AM a professional typist and so many people here can type as fast or faster than me - I obviously need to step it up (especially after Cataclysmical calls his 143 WPM "mildly disappointing")!
1) 131 100% accuracy (enchanted type writer) 2) 140 97% -- 136 adjusted (test instructions -- lol ran out of text to write..) 3) 136 97% -- 132 adjusted (Dorothy)
on my laptop. I recall scoring 140+ on a test like 2-3 years ago so I think I'm plateauing here at 130-140; not sure why. I think that test was only common words though, not punctuation so that could explain it. Still, I used to get 110-120 about 1-2 years before that, so my progress, if any, has definitely slowed down.
Probably to get much faster than the 130-140 range would require some special training for me. Ah well.
135ish, 140 on a good day here. Probably about average among people whove been playing RTS for a decade+
Then again, I was able to hit 140 when I was in 8th grade, so its stayed the same since before I started playing competitively - probably just from growing up with nothing but the internet for fun lol
114 words, 595 characters per minute.... which is funny since my APM in sc2 is about 60. : P
Edit: And I practiced a couple of times before I got that result.. I'm not gonna be a smug douche like the other guys in the thread and say that typing fast is EZ NO PROBLEM FIRST TRY MAN.
As a typical student with no practice outside of chat/essays and the like, I can hit 115 WPM on passages with larger portions of commonly used words and not too much punctuation; no training besides initially learning to type. Not bad for somebody who doesn't actively practice or try to improve etc, but honestly it's not too quick.

Why do people keep complaining about the punctuation? It's part of typing. The test isn't to see how fast you can txt lk dis 2 ur frndz. >.> Nice score, btw. Quite good.
I'm not talking about typing like that. It's about interpretation. When you're reading the text that you're writing, you have to interpret what's written, which delays your typing. If you see a word and it's got quotation marks, that slows you down, especially when you're trying to type as fast as possible. When you're typing like this, just writing a post and you know what you're typing because it's in your head, punctuation is no issue. For a WPM test, it seems counterproductive to include punctuation in there.

^ He reached 10k exactly and got nuked.
Amazing.
Damn lol. Though it seems he stopped posting after his 10k post? i'm trying to see if that's true, or maybe he asked to get banned or something lol
he apparently had 23 bans total, 5 being "perm" bans o.o so I guess permanent bans can be repealed or something?
Anyways, 10,000 posts apparently isn't enough to stop TL from banning you (nuke means "perm" banned right?) nor cutting you enough slack from banning you ^^ then again, i'm already at 7xxx, nearing 10,000 soon heheh.
I've been having fun with this. My left hand has been feeling a bit sluggish recently in games. So i've been doing the speedtest lefthand only. Yes that even means holding shift down and pressing a button with my left hand only and if i make a mistake using my left hand to hit backspace.
Its kinda fun and i'm at 34 WPM with just left hand.
110 wpm (551 cpm) 1 error 109 adjusted. Also, that curve that shows the distribution of typing speeds kind of fooled me. I thought I typed average. O____________O....

No, a lot of people do that. However, if he just start to learn to type using all of your fingers, you can really get it much higher. Just keep your fingers over the home row for the most part.
Anyway, I am incredibly disappointed in my results. I got 63 with 94% accuracy. Fuck. I need to lean to type more quickly. Seriously.
Shit... I guess me cheating in typing class as a kid by looking down at my hands is hurting me now. I'm averaging about 40
Good thing it's not necessary for my job... Are there any free games you guys could recommend to help me out? I've been wanting to improve for a long time.
Edit: nvm, was still cheating during the first try... Lets say more like 17 wpm. Pretty sad huh...

If you like reading... instead of reading the next book you plan to read, type it out!
I'm pretty sure most of us got fast by typing a lot... usually through blogs, chats, forums, etc. I'm sure typing games are helpful if that's your thing, but I don't know which ones in specific have a good reputation =/

With 17 wpm he's gonna need YEARS for a book with 400 pages.

Haha that's a good idea but I think i'll just make sure I practice a little everyday. I was never really into blogs, AIM, all that stuff so I got out of practice. Writing papers in college wasn't a problem cuz typing from my head plus looking down occasionally gets me about 50 wpm or more.

Typeracer is a fun way to constantly be trying to type faster. You won't improve your speed unless you're consciously trying to (or at least, it will increase much slower). My WPM has been about 90 for the past 10 years
