I'd make a poll, but I honestly wouldn't know which films to put up there. I've got some spare time, and I want to watch some good movies.

I'll second The Lives of Others

Best in recent years is Ne le dis à personne aka Tell No One imo.

I don't know if it's the best movie, but I enjoyed Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona a lot. A friend of mine said it was one of the worst movies he ever saw. He didn't like the idea of having a narrator...

Slumdog millionaire is also very good. I don't watch a lot of "serious movies", but mainly action or comedy films when I just wanna chill with some friends.

Yes totally agreed...

Back to the OP post it depends on the type of movie you like... For instance, do you find "Meet the Spartans" type of movie under the comedy genre funny? Or "Don't mess with the Zohan" funny"? I know people who love one but hate the other. I love both... lol. Another comparison in the "fairy tale" genre is "Harry Potter" series vs LOTR series. Some just hate one but absolutely love the other. So it is good if you have some preference mentioned so it's more likely the recommendation suits you.

Must say there have been few movies that are really impressive the last couple of years. Seems like everything big is a spin-off of something else and new concepts always lack something. One that comes to mind is Juno. Oh, and I thoroughly enjoying Superbad as well, but it depends who you watch this with.

I still haven't seen Gran Torino tho, that's one for this week.

I completely disagree with Batman Begins, Dark Knight, V for Vendetta, and Transformers .
Dark Knight and transformers are pretty good but not really awesomely great, V/Begins just sucks.

New Wolverine movie is pretty good though

You cant compare them like that, obviously they have different types of target audience. The Illusionist is a family movie

Dark Knight is the personal favorite because I grow up on batman and this is the best batmovie ever.

Recently watched The Wrestler and the 2 part movie on Mesrine, all good stuff. Also Sex Drive, quite lowbrow but it's amazing to watch how someone can still make a good movie out of a beaten to death genre.

But I'm here to dis a few movies.

1. the departed. it is a horrible remake of an awesome film, the actors just didn't deliver. Check out the original, Infernal Affairs from HK, with subs of course, for a better experience. Also check out part 2 of it (not a sequel, it's made with the trilogy in mind), though I don't blame you if you skip the 3rd.

2. Slumdog Millionaire. ok this is actually a pretty good film, it worked on many levels, just not enough to be a great movie, but the fact that this got Best Picture just killed it for me. I have no idea why people are raving after this film.

3. walle. another good film, just very overrated - #41 on imdb? yous gotsta be shitting me

Ik work at a cinema, these are really good:

Der Baader-Meinhof komplex
About a terrist/idealist group in Germany fighting against the government

Watchmen
Hero's, who used to live among the people, start to fight back. This movie has a bad ending but it is a great movie to watch if you like the hero/magic powers genre

Ip man
About a friendly kungfu master who can smack anyones ass like savior used to.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (now in cinema)
This film is a prequel about Wolverine and how he got his iron skeleton and lost his memory. I saw it yesterday and its really good. But if you want to see this one right now, you need to watch it in the cinema.

But thats just my own taste. As i read the recommendations others gave you i realised that everyone has there own taste. I for one thought that Into the wild was a nice story, but fitted better in a book then a movie. I like my movies fastpaced and into the wild is not, not at all.

I've left out comedy movies because any comedy will do in my opinion. Wall-E, Kungfu Panda or other comedies are always fun, but it's a whole other genre.

The movies i recommend are harsh, fast paced and are mostly with violence in them. Love it
We shouldnt recreate anger of the non-virtual world

Yea I know.

People will always go the original is always better no matter what. If you judge it objectively without the "original is better" bias, then it is obvious The Departed is better.

In Bruges. Brilliant movie.

And i don't get it how some many people vote Slumdog Millionaire when the things that were well-done (image, setting, the whole growing-up thing) were done better in Cidade de Deus and the things that were different (like the story) weren't really that good...

That's not true. For example the BSG remake is much, much better than the original and I doubt many people would say otherwise.

The Departed is only better for the "I watch and appreciate only/mostly Hollywood films" bunch of people -.- I don't blame you.
That being said I enjoyed The Departed too, just not as much (but I knew the original before I watched The Departed, which is probably not the case for many people).

IMO the movie that Heath Ledger should be remembered by instead of The Dark Knight. He was so much better as a gay cowboy.

Also, Big FIsh is undoubtably one of my absolute favorites.

Best: The Dark Knight. (The sales number speaks for itself?)
comedy: Get smart : D (never seen a better spy comedy movie)
animated: wall-e
instant classic: the prestige (drama, tragedy, passion, desperation all into one)
worst....: Jonas Brother's in 3D (ewwwwwkkkksss)

If you don't trust me on any of these... at least trust me on the last one.

I second that, as a directors achievement the movie is miles ahead of the Matrix 2,3. As a matter of fact its the very first project of the brothers, they just finished it after they got famous

Maybe this was just poorly worded but, you know the brothers didn't direct it right? V was directed by James McTeigue, who was the AD on the Matrix films. There's also a rumor he's going to direct the Magneto film in the X-Men Origins set.

Let the Right One In was a great movie imo so +1

trying to think of some that haven't been mentioned yet...

Primer - Low budget indie movie that's just great

Seven Pounds - kinda a chick flick, still quite good though

Sunshine - I enjoyed it, but i don't know if most would. Sci Fi about some retards that need to refuel the sun

Einstien and Eddington - Good story about Einstien and his difficulties getting people to listen to him and ect. Good for science buffs i suppose? Enjoyable

RocknRolla - Pretty good, if you like similar movies, you'll like this one.

Yeah right, the punching and kicking of dark knight sucked because the other climatic scenes (Like how batman saved all the hostages in an abandoned building and the car chases was so fucking AWESOME and INTENSE) that's why punching and kicking didn't deliver at all.

Dunno if I am the only one that thinks Hitman was the first really good game-based movie that actually stayed very true with the game and therefor was much better than anything game based i saw before.

Into the Wild is one of my favourites of all time. Pretty much everyone I know loves Wall-E, Pan's Labrynth and The Departed. Nice choices.

EDIT: Reading through the thread, I'm also going to second Taken and Dark Knight. I don't know if I'd call any of these MUST-SEE movies though, except maybe Pan's Labryth and Dark Knight. While I love Into The Wild, I think (actually I know, from experience) that it doesn't appeal to a majority of people, but if it's your kind of thing you'll love it. Wall-E was extremely well polished, someone mentioned ratatouille, I guess really if you're into animated films, Pixar produces the best so you should watch all of their stuff.
Their are four errors in this sentance.

You may want to break this up into different categories, because having people give you the top movies, will bury some others you wouldn't have seen. I recently saw Grave of the Fireflies. I didn't know a movie could be that depressing.

Into the Wild, no doubt for me. It's actually one of my favorites of all time next to The Fountain and Stalker. I don't think a movie could ever touch me as much as this one. It wasn't perfect though but I believe Sean Penn was the perfect person to make this movie a success. Emile Hirsche is one of my favorite actors too, and Kristen Stewart is <3.

Close second would be There Will Be Blood, close third No Country for Old Men.

Most movies that came out in the past few years were really terrible =/\

I thought it was pretty amazing, with the new (ok maybe not new, but it was refreshing) first-person camera-shot that was later used by REC, as well as the slow revealing of the monster and the plot and everything.

I can see how some people might like that kinds of movies. I personally didn't buy into the whole first person view with shaky cameras and poor story. The whole movie was basically about nothing with a boring ending.

On the topic of cloverfield, watching the first half hour of that made me feel queasy. It had some boring kid romance and a really shaky camera filming nothing.

Edit: I would recommend Boondock Saints but that came out in 99. Apparently there weren't very many memorable movies that people can recall from the past couple years.

Got that right. I think the character introduction was kind of too long. There were some people who actually left the theater because they thought they were watching the wrong movie rofl.

Probably V for Vendetta, and Into the Wild for me. Into the Wild is probably one of my favorite books, and the movie came through.

I'll also mention the Lord of the Rings movies that came out. Maybe some of them weren't as true to the book as they should have been, but they still had good acting.

The Prestige is also another movie that I really liked. The plot was engaging and the acting was well done. Go tesla!

You have great taste in movies my friend. Stalker is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best movie I've ever seen. I would also recommend Solayris (not the remake with Clooney), another great movie by Tarkovskij.

Tell no One, french movie, crimedrama, interesting twisted plot

300. yeah it may have no plot and shitty dialogues. but if you didnt enjoy this your a fag

There Will be Blood. i didnt like Magnolia at all, but this is a great movie, daniel day lewis´ character was the deepest ive ever on film

also lol at people saying WALL-E.

i also think the first Batman movie, Batman begins, was better than the Dark Knight, its ridiculously overrated on imdb, because hearth ledger, an actor who never played in a film worth watching, died of an overdose, which makes everyone think, omg his character must be so deep.

To me 300 was amazing not because of the extremelly well made fight scenes, but for the precedent it started, now eveyone expects Zack Snyder to do mind fucking comic book adaptions which are awesome... and i remembered me of rome total war.

A few comments on the movie recommended in this thread thus far:

300 was a pretty good movie imo, not particulary realistic but enjoyable. In my oppinion, Watchmen is one of the biggest failures I have yet to lay eyes on but maybe that's just me. Somehow a blue guy (which penis can be seen the whole movie) going emo isn't quite appealing to me.

I've seen a lot of people mention The Dark Knight. While it's a good movie, action packed and it's dose of drama and subliminal messages, it's not a movie that rests in one's memory as incredible or amazing. A good action movie, a bit overrated but nothing more imo.

Slumdog Millionaire wasn't that good imo, I'd probably rate The Curios Case of Benjamin Buttons to be more interesting and entertaining.

Milk, the movie with the gay dude and polithics proved to be quite uninteresting to me so I stopped watching it after 10 minutes, maybe someone with more patience and insight can comment on that one.

I recently watched Ip Man, and all I can say is that I just loved it. Loved it, loved it. Has a lot of nice fights and a very interesting storyline that kept me atleast on the edge of my seat. So if you have some spare time on your hands watch Ip Man and The Curios Case of Benjamin Buttons, those are the only movie that actually let an impression on me in the last weeks.

Ip Man was awesome. Great kung-fu movie.

no country for old men/dark knight, Iron man The wrestler, slumdog millionaire, gran torino(even though the acting sucked- it had funny acting from clint eastwood) were good movies in the last couple years.

Seriously iron man and batman begins were brilliant movies, they were just overshadowed by dark knight, even though batman begins is just a smidgen worse than the dark knight.

And no country for old men was amazing.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (somewhat satirical detective/crime movie, some of the best lines ever, really good performance by Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr.)

And I will second The Assassination of Jesse James, I was stunned by that movie.

I think both of these movies are a little under the radar, but amazing.

Edit: I don't know what the big deal is with the Dark Knight, 300 is terrible but in a good way (I'd watch either movie again if I were really bored and had a snack), I'd wouldn't watch Wall-E again, I thought it was lousy.
May the BeSt man win.

When I rate movies, I always seem to take audience into account.

For example, the first time I watched The Departed, people were laughing at the jokes from the beginning to the end and it was great.
I watched it again with another group of people and there were hardly any laughs =/
Still, the first time left a very good impression.

Anyway from 2005 on:
The Departed
Juno
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (def. the most fun of any movie)

So I don't know if these are the best movies but they left the most memorable impressions.
Dark Knight too of course, which everyone loved, but I thought was overrated. Probably like Iron Man more than TDK.

From the very few movies I've seen in the cinema I'll have to say The Black Knight.
And the Bourne Trilogy is fucking sick, I highly recommend it.

A lot of people have a stupid outlook that because it's a Pixar kids/family movie that it can't be considered really good. But honestly it was incredible how the animators were able to convey such emotion from the characters who had very little facial expression, ie robots without eyebrows or mouths are still able to look surprised or shocked, etc. Maybe I'm wording this poorly but I think most people who've seen it will know what I mean.

I also thought The Dark Knight was really over-rated.
I liked, V for Vendetta and The Departed.

I enjoyed Casino Royale as well but not as a candidate for Best Movie.

Really love this movie. Bought it with my last batch of bought dvd's and watched it today. Really gives you another perspective on life. I think it's a little short though, they could've added maybe 15 more minutes and I'm a sucker for a cheesy ending so they could've dragged it out some more.

Really great kung-fu / action film. It's about the life of Ip Man who is Bruce Lee's initiation master. It's very loosely based off of his life though so don't expect to watch some boring biographical movie. It's primarily an action film with a really interesting story. My only complaint is that it's too short =/

A great action/gangster film. If you're a fan of Snatch then you will definitely like this. It's not as good as snatch but it was still a really enjoyable film with great story and really funny characters.

It's a children story basically, but very nicely done (first animation i saw in 3D). I personally enjoyed it .

Can't recommend Ip Man enough. So good.

When I saw Dark Knight the first time, I was blown away at how good it was. Follow up viewings, it loses some of its punch. I honestly think that Iron Man is more suitable for watching multiple times. Both set an incredibly high standard for future comic book movies though, for which I am grateful.

And just for kicks, I'd recommend The Rundown. It's stupid fun, and Christopher Walken is a genius.

It's overrated, but it didn't suck. Like 7/10 IMO

In the last couple years... It's hard to really say... In the last 2 years the best movie I've seen is The Dark Knight, but it wasn't exactly a movie that made me think or go 'holy shit, I'll never be the same again' when I came out, the way a great movie does.

I dunno. Nothing blew my mind, and I'm not going to list all the movies I just liked. The Invasion remake with Daniel Craig is worth seeing, but it's not what I'd call a good movie

Oh, actually... Pu-239 was a really good movie. Death at a Funeral was a pretty good comedy... Neither of which I suspect many saw.

How do people hate V For Vendetta? ._.

And Transformer? You just have to expect what you're gonna get - I went in just wanting to see giant robots beat the shit out of each other, and that's what I got, and I was satisfied ^^

A ridiculous amount of people will say "so-and-so movie sucked/is overrated" because they're "too cool" to like mainstream movies that other people also like or something lol. Kinda sad.

A film that I haven't seen in this thread is Sin City. You must see that, it's extremely good.

Slumdog was mediocre imo. The ending of it was so cheesy that I almost turned it off.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004).
I didn't think it was that recent, but that movie was absolutely astonishing. The English dub for it is on point as well, I prefer it to the original voices.

Also, Thank you for Smoking (2005). Slipped under the radar for me. Comedy movie with a slightly different kind of humor than the ones suggested. Aaron Eckhart's performance as Nick Naylor is what made me watch The Dark Knight in theaters.

And I second Ratatouille and Wall-E as well. Haven't yet met someone who regretted watching those.

I'm surprised people mentioned 300. I figured that movie was pure hype and would be long forgotten by now.

Gran Torino
The Wrestler (seriously, Gran Torino is tons of times in here but this is nearly inexistent? wtf?)
Sin City
The Departed (or the Hong Kong original, both are great... I could identify myself better with "The Departed" so I liked that one more).
The Green Mile
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (is like Snatch, but imo a little better... Probably depends on which one you saw earlier because they are very similar in many aspects).
In Brugges (starts a bit slow but it just gets better by the minute... Midget wars :D).
City of God
The Dark Knight
No country for old men

REALLY Fun/Strange-Stuff:
Shoot'em'up... Seriously, if you know what you get and you actually want just that (sick action with guns) there is no better movie and there probably will never be a better movie.
Crank 1 (didn't knew anything about this movie and just rented it out of curiosity... Awesome :p).
300 (Hua! Someone should make such a movie featuring amazons )
Oldboy (saw this one accidently on TV with no clue... When a dude is running around with a Hammer you just have to know what he is up to ... That was a really strange experience ^^).
Ong Bak (inyaface!)
Planet Terror (death proof sucked, aside from the cars and Kurt Russel)
Terminator 3... This movie is so... early 90ties... Big explosions, fire... 90ties stuff :p.
Watchmen... Stop complaining about seeing Dr. Manhattens dick, it would have been retarded for his character to wear pants because he is above such things... Seriously, i never knew the comic and i still don't. But complaining about this is just retarded.

I hated V for Vendetta, I was so bored and I just don't see what many people seem to see in this movie.
Transformers was ok, nothing more... I don't really get the hype, to less Robots action... TF2 looks promising
Wolverine is one of the worst movies I saw in a long time.

The Last King of Scotland
City of God (aka Cidade de Deus)
The Green Mile
The Departed
The Bourne Triology
Pan's Labryinth
Taken
The Prestige

American Beauty (ok its 1999, but probably one of my favourite films ever)
Memento
Gladiator (obv)
Sin City
Snatch

and there are soooo many pre-2000 that I would love to name, but they are classics that everyone knows about anyway e.g. shawshank, schindler's list etc

I just watched Across the Universe and it was fantastic. It is a musical with beatles songs set in the vietnam war period, and the songs are strung together just flawlessly. The singing is excellent, although the storyline/script is kinda ridiculous (throwing in a character called prudence just so they could sing hey prudence). Great movie to watch if you're a beatles fan, or you're just into good music/singing and not much of a plot.

What are some movies that came out in 2005?

In no particular order:
No Direction Home
Sin City
Iqbal
C.R.A.Z.Y.
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Batman Begins
Walk the Line
Cindarella Man
Wallace & Gromit
Tsotsi
Corpse Bride
Paradise Now
Sophie Scholl
Murderball

You're telling me there's not a movie in that list that's better than V for Vendetta? An hour and a half of pretentious bullshit.

Religulous

Really shocked that this movie didn't create a ginormous international shitstorm. Basically a very very big slap right across the face of every religious group in the world. Bill Maher does a very good job of asking the right questions and then letting people make complete assholes out of themselves and their religion. I like how it brings up the topic of religion in such a comedic way but then you step back and think about it and you go "holy shit it's actually not funny at all, this is serious business..."
Definitely check it out.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

Although I really didn't like the movie (just a personal taste), no one can deny how brilliantly made the movie was.

Personally, my favorites of the past few years are The Dark Knight, Fearless, District B13, and The Last Samurai.

-No Country for Old men could potentially be an instant classic , but the ending killed it, too much irrelevant symbolism at best and just confusing at worst.
- The Matrix
- Crank
- Children of Men
- The Pianist
- Batman Begins

I can't believe it took 7 page for Bourne to come up. Matt Damon is a great actor and the storyline is so much deeper than other movies in this genre like James Bond.

The prestige is really great and unexpected ending, everyone can love this movie.

And how can people forget Million Dollar Baby? It was really entertaining and the ending almost made me cry. Clint Eastwood+ Morgan Freeman= Insta win

Kill Bill was good too, it's one of those movies you could watch 10 times in a row just because the fights are so epic.

And LOTR is probably the best book adaptation (can I say that?) I've ever seen considering the debth of the story. I'm sure everyone who has read the books had imagine a movie almost just like that, when I saw it for the first time it was really just like I imagined everything before. Gandalf was exactly like he was in the books, so were Aragorn and Legolas.

OP said couple years, why is everyone just posting movies they like? It ruins the purpose.
There clearly wasn't anything that topped Kill Bill since its release, but that was 5 years ago.
Nothing significant came out past 2-3 years, Dark Knight and Slumdog were obviously top picks. I was never a huge fan of "batman" series but wasn't disappointed after watching Dark Knight( obviously thanks to Keith Ledger acting, nothing else). Slumdog was a ripoff from 2 movies, City of God and a french movie My Best Friend( surprisingly good movie too), regardless of that it delivered and kept me interested to the end.
IMO most notable movie in past couple years would be Crank 2. I haven't seen this kind of action since Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. It topped LSATSB at many aspects, probably not the better movie overall but still VERY impressive.
The Pursuit of Happyness deserves mentioning, possibly couple more movies that I'm forgetting about came fairly close. Other then that it's been absolute garbage.
Can someone ban this guy please? FA?

stranger than fiction
ghost town
coraline
the kill bills
casino royale
doubt
benjamin button

some notes:
the dark knight - WAY TOO FUCKING OVERRATED
the prestige - good until that retarded shit happens about 3/4 into it.
v for vendetta - ehh.....
wall-e - did not enjoy it very much...
300 - memorable, but mediocre

The thing with V for Vendetta was that it was very beautifully made. The one scene where V first meets Eevee and says those fifty words that start with V will always be in my memory

The recent wolverine movie was bad imo

Fight Club is always good. The Bourne movies / Boondock Saints if you want action films

Yea I know.

People will always go the original is always better no matter what. If you judge it objectively without the "original is better" bias, then it is obvious The Departed is better.

The Departed is good for those who don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese, otherwise, the "shitty asian film" is definitely better.

Not that the actors were super awesome in the asian version, but the portrayal of the feelings concerning the plot, and the plot overall, is simply better than that of the departed.

since u said couple of years i'll refrain myself from saying some oldies
so i'll start from the 1990 and from the us ( i wont say foreign films )
trainspotting
requieme for a dream
seven
usual suspects
fight club
pulp fiction
reservoir dogs
miller crossing
big lebowski
memento
the prestige
la confidential
the inside man
matrix

if' u'r into animation i'd say spirited away and princess mononoke
now since u cant compare a drama to a comedy because its like asking what do u prefer eating
a good steak or a chocolate cake
so if u'r into funny "drugs film"
any movie with will ferrel
grandma boy
borat
ok the list is too long i'll stop now
and yes i'm aware there were no commas in my awnser
game over dude .... game over!!!!

Yup and I don't consider them anywhere near the same thing... because they aren't.

I also did something called reading so I know the whole other half of the plot the movies didn't go over, I just liked it that much better.

I don't even know how you can really compare them to each other.

Hamlet 2 is very good, and very underrated. One of the strongest movies I saw in 2008.

Tristram Shandy. Also very good, and pretty much unknown.

Steve Coogan is creeping on the come up.

are you kidding? Stalker has some of the best cinematography ever. Some of the sequences in that film are pure amazing, like the tram ride into the zone.

I think the mafia mole in the hongkong version (matt damon's character) had a better portrayal of the conflicting emotions of I-wanna-be-a-good-guy and I-have-to-be-loyal-to-mafia-boss. In The Departed he just shoots jack nicholson so suddenly.

Personally I always like historical/war/ancient era/futuristic movies. Everything that has to do with civilization, so taking that into account... My top 5 isn't exclusively in that genre though. here's my top 5 since 2000

1. Gladiator (2000)
2. V for Vendetta(2005)
3. Black Hawk Down(2001)
4. Children of Men(2006)
5. City of God(2002)

HM:
Slumdog Millionaire(2008)

Also everyone is free of their opinion but I need to counter-vote everyone saying There will be blood.

Easily the movie that bore me out the most in the last 10 year. I didn't even listen to the end of it, I turned off the TV a few mins before the end. I was falling asleep.

is the almost complete lack of foreign films (bare som asian movies which is obvious given TLs userbase) because you guys think they suck or because you just dont watch anything else than hollywood movies? Apart from Vendetta and LOTR movies there are like a ton of foreign movies I cant even remember the name I liked a lot more than all those hollywood blockbusters.

In that regard it still boggles my mind nobody even mentioned "The Sea Inside". Anybody here even seen it? It has like a fuckton of awards (including an Oscar), so it shouldnt even be thaaat underground. Watch that film, its a masterpiece ^^

edit: also "Open your eyes" from the same director is a very very good movie too. Tom Cruise adapted it as "Vanilla Skies" which completely sucked horseshit compared to the original. I was fortunate enough to watch the movie before ever havin heard the story of "Vanilla Skies" so I could enjoy the film without knowing the story. Must suck a little if you watch Vanilla Skies first and Open your Eyes after...

Well, I saw Le Diner de Cons (Dinner Game) And Death at a Funeral which are both funny.
In Bruges is a good one too. But still, Step Brothers is better. -_-;; And most of the movies listed here suck anyways.

Thing is... unless it's a comedy, a movie rarely grasps my attention nowadays.
And a foreign film probably won't be the first to jump into people's heads as the best recent movie they've seen.

Like who the hell names Seven Samurai as the best movie ever? LOLOL nigga plz, you ever see that movie? Your opinion is a joke. Yeah 100 years ago it was fly... but now it's sooo bad. I dare you to watch it without wincing at the movie, they stab each others armpits for god's sake.

I'm pretty sure it's got a lot more to do with the genre then the fact they are foreign movies. As far as I know slumdog millionnaire and city of god have been mentionned a lot here and they're both foreign.

It was boring and simple, I had more fun with the Da Vinci code...

Bourne Ultimatum for the win... really any Bourne movie... all three were incredible

Wait, you don't like V but you are going to say the Bourne series?
They're decent movies... but really?

Yup and I don't consider them anywhere near the same thing... because they aren't.

I also did something called reading so I know the whole other half of the plot the movies didn't go over, I just liked it that much better.

I don't even know how you can really compare them to each other.

I'm comparing them on the basis of being a good movie. I think the Bourne series is far more overrated than V for Vendetta, and is nowhere near as good of a movie.

i really liked slumdog millionaire. And i even watched it with an open mind, in fact, i thought that it would be some richie rich kind of a comedy or something. (i for some reason thought that "slumdog millionaire" means something like a lazy millionaire or something).

It turned out to be a really good movie. It inspiring too. Dreams can be fulfilled, even if you are just some slumdog (the dream was to get the bitch, the gettin' rich part was just a side plan).

Even though the story is very sad. They lost their parents, they lost everything, and the brother of the protagonist is an asshole, and all the fucking shit they go through, its still a very happy movie.

it IS a girly emotions movie though, some guys don't like it i quess.

Also, LOL at saying that movies like zach and miri make a porno or superbad <_>
Those are so fukcing shit.

I quess they are allright when you watch it with proper people, and proper substances (weed, alcohol)

But do any of you think that you will watch superbad again in 10 years?

Watching Sunshine was like reading a Stephen King book. You settle in and things are good. Soon you're reminded that the guy has a knack for developing characters and setting that is hard to find in any genre. By 50 pages in you're hooked. The next 300 pages fly by until it turns out that everyone is a radioactive ghost that needs to drink the blood of still-born babies to stay conscious. And you go "fuck".

mmm just watched Revolutionary Road, gonna have to say it's one of the best movies I've seen in the last couple of years. Seems to be a movie that you either 'get' or you don't, but still DiCaprio's superb performance can't be denied by anyone.

Basically describes every M Night Shyamalan (sp) movie ever; Interesting premise... gets you hooked... then the twist happens and you do the proverbial facepalm.

I'll throw my support behind Gran Torino, Slumdog Millionaire and Pan's Labyrinth for reasonably recent movies that I really enjoyed.

Conversely I've got to say that There Will Be Blood and Stalker (although it's not recent, it's been mentioned in here) were fucking GARBAGE. I don't know how the hell I sat through both of them... they were terrible.
