Slumdog millionaire is also very good. I don't watch a lot of "serious movies", but mainly action or comedy films when I just wanna chill with some friends.

Looking at this thread would be a good idea, Bey ![]() Yes totally agreed... Back to the OP post it depends on the type of movie you like... For instance, do you find "Meet the Spartans" type of movie under the comedy genre funny? Or "Don't mess with the Zohan" funny"? I know people who love one but hate the other. I love both... lol. Another comparison in the "fairy tale" genre is "Harry Potter" series vs LOTR series. Some just hate one but absolutely love the other. So it is good if you have some preference mentioned so it's more likely the recommendation suits you.

Recently watched The Wrestler and the 2 part movie on Mesrine, all good stuff. Also Sex Drive, quite lowbrow but it's amazing to watch how someone can still make a good movie out of a beaten to death genre. But I'm here to dis a few movies. 1. the departed. it is a horrible remake of an awesome film, the actors just didn't deliver. Check out the original, Infernal Affairs from HK, with subs of course, for a better experience. Also check out part 2 of it (not a sequel, it's made with the trilogy in mind), though I don't blame you if you skip the 3rd. 2. Slumdog Millionaire. ok this is actually a pretty good film, it worked on many levels, just not enough to be a great movie, but the fact that this got Best Picture just killed it for me. I have no idea why people are raving after this film. 3. walle. another good film, just very overrated - #41 on imdb? yous gotsta be shitting me

Der Baader-Meinhof komplex About a terrist/idealist group in Germany fighting against the government Watchmen Hero's, who used to live among the people, start to fight back. This movie has a bad ending but it is a great movie to watch if you like the hero/magic powers genre Ip man About a friendly kungfu master who can smack anyones ass like savior used to. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (now in cinema) This film is a prequel about Wolverine and how he got his iron skeleton and lost his memory. I saw it yesterday and its really good. But if you want to see this one right now, you need to watch it in the cinema. But thats just my own taste. As i read the recommendations others gave you i realised that everyone has there own taste. I for one thought that Into the wild was a nice story, but fitted better in a book then a movie. I like my movies fastpaced and into the wild is not, not at all. I've left out comedy movies because any comedy will do in my opinion. Wall-E, Kungfu Panda or other comedies are always fun, but it's a whole other genre. The movies i recommend are harsh, fast paced and are mostly with violence in them. Love it ![]()

And i don't get it how some many people vote Slumdog Millionaire when the things that were well-done (image, setting, the whole growing-up thing) were done better in Cidade de Deus and the things that were different (like the story) weren't really that good...

For example the BSG remake is much, much better than the original and I doubt many people would say otherwise. The Departed is only better for the "I watch and appreciate only/mostly Hollywood films" bunch of people -.- I don't blame you. That being said I enjoyed The Departed too, just not as much (but I knew the original before I watched The Departed, which is probably not the case for many people).

trying to think of some that haven't been mentioned yet... Primer - Low budget indie movie that's just great Seven Pounds - kinda a chick flick, still quite good though Sunshine - I enjoyed it, but i don't know if most would. Sci Fi about some retards that need to refuel the sun Einstien and Eddington - Good story about Einstien and his difficulties getting people to listen to him and ect. Good for science buffs i suppose? Enjoyable RocknRolla - Pretty good, if you like similar movies, you'll like this one.

Pretty much everyone I know loves Wall-E, Pan's Labrynth and The Departed. Nice choices. EDIT: Reading through the thread, I'm also going to second Taken and Dark Knight. I don't know if I'd call any of these MUST-SEE movies though, except maybe Pan's Labryth and Dark Knight. While I love Into The Wild, I think (actually I know, from experience) that it doesn't appeal to a majority of people, but if it's your kind of thing you'll love it. Wall-E was extremely well polished, someone mentioned ratatouille, I guess really if you're into animated films, Pixar produces the best so you should watch all of their stuff.

300. yeah it may have no plot and shitty dialogues. but if you didnt enjoy this your a fag There Will be Blood. i didnt like Magnolia at all, but this is a great movie, daniel day lewis´ character was the deepest ive ever on film also lol at people saying WALL-E. i also think the first Batman movie, Batman begins, was better than the Dark Knight, its ridiculously overrated on imdb, because hearth ledger, an actor who never played in a film worth watching, died of an overdose, which makes everyone think, omg his character must be so deep.

300 was a pretty good movie imo, not particulary realistic but enjoyable. In my oppinion, Watchmen is one of the biggest failures I have yet to lay eyes on but maybe that's just me. Somehow a blue guy (which penis can be seen the whole movie) going emo isn't quite appealing to me. I've seen a lot of people mention The Dark Knight. While it's a good movie, action packed and it's dose of drama and subliminal messages, it's not a movie that rests in one's memory as incredible or amazing. A good action movie, a bit overrated but nothing more imo. Slumdog Millionaire wasn't that good imo, I'd probably rate The Curios Case of Benjamin Buttons to be more interesting and entertaining. Milk, the movie with the gay dude and polithics proved to be quite uninteresting to me so I stopped watching it after 10 minutes, maybe someone with more patience and insight can comment on that one. I recently watched Ip Man, and all I can say is that I just loved it. Loved it, loved it. Has a lot of nice fights and a very interesting storyline that kept me atleast on the edge of my seat. So if you have some spare time on your hands watch Ip Man and The Curios Case of Benjamin Buttons, those are the only movie that actually let an impression on me in the last weeks.

Seriously iron man and batman begins were brilliant movies, they were just overshadowed by dark knight, even though batman begins is just a smidgen worse than the dark knight. And no country for old men was amazing.

And I will second The Assassination of Jesse James, I was stunned by that movie. I think both of these movies are a little under the radar, but amazing. Edit: I don't know what the big deal is with the Dark Knight, 300 is terrible but in a good way (I'd watch either movie again if I were really bored and had a snack), I'd wouldn't watch Wall-E again, I thought it was lousy.

For example, the first time I watched The Departed, people were laughing at the jokes from the beginning to the end and it was great. I watched it again with another group of people and there were hardly any laughs =/ Still, the first time left a very good impression. Anyway from 2005 on: The Departed Juno Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (def. the most fun of any movie) So I don't know if these are the best movies but they left the most memorable impressions. Dark Knight too of course, which everyone loved, but I thought was overrated. Probably like Iron Man more than TDK.

A lot of people have a stupid outlook that because it's a Pixar kids/family movie that it can't be considered really good. But honestly it was incredible how the animators were able to convey such emotion from the characters who had very little facial expression, ie robots without eyebrows or mouths are still able to look surprised or shocked, etc. Maybe I'm wording this poorly but I think most people who've seen it will know what I mean.

![]() Really great kung-fu / action film. It's about the life of Ip Man who is Bruce Lee's initiation master. It's very loosely based off of his life though so don't expect to watch some boring biographical movie. It's primarily an action film with a really interesting story. My only complaint is that it's too short =/ ![]() A great action/gangster film. If you're a fan of Snatch then you will definitely like this. It's not as good as snatch but it was still a really enjoyable film with great story and really funny characters.

When I saw Dark Knight the first time, I was blown away at how good it was. Follow up viewings, it loses some of its punch. I honestly think that Iron Man is more suitable for watching multiple times. Both set an incredibly high standard for future comic book movies though, for which I am grateful. And just for kicks, I'd recommend The Rundown. It's stupid fun, and Christopher Walken is a genius.

I didn't think it was that recent, but that movie was absolutely astonishing. The English dub for it is on point as well, I prefer it to the original voices. Also, Thank you for Smoking (2005). Slipped under the radar for me. Comedy movie with a slightly different kind of humor than the ones suggested. Aaron Eckhart's performance as Nick Naylor is what made me watch The Dark Knight in theaters. And I second Ratatouille and Wall-E as well. Haven't yet met someone who regretted watching those. I'm surprised people mentioned 300. I figured that movie was pure hype and would be long forgotten by now.

The Wrestler (seriously, Gran Torino is tons of times in here but this is nearly inexistent? wtf?) Sin City The Departed (or the Hong Kong original, both are great... I could identify myself better with "The Departed" so I liked that one more). The Green Mile Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (is like Snatch, but imo a little better... Probably depends on which one you saw earlier because they are very similar in many aspects). In Brugges (starts a bit slow but it just gets better by the minute... Midget wars :D). City of God The Dark Knight No country for old men REALLY Fun/Strange-Stuff: Shoot'em'up... Seriously, if you know what you get and you actually want just that (sick action with guns) there is no better movie and there probably will never be a better movie. Crank 1 (didn't knew anything about this movie and just rented it out of curiosity... Awesome :p). 300 (Hua! Someone should make such a movie featuring amazons ![]() Oldboy (saw this one accidently on TV with no clue... When a dude is running around with a Hammer you just have to know what he is up to ![]() Ong Bak (inyaface!) Planet Terror (death proof sucked, aside from the cars and Kurt Russel) Terminator 3... This movie is so... early 90ties... Big explosions, fire... 90ties stuff :p. Watchmen... Stop complaining about seeing Dr. Manhattens dick, it would have been retarded for his character to wear pants because he is above such things... Seriously, i never knew the comic and i still don't. But complaining about this is just retarded. I hated V for Vendetta, I was so bored and I just don't see what many people seem to see in this movie. Transformers was ok, nothing more... I don't really get the hype, to less Robots action... TF2 looks promising ![]() Wolverine is one of the worst movies I saw in a long time.

Really shocked that this movie didn't create a ginormous international shitstorm. Basically a very very big slap right across the face of every religious group in the world. Bill Maher does a very good job of asking the right questions and then letting people make complete assholes out of themselves and their religion. I like how it brings up the topic of religion in such a comedic way but then you step back and think about it and you go "holy shit it's actually not funny at all, this is serious business..." Definitely check it out.

The prestige is really great and unexpected ending, everyone can love this movie. And how can people forget Million Dollar Baby? It was really entertaining and the ending almost made me cry. Clint Eastwood+ Morgan Freeman= Insta win Kill Bill was good too, it's one of those movies you could watch 10 times in a row just because the fights are so epic. And LOTR is probably the best book adaptation (can I say that?) I've ever seen considering the debth of the story. I'm sure everyone who has read the books had imagine a movie almost just like that, when I saw it for the first time it was really just like I imagined everything before. Gandalf was exactly like he was in the books, so were Aragorn and Legolas.

There clearly wasn't anything that topped Kill Bill since its release, but that was 5 years ago. Nothing significant came out past 2-3 years, Dark Knight and Slumdog were obviously top picks. I was never a huge fan of "batman" series but wasn't disappointed after watching Dark Knight( obviously thanks to Keith Ledger acting, nothing else). Slumdog was a ripoff from 2 movies, City of God and a french movie My Best Friend( surprisingly good movie too), regardless of that it delivered and kept me interested to the end. IMO most notable movie in past couple years would be Crank 2. I haven't seen this kind of action since Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. It topped LSATSB at many aspects, probably not the better movie overall but still VERY impressive. The Pursuit of Happyness deserves mentioning, possibly couple more movies that I'm forgetting about came fairly close. Other then that it's been absolute garbage.

I think the mafia mole in the hongkong version (matt damon's character) had a better portrayal of the conflicting emotions of I-wanna-be-a-good-guy and I-have-to-be-loyal-to-mafia-boss. In The Departed he just shoots jack nicholson so suddenly.

1. Gladiator (2000) 2. V for Vendetta(2005) 3. Black Hawk Down(2001) 4. Children of Men(2006) 5. City of God(2002) HM: Slumdog Millionaire(2008) Also everyone is free of their opinion but I need to counter-vote everyone saying There will be blood. Easily the movie that bore me out the most in the last 10 year. I didn't even listen to the end of it, I turned off the TV a few mins before the end. I was falling asleep.

In that regard it still boggles my mind nobody even mentioned "The Sea Inside". Anybody here even seen it? It has like a fuckton of awards (including an Oscar), so it shouldnt even be thaaat underground. Watch that film, its a masterpiece ^^ edit: also "Open your eyes" from the same director is a very very good movie too. Tom Cruise adapted it as "Vanilla Skies" which completely sucked horseshit compared to the original. I was fortunate enough to watch the movie before ever havin heard the story of "Vanilla Skies" so I could enjoy the film without knowing the story. Must suck a little if you watch Vanilla Skies first and Open your Eyes after...

In Bruges is a good one too. But still, Step Brothers is better. -_-;; And most of the movies listed here suck anyways. Thing is... unless it's a comedy, a movie rarely grasps my attention nowadays. And a foreign film probably won't be the first to jump into people's heads as the best recent movie they've seen. Like who the hell names Seven Samurai as the best movie ever? LOLOL nigga plz, you ever see that movie? Your opinion is a joke. Yeah 100 years ago it was fly... but now it's sooo bad. I dare you to watch it without wincing at the movie, they stab each others armpits for god's sake.

As far as I know slumdog millionnaire and city of god have been mentionned a lot here and they're both foreign.

I also did something called reading so I know the whole other half of the plot the movies didn't go over, I just liked it that much better. I don't even know how you can really compare them to each other. I'm comparing them on the basis of being a good movie. I think the Bourne series is far more overrated than V for Vendetta, and is nowhere near as good of a movie.

It turned out to be a really good movie. It inspiring too. Dreams can be fulfilled, even if you are just some slumdog (the dream was to get the bitch, the gettin' rich part was just a side plan). Even though the story is very sad. They lost their parents, they lost everything, and the brother of the protagonist is an asshole, and all the fucking shit they go through, its still a very happy movie. it IS a girly emotions movie though, some guys don't like it i quess. Also, LOL at saying that movies like zach and miri make a porno or superbad <_> Those are so fukcing shit. I quess they are allright when you watch it with proper people, and proper substances (weed, alcohol) But do any of you think that you will watch superbad again in 10 years?

You settle in and things are good. Soon you're reminded that the guy has a knack for developing characters and setting that is hard to find in any genre. By 50 pages in you're hooked. The next 300 pages fly by until it turns out that everyone is a radioactive ghost that needs to drink the blood of still-born babies to stay conscious. And you go "fuck".

Basically describes every M Night Shyamalan (sp) movie ever; Interesting premise... gets you hooked... then the twist happens and you do the proverbial facepalm. I'll throw my support behind Gran Torino, Slumdog Millionaire and Pan's Labyrinth for reasonably recent movies that I really enjoyed. Conversely I've got to say that There Will Be Blood and Stalker (although it's not recent, it's been mentioned in here) were fucking GARBAGE. I don't know how the hell I sat through both of them... they were terrible.
