Short story: I'm at school. And have semester living down. But I will have nothing and no place to live over summer (family poor and in another country). When I say no money I mean I'll have some hundreds. But that's it.
Give me tips on how to survive. Where can I live cheaply? Or more likely squat cheaply? Where can I get showers? Basically how do I survive?
My current plan is find another college campus with summer school going on (people have been kicked out of school for doing it where I am) and hang out in dorms and library.

What about getting a summer job?

Deposit $100 on pokerstars. Learn to beat nl25 before June and survive on that.

Go find a university with a music school Generally the opera department will have showers and nice couches in the green room
|
hostels? most big cities will have one
OR rent a storage unit and sleep in there

It'd be an entry level McD job... and that's certainly something I will do. But that won't give me an apartment. Not even w/ 4 roomates.

Uhh....an entry-level job will definitely allow you to afford a place to live...
I mean come on, even if your post-tax wage is $4.00/hour and you work the standard 40 hours per week, you will make ~$640 a month, which is enough to afford a $2500/month apartment (if you have 4 roomates like you say) plus food and other essentials. That's a pretty nice apartment, even.

Might help to tell us where you are first off so we can better estimate costs and perhaps give some tips if any TLers are in the area. Someone might even be so kind to help you out more directly.
Also, what college and what major are you? What year of college are you? I know times are tough especially concerning finding a job but if you give us more info you might get lucky.
Whatever happens, good luck man.

Your way over exaggerating, but this sounds like it might be an awesome adventure. Big summer school with dorms and library is a pretty good deal, but you can always settle in an alley way with bums they'll teach you their ways, how to survive, pan handling tips and such. Watch Into The Wild for more ideas. Just remember not to eat the poisonous berries, they fuck everything up.

Haha, take a trek into Alaska and never come back eh?
I'd suggest getting a job and looking desperately for roommates. Your idea sounds good too though.

Exactly-_-! Perhaps getting McD jobs and quitting all the time would be fun, but grinding it out for 3mths would be lame.... I am reading liquidpoker now, so that's an option too.... I'll be rich quick... just gotta take out some student loans....

actually i think 40 hours is definitely above standard for these kinds of jobs. i think that in the 30's is standard if you're looking for full time but that might be hard to find, especially for summer jobs. it's because the managers don't want to pay for a single minute of overtime, so they schedule in the 30's to make a nice bubble of space.
but yeah, it's still enough money. he could even decline to have any of his paycheck withheld for taxes, since he might make so little on the year that he's not gonna end up having any income tax anyway.

if there's a beach you can live there. Take your baths in the ocean and make a sand blanket. Even better if you can find like a lil cave thing by the shore. Also if you can play guitar you can just husk for money all day when you're not studying.

No doubt, baby.
Oh yeah, I'm in VA. But greyhounds are cheap. If any campus is especially easy to squat on, the 50$s would be an investment. BTW summer starts late april for me, and ends in aug.

I'm fine now. At school. And I'm really kind of looking for some adventure. Like obviously the best solution is to beg a friend to let me go home with him. But that's awkward and you get 0 stories.
|
go on an adventure and let us know how you did. might get lucky and get a movie deal.

First of all don't go to a homeless shelter. Thats not a good place to be.
There are several options for you. One sure fire way to survive is do day labor and live in a storage bin. Day labor, for those who don't know, is temporary labor. Basically, you show up at this place in the morning, get in line, and hope someone hires you that day. Generally its construction or something similar. You can make $40 or $50 per day doing that, assuming you get work. (look in the phone book for places like Labor Ready)
The storage bin will allow you to keep your things safe and have a place to sleep that is safe. You can get free power by getting a light socket to ac plug converter. It is even possible to run a heater or hot plate, however be careful not to start any fires. Put a fake lock on the outside so when you close up from the inside it looks locked.
A storage bin is somewhat advanced and acquired after significant time on the street. In a pinch, a safe place to sleep is on the roof of various buildings. Most buildings have flat roofs with ladders going up to them. Find one where people can't see top from another building and you won't have to worry about other people or animals.
You can also create a "hooch" if there are some shrubs around. To be successful a machete is needed so you can go deep into the woods (a few hundred feet through thick shrubs is good). If you see beer bottles laying around or trash you haven't gone back far enough.
You will also need to map out where the food banks in your area are. They give homeless people free food. Generally they are at places like Volunteer of America or churches.
Truck stops are generally the best place for showers. You could also try a YMCA.

I like how you cite some movie / book / true story about a naive kid sets out to live by the land and ends up dying.

Have to agree with Straylight here. Yes, you can probably get some pretty cool stories doing outrageous things. But, and I realize I sound like a grandma here, you have to put your personal safety first. Let's face it, you have only the vaguest idea of what you're actually getting into, and I can promise you that whatever it's going to be, you will be exposing yourself to all sorts of shit, ranging from violence to disease, if you aren't living indoors. You won't get any cool stories as a John Doe in some morgue after dying horribly and slowly, all alone, from an infection in a minor scratch. You won't get any cool stories after having been sodomized by sexual predators in the back alley you have wisely settled in. And you most certainly won't get any cool stories from some of the things you might be forced to do in order to survive - not ones that you are willing to share with anyone, at least.
So, safety first. Above all, aim for something that lands you a roof over your head and at least a minimum of personal safety. There's a reason these things are valuable. It's your life - psychically, emotionally and spiritually.
|
hook up with a girl. public utilities such as parks and libraries are great places to meet attractive and nice chicks. use your manly charms on one such vixen and seduce them. after that, ez pz.
but failing that, you should try begging for money and buying things from mcdonald's dollar menu.
|
There was an episode on This American Life about two people who chose to live as homeless people for a year so as to give them more time to work on their poetry. They outlined some good places to go and get food -- such as church soup kitchens, etc. It would be worth listening to, I suppose, you should be able to find it online.
Overall, don't give up looking for work. You can even perhaps do cyber-jobs if needed from public library computers. Also, you can get some good money and living spaces from extended-time medical studies, although that might do you more harm than good in the long term.
I feel sorry for you If you're anywhere near boston perhaps you can stay one night at my dorm, although that doesn't really help either.

VA? go work in poultry farm/chicken slaughter house, then tell us stories about kicking animals before slaughtering them.
|
I don't see what the issue is... I live in VA as well, in a fairly high-dollar area, and I rent a 4 bedroom house for $450/month. I mean, a 2,000 sq ft house only costs about $160,000 here on a half acre of land. Working even 10 hours a week at McDonald's would be able to pay for an apartment with one roommate; two at most.
|
Actually I just remembered a thread that was made by someone on TL who said he had a little bit of cash, but no place to live or anyone to stay with. He ended up playing poker and staying with some friends for a while. Don't remember the thread or keywords in the thread to search for it but if you find it or someone knows what I'm talking about you might want to PM him for ideas. I think he even came back to TL a couple years later and made a thread about building a new computer and someone linked his old thread in there.
God I've wasted so much time reading TL.net. Honestly I know so much useless things about some members on here. Could be worse thou could have been made into a mod.

HOly shit!! I always knew other states were cheaper (I live in California) BUT DAMN $450 for a 4 bedroom house?
Right now I live in a 3 bedroom condo, I'm sharing my room with another guy and I'm paying $440/month

Yeah. I had a job offer to work at Blizzard's office in Irvine, and I turned it down due to the insanely high cost of living. Jobs paid the same, but everything seemed to cost about twice as much. I feel bad for anyone living in Cali.
|
Yeah, that same house would probably cost like 4x as much here in Silicon Valley.. even with the foreclosures lol!
|
Don't feel bad for us living in California. It's awesome here. Rent sucks, but it's a small price to pay.

hopefully you have some friends, or some way to get loans, and hope to pay them back later.

Hahaha that's what I though. Most apartments here are $600/mo, don't complain too much about other states. LOL @ Irvine, $2500/mo for single bedroom apartment.

Did the OP even tell us where he lives yet?

Cali has some ridiculous living requirements that I feel are going to HAVE to come down with the way the economy and the housing market is going.
Currently costs me 550 for a 2 bedroom apartment and I live on my own.

Which is why I would strongly advice against it in this case. Couchsurfing and Hospitalityclub are places of travel and cultural exchange. They are not for freeriding a place to sleep just because you are to cheap to pay for a room.
|
A lot of fraternities/sororities rent out rooms for reallllly cheap over the summer, you could check into that. If not, post a notice on a community board or in your school newspaper. A lot of people rent houses/apartments year round but go home for the summer, and are willing to rent out their place cheap just to help with rent while they are gone.
A far as showers, try a local swimming pool. Usually admission is just a couple bucks or they will let you shower for free. Even better, most schools have at least one gym and locker room with showers accessible to students for free.
If you're looking for cheap ways to eat, go with canned or boxed foods like Zatarains. A box of their black beans and rice, for example, only costs a little above a dollar at Winco, rice and beans together make a complete protein which will keep you full and give you energy, and you can get a couple meals out of each box. Surprisingly enough, canned things like spagghettios are pretty good for you too, and only cost about 80 cents per can. Eggs are an almost perfect protein, and you can get a dozen for a little over a dollar. Throw some cheap cheese in there and you've got yummy scrambled eggs. Shop at places like Winco and grocery outlet instead of Safeway or eating out...and avoid foods like ramen that seem to fill you up but have no nutritional value. Don't forget to eat fruits and vegetables, too...or you'll get scurvy or something. Just buy the ones that are in season and on sale. If you want some living on a budget recipe ideas...hit me up. I am an experienced starving college student lol.

Heh, too bad you're not living here, all student dorms/studios/appartments are rent free June-July but most people go home for the summer anyway.
First thought in my head too was couch surfing, and I don't agree that you can't use it for something like this. I don't know how much things cost there, or how much money you'll actually have, but if you can't get enough money to rent your own place (some cheap room summer only as some people already mentioned) couchsurfing can really help. And it is very legit...
God I hate being a poor student >_<

That homeless blog is quite amazing. Practical advice along with a few philosophical insights on society and homelessness. I think if we all read it we'd all be a bit more empathetic to the homeless people we see in our lives.

Depending on your major there are quite a few research type jobs at universities that will offer room and board over the summer so you could try and look into one of those. Also you could consider working at a overnight camp as you would get paid and have a place to stay over the summer.
|
Would it be possible for you to get a job now till the summer? Then you'd have some cash and maybe you could rent a spot for a month or two and maybe work somewhere else for cash.

Hey, I think I remember you go to school in west philly? If I remember correctly, there are a lot of summer sublets for $300ish, and that's definitely affordable if you grab a low-paying summer job... Maybe if you pick up a research position that'd be even easier?

Here's an easy solution:
Get a job now. Buy a car with a down payment from the money you make in these next two months. Try to find one with a place you could easily sleep (like a sedan with a back seat that connects to the trunk or something.) Live in the car. Sleep in it, using sheets and everything. It's a good thing you're doing this in the summer because this strategy doesn't always work in the winter time. Drive to the YMCA every morning to shower/get ready for work.
You're not mooching off of anyone and your conscience is clear. This is actually what I plan to do after college to pay off my student loans.

LOL Month and a half to: Find job + Downpayment + Insurance + Food for 2 months of summer? What kinda retarded option is that?
Clearly minimum wage job with 25 hours a week should be the best option. Minimum wage jobs are also easy as fuck and stress free. The prices people been saying are cheap as fuck compared to shit in my poor ass Canadian city.

Why don't you ask your parents for a plane ticket back home for the summer like normal college students ...? I can't believe there's so much advice for him to be a hobo.

Maybe the place he has to go back to is worse than wandering in the streets without money.

Just ask to stay with a friend and earn your stay by working around the house. Otherwise you posting this kind of shit is just pity whoring.
You have friends right?

buy a big van that has payments per month of $150. find a nice neighborhood to park it, pad the inside storage with pillows and sleep there at night. be careful, it might get cold even during summer.
shower at: college, fitness center, opera place at college, recreation center (these are cheap to get membership at)
food: this is a tough one, cause you wont have somewhere to cook stuff... and buying stuff is expensive.

Or you didn't read/comprehend the very first paragraph. Either way it made me rage.
Well I'm glad you decided to make an account just to troll my suggestion that parents should be the first person he turns to. Just because someone's family is poor doesn't mean they have no ability to help. The guy didn't just walk to the states?

Dammit Hot-Bid, you posting God. I just wasted 3 hours reading everything on that site and exploring the links and related topics...really awesome though, thank you.

Wohmfg suggesting that someone's parents help them out in a difficult financial time is not an odd suggestion at all, and I have no idea why it would cause you to "rage". The OP didn't give that many details of why his parents couldn't help, just that he couldn't fly over to them.

I've liked NonY's suggestion best so far. It feels like the safest option. Find a TL.netter to help you out.

Some of that sounds like me maybe, but you seem to have it all mixed up. Anyways yea, I never was actually 100% homeless. Thread titles is rough waters~ http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=60457
from about oct-nov last year I was actually locking up at work and just using the comp there until like midnight or whatever and crashing at my gf's place. Then I moved in with my friend which is cool, but now I'm always fucking broke. I need a second job or need to follow that homeless guide which is pretty fucking awesome from what i've read so far.
It's kind of ironic, My life was happier and less stressful when I didn't have this place and all the extra money. It's like I want to have a stable place to live and all but on the other hand it feels like I'm wasting money that could have been saved/spent for other important things.
You know that feeling where you paid for something then feel like an idiot cause you could have just walked out and no one would have cared/noticed. It's like that.
PPS- I just wanted to add that craigslist and ebay are very good for selling stuff for cash and buying shit cheap.
I also read about this azn guy (maybe it was a gameshow?) where he had to only live off contests and shit. They locked him in a room and gave him magazines or something. He had to sell and win contests and make a certain amount of money to win. It was pretty crazy.
Also there is another story about a guy who started with a red paperclip and traded and bartered it over an over until he eventually got a house out of it.
Google those.

If you are looking for a place for a couple of nights you could find a couch on couchsurfing.com. If you would like to spend a longer time in one place go to http://hostandcare.com which is a community that connects students and travellers looking for free accomodations with families and seniors looking for care. You get free room and board in exchange for few hours a week of helping out. You could do tutoring, child care, senior care, home care, etc.

What was that other topic about a guy being stuck in some country? He came back okay but it was pretty epic

Not sure I like the idea of helping someone who isn't willing to help themself. That's just a plague of this world, its the same reason I don't give people a quarter to people in their change cup, it won't solve the problem as a whole. Be more responsible and get a job at fast food or something, get caught up, get a place to live and move on. Lastly I would plead not to take advantage of any resource like was mentioned for couchsurfing because that's just exploiting good natured people.

i agree. people arent born into problems, or then never come from circumstance. people who have problems are people who just dont wanna pull their socks up, buckle down, and fix them. people need to work harder.

Or how about just renting a room...?
From 200-400/month

Learn to breakdance. I went on a 3 month road trip when I was 17 and found out very quickly that you can definately pull in money for food/weed by breakdancing for a couple hours.
Thank you very much mr.roboto ...
Also the stories can be priceless. Unless you suck.
