Hey!
I'm going to buy a new router, because starcraft doesnt work with the one I got now, a zyxel. I've had this problem for quite a while now and got really tired of it, and I've tried everything to make it work. I can't create games or play in a game with more than 2 players. So I'm buying a new router.
I was thinking of Netgear DG834 and I'm wondering if anyone here got one of those and can tell me if it works fine with starcraft or not.

Have you looked in the port forwarding guide thing? If its there, chances are it will work well with sc
|
I have the Netgear DG834GT and using the advice from PortForward.com I was easily able to host games etc. Good luck~
|
my netgear router had a problem with overheating, making my network unconnectable, let alone the internet
avoid them imo
|
i have dg834 , havent been able to get it to work will try portforward.com , thx for link
|
Yes, I have tried port forwarding, didn't help.
PobTheCad, please let me know if it works.

If you decide that you like a router, any router, I suggest you google "[routername] problems" before actually buying it to see what ppl are complaining about and if said problems are solvable and if you are able to live with them if they aren't. That being said, I was considering buying that very router you mentioned in OP before my ISP sent me new hardware, it looked good to me at the time.

lol i have some netgear router, but since the ISP didn't give me the username/password for the actual router i can't even access the port forwarding section
|
|
Using the DG834G since 2-3 years ago, and been online 24/7 ever since. Can host games, etc. Works flawlessly. Just forward ports for sc.

Download the manual for your router (google for the manual or google "default username for [router]" or something like that) and the default username/password should be in there. Usually it is something like user//user or admin//admin for mine the admin account was admin//qwerty.

I use a netgear and with port forwarding worked great for me. I also used an older version about 5 years ago and never had issues with it either. Hope this helps man.

Agreed. Netgear is terrible. Go with Linksys or D-link or something.
|
WELL I HAVE A FUCKING LINKSYS WIRELESS BRIDGE AND WHEN SOMEONE TURNS THE MICROWAVE ON, I LAG HORRIBLY, THE WORST LAG YOU WILL EVER IMAGINE, BEAT THAT.
|
Belkin wireless usually works fine, and if you have problems with them blocking or lag you can often solve it by port forwarding or by DMZ.
edit: wrong name lol, I've used too many routers.
|
I was actually looking at routers last month and this particular Netgear router even offers a fix for StarCraft LAN play on bnet:
NETGEAR WNDR3300
Firmware 1.0.23 "Fixed - Two LAN PCs can't play online game Starcraft."
This is not to be confused with the WPN824 which only has a fix on the Korean firmware.
|
I use a Linksys WRT160N and it's been good for the past year or so
|
Newer Netgear routers have a port forward preset called "Starcraft", but I've never actually used it.
Everyone hates on Linksys, but their newest WRT54-G v.8x routers have ditched the shitty Vx firmware and switched to Linux (easy install for 3rd party firmward, eg, dd-wrt micro) and beefed up the processor. Throw "dd-wrt micro" firmware on there, and just configure the Starcraft ports' forwarding (6110-6114 or smthg?) and dd-wrt is great for other shit too, like setting the highest priority for network packets destined for your IP (fuck your roommates).

I have issues right now despite the server im on. Im using wireless with a netgear dual-n band and I get a lag pop up every few minutes and cant figure out what to bother trying to get it fixed.
|
i have netgear wgt624v4, i can host + i can have multiple computers in the same game on one ip address and it never crashes, great router

go into router settings and change the channel like if your on channel 1 goto 11
basically the microwave usually emits around 2.4ghz? frequency which is what your router is most likely outputting so change it.. and you wont have the problem anymore.
and actually this will help a lot of people if everyone does it
because if your using wireless and everyone in your neighbor hood is around the same channel simply putting it on the opposite end of the spectrum will give dramatic results... my wireless kept cutting out until I went from 1 to 11 and now everythings perfect.
|
Get a Linksys. The WRT54G is my favorite router. I have had it for like 3 years, and there have been no problems whatsoever.

The 802.11b-g standard(s) operates on 2.4 gHz, with 84 Hz headroom. Microwave ovens emit waves on this frequency too, so do some cordless phones and some other things. You change the frequency by changing the channel. Try changing to channel 1 or 6, as these (and # 11)are the only chans who do not overlap.
Here are some specifics:

The router I'm using right now got a built in modem so can't do that.
Anyway, my ISP is gonna send a new router but it was my dad who talked to them so I have no idea what router it is. I can just hope it's gonna work.

If Port-Forwarding does not work for you, set yourself as DMZ and and can do whatever you want online as if there was no router. This also removes security provided by the router, but well..

Sounds abit risky but right now I can't even get into the router, don't know why, so can't try it.

do this ipconfig /all
find out your router's ip address which is the default lan ip.
try admin / admin for pw and user

Yeah, I know how to do it, but I just can't connect to the router, nothing happens when I try.

It's weird you can't play in large games. I was under the impression port forwarding only helps when you are hosting games. Is your ISP fine (like is browsing the internet fine?)?

Yes, everything works great except BW.

Actually, the router IP is displayed under Default Gateway.

You mean the modem has a built in router. So they are sending a whole new modem/router and hope that the new model fixes the issues?
Good luck. If I was you I would have them send a plain old modem and you can worry about routing it yourself. Bundled shit always sucks.

I just have a basic DLink piece of shit and I can play fine, lag free, but I can't host.

call your ISP, they will give you the UN/PW

just a little advice for portforwarding, sometimes the port doesn't forward right away, you have to restart the router for settings to apply.
