I have a very hard time calming myself down. I always have to constantly be thinking about something, doing something, or just something something something. The calm state of mind is so ever elusive. When I need a break from starcraft, I don't just take a break, I have to download or upload or compress convert or do some background task just so that I'm not wasting my time being away from my computer. I go take a nap or something to calm me down, but I am never quite calm down when I can just sit and stare at my computer for like 1 minute before doing something. How do you guys get into a calm, submissive state of mind/being?

I smoke a cigarette sometimes.

Also, I breathe in with my mouth slowly for ten seconds, then breathe out slowly for ten seconds (with my mouth yet again). It helps slow your heart down, therefore calming you down. Try it out.

I'm always in a super calm content state and if I seem angry or like I'm bitching about something it's all just an act trying to convey some fake emotions. That is unless I'm drunk and someone tries to rip me off then ANGER.

I don't think your question can be solved unless with drugs. Everyones different and some people just can't chill the fuck out for some reason. There are plenty of temporary fixes but that anxiety will always creep back up on some people.

edit: actually I lied sometimes I go into a sick state of tilt when I'm waiting around for something that I feel I shouldn't have to be waiting for. Wow that erks the shit out of me

but in general yeah I think a very healthy lifestyle is the only natural fix

anything else we should know about?
why so 진지해?

same way for me, the only time I'm loud is when I'm being an asshole or putting on an act of being pissed off

come to think of it everyone probably thinks I get really angry, but I guess it would be really weird if I just appeared apathetic to everything

Hmm I don't ever have to do this, I'm generally pretty calm. One of the few things that makes me angry is loosing consecutive BW games due to stupid mistakes and the way I rectify it is playing till I win.

I am usually very calm.

Even if I get angry then I must have a really really good reason to do so. So I'm not afraid to express my emotion.

Well doing something that physically tires you works well, but if you're trying to calm down before playing a game of bw that's not really going to work.

The secret to staying clam is to not care so much.

from a reply in another post, I wrote this ..

On November 22 2008 14:19 Physician wrote:
I have never actually been depressed for which I am very thankful. The closest thing that comes to it, is feeling between uneasiness and being pissed off - when I can't quite identify what triggered it (when I can, I try to deal with problem and it usually improves the mood). When that happens if I can't find a reason to explain the mood, I listen to tangram and mellow out usually under 8 minutes.. And because I've have done it so often since I was young, if I can't listen to it for whatever reason, I will close my eyes, and replay it in my mind - it works almost like a reflex and I usually manage to settle my emotions into a pleasant neutral.

- it works for me, basically you condition a yourself to a mood state, using a piece of music as trigger.

I'm gonna be a bit long on this post as I've been there before:

To me it seems u spend too much time in the past/future. U are constantly analazing things which happened before or projecting things in the future. This is natural (and advisable IMO) for academic requirements, but it isn't healthy at all for ur daily life. I bet if someone watches you doing trivial things (cooking, chilling with friends, etc) they can see on ur face that u are wrestling with ur toughts.

It used to happen to me at it really drains ur mental energy/focus. U'll be better for everything (at least in some degree) and feel overall happier if u fix this. To do so there are many ways and they work different for everyone, so try them all. Trust me, this is like the best thing u can do.

Possible solutions:

-Change ur attitude towards life. Assume u are the best person u know and therefore don't need to worry about shit unless it interests URSELF. Easier said than done , but this is the most important thing i've ever heard off lol.
-Don't try to not "think". Instead try changing ur focus, or better, GO OUT AND DO SOMETHING. By changing or focus I mean instead of worrying on something negative/upcoming event/old event, think on something u want to do NOW and how to do it. Even better, GO AND DO IT.
-Drugs (I have used alcohol only btw ) help depressing useless thoughts. Just start with a moderate "dosis" and lower it gradually till u no longer need it.
-DO SPORTS THAT REQUIRE FULL FOCUS. Contact sports/WEIGHTLIFTING*.
-Try doing meditation.

You are consiously aware of ur problem, so fix it. Don't think on crap u don't need or care.

*Learn to do full body exercies such as presses, squats and deadlifts. Not wussy curls with dumbbells.

im one of those guys that is indifferent to pretty much everything. I dont need calming down, as there is nothing that uncalms me

Realize that life will unfold as it does and there's not much you can do to stop it as you are only an individual...this will either make you very angry with the world or you will realize there is nothing to get upset over

Good post, basically how I feel. Getting angry usually accomplishes nothing and just makes you feel worse.

If I were you I'd seriously consider trying the weed, that is if you haven't tried it yet.
Giving it a try isn't unhealthy, and if you were to like it you could get a vaporiser for long term healthy smoking pleasure

I know it sounds silly, but counting to 10 really helps... for immediate calming.

Also, if you start exercising regularly, it changes your state of mind and makes you happier/calmer.

how can some people conclude that he needs to start taking drugs after reading a 4 line post? some people have really shitty advices lol, OP I hope you don't listen to them when you can actually just try and close your eyes breathing deeply for 10 seconds...

and to the OP, I don't see what's the problem with your situation. you always need to do something and have difficulty calming down...where's the problem? as long as it doesn't keep you from sleeping, doing something every moment is actually an advantage in life, if you manage to do something useful in those times. i'm personnally very lazy and I would love to be able to actually DO something instead of browsing TL for 5 hours.

Honestly, I have a problem punching things. I got trapped by an SUV yesterday into the guardrails, and my mom gave me a lecture about defensive driving. I was mad and punched the car. The pain in my knuckles ensures me I won't do it again for a while. It's a vicious cycle.

I often find myself gazing into the mirror, stunned by my good looks. Then I go smoke a cigarette to let the impression settle, until I go into a state of mind where i reflect the experience. At that point I mostly achieve calmness.

I get that thinking too much feeling sometimes. Getting a good girl, cliche as it sounds, really does help. As others have said, working out/sports help a great deal as well. You could even try setting goals to yourself to help you focus.

and to all the weed responses, don't take those seriously. At least for me weed would sometimes do just the opposite and I would begin to think even harder about whatever was bothering me, often coming to conclusions that would make me anxious..

Conclusion: do your best to stay active socially and physically.

Could you explain to me why you would like to be calm? I'm the opposite, can't really get excited. Seems to me like it is better to have an intrinsic motivation to be constantly doing something.

sit or lay down comfortably and close your eyes. breath in and out slowly and imagine your left hand, left arm, right hand, right arm, left foot, left leg, right foot, right leg and finally your whole body to sink down and feel heavy. Repeat every body part 3 times until you move on to the next. You can listen to some ambient music in the background but personally I prefer silence or natural noises like the wind. Will take 5 to 10 minutes and it really works.

Sounds like something you'll probably get out of soon. As a temporary solution, try this chain...

Run/exercise to induce plenty of sweating -> shower -> masturbate -> smoke a cigarette -> lie down on your bed -> read something you might be interested in. When the feeling of uneasiness comes back, try to figure out what's causing it.

Are you stressed out for some reason?

Have a healthy diet and try sleeping at regular times might help a bit. Massages also do wonders

I think of everything logically and try to admit what I did wrong

I also try and raise my self esteem by telling me what I did right.

This is such a complex question that it is foolish to answer like most people here did.

It obviously depends on the details of the OPs life, from current problems, to stuff that are already deeply in the core of his identity.

Some things like listening to music might help you in the short term, but it's obvious that it's just covering up the problem that's bothering you, consciously or subconsciously.

but in general yeah I think a very healthy lifestyle is the only natural fix

This guy knows what he's talking about.

Working out and having a decent healthy lifestyle, helps a lot to keep your cool almost all the time. Everybody have it's days and stuff, but doing stuff, running, cardio w/e you want it to be is excellent for your overall health and specially mental one.

When you exercise, you burn a lot of toxins (?) that stay on your body until you sweat them out (or pee them ;P), if the amount of these is too high, you're more likely to be hyperactive and stuff.

So yes, work the fuck out .

read a book or listen to music, you'll just get in a slow paced rut if you get high or watch TV.

I find drinking a nice cup of tea with a decent amount of milk helps calm me down and focus a lot .

Sit down in a dark room and take deep breaths for 10 min while focusing on only one thing, like the humming of your computer. Do this once a day and you should feel better. I'm positive most people have heard of this technique but have never actually tried it. I didn't believe it worked until I tried it one day and it calmed me down quite a bit.

I go take a nap or something to calm me down, but I am never quite calm down when I can just sit and stare at my computer for like 1 minute before doing something. How do you guys get into a calm, submissive state of mind/being?

methinks you have adhd, check with your psychiatrist.

or stop taking ecstasy.

Yeah, I was going to say that sounds like ADHD, especially since I have the same problem (I have ADHD too). Try reading a good book. I just finished Ender's Game, and now I'm reading this collection of over 100 short stories by Ray Bradbury. Whenever I'm feeling antsy, just reading one or two of those short stories helps a lot.

Seriously though, Racenilatr, there are 3 solutions:

1. Ware yourself out by getting a punching bag and smacking the shit out of it. Or, you could work out until you have no strength left. If you can't tranquilize your anger, feed it until it is sated.

2. Practice Buddhism. I'm not saying you should convert but going to some Buddhist classes and learning to utilize incense and meditate would prove very helpful.

3. Porn. Either watch some relaxing lezie scenes and solos or watch the hardcore stuff to take your anger out. There are some really nice sites out there from which you can stream porn and also have videos listed by categories. Pick your favorite and begin the calming process.

I normally would laugh at this, but not after I just finished reading "Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs."

Start Skateboarding man no joke.
I been skating for like 10 years now, everytime I get pissed off I swear to god I hop in my car and sesh at my local park. Skating calms me down so much. After you start skating long enough you can do tricks without really focusing on them its hard to explain but like I guess because if you repeat something enough it comes second nature or w/e. Learn to skateboard/ Spend some time learning a couple basic tricks...ollie/ Kickflip/Pop-Shovit/ half-cabs then when you get pissed or anxiety attack or w/e go sesh. Dont knock it til you try it~!

Yeah that works wonders, specially when youre with other people, really shows whos the boss, best to be insured though! broken bones are kinda common!

For me, i usually, first get away from whatever is pissing me off, then instead of trying not to think about it, or going all childlish and spewing all my anger into whatevers near me; i think about how stupid and ridiculous and useless is being pissed about whatever. Then it just goes away after a while and i can assess the same situation calmly.

Try seeing a psycologist before trying out any drugs of your own. Punching walls, hitting animals, etc. may be not as serious but its definitely on the same road as drinking, doing drugs, whatever.

I go to the guy that is pissing me off, and punch him in the face, but sometimes I tell myself, dude, do not do it man, do not just get up while your class is in the middle of a movie and punch the guy that is talking in the face out of nowhere.
EDIT1: No bullshit, I actually did that once, the guy didn't fight back though : \
But yeah, as others have said so before me, I try to not take things too seriously.

I often feel similarly to the OP.

I find that turning off all possible distractions (computer off, lights off, music off) and exercising for a while calms me down and also makes me feel better about myself.

Don't do drugs lol

Take a long shower and just stand in the water, listen to calming slow music, watch some relaxing shows? Go outside and take a stroll someplace tranquil, that works wonders too.
