Hey people applying to college, first off sucks to be you. Second of all, I believe that you are trying to figure out what schools to apply to. Well look no further, as I am starting a thread for college students/alumni to either plug or hate on the school they went to/applied to/transferred out of.
Hey people who are in/have been in college, first off sucks to be you. Second of all if you want to have more tl people in your school, plug your school or hate on a previous school in this thread.
I'll start with my school, the University of Chicago.
Reasons why you should go here: 1) Nobody uses the gym and the gym is really nice. We actually have two gyms. 2) The food here is quite good compared to other campuses. Trust me, I can compare. 3) This school is really fucking good academically. We're not Harvard good, but we're Columbia good and Duke good (according to US News and World Report... lol) 4) This school has the top Economics program in the country and probably the world. I'm not kidding here. Steven Levitt, Milton Friedman (though he dead), all part of this school. 5) We have a Starcraft club and tbh some of the people aren't very good but some of them are on my level so ^^ 6) Like Asian girls? We have a ridiculous amount of attractive asian girls (other girls not so much). However, most of them are dragon ladies and super super competitive premeds. So if you're going premed, watch out! 7) We have fucking nice dorms. The dorm I'm living in is a former hotel although it will close in the next year, but there are plenty of suites/private bathroom suites, etc. 8) We're common app next year so that should apply to your sense of apath. 9) Enjoy studying? Good news! The average student spends 30 hours a week studying. We have many big libraries though including a new one opening next year. 10) We're in Chicago. It's like New York but quieter and with less entertaining panhandlers. Although drugs are really easy to get... lol.
Reasons you shouldn't go here: The drinking/parties/frats are terrible. Although if you are a substance free that should be a plus. Did I mention you have to study? It's "where fun goes to die"... ahehehehe. Chicago is fucking cold in the winter. Although we are safe from hurricanes.

Emory University
Why you should come!
1) Before you ask "what the hell is that?" its a great private school in Georgia, that is number 18th on the USnews rankings this year. It's highly selective.Look into it =) 2) We have slightly more girls than guys =D 3) If you like frats, about 30% or 1/3 of the people are into greek life, however this does not mean you have to be part of that to have fun, I'm not and I enjoy myself in other ways 4) We're pretty solid, prelaw premed and business, the major three careers that a lot of people consider 5) Our business school is top five for undergrad business ranked by businessweek (although I believe this may be somewhat overrated, our bschool is still solid) 6) Common app, makes it easy to apply here. 7) We're pretty much next to Atlanta, and the area around here is pretty nice 6) Many asians, if you like that. Mostly korean though. 7) our upper classman dorms are like a country club, some new freshmen dorms were built this year, I'm living in them and its great 8) A lot of jewish people, so if you're jewish there's always something for you to do. 9) Lots of club parties and frat parties if you're into that stuff 10) People are friendly, I've seen very very few people who come off as arrogant or mean or something 11) Food is pretty good. Sorta gets tiring after a while, but that's just like food at any place. 12) Private school, so smaller classes (except in intro classes like chem 141) 13) Our library is somewhere in the top 20 (i think?) according to the princeton review rankings. It's pretty nice and I like it. 14) Lots of clubs, activities, events, free food, and free shuttles to places like Lenox, GaTech, and other malls and stuff. 15) Nice warm southern weather! 16) Emory is rich because of Coca Cola. If you like coke, come! There's construction all the time, which means the school has money to spend on new things.
Why You Should Not Come! 1) It feels like you HAVE to attend parties to meet people, which is somewhat true, but not really. 2) Sorta clique-y 3) Our gym is pretty good, but sorta old. Just wish it was better. There's enough weights, tracks, fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, pools, ect for everyone though. The place just look slightly old. 4) Private school, so you may need some money. However, the financial aid is pretty nice to very low income families. And there's other things to help out with loans and stuff. 5) No football team, but I don't like football so its a plus for me >_>

We don't suck, but maybe slumping a bit. Class of '08 was the first class without a final four under coach K, and preseason chances aren't great for my class of '09.

The Evergreen State College:
Why you should go here: Plan your own curriculum, no grad req's other than 180 credits (some must be in science to get a BS) Build your own major ie starcraft without living in someone's attic Individual: build your own course and get credit for it! I met someone this week who did one about polyamoury, he actually went out and had sex with a bunch of people and wrote about it for credit It's as cheep as free! Grad schools love it did i mention NO GRADES!
bad things If you can't get your shit together you may end up going here for the rest of your life

MIT: 1) very few people here have AIDS 2)
|
wow so many MIT here. I thought whatisprotoss was the only one..
anyway i got to RIT and it sucks up here.
Cons: - Poor diversity - Female population is low. Most of them majors art or bio. - Low asian population. Not to mention asian females.. (I'm asian) - Many weirdos/geeks especially in my major. (CS) - Grade is only A B C.. etc.. no A + -. It's either high or die. - We only have days off only for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The break schedule is totally different from all colleges in US. - Winter is a fucking bitch here. - No shit to do up here (I'm from nyc)
Pros - Required Co-op. (land me to co-op for IBM for 6 month. YES!) - Have decent numbers of clubs, activities, intramural (My intramural basketball team is kicking ass)
Overall: Don't come.. I will die regretting if I didnt co-op for IBM.

But MIT pays for ESPN 360, so life isn't completely over. Plus the bandwidth/connection at this place is awesome, so you can actually use ESPN 360 and have it be worthwhile. And the wireless everywhere... but I think a lot of schools have that. More good reasons: Check stats on % admission to grad school med school and the like Check stats on starting salary
Bad reasons: Food - dining halls serve 5 meals a week (wtf?)

MIT is catered by the same company that caters for Duke, I believe...Bon Appetit managing company. They actually do a pretty good job, I'd say.

To add to this (I also go to RIT in my last two quarters of BS/MS I cannot wait to be done this place sucks balls) pros -There are several schools not to far from RIT with high female populations (although they are relatively smalls schools) that you seem to get an auto in with once they know you go to RIT manly cause we are in general much smarter than the guys who go to there school...although most RIT students lack social skills so this in is usually wasted lol... -Fairly well known in the northeast -Many professors actually have practical experience. This is actually a huge plus I find as when you go on a co-op you have a much better idea what to expect than from professors who have only academic skills/experience -good gym facilities
Cons -If you aren't going to have a car it will be very difficult to go anywhere (fairly awful public transportation) -essentially no school spirt -no football team (although we do have a rather good hockey team) -Everything is made of brick/campus is ugly -no sense of community

6) Like Asian girls? We have a ridiculous amount of attractive asian girls (other girls not so much). However, most of them are dragon ladies and super super competitive premeds. So if you're going premed, watch out!

I was planning on attending but then they were a big bitch to international students so I decided not to go
Hmm, why go to St. John's, good question.
1. It's in a decent neighborhood. 2. All the facilities are being refurnished, they're completely reworking the athletic building and adding in like three new basketball courts. 3. Parties are somehow connected to NYU's? I'm not a party-goer, don't know, don't care. 4. Teachers are really laid back. 5. Workload is never too much unless you're in the pharmacy program. 6. Apparently our school is good at sports? ROFL I don't even know
Why you should never ever go to SJU.
1. If you live nearby and have bitchy parents, don't go. Also applies to every other college. 2. You basically fuck yourself unless you take the doctor of pharmacy program, since everything else is "meh" and pharmacy is the only half-decent thing there. 3. Girls are ... . You come across a lot of international students that are but overall is very, very

Can get to any class within 5 minutes. 10. Will occasionally see KOBE BRYANT at the gym. (Plenty of people have taken pictures with him.) 11. Asian heaven. 12. Beaches are close.
Cons: Cops are very anal here: will give you ticket for J-Walking at 3 in the morning. (no joke)

My plug for:
Harvey Mudd College:
Pros:
1. Academics are extremely good (on par with Caltech or MIT), esp. for math, CS and engineering 2. Small school (732 people this year) 3. Part of the 5 Claremont Colleges (5 C's) for a larger community 4. Relatively nerdy, but there is a wide variety of ppl 5. Excellent parties and easily accessible alcohol if you want it 6. Good food, you can eat at any of the 5 C's 7. No graduate students, so undergrad research is involved and you can work with profs 8. Special relativity is widely joked about (first semester freshman year fizx is reletivity + quantum mechanics) and Gamma is now profanity 9. Starcraft is widely appreciated and played on a regular basis. Tasteless is broadcast every week in one of the lecture halls. Day[9] went here and graduated in '08.
I can't think of any big cons right now. Mind I'm still in my first semester so my perspective is limited.

Academy of Art University
Pros -Campuses all around San Francisco, with free shuttles going everywhere so if you like the city you'll like this place. -Most people are pretty chilled out and not very competitive (at least in my experience). -Easy to get into. -Screen free movies every so often. -A lot of equipment you can rent for free if you're in the appropriate class. -Awesome film program (what I'm in) and from what I've heard (although my sources are obviously biased) the best game development school in the country. -Since this seems to be a pro for a couple of others, a lot of asians...although I don't think they're in the film programs since despite seeing a crapload of them around the campuses I rarely see any in my classes...
(I live off-campus so I don't actually know too much outside of classes)
Cons -Supposedly it's hard to graduate since instead of just collecting credits, you have to display your portfolio or demo reel or whatever the hell it is actors might show, in front of a panel of professors who judge if you can graduate. -Our mascot is the Urban Knight, fucking lamest mascot ever

UT Austin 5th year here~ Austin is a great city for students/young professionals; vibrant nightlife, major live music city (live music capital OF THE WORLD?), lots of local and major businesses around. Music isn't the only artsy/trendy thing going on here; film making is a pretty big thing in Austin as well. UT itself is a strong school, highly rated, lots of top notch faculty depending on what department you end up in. Business is one of the stronger programs here, as well as engineering. Other depts are good too. Really you can study pretty much whatever you want here. Of course we have strong athletics programs as well, so if you like cheering for good teams, UT is the place to be in TX.
Campus life is pretty good- Austin is, as mentioned, a great city to be "stuck" in the middle of, and there's always stuff happening on or near campus. UT is known as a party school, so if you're into that kind of thing there's always a party to check out; and if you're not (I'm not), you've still got plenty to do. Our newer dorms (San Jacinto, Duren) are pretty nice; the older ones aren't terrible, though if you live on campus, get into Jester West if at all possible. Not the nicest, but you'll be living right next to pretty much everybody and everything you need (unless you and all your friends are engineering students lol). Jester East has some of those perks but it smells (I'm not even making this up, nobody knows what it is) and it's where a lot of the athletes live, so shrug.
Pretty decent bus system, free for UT students, so you don't necessarily need a car. Good thing, too, since the roads in Austin aren't nearly as well laid out as Houston's, and the drivers here are really awful.
As for cons, it is a big school so it can be easy to get lost in the shuffle; you have to make an effort to get plugged in with peeps but it isn't too hard. If you like real Asian food of any sort, stick to Chinatown in Houston 'cuz the Asian food here is nowhere near as good/cheap. If you like Tex-mex or whatever, though, you're good to go. Badly planned (unplanned??) roads, terrible drivers.
shrug I could go on and on, UT is a great school and I've enjoyed my time here a lot (so much so that I'm stuck here for more than 4 years keke) but you should definitely come up and check it out yourself at some point.
As for Rice... good school, very eccentric though. Great place for soon-to-be-insane academic types and people who like drinking A LOT.

New River Community College:
Pros:
1) Cheap tuition 2) You can't get turned down!
Cons:
1) It's a community college. Shitty academics 2) It's a community college. Shitty sports/extracurriculars 3) It's a community college. Shitty parties.
Seriously. if you can avoid it, don't go to a community college. Now, since I've lived here for as long as i can remember, i can also plug:
Virginia Tech!!
Pros:
1) Good football team 2) Highly respected engineering program 3) Highly respected business program 4) Really good Chemistry department 5) Blacksburg has a very low violent crime rate (April 16, 2007 being the exception, not the rule) 6) #1 RATED FOOD IN THE NATION, BITCHES!!! (seriously, the food at West End is amazing, you have to try it! people from VT back me up on this!) 7) Starcraft? Let me introduce you Torgerson Hall, the perfect place for a LAN party. I've played starcraft there with friends back when I was in high school, we'd get 4v4s going no problem. Lag? What lag? 8) ROTC program is *the* best in the nation outside of the academies. 9) Winters don't really get too cold. We get a big snowstorm every now and then, but it's pretty rare. No other natural disasters to speak of. 10) Pretty good parties if you can find them. Just cruise the frats, though, and you'll be ok.
Cons:
1) Engineering program is cutthroat as hell. 2) Nothing to do in a small town most days. ><
|
Bowling Green State University Pros: -Ice Rink (It's a big deal if you're from the South like me) -Somewhat close to big cities like Detroit/Cleveland/Columbus/Cincinnati so you can catch big concerts if you really want to. -Good Saxophone Department -Lots of parties -Good diversity of people -Some pretty good lookin girls, although I guess there isn't a significant amount of great looking ones... haha.
Cons: -A lot of dumb people... -It's a small town (Not much to do) -Cold as a witches tit in the Winter -I know of a lot of teachers who I just didn't find qualified to work the jobs that they do.
Thankfully I'm transferring schools next semester...

eh, they aren't that bad. It's a good place to get all of your general education courses out of the way for cheap if you don't want to spend 100x the cost at a regular college. In fact I got all of my general ed classes at community college before transferring to AAU for like $80 instead of the $8000 I probably would've had to spend =/

I go to UCSB for computer science.
[ PROS ] - Oh my fucking god, the party scene. It's insane. If you know just a few people, chances are there are multiple parties for you to go to Thurs-Fri-Sat and often weekdays if you're game. You'll never be bored with nothing to do. - VERY good looking girls, and a high girl-guy ratio. - The dorms are crazy fun. - On the beach. - The Greek system party life is big, but the non Greek system party life is even bigger. - Weather is great. It rains a little in the winter but other than that, as good as you could ask for. - It's a great school for engineering and physics, other sciences are good, and the rest is average. - People are generally relaxed so you don't get ridiculous competition going on, but coursework is difficult and time consuming enough to make your learn your shit. - Engineering classes are small. I would say my average class size is 30, I even had a class with 6 people last spring. - Lots of good food in the local college town. - Professors are generally cool and approachable. - Good research opportunities for undergrads, at least for computer science (though I'm not talking Harvard style here). I'm not sure about other majors. - Generally you have a lot of room to take extra classes in your field that you are interested in, get some research experience, or just take it easier on yourself and take less units. - The university is rising in rankings and funding every year.
[ CONS ] - Oh my fucking god, the party scene. If you walk outside in the main areas of the college town there are people running around drunk and screaming every night. You learn to sleep through a constant level of noise. Though I do choose to live in the middle of the crazyness so if you prefer quiet there are places to live. - It's distracting that people always want to party or go to the beach and such instead of study. Hehe. - The school is gaining respect but isn't at the level of UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, or ivy league schools and such yet.

Lol a lot of people like 5) haha. The winter IS cold but usually manageable but it seems like it gets colder every year (lucky me I get to go to WSU this spring where it gets WAY colder ) I think Ohio State has THE biggest campus/student body but we are def top 3.
Another reason to go here would probably be the study abroad program if you want to travel because we have the biggest study abroad program in the US (hence the many foreigners here). Our hockey and basketball are awesome (NC in hockey 2 years ago) and basketball is always a final four threat. But yea our football is only ok but it is taking steps forward (the OSU game showed we are not at big ten title step yet but Dantonio has a good recruiting class coming and he has a good attitude). Tailgaiting on campus is also very cool with great atmosphere and also people usually aren't dicks to opposing fans who come to tailgate as well.
As for academics, its pretty much like decaf said as you can give yourself really easy classes when your taking prereqs and stuff and you can have an easy major (packaging lol, but for some reason we have a really good program for that). Engineering and hard sciences are somewhat good except our nuclear physics which is ranked only behind MIT. Social sciences tho we have some really awesome stuff.
Cons can be the fact that its labeled a party school and we have a lot of students and some come here to party and sometimes they can be very annoying, although they are trying their hardest to tone down that label (much to the annoyance of students who do study hard and want to party sometimes). MSU also as decaf said not a "top school" (I think like 30ish in national rankings or something) so it doesnt have that top reputation as an undergraduate institution. some top grad programs tho.

University of New Haven
Pros: 1) Best Criminal Justice program on the East Coast, one of the best in the country. Google Henry C. Lee if you're interested in CJ, he's a big name here. I think he still teaches. 2) Many creative majors as opposed to the "usuals". Music and Sound Recording, Music Industry, Fire Science, Forensic Studies, Marine Biology. 3) The beach (The Sound) is not even a mile away. 4) New Haven party scene is mad close. 5) Can you say college town? Yale, UNH, Southern, Wesleyan and Quinnipiac U all hang out together. 6) Football's back. 7) Solid education here, and high job placement. 8) If our team ends up sucking, Yale Bowl is really close. 9) High international student population 10) Tons of financial aid (my financial aid is 32K) 11) Tons of babes, thanks to the beaches nearby. 12) Intern at ESPN 13) New Haven is also a good scene for shows 14) New York and Boston are really accessible from here 15) Greek. 16) Freshman Study Abroad 17) Living Learning Community: Room with people in your major and the entire floor is like that (Engineering, Music and Bio)
CONS: 1) 2 off campus shootings put us into lockdown in the past couple of weeks. 2) Yale's so close... 3) They accept way too many Freshmen, and we are all tripled 4) If you get Bethel, cry. 5) Some of the teachers suck.

Ok, I might as well do one for Duke.
Pros:
1. Academics 2. Sports 3. Clubs for everything 4. North Carolina Weather 5. Alcohol flows like water 6. Greek life 7. Beautiful campus 8. Durham isn't as sketchy as it's made out to be 9. So many things to do on campus 10. You'll love it here
Cons:
1. No gaming community 2. Food isn't great 3. Math 102, 103, and 104 lolololololo suicide math classes. All hilariously difficult classes unless you're math people, but on the plus side, you get to choose between the three! Luckily, most majors don't require you to take higher than Math 31/32.
EDIT: Haha, this sounds like one of my old map reviews :D

It is not like they are unique to that campus or as if you can graduate with any natural science degree without vector calculus.

103's basically the engineering weedout for multivariable calculus, so you have hundreds of kids taking a horribly curved class = fail.
102's not that bad, it's multivariable calculus for econ majors, so more linear algebra, optimization emphasis. Same deal here, though.
104 is an actual linear algebra class that's essentially 100% proofs.
Actually, I hear maths 107 and 108 have easier curves (partial/ordinary diff. eqs.), so if you get past the weedouts, you're pretty much golden.
And they also come in "accelerated" versions that are just even more rofl.
EDIT: But still, a large majority of freshmen complain about Math 103.

Multi variable ain't harder than single variable calculus, it is just that it builds on the former which means that if you did not learn it properly you will get a hard time now.
Tips for those who thinks on going any type of science: Learn all the math you can properly, do not just learn how to pass the tests but learn what the math actually says.. Not to get math grades, grades are always easy to get, while getting a deep understanding for the math will save you a massive amount of time later.

Well Pittsburgh is pretty big a lot of students, stores, places to eat, and the two main roads Forbes and 5th pretty much take you anywhere you want to go.
Nice overall scenery, I think 100k+ students or so, pretty diverse student population in regards to ethnicity and background. Hard school at least in my opinion, library stays open until 2am and there's people studying here until the security guard kicked everyone out.
School has like 30 buildings overall so get used to walking from place to place. They have shuttle buses that take you from building to building if your not into walking, which are free for students. Also all public transportation for Pitt Students is free with your school ID to anywhere you want to go, save on gas. Buses also come around every 10 minutes so there's no long wait to get from place to place.
As far as partying goes, haven't done much of that, so can't give you any info. But Pitt has special events from time to time that you can go to and socialize. They had a UFO themed opera concert thing last week, was pretty interesting to say the least.
EDIT: Don't go to Penn State, tuition is cheaper at Pittsburgh and its basically the same thing.

University of Ottawa
Go if you want... It doesn't really mean shit what University you go to in Canada. Only distinct advantage of going to Ottawa U is if you really want to take courses in French (everything is offered in both official languages). It's in the middle of downtown and there's not much trees or grass, so it's pretty dreary if that's important to you... But the transit goes directly to it... Really... if you live in Canada, just go to the University closest to where you live.
Protip: University is really easy, so don't stress out about anything. It's pretty hard to fail unless you're like... a complete retard who goes to midterms hung over... Applying and paying for University will be the hardest things you do in it, because you have to go thru such retarded beurocracy and it costs a tonne... But other than that it's no worries.

1) PARTY 2) Still manages to be a sick party school and have decent academic standings (not great but w/e) 3) Huge campus/student body. Biggest campus in the country i think and 3rd most students. 4) Pretty fucking good at bball/hockey/football(okay not really lol) 5) Diverse (actually this is fucking annoying, all these stereotypical blacks and asians are fucking OBNOXIOUS) 6) Classes as easy or hard as you want them to be
CONS: 1) it will probably be super cold in the winter Lol a lot of people like 5) haha. MSU also as decaf said not a "top school" (I think like 30ish in national rankings or something) so it doesnt have that top reputation as an undergraduate institution. some top grad programs tho.
is packaging in the engineering college? Do you have to take MSE 250? That shit is fucking gay.
|
I have no idea if packaging is in the engineering college or anything about related coursework for that stuff or what is required for it, all I know is that MSU is supposed to have a good program in that and that a friend of mine who was in packaging got offered a paid internship at anheiser bush for packaging. I was an Anthropology student :D Didn't you say you were going to MSU Sadist?

Yes im in Mechanical Engineering, all my classes are fine except for FUCKING MSE 250, its not even hard, but THERE IS NO TEACHING OR INSTRUCTION AT ALL, ITS TERRIBLE AND I HAVE A LAB DUE THAT I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO......God fucking dammit.
my TA is incompetent or just doesnt give a fuck, Its so annoying. Hes from China so I cant entirely trust what he says about something because he might have misspoken or something.
For example, my lab says theres a written portion due, but he said there wasnt, but can I really trust him? Of course not, he could have read it wrong or something. Its agitating as hell.

University of Hawaii at Manoa Pros -Good Engineering Program -Good Marine Biology Program(we are in the middle of the pacific) -Good Asian/pacific studies programs -Lots of Asians. Hawaii is majority Asian and the school reflects that. -Interesting culture. laid back and diverse. "Aloha Spirit" -good agriculture program -It's in Hawaii -Near the beach -Nobody honks their car horns EVER -pretty close to the city -fairly good financial aid
Cons -Fairly isolated. No road trips for us. -No Greek system -public transportation sucks -few parties -cruddy dorms right now except for the newest one(where I live). They're renovating the older ones so it actually isn't that bad anymore.
Also note that Hawaii is a Democratic state. Republicans make up only a small percentage of the population and government.

+ Harvey Mudd is a fucken killer school for engineering (tied for #1 undergrad and also fucken hard) - the food i hear in Harvey Mudd is fucken horrific that my sister who graduated in 08 always bought from the nearby market or restaurants.
+/- social life consists of studying like fuck monday through thursday then partying hard friday through sunday. repeat
+ mascot is a Mudd brick
- being an alumni won't get you into the school
+ good starcraft community, my sister talked about some people who play semi-professionally there, day[9] i think..
+ graduating from Harvey Mudd gives you instant jobz no matter your GPA
------------
UCLA +++ shits on USC like a horse
reasons? if you insist..
+amazing academics (#2 public university behind Berkeley barely) +great food +Westwood is a great neighborhood unlike USC's which is highly dangerous and filled with muggings, rapes, stabbings +/- humongous campus (long walks to/from classes if you are unlucky) +even the shittiest dorms aren't that bad and the suites are like hotels - difficult to get into +generally buff athletics - usc rapes ucla football wise although i don't care for football that much +weather is great, the grass is green and the girls are pretty

depends what you're looking for.
Brown tends to be more selective, but less academically good. They have some good weed and Providence is a nice city tho. Columbia tends to be depressing. They have strong academics tho. Cornell tends to be nice, but only in the summer. Hotel management was awesome when I visited though. UPenn tends to be dark and gloomy. Nice people though. Also heavy on frats. It ain't the city of brotherly love for nothin'
There's also some other good schools, like Northwestern, NYU, Tufts, Wash U, U Michigan, Emory, Duke, MIT, Cal Tech. Fuck em. Chitown pride. We're easy to get into and hard to get out of, hahaha.

GL with that OneOther, I tried that for Stanford when I was applying colleges... Epic Fail. lol
Adding on to what Caller said about the schools. Cornell I heard is like one of the most boring and depressing schools although their hotel management and architecture programs are incredible. You guys are pretty much in the middle of nowhere so it gets boring very quick I heard. UPenn, we all know their business school is one of the best but the city and area around UPenn is ranked as one of the most dangerous places out of the many universities in the US. Columbia, great academics of course, but also right next to Harlem. Brown not really sure what it's like, I just know that I really didn't like their campus when I went to go see what it was like.

If you badly want to get to Stanford but have a feeling that you have little to no chance (and it's hard to say no matter how good-looking your school resume is), you can opt for a transfer during your sophomore or junior college year when you should have already picked a major that you want to finish. It is a bit easier to get admitted to Stanford that way. Stanford transfer students don't have a very low admission rate compared to applicant senior high school students. That is assuming that you were already admitted in a respected school during your previous college years, in my case, Berkeley. I'm not sure if you can do a CC > Stanford transfer and be admitted. The CC > uni transfer is more common in other unis. I'd have to say that I didn't apply for Stanford when I was at senior high school though. Did you submit your early action app yet? If you want to know more about the upper tier schools go to collegeconfidential.com. You can even post your school stats there like your SAT/ACT/GPA scores and have other users tell your chances before submitting your application to the school. Who knows, you might be just wasting your time/money/effort just to have your hopes shattered. Wasabi: Thanks for the info. I am actually a long-time member at collegeconfidential.com I haven't submitted my apps but planning on doing it either tomorrow or Friday. I put a lot of work into the Stanford essays and stuff so I think it's too late to turn around. Secondary school report and teacher recommendations have already been sent in, too. I actually posted my GPA/SAT/ECs on collegeconfidential the other day but all I got were those typical "good shot but it's Stanford" responses.
Thanks for the information on transferring, I appreciate it.

I don't recommend Berkeley dude, I've been there. WORST campus ever. It's like this tiny-ass thing on top of a hill. And the town that's like 1min away is like straight up ghetto. Gangs walk through campus and shit. It's nasty lol.

reasons? if you insist..
+amazing academics (#2 public university behind Berkeley barely) +great food +Westwood is a great neighborhood unlike USC's which is highly dangerous and filled with muggings, rapes, stabbings +/- humongous campus (long walks to/from classes if you are unlucky) +even the shittiest dorms aren't that bad and the suites are like hotels - difficult to get into +generally buff athletics - usc rapes ucla football wise although i don't care for football that much +weather is great, the grass is green and the girls are pretty
the only plus thing you listed that doesn't apply to USC is the neighborhood and perhaps the food.

This is actually completely wrong. Getting into Stanford as a transfer student is MUCH harder. The acceptance rate for transfer students is usually around 1-2% . http://admission.stanford.edu/application/transfer/index.html
That being said, I cannot recommend it enough=). I can't imagine a better undergrad experience at any other school ~~

Lol I love all the people like "Go to this critically acclaimed school." Many people can't handle the teaching styles of their college professors. I know the valedictorian of the class that graduated before me went to Columbia because she thought she liked it and the reviews were good. She flunked out because it wasn't the same teaching style as high school. Keep that in mind, that even when you take college courses your senior year (AP, IB included), the teachers still tend to bias towards you being a high schooler sometimes. Not always, but it happens more often than not.

your valedictorian friend story is by far the rare exception of something going wrong, i've like never heard of people flunking out of college because the teaching style was different
i mean whats so hard about undergrad classes anyway, its a giant lecture hall, you go, do the reading, and volunteer when you know what you're talking about, how do you flunk out of that because of "style"

College professors expect a certain degree of maturity from students, and if you're still stuck in a high school mindset, you're just going to flounder.

How different is it in college? For one thing, I heard that you have to learn to take notes fast and only important things. Can you bring in laptops to classes and just type them?

Yes you can bring in laptops to lecture, depending on the class but aside from math or physics, a lot of kids bring laptop.
I prefer to write with pen/notebook then type it up while studying the concept!

yeah lecture is very lenient. You can bring a laptop, type your notes, do it old school and write them, you can use a tablet, you can even record your teacher's lecture (up to a certain amount for Duke at least) with the professor's permission. The lecture speed here isn't that fast, and the materials are usually on powerpoint which the teacher usually posts up on the school site. Also teachers aren't coming after your ass if you miss a lecture and shit, so it's all YOUR responsibility. And Hot_Bid, although I agree with your points in general, not all undergrad classes are straight up easy, it's not always about doing the reading and going to lectures, it's a lot more than that, it's a lot of personal investment to understand everything and stuff especially for a lot of math and science classes. However, yeah, it's not flunking out because of "style"... that's just a bad way to put things.

Most colleges are notorious for taking people taking math and putting them through the shithole that are proofs. They expect you to know how to do them, only you get raped in the process. The class average for the last test was a 50 or something. Thank god it was curved upward like 40 points...lol

If I weren't already going to Western Carolina, I'd be in UNCW.
Although the small drinking cups at Wag are definitely a downside.

Some professors show slides for 12 seconds that you have no choice but to use a laptop if you want to write down even the words on the slide. This is not always the case but it was the case for me for one of my classes that I had to use a laptop or else I would miss out on stuff.
So i recommend investing in a laptop if you have the budget since it can definitely help a lot in my opinion.
UC San Diego, I feel this UC is slightly underrated since everybody talks about UCLA or Berkeley. This is still a great school that you should be proud of if you get in.
+ Some Amazing Departments that are better than UCLA's/CAL's (Biology?)
+/- Some of the 6 campuses are deathly quiet
+ Food is not bad
- Girls are ugly (as stated before for emphasis)
I'd put more except most of the stuff I'd input are seemingly true rumors, I'd have to talk to my friends at SD about this college.
UCLA continued:
+UCLA is much cheaper for what I feel is better overall academics although USC is #1 in film and great in Business and Acting.
Don't get me wrong USC and UCLA are both great schools its just that USC is very pricey.

Seriously. You'd only be hurting yourself, anyway.
Hell, if you wanted to surf the web, you probably wouldn't show up to class. In large lecture classes, professors could care less if you showed up, and the only thing that really matters are your midterms and finals.

Unfortunately it is pretty expensive (50k lawl). We do have merit aid though, if you're good enough (i think we have 15 full rides and 100 partial ones) as well as regular fin aid, as well as this new thing:
"Odyssey Scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and whose annual family income totals $75,000 or less. Students whose families earn less than $60,000 a year will have 100% of their loans replaced with scholarships. Those whose families make between $60,000 and $75,000 will have 50% of their loans replaced. Students of any citizenship or national origin will qualify."
Although from what I hear the finaid office is a bit crappy. That may have been fixed this year though.
As for our essays, yeah, but they're better than "tell us about yourself" essays.
