That is the first sign that they may try to govern from the center rather than the far left. I am not saying Liebermann is a moderate overall, he is actually quite liberal, but on foreign policy (which is what his chairmanship covers), he could be said to be moderate to slightly right. Anyway, good job dems. And that is coming from ME! You really buy the hook for protecting Israel? Because that's what Lieberman's foreign policy opinion amounts to. He should've kept the environmental chair, not this one. He shares the same stance with every other hard right neo-con like Cheney and Wolfowitz, except he doesn't believe in the Rapture. Lieberman's policy stance is the very reason the Taliban have been so successful since the Cold War and the reason Pentagon-trained Somali pirates are hijacking oil tankers. I'm glad Hagel is finally teeing off on some of the asinine personalities on the right.

so 60 isn't really the magical threshold it's made out to be, but certainly the more senators the dems have the better. also should mention that if they can't get 5 republicans to hop in on the vote then they probably aren't going to get the blue dogs to support their vote either, just another note on why the difference between 57, 58 dems and 60 dems is marginal it'll be nice to have a congress that is filibuster-proof and can actually get things done come jan 20. it always bugged me how people pointed their fingers at the democrats in congress and blamed them for not getting anything done, when those people just didn't understand it was the senate republicans filibustering and george bush's veto pen that were coating everything with peanut butter, not the dems long post...

so even with 60 dems you still have to water things down enough to please the blue dogs, i really don't see what the difference is between pleasing 5 blue dogs or pleasing 5 moderate republicans, and that's why i (and most political analysts) think the difference between say 57 dems and 60 dems is almost entirely symbolic Edit: don't get me wrong, 60 dems sounds great, i'm just trying to clear up this misconception that 60 dems is some sort of magical threshold. seems like people just forget/don't know about moderate republicans & blue dogs. congress isn't so black and white but really, i'm glad someone else on TL is following the senate races this closely too! the more dems the merrier

A Fox 5 investigative reporter buys a Blackberry device containing confidential campaign information from the John McCain campaign. Full article ARLINGTON, Va. -- Private information at bargain prices. It was a high-tech flub at the McCain-Palin campaign headquarters in Arlington when Fox 5's Investigative Reporter Tisha Thompson bought a Blackberry device containing confidential campaign information. It started with a snippet we read on page A23 in Thursday's Washington Post. The McCain-Palin campaign was going to sell its used office inventory at low prices. But when we got there, it didn't look like we were going to get much. It was lunchtime and most of the good stuff was gone, picked over by early birds looking for deals on file cabinets, white boards, sofas-- anything headquarters could sell to get back some of their campaign dough. We saw laptops ranging between $400 and $600 with logins like "WARROOM08." We couldn't log on without a password, but staffers assured us the hard drive would be zapped before it was sold, and the computer would probably work. The hottest item? Blackberry phones at $20 a piece. There were only 10 left. All of the batteries had died. There were no chargers for sale. But people were snatching them up. So, we bought a couple. And ended up with a lot more than we bargained for. When we charged them up in the newsroom, we found one of the $20 Blackberry phones contained more than 50 phone numbers for people connected with the McCain-Palin campaign, as well as hundreds of emails from early September until a few days after election night.
