What is it?
I am looking for the lightest simplest version that supports WMA and MP3 primarily. I also want a version that has the global hotkey functionality.
Everything else I could care less.
Currently I am using 5.531 and it seems to lag and use about 27k mem. Also when I boot winamp this shitty popup splash window says something or trying to download something, I dunno I always close it.
Please don't recommend other listening programs, I don't wanna see "I use foobar" posts because winamp owns, just the newer versions seem to suck.
PS- I know I can use oldversion.com to get it, just not sure which one has what I need.
|
The lightest ones was easily 2.XX imo. but i'm not sure if they had global hotkeys or not, 3 and up started to feel bloated as shit so yeah, i dunno.
When you use the later Winamp versions do they still take up that much memory if you use the old skin?
|
yea I only ever use the basic skin.

You don't want foobar, and you already know about oldversion.com, what kind of help do you really expect? You already know what you need, it would be quicker to download a 2.xx and see if it has global hotkeys than it is to make a post.
|
I've always used 2.78 and 4.6K memory. Dunno what global hotkeys are though so I can't help you out there.

Yea, let me go and download every version and test them for WMA, MP3, mem use, and global hotkeys..

I use WinAmp but you're making it stupidly hard for yourself with your description lol.. you want a program that's extremely basic yet you want it to be WinAmp? :L
Foobar does suit your needs (not sure about global hotkey functionality, I think there may be a mod, what hotkeys do you want? Pause, Resume, Stop, Next, Exit? I'm sure it's got those).
No idea about old versions of WinAmp because latest one works fine, 24,000 kb isn't that much either :/ It's not like you need to have as much memory as possible unless you're playing a system heavy game or rendering or something.
|
just use winamp light - you dont really need all that crap that gets bundled with the full version anyway.
|
Winamp sort of pisses me off because When i edit songs that they would carry the album pictures, it fucks up other songs that dont have album pictures, and so on
Does anyone have a solution to that?
|
yea, go delete the album art.

I'm using version 2.5 Lite. It works great.
|
VLC media player is definitely the best version of winamp
|
Winamp 2 was great but definitely missing some features. Winamp 3 is when Nullsoft started developing complete trash. It was bloated, buggy, and had horrible memory leaks. They've certainly picked up their act since the 5.x versions.
You really shouldn't have any problems with the latest version of Winamp these days.

I used to use Winamp 2.95 religiously (now I use foobar hahahah). Was very light but lacked some much needed features.
Just for kicks I just downloaded 5.541, used 'Lite' install to remove features not needed, and it actually used the same amount of memory as 2.95. 15k-18k usually. Obviously it comes with the features you want as well.
(or you could just use foobar, even less ram usage if you are so concerned about it)

just get the latest but then i use the original skin, faster

I was under the impression that the lite version didn't have WMA support.
as far as foobar, that program is trash. Sound quality is worse than winamp and global hotkeys didn't work for me.

it does zxcvb for stop/play etc You can set keys that are able to control winamp even when it isn't the active window on, e.g. while playing sc.

it does zxcvb for stop/play etc Global hotkeys is like when you're playing SC and you want to skip/stop/play songs in the middle of a game. You can then set it to Ctrl+Shift+Z/X/C/V/B and it'll do that certain command while in a different program.
Since when did foobar2000 have lower sound quality than Winamp? Global hotkeys is built into foobar2000. I just installed the latest version just to recheck (not on my computer).
I would be interested in knowing the lighted version of Winamp that can play everything and has global hotkeys, though. Sounds like around 3.0 is good.

actually, anything 3.x is supposed to be bloated and suckass. just get 5.x - its the best of 2.x and 3.x without the crap, and has global hotkeys
|
I can't use 2.xx because it lacks the "manual playlist advance" option, meaning I can put a single song on repeat without cutting it off my playlist all together. Right now I use the latest version, and the only "lag" is the advanced jump to file, but I like that so it's worth it. Oh, and when I load my "all" playlist, but I have 10.000++ songs, so it's kinda normal, I think.

i use 5.3

I use the lastest 2.xx because it's very fast and doesn't eat up resources. I'm not sure if it supports global hotkeys though.

I second this "no".
What the crap Charlie.

I've been using Winamp recently, but my love for foobar is never going to fade away.
Thanks to IntoTheWow, I got to know foobar and well, I've been happy ever since.
PobTheCad, what ver of Windows are you using? I'm using the lastest Winamp with Windows Vista, and that error does not happen to me at all. ?
Are you using a skin? or the ones that come with winamp?.
|
just using xp and the original winamp skin might try reinstalling winamp

2.9 tries to connect to the internet just after being installed 2.666 is my preferred version - it has been working ok for me for a long time - but it has this one, very irritating bug; when I add say 20 files to an empty playlist, or scroll it down, the list has a very slow refresh rate - does anyone know how to fix it?
|
The best version is foobar <3
Really, what do you have against it? It's perfect. Don't get me wrong I used to be a winamp fanboy ~5 years ago, and I still have version 3.something installed here somewhere. But foobar is just superior.
|
WA 2.x with global hotkeys addon - is everything i need ;p
EDIT: It also has something I couldn't find in other players:
I like having my player on top
|
None is the best version. I was a Winamp user many years ago but these days there are so much better players (foobar for example). And using some very old crap version of Winamp isn't such a smart idea - it might be very vulnerable since it doesn't get any more patches. Not a good idea for a program which you use often. Either get the newest version (still sucks) or use another player.
