Why would they do that? What'll actually happen is that the entire world, including most of the US, will ignore this executive order and keep calling it Lake Ontario. Just as the entire world, including Google Maps, still calls the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico.
The other thing that'll happen is that people will remember that the president of the US tried to make them call it something else for ridiculously spiteful reasons, and laugh in derision. Constantly reminding the rest of the world how spiteful and dumb the leader of your country is. Do you think people laughing at that increases or decreases the soft power of the US around the world?

The joke is that you would name the "Superior" one Canada to prove you're even better.
They may certainly call it Lake Ontario but for psychological reasons a great deal of people can't ignore the EO or basically anything Trump does.

There's an inferiority complex going around when you get mad what other countries call things. France doesn't call the English Channel Canal d'Angleterre, they call it la Manche. This is irrespective of whether the countries share a common language. Sure Gulf of Mexico didn't mean it belongs to Mexico. So there's nothing to be offended by Gulf of America. Ontario just means big pretty lake? And America just means the continent Canada and the US are in. Big deal. Not exactly Lake USA. Only issue with the naming is Lake Superior should be the one to be Lake America since it's literally the largest making it the continent's defining body of water.

I think American citizens should be concerned about people "laughing" or the perception of people laughing "in derision" at the US if they want America to win the middle school yearbook competition. That is, not at all.
Announcing the government is going to call Lake Ontario Lake America triggers people who are primed for triggering, and it now has Canada talking about a lake instead of policy (a familiar refrain), driving Carney supporters closer to supporting his policies off a cliff, which seems to be what Carney wants. He needs to keep a razor thin majority in elections in 3 seats next week and one of the seats is in Quebec so they announced the negotiations blew up due to random French language stuff to shore up support there.

Correct, we are not going to waste millions of dollars for some short term jab that makes no difference. We will just let Trump continue to be a moron and spend our money finding new markets and improving our infrastructure to process our own raw materials.
The crazy thing is that Trump is so worked up about the race deficit, but if you took away our oil that the US makes bank on refining we would be the ones with the deficit. The US is getting a fantastic deal from Canada. Getting rid of our oil taxes was the massive win for the US is first trade deal and has been great for both countries economies.
It’s sad that the stupid vote is winning in the US and they elected king stupid to rule them.

If you do some digging, there is substantial documentation the USA has been complaining about french language laws in Quebec for years up to and including 2025. There is also substantial documentation the USA has been whining about it in 2026. The Americans are afraid Quebec unions will engage in illegal strike tactics and slow down electricity production. This gives the Quebec government enough plausible deniability when they shut off the electricity to New York. "hey man... what they are doing is illegal... what can i do?.. sorry New York."
The "sovereignty" party to which he is referring is the Parti Quebecois. They've run Quebec for 20 of the last 50 years and Quebec is still in Canada. The PQ is not realistically going to want to leave Canada and I dare say Quebec is the best place to live in Canada right now.. .and QUebecers know it. So ya, Quebec leaving Canada is not a threat even when the PQ wins the next election.
Lutnick is pissed off the Quebec Unions have some leverage in Canada/US trade negotiations. That is why he is tripping out. LOLOL.

If attacking Trump supporters on the basis of consistency was effective there wouldn't be any Trump supporters left by now.

1) I don't care because I'm not from Lake Ontario and don't live or work near Lake Ontario 2) people strolling along the banks of the Rhine or anywhere else in the world should care even less... if they don't live in the US (or Canada) and aren't citizens, their emotions are being manufactured (assuming there is such a group) 3) the "ick" or risibility of said people is definitely never going to affect or move me, why would it.
I don't mind talking about lakes and names as everything else is going swimmingly. For example Goldman Sachs just said energy out of Hormuz is at 2/3 prewar levels. Iran's dangerous Strait-closing mines turned out to be a 200 some odd bunch of suspicious looking trash bags and mine-shaped debris. DHS arrested just 1,300 people in VA and MD over two weeks. Important locations because VA and MD are state and municipally governed quite blue, and unfortunately have chosen the route of sanctuary policies, meaning the federal government can't get cooperation to get criminals from their custody. So the sanctuary jurisdictions let them out to walk among us.
So yeah this week the lake jumps out as something I'd do differently, Lake Superior instead of Ontario. But people 70% of whose exports go to the US, maybe they shouldn't get distracted by it. Other things look more important at the moment. Again my view is not particularly that he is "right." It's that he's the president and can do that.
