One can imagine passing trans men forced into the women’s bathrooms and explaining to baffled lawmakers that this is what their policy looks like. That letting people use the bathroom of their gender basically results in everything working out while forcing people to use the wrong bathroom immediately looks wrong. But then we remember that trans people are routinely assaulted and that this law essentially forces them to choose between breaking the law for their own safety or outing themselves and the comedy becomes tragedy. And just the total absurdity of so much energy and effort being put into something which is essentially a complete non-problem.Some people identify with a gender that is not the sex they were assigned at birth based on what a doctor though upon looking at their genitals for 3 seconds. There is just no reason to act here, and one would assume that the legislature would have better things to do, and if not, at least just enjoy a day of instead. It is completely baffling to me how much effort these people waste on something that could simply be solved by complete non-action, since there is no problem to begin with. Are there no real problems in those states that their legislature could focus on? I think it's at least in part because their "problem" is that trans people existing conflicts with their worldview and the point of the legislation is to oppress trans people in an effort to force them to conform to it (by ceasing to exist).
It's too hard for these people to literally legislate being trans as a crime in this day and age so they criminalize as much of trans people's existence as they can get away with.
It's remarkably depraved, but how this place works in my experience.

Nothing says "party of small government" like requiring businesses to post signs about their bathroom policies /sarcasm

The lawyer for the Qanon Shaman rioter is using this defence.
“A lot of these defendants… they’re all fucking short-bus people,” Albert Watkins told Talking Points Memo. “These are people with brain damage, they’re fucking retarded... But they’re our brothers, our sisters, our neighbors, our coworkers—they’re part of our country. These aren’t bad people, they don’t have prior criminal history. Fuck, they were subjected to four-plus years of goddamn propaganda the likes of which the world has not seen since fucking Hitler.” https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/capitol-rioters-trump-defense-comes-up-again-and-again-will-it-make-a-difference
While I agree that they’re idiots the issue I have with that is that they were repeatedly told that they were idiots following a conman. They can’t subsequently claim that they were too stupid to recognize a con and also too stupid to know they were too stupid when they were told that they were being conned and repeatedly told that they were stupid. Where’s the personal responsibility?

If affluenza worked as a defense, then I see no reason why stupidity doesn't work as a defense. It's stupid, but might just work once. Personal responsibility has long been abandoned by these people.

Personal responsibility is something non-whites and non-men take. A good old white boy just is how he is, and we need to embrace how stupid, gullible, and compliant he is in the grips of hateful propaganda if we are truly to become one America.

Attorney general Letitia James has been investigating whether the Trump Organization falsely reported property values to secure loans and obtain economic and tax benefits.
That's now the third criminal investigation into Trump's organisation. What are the chances any of this sticks?

Now i kind of wish to turn this around, and force anti-trans asshole establishments to put up signs saying "This establishment sometimes forces women to use the mens room." or something similar. (I know that this is idiotic, and don't actually want this, but it feels good to imagine.
On the other hand, i doubt that anyone actually notices any of those signs. From when i was in the US for a short time, i distinctly recall everything being absolutely plastered with warning signs. I have a very vivid memory of a glass door being so plastered with "warning: glass door" signs that one could no longer look through it, thus removing any possible risk of it being a glass door.

Question: did they specifically say how big the size should be? Could business just print out a 1x1mm sticker?

There are usually regulations like "easily visible and readable for customers" for this stuff.

Yes, size and location (as well as text and design).
+ Show Spoiler +Signage of the notice must be posted in a manner that is compliant with the standard for signage for restrooms under the Americans with Disabilities Act, (42 U.S.C. § 12131 et seq.) and must meet the following requirements: (1) Be at least eight inches (8'') wide and six inches (6'') tall; (2) The top one-third (1/3) of the sign must have a background color of red and state "NOTICE" in yellow text, centered in that portion of the sign; (3) The bottom two-thirds (2/3) of the sign must contain in boldface, block letters the following statement centered on that portion of the sign: THIS FACILITY MAINTAINS A POLICY OF ALLOWING THE USE OF RESTROOMS BY EITHER BIOLOGICAL SEX, REGARDLESS OF THE DESIGNATION ON THE RESTROOM (4) Except as provided in subdivision (b)(2), have a background color of white with type in black; and (5) Be located on a door to which the sign must be affixed or have its leading edge located not more than one foot (1') from the outside edge of the frame of a door to which the sign must be affixed.

We’ll probably end up seeing a bunch of relatively unintelligent folks, folks with mental disorders, or folks in both camps doing jail time, or at least copping a criminal record.
Of course it’s borderline impossible to draw a causal link of incitement legally, but a whole media machine that mislead and primed these folks, deliberately for clout in the ‘culture war’ are going to skate the negative consequences of what they did.

My tax refund is taking a long time to get processed so I googled the interest rate and lateness threshold and it turns out that in 2020 the IRS paid $3b in interest for late refunds of overpayments. Given the annual budget for the IRS was about $11.8b (2019 figure) this seems absolutely absurd.
How is it preferable for the government to pay a $3b fine for the underfunded organization having insufficient resources rather than pay a smaller amount for it to run properly. Hopefully funding the IRS so that it can actually function is on the Biden to-do list.

In general, the IRS should receive more funding, but the high interest payments are also due to things like:
- Paper records
- The Pandemic
- The IRS paying out interest starting on the April 15 "deadline" even though they extended it
I think the paper records problem is the biggest one. You've got the pandemic forcing work from home and preventing the IRS from doing anything with paper returns. They will have to dig themselves out of a huge back log now understaffed and unfunded.
The third bullet point is just idiotic policy that should be fixed in the future.

Hopefully funding the IRS so that it can actually function is on the Biden to-do list. They got me mine almost immediately and made sure they took their cut. I don't know if it's just those with higher refunds that are taking longer to process or what, but they're definitely getting their money from the people who can't afford it to be taken. If Biden does come around and get more funding for them (which we know the Rs will protest), maybe they'll get the money hidden away from them by the 1%.
Also, a thought has been running through my head KwarK, maybe you can answer it: What would be the ramifications if everyone 18+ was given 1mil tomorrow?
|
Biden's pushing pretty hard for the IRS to get more funding. Not even a ton, to be honest, but enough to restore it to actual functionality.
|
well... the myth of the dysfunctional government needs to be turned into a self fulfilling prophecy that is easy to prove and actually fulfill... by policies followed by slogans like "starve the beast!" and "the government is in the way of hard working people".
which have its own merits surely, but looking at the budget situation and debt problem it's not the biggest one.
this "fund" could be a good way for the average citizen to counter inflation though. depending on the conditions of course
