Texas has a panhandle too, but I don’t think that’s what he was referring to. It’s also not as famously backwater.

Welp, showing my foreignness. I see panhandle and think Texas.
Although Florida isn’t close to the border, are they planning on putting the immigrants on trains and freighting them up to Florida so that they can be hunted for sport? How would this work?

I think the logic stops at, “we think the idea of shooting foreigners is funny.” And that’s the most charitable interpretation, the likely one is far worse.

If you work from home, you're probably going to work erratic hours but it'll be about the same amount of effectiveness. You'll either negotiate for a higher amount and work strictly 6 hours straight, or take the lower amount with greater flexibility. I know when I used to program in C++, I'd do 24 hour pulls during uni for the thrill of it. Nowadays, not a fucking chance. Now that I work in Architecture, I completely shut it down when I leave the office.
I assume most places are the same if the pay isn't commiserate with the workload being thrust upon them. What on earth are you talking about dude lol? I dont know anything about programming, but you think construction workers, factory workers, fast food workers, waiters, retail store workers, doctors, nurses, police officers, janitors, teachers, cashiers, bus drivers, pharmacists, etc etc really only do 4-5 hours of "real work" a day???
From the experience of having dated a senior developper at a large tech company, she probably did spend about 4-5 or less hours on the average day working, but what's not being included there is the days of having to work 10+ hours for a crunch or to fix a problem that sprung up, or having to work weekends because of a problem, or having to attend meetings outside of when you would normally work, etc...

It must have been some other forum where people where joking about giving guns to fetuses a little bit ago. The knobs on “good fun” and “shit I’m offended” turn quite freely on y’all. The jig is up on assigning rules for thee, and not for me.
I second the famous Florida panhandle for backwards America jokes.
Honestly, I thought storylines like “Trump tacitly endorses shooting foreign immigrants” had played out years ago. If Trump says it, it’s not a joke, it’s deadly serious. You should be worried, scared for your life, just expecting vigilante snipers at the border to pop up. In the era of very transgressive comedy delivered every couple of weeks in a new Netflix special, I thought tolerance and humor would be thriving everywhere. You gotta have your Comedian union card to flash or something. Please tell me “That’s not funny” becomes the Dem party anthem in 2020 like it was in 2016–I need to see more super-serious Pepe the Cartoon Frog campaign website explainers.

I’m going to joke about shooting conservatives because they want to sentence to death for having a suspicious miscarriage. It will be extra funny because the only part that is untrue is me wanting to shoot conservatives.

Ah yes, holding the president of the United States to the same standard as a TL forum seems right.
I honestly dont care about him laughing but come on, you can't really think a joke on an online forum from a bunch of nobodies is the same as the president laughing about shooting immigrants.
Edited to note that trump didn't make the joke, just laughed and didnt rebuke it

I wonder... If Obama held a rally and went: "how do we deal with ultraright gun toting rednecks?" and A black guy in the audience shouted "Shoot them!" And everyone laughed, how would you react? Would you applaud the good joke? Or would you clutch your pearls and scream about how unprofessional and vile Obama is?

Trump’s joke about the panhandle can’t even be reasonably construed as a ratification of the shooting comment. It’s actually a mild admonishment when you look at it in context.
|
The joke about the panhandle isnt the point. It's the whole "laughing along with the crowd and failing to condemn a call for the murder of immigrants" that should raise the red flag.

Arming fetuses is parody. It’s not offensive. It’s a ridiculous joke scenario to illustrate the absurdity of giving full personhood to fetuses, combined with the absurdity of pro gun arguments.
You’re doing the weird thing conservatives tend to do where they assume that liberals believe anything they disagree with is automatically offensive and then try to reverse that by claiming that liberals are actually the truly offensive ones. Shooting immigrants isn’t a joke when the anti immigrant president laughs about it as a solution. He’s not parodying right wing extremism, it’s simply right wing extremism. Arming babies as a solution to in-utero gun violence is a joke because it’s clearly parody.
There are no instances of bad fetuses with guns that can only be stopped by a good fetus similarly armed. That’s why it’s funny. There are armed right wing gangs roaming the southern border looking for immigrants to shoot. That’s why that idea is less funny.

The president mildly admonishes a joke about shooting immigrants and asylum seekers after saying the US military can't physical assault immigrants and asylum seekers at the border.
The president mildly admonishes jokes about attempted murder. Sweet.

This is just another episode of “conservatives don’t understand exactly what jokes are and are therefore suspicious of them on principle”.

The president mildly admonishes jokes about attempted murder. Sweet. It’s not really even mild admonishment. It’s more like the creepy old grandpa on a sitcom making some gross comment like “I’d buy THAT for a dollar” about some young (possibly underage) girl and everybody laughs and shakes their head knowingly and says oh, GRANDPA...” as if to say “we know grandpa isn’t REALLY a creep, we love him and this is just how he is sometimes.” It’s barely even acknowledgement that it’s wrong, it’s trying to write it off as an endearing personality quirk of the panhandle.

Hmm, what was that again about justifying jokes about violence towards conservatives that's so funny?

As much as this stands as an open admission of your sliding scale of standards, I thank you for your honesty. The whole rally is a little boring if you don't hear the outrage, then the double take on "It's outrageous when he quips about it, but not when we do it!!!."

Come on, let's be disciplined and brave here. Everybody else can decry Trump for standards they won't observe themselves, but you have an opportunity to rise above the pack!
Let me reiterate:

We don’t even need to go so far as the creepy grandpa comparison. The argument that it wasn’t bad because the president mildly admonished jokes about murdering asylum seekers is breathtakingly bad all on its own.
Edit: Danglars, its not my fault you don't get my joke about shooting conservatives. But let me tell you, its plays very well. Big laughs. You shouldn't be so serious about this stuff.

that you’re equating a joke about fetuses holding a gun with the president joking about shooting immigrants is farcical through and through. if you can see no difference between the two i feel badly for you, and it has no place in an actual discussion to be frank. it is plain stupid.
things required to shoot immigrants: a ‘good guy with a gun.’
things required for a fetus to hold a gun: either a miracle heretofore unheard of, or a dead mother fetus combo.
yea that’s a worthwhile comparison.

It's not that he cant see the difference. I have no doubt Danglars and xDaunt are fully aware of how inappropriate Trumps actions were. However current political discourse is so divisive that defending your side has become an automatic response and is hard to stop. Sometimes it feels like you have to deflect (Danglars with TL jokes) or explain away (xDaunt with it's a joke and he shook his head) every fuckup to maintain your political identity. This has probably never been so prevalent as it is with the current GOP where you see people turning on decades old beliefs just to suck up to Donald.
In a healthier political setting people would be more willing to acknowledge the flaws in their candidates.
Edit: I should note that nobody is immune to this, myself included. I def make the effort to hold all candidates to the same standard but it definitely is hard when Trump is in play.

But, you see if Trump were to make the joke, it's no longer funny. I'm aware of the rules even as I make fun of the rules.
Carry on.
