This phone looks pretty good, but a 499$ price tag for the 4GB, and a 599$ pricetag for the 8GB? That's ridiculously overpriced. I'd rather go out and buy a PS3 than get an 8 GB phone that runs OS X. It resembles a palm pilot more than a phone too. Edit: But the unlocking mechanism is soo cool! All you do is slide your finger across the screen to unlock. Hope the screen is very very very scratch resistant.

Its camera is only 2 megapixels. The k750i has a 2 megapixel camera and its years old. Most new cameras are at least 3 megapixels, and I heard nokia is releasing a new phone soon with a 5 megapixel camera. The first comment to that article brings to attention a very valid point: that people dont like the feel of tapping on the screen to dial. This is very true. One of my friends got rid of his imate for exactly this reason. After all, a phone is a phone, all the other features are secondary. Apart from that the phone seems and looks amazing.

They probably stuck to a 2mp phone either to prevent it from getting thicker or to cut costs.

![]() The 2 mp thing is slightly a turn off - for how magnificent this phone looks they really should've added a better camera to seal the deal. As ETT said, the prices never go down. I believe I heard somewhere that Apple doesn't let any of its retailers dip below a certain price for their products =/. Your best bet is to find a refurbished one (offered by Apple) sometime down the line (I think 1gb Nanos are going for like 33 refurbished at the moment on apple.com).

it's annoying. believe me when i say you will not want a phone where EVERYTHING is touch-screen. it looks great, but sometimes you gotta press several times before it does what you want it to do, and its alot easier to missclick. it also gets dirty easily because your dirty fingers keep on touching it. and it also gets scratched more easily. also, it's way too expensive imo

Apple has its very own price protection policy, if any retailer attempt to sell the product less than the RRP (Recommended Retail Price), then it will be fined heavily. Anywayz, there are a number of ways to get around this: + Student Discount (about 10% off) + ADC Student membership (20% once in a life time, I bought my Macbook Pro C2D via this policy, got it down from 4300$ AU to about 3300$ AU) + ETT (25% off, once a year, for Apple staffs, so hook up with a friend work for Apple) + Refurbished product (not recommended, but if you're really in short of money then bahhh...) ![]() ![]()

Is not about "enuff", is about getting top tier. If you are getting a phone with such price and gadgets, they might as well add a better camera. Its like getting a top computer and a 15" monitor with it. A 15" monitor es "enuff", but doesnt match the rest of the computer.

Then there is the whole functionality thing. Really you are better off getting like a phone + PSP or video iPod if you need multimedia shit on the go. Would still be cheaper even with accessories. : [ Oh and the camera thing.. 2mp is plenty, the real thing to look at is what its made of. Most phones use plastic lenses and shit, so they still look terrible. 1-2mp with quality components is plenty for a camera phone. Im gonna assume it uses decent shit as opposed to most of the competition.

So you're looking for iPhone with a 5mp, 3x optical zoom digital camera, big flash on it, at the price tag of 600$ with all of those unique features? LOLZ, keep it real, mate. In term of picture quality from these little cameras, I say 2,3 MP is not so much different from 5MP, why? Because of the size of the optical lens is so bloody small (to keep the battery usage & occupied space to a minimum). Apple addded the camera in just for the sake that everyphone these days has a camera, not that they want to commercialize iPhone as a CameraPhone like SonyK800 (where u get 3.15 MP, 2048x1536 pixels, autofocus, video(QCIF), xenon flash; secondary video call VGA camera). And also, the price includes how much money they've invested in developing: mutli-finger gesture recognition & scrolling, desktop class applications (iPhone runs OSX), and superb design.

to compare... i bought the Nokia N91 (UK version) for $800USD and its 2mp camera/video, 4GB hd, triband-3G, gps phone. it just got released in the states for $599. (iphone price)... **you don't really want a really big hd because the fone will lag like crazy without a good OS. but 4GB is more then enuf, considering the nearest competitor is 1gb. **1mp vs 2mp- they are WORLDSSSSSSS apart... if you haven't seen a 2mp cell phone pic compared to a 1mp, then you don't know what you're talking about. **the resoultion for the screen size is freaking amazing. i saw it on tv the other day and it basically destroys everything i've seen in cell phone capabilities. **if you take apart the phone and buy seperate things, of course its going to be "better" (psp + phone + ipod + camera) but that takes away the entire idea of the iPhone. its ALL IN ONE. that's the "wow factor" apple is selling. you don't need to carry all that bullshit with you. that's why you'd want this fone, so you don't have to have a damn purse to carry all those other shits. EDIT: i just read the "full specs" of the iphone, the gimmic is .. you have to sign a 2 year contract with cingular, so i take back my statement saying its cheap, its considering expensive just for this reason and its locked with cingular, no zoom camera, no 3g, no gps. but the screen is made of special crystal to prevent major scratches. so overall, i think the iphone will sell like crazy to those who are into anything with an "I" infront of it.

The price is quite high, but when it drops to a reasonable price for me, I will definately pick it up. My LG phone sucks as a standalone MP3 player since the battery on it drain so fast. It could be that because it It runs MP3 off of a memory card. Typing on it is horrible so I try to message as little as possible on it. The iPhone looks like it will do to cellphone what the iPod did to MP3 player.

Battery life is FINE. Talk time is 5 hours. Dont tell me you talk for more than five hours a day? Playback time is 16 hours. Again, would you ever listen to music for 16 hours a day? If you break them up, you'll probably have 2-3 hours of talk time with 8-10 hours of playback time.

Also, I.Phone and iPhone are different, stand for different things, and represent separate markets. Even if their patent was still valid, there would be no real case. Only partially correct. Don't have time to explain properly, but in a nutshell: - Cisco (through the company they purchased) has a registered TRADEMARK (not a patent). A registered federal trademark in the US lasts for ten-year terms that can be renewed and extended indefinitely as long as the mark is being used by the registrant to identify a good or service. - On the face of it, it appears that Apple is infringing on Cisco's intellectual property right with respect to the trademark "iPhone". Cisco is the owner of the registered trademark, and that brings with it a host of very powerful assumptions that favor Cisco. - BUT: Apple is not stupid. They are certainly smarter and more thoughtful than any of the amateur pundits that are posting all over the internet right now about how they blundered. Apple must've done their homework and determined that a) there is a legal basis on which they can use iPhone without Cisco's permission, AND/OR b) they are confident they can negotiate a satisfactory settlement with Cisco for continued use of the "iPhone" mark regardless of what the law says. Bottom line: Apple has done a risk assessment and concluded that the benefits outweigh the risks. They did not just do this on a whim. - Speaking of legal principles, there are a number ways Apple can joust with Cisco in the courtroom and come out on top. Off the top of my head: 1) Trademark rules in the US allow the use of the same mark by two different products/organizations if the product/industry is different enough so that consumers could not reasonably be confused between the two. There is actually a trucking/transportation company operating in N. America called "Sysco". They could probably call themselves "Cisco" and the real Cisco likely would not have a case against them because there is little reasonable chance of confusion (i.e. no one is going to call Cisco the trucking company to order internet equipment). Accordingly, Apple may argue that the iPhone cell phone is a significantly different product than what Cisco (Linksys) is offering (a VOIP phone) and that both companies should be allowed to use the "iPhone" name. I suspect this is why Apple's spokespeople having been heard repeating publicly the mantra that Apple is the first company to use the name "iPhone" for a cell phone. 2) Apple may try using the "McDonald's" defense. A trademark argument most famously used by our beloved fastfood chain, that anything that has a "Mc" in front of it, even if it has nothing to do with food (McPhone, McTshirt, McHouse, etc), is reasonably associated in the public's mind with our favorite global peddler of transfat-enriched food products and that McDonald's, by virtue of its marketing success, owns the entire family of potential trademarks. I think this argument is quaint, but weak. "i" is too weak as a distinguishing trademark, especially today. Too many products by too many companies are already out there for Apple to argue now that they somehow should have a monopoly on "i". They might of tried this a decade ago when the "iMacs" first started coming out, but too late now, me thinks. 3) The name "iPhone" may actually be too generic a term for any one company to claim exclusive ownership within an identifiable industry sector. In other words, both Apple AND Cisco may be able to use the name for their products. I'm no expert and I haven't spent much time thinking about this issue, so I'm sure there are plenty of other legal arguments Apple could make. Anyway, who cares? Clash of the titans, let the jousting begin! And the Apple phone looks like it could have some serious potential. I'd hold off on purchasing one though until it's gone through a few iterations first. The "iPhone" won't be a mature product for another two or three years at least. But there is little doubt Apple has another hit on its hands.

13 reasons to doubt the iPhone hype Quoted verbatim for the lazy: The honeymoon is over for the iPhone. It's not that we're sick of it already (well, maybe a bit), it's just time for it to answer some questions. Otherwise, it may join the Sony PS3 in the realm of "tech that looks absolutely amazing but is far too expensive for most people to even consider buying." Apple's iPhone: A mystery wrapped in an enigma smothered in question-mark sauce. Here, accompanied by rambling speculation, are those questions: 1. Why no 3G compatibility? The answer might be as simple as the fact that Cingular's 3G coverage still has gaping holes outside of major U.S. cities. The 3G question is very pertinent to those who want to stream video and audio to their phone at any time. But that requires living in an area with great 3G network coverage, and 3G will drain a battery faster than the 2.5G EDGE network. 2. Does the lack of 3G matter if the iPhone has Wi-Fi? If the user wants to only occasionally stream media or download files, the iPhone's Wi-Fi capabilities should scratch that itch...but only if you're at a Wi-Fi hot spot and not using it in the backseat of a car, on the train, or sitting on a park bench. And Wi-Fi will have just as much--probably more--of a draining effect on the iPhone's battery. 3. What's under the hood? Nobody knows for sure. According to this Information Week article, the iPhone is likely have a Samsung CPU and video processor. If it's true, this may help explain the similarity in specs between the Samsung BlackJack and the Apple iPhone. For what it's worth, the BlackJack performed very well in our Web browsing and video tests. 4. Can you download directly from iTunes? This looks to be a big disappointment with the iPhone. Early reports, such as this iTWire interview with Apple's VP of iPod Products Greg Joswiak, say no. From the iTWire article: The Apple VP also quashed any speculation that the iPhone itself may house a self-contained version of iTunes. "iTunes was designed to exist on the Mac and PCs. That's where the music should live." Don't tell me where my music should and should not live, homeboy! I want it to live on my iPhone! Regardless of where my music wants to live, if Apple is touting the iPhone as a device that runs Mac OS X, doesn't that make the iPhone a Mac? Which brings us to the next question... 5. Just what does Apple mean by "it runs OS X"? And what do they mean by "multitasking"?During his keynote address, Steve Jobs mentioned the ability to multitask as one of Mac OS X's strong suits, as well as a reason why the operating system was chosen for the iPhone. Given the lack of 3G compatibility, that "multitasking" must be limited to applications within Mac OS X, not "multitasking" in the sense of being able to download a file while talking on the phone. That's the kind of "multitask" that 3G networks are built to do. Which begs the question: Who will really multitask between OS X applications on a mobile, touch screen device? At what point will anyone be simultaneously typing a document, formulating a spreadsheet, and composing a song on GarageBand on the iPhone? Playing media content while surfing the Web is technically multitasking, but it's possible that the iPhone will only be able to perform one of its three main functions at any given time: It's either an iPod, an "Internet device," or a phone, but it may not be able to do more than one function at a time. That doesn't sound like a big deal right now, but it could lead to an embarrassing situation if you're using your iPhone as a jukebox at a party when a call comes in. In all probability, the iPhone will run a watered-down version of OS X, with built-in restrictions on how the operating system can be used. No full iTunes. Probably no Skype or VoIP phone calls. It may be able to run "desktop-class applications and software," as Apple's iPhone site purports, but that's not the same thing as actual desktop applications. 6. Will it actually be called the iPhone? Not if Cisco has anything to say about it. Will it be the iPhod? The iCell? The iThing? The iCaramba? And will the iPhone have the same appeal with a different name? It might. After all, the name "iPod" doesn't exactly scream "music!" 7. Who's this phone for, anyway? Who can afford this thing? This answer is simple: Paris Hilton. The iPhone looks to be the next glamour phone, albeit one with serious potential. It's billed as a "smart phone," which brings to mind business users. At $599 for the 8GB model and $499 for the 4GB model, it's definitely priced for business users. But as Tom Krazit and Declan McCullagh kindly point out: 1. Yahoo e-mail isn't going to cut it in the business world. 2. It's unknown which business applications will be available for the iPhone. 3. Will there be file-compatibility issues between the iPhone and Windows-centric businesses? Remember, the Vista age is almost upon us, and even next-generation Windows programs may have issues with files created in older versions. If you add everything up, the iPhone looks like a starter smart phone for twentysomethings who just got a fat raise. It could even be compared to a touch screen Sidekick 3 Pro. At least the Sidekick has a mini-SD card slot so that you can expand its storage capacity, which brings us to... 8. Will Apple give the user any freedom? Want to know why there's no memory card slots on the iPhone, nor will there likely be a user-replaceable battery? Because Apple doesn't want you to lay a finger on its phone without paying the piper. Anyone who owns an iPod knows how hard it is to replace the battery, replace a dead hard drive, or fix the thing without going through Apple. Anyone who owns a Mac computer also knows how hard it is to upgrade any internal components without going through Apple. If you can figure out how to do these things yourself, you'll break the warranty. If you go through Apple, you'll probably have to give them more money in the process. The iPhone is likely to be no different. To fix it, you'll probably have to bring it to an Apple Store. To expand it, you'll probably have to buy a new iPhone. Note: iPhones are still expensive. While we're on the topic of user freedom, what about the software aspect of the phone? It's unknown whether users will be able to write their own software or run third-party programs on the iPhone without breaking the warranty. It's quite possible that the iPhone's only programs will be Apple iPhone programs. 9. How much more than the unit price will the iPhone cost?As expensive as the iPhone is, it may get insanely unaffordable once you add in the monthly charges. To get the most out of the iPhone, you'll likely need a voice plan, a data plan, and possibly Cingular's own Wi-Fi plan. Cingular has special data plans for its BlackBerry phones, and it's possible, if not likely, that the iPhone will have its own special plan prices. But if that's not the case, be prepared to pay through the nose. If you look at the costs of Cingular's low-end voice plan (450 minutes/month for $39.99), unlimited data plan ($44.99/month), and unlimited Wi-Fi plan ($99.99/month), you may need to tack on an extra $100 to $200 per month to use your iPhone to the fullest. Also of note: Cingular charges a $175 fee for early contract termination. 10. Is this another iLock-in strategy? The iPhone is the only phone that runs Mac OS X, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Judging from the iPod's seamless, user-friendly integration with iTunes, Apple is sure to unveil iPhone-management programs that make managing contact info and other data as painless as possible. And that might actually be the problem. Imagine this: You buy an iPhone, you manage all your iPhone's data on your computer--contacts, music, files--and your iPhone kicks the bucket...dead battery, iPhone icon with x-ed-out eyes, whatever. What now? Unless there are third-party programs to send your data to another phone, the easiest way--and possibly the only way--to get all that data onto another phone will be to buy another iPhone. Note: iPhones are still expensive. 11. Just how useful is the touch screen? The iPhone user interface looks elegant, innovative, and easy-to-use, but is it the best interface for a device like this? Whenever you do anything, the iPhone will command your full visual attention. "No buttons" may be sexy, but it also means you can't do anything without looking at the phone. The iPhone's iPod usability may suffer even worse from the touch screen. Have you ever tried to operate an iPod while it's in your pocket? You can do it, but it's hard. The iPhone will make blind iPod-surfing downright impossible. That said, it looks like the iPhone will eliminate accidental pocket-dialing once and for all. 12. Will early adopters be the only adopters? If the iPhone takes the world by storm, other manufacturers and carriers will borrow the iPhone's most popular features. And they'll probably offer them at a lower price. 13. What goes into a cell-phone purchase? Cell phones aren't MP3 players. Even if Apple has the sexiest phone out there, many important factors come into play when anyone buys a cell phone. * How pleased is the user with the carrier? * What other phones are out there? * What will the phone primarily be used for? * How important is it to have the "it" phone of the moment? And is price no object? Apple seems to be banking on the last factor being the most important. But is having "it" it? If so, the iPhone may simply be iRon pyrite.
