Did you just handwave an entire industry? Complete crock* of bs, man. Show some stats on patents or PhDs or try to back up what you're saying in a remotely quantitative way. Quite sure you're wrong.

Moreover, braindrain from Canada->the US has been a problem for literally 50 years. Fortunately we're attracting more skills immigrants than ever before, far more than enough to replace those moving from Canada to the US.

Also yes, Toronto is ungodly expensive. Toronto =/= "Canada".

we are not attracting top notch computer science and software engineering grads from other countries. the salaries and projects are just not there. "skills immigrants" != software engineers. So your comment isn't really a direct rebuttal to my statement.

the problem is that the braindrain is accelerating.

it is not about patents and PHDs. its about the best cutting edge stuff is all being performed in the USA. Not Canada.

if you're a DR, nurse, x-ray tech, lab tech etc etc who is not from Canada or the USA and you are coming to NA where are you going? that was a tough question 15+ years ago. No longer. It is USA ... all the way.
a growing # of Canadians are without a family doctor.

Also, Canada must attract more immigrants because the birthrate is declining.
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-630-x/11-630-x2014002-eng.htm

A country with a population as small as Canada must have some population growth in order to be taken seriously as a 1st world country. With a birthrate as low as Canada's ... immigration is the only way.

Apparently, they attempted to swarm someone else earlier in the day and failed.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/man-death-eight-teen-girls-charged-toronto-1.6692698

Lets be real here man. This is Canada. The longest any of those girls will stay in jail is 5 years, and I would bet the ones under 14 won't even go to jail. Our justice system is a joke.

the problem is...
If you stiffen up sentences you must pair it with substantial rehabilitation. That is very , very expensive and no one wants to spend the money to do such a thing. It is the best long term solution... its also , by far, the most expensive.

If you stiffen up the sentencing while offering nothing solid rehab-wise then you end up steering soft criminals towards a path of evolving into hardened criminals.

The implication being these girls are somehow soft criminals? You're pretty hardcore if even murder isn't enough to label someone a hard criminal to you.

I agree in principal rehabilitation is good, for the right crimes. Things like murder or just random acts of violence like this in general shouldn't be treated as a "they just didn't understand what they were doing" situation though. I don't see any of them being worthwhile to rehabilitate to begin with.

Considering what is known publically about these girls and the crime that is bold take. Then when you take into account all the research and success with rehabilitation vs just harsh punishment, it is clearly a bad one.

the girls are suspects in other violent crimes.

I'm working on cutting edge stuff. I've pulled in people from India, China, Turkey, and more to immigrate to Canada.

https://pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2022/10/17/strengthening-canadas-position-leader-5g-and-digital-innovation

It's anecdotal, but you're speaking so broadly.

I don't know how you wouldn't associate "cutting edge" with phd/patent. What does cutting edge actually mean at that point?

Huge amount of US firms hiring Canadians remotely in the last 2y. Brain drain happening online is less of a problem of people moving like in the past.

Let me review your links I guess.

Vague. What does that actual mean? "Taken seriously?" We're a G7 nation.

cool, 85% of the students from Canada's biggest and best software engineering school leave the country immediately upon graduation. I've already explained why in previous posts.

it is not anecdotal. i am talking about Canada's biggest and best software engineering school. its not like there are only 30 students graduating each year. Waterloo's graduating classes in Software Engineering, Systems Design ENgineering and Computer Science is over 300.

it is not vague. if canada's population falls it can't be taken seriously. it's population is already low. Canada's population is the lowest of the G7 nations.

The economic opportunities Canada provides no longer draws top talent.

We used to ATTRACT top notch people into our medical system. That is no longer the case.

Over half of immigrants settle in Ontario. Ontario no longer provides that amazing economic opportunities it did from 1945 to 2005. The % of Ontarians working at minimum has tripled in the last 20 years.

trying hanging out in a major city in Ontario. its sad man. just sad. it is an endless sea of permanent working poor immigrants.

Regarding Canada's eroding medical system...
I'm driving my grandma from the GTA to Buffalo to get her cataract surgery. She has grown almost completely blind while the DRs continue to claim the problem is not bad enough to warrant skipping the line up she has been in for more than a year.

https://www.cihi.ca/en/explore-wait-times-for-priority-procedures-across-canada

Mass General Brigham now has an ad campaign specifically targeting Canadians waiting for necessary medical treatments.
https://www.massgeneralbrigham.org/Canada
My grandfather has property in both Pennsylvania and Ontario. He is a Canadian citizen and had his hip replacement in the USA. He is still on the waiting list in Ontario and he had the surgery 7 months ago.

I laugh when I hear a Canadian politician whine about the dangers of a two tier medical system. We have a multi-tier medical system right now.

85% of 300 people go to the US. Ok. Waterloo isn't the only school that exists. The overall number for Canada is about 30%. How many Chinese, Indian, Brazilian, Ukranian, etc, comp sci grads end up coming here. A number that easily offsets the Canada->US migration. PS: US->Canada migration exists as well.

I understand that Toronto has problems. Don't paint the entire country with one brush with your anecdotal lens, especially when it's just arbitrary whinging with zero insights and no solutions.

>>we have a problem attracting quality, educated top notch immigrants which is why 6 million canadians do not have a family doctor<<
Stop making ludicrous leaps in logic. I'm sure you're also aware that a bigger problem is that new doctors want to specialize in specific fields of study and that the "family gp" is a dying breed in general.

What is your agenda exactly?

ludicrous?
this leads to poorer care. having a family DR who knows you and your family very well is invaluable when it comes to front line care for typical health issues.
you been to a walk-in clinic? do you have a family DR? The difference is night and day.

And the problems are more far reaching than just a lack of family care physicians. I've noted many of them. The entire medical system in Canada is much worse than it was 25 years ago. If you like we can go through the entire list again.

Solutions in Ontario? In order to fund solid social programs and maintain infrastructure the province requires an excellent private sector supplying the province with giant heaps of cash. Ontario requires a return to the super efficient energy sector it had from 1945 to 2007. With super dirt cheap electricity Ontario's manufacturing sector drew in tonnes of great paying jobs from the north eastern USA. This was a huge boon to Ontario's tax coffers. To get an idea how silly the situation is... just check out hydro/electricity prices in Saint Catherines, Ontario and then drive 30 minutes down the road to Buffalo (or any of its suburbs) New York.

This was a good first step towards fixing the issue.
https://www.oeb.ca/newsroom/2022/ontario-energy-board-announces-changes-electricity-prices-households-and-small
Also, nice to see the Ontario energy corp getting low price electricity generated by burning coal.

Solutions For Canada? I've said this before. I'll say it again. We need top notch geniuses like Chretien, P.E.T., former finance minister Michael Wilson, Mike Harris, Bob Rae, and Ken Dryden to make Canada great again. The current gang running the country are intellectual lightweights. I wish Ken Dryden or Bob Rae had won the liberal leadership. The current Toronto mayor is a great leader and a brilliant politician. We need more guys like him running the show.

As long as Ontario's private sector continues to struggle the province will never have the abundant tax revenue streams it did in the 70s, 80, 90s, up to 2007. This makes it impossible for the government to keep in place the very solid infrastructure it had for many past decades.

i don't know any Brazilian computer science students. I know many more from Iraq and Iran.
Toronto is a great place to launch one's software engineering career. When I was in Toronto my best source of new work was panicky phone calls coming from out of the blue ... "the guy just up and left for New York... we need your help man".

It is just sad to see anyone who hits the prime of their career leave. They get educated and preliminary work in Canada. Then ... they leave.

imo

The greatest female politician in Canadian history died today. "Hurricane" Hazel Mccallion was 101.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/hurricane-hazel-mccallion-longtime-mayor-of-mississauga-ont-dead-at-101/ar-AA16RJlQ?ocid=HandyCafe&cvid=6defc0a2b5314b35b5b57bc145406c93

She built Mississauga from nothing... into the 6th largest city in Canada. During her tenure as mayor the level of economic opportunity offered for all age groups in Mississauga was incredible. I can best describe her as Canada's version of "Judge Judy".

She was feared by every incompetent and corrupt politician in this country.

Canada has lost one of its greatest leaders. Sad times.

"I only spend the taxpayers' money Iike I spend my own, which is seldom," she said in 2014. "The people of Mississauga love that."

I think it's somewhat mean spirited to bring this up, but she did get convicted of a conflict of interest regarding public spending once, had an inquiry into a conflict of interest regarding public spending AGAIN and was only absolved because her son's company was unable to fulfill the contract requirements. That they were in consideration in the first place was not an accident.

It kind of sucks that every politician seems to have, no matter how shining they are on the outside, some ulterior motive to line their own pockets, or that of their family. Because hey, she did good job with the population boom in Mississauga that fell into her lap.

this is a distortion of the facts. here are the facts from the source i posted coming from a pro-liberal paper. the Toronto Star.

Sproat further ruled the chances of the votes benefiting WCD were minuscule and it was likely WCD wouldn’t have even qualified for the lower development fees.

this is where debating/discussing with googlers goes off the rails. 30 years elapsed between these two allegations. the 2nd set was dismissed and never got tested. any one in Mississauga can file any kind of complaint any time they feel like it. this does not make the complaint legit.

i'm guessing you never lived in Mississauga? i lived in Mississauga for 16 years. Hazel as Mayor, Harris as Premier and Chretien as PM. Of course, at the time I had no idea how lucky i was.
In 2004, my friends got instantly hired for $32/hour construction labourer jobs. then each of them would get fired at different times for punching out one of their co-workers. Then they get another labourer job for $32/hour a week later. Good Times! The alpha-dawg of our gang ... his uncles said it was the same for them in the late 80s except the pay about around $22/hour.

Unfortunately, Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, no longer offers this level of opportunity.

And Canada is on the scoreboard. Apparently it was shot down somewhere over the Yukon. Sucks for whatever soldiers will have to trek through there to find and locate the wreckage. Then somehow get it out.

Anecdote here, so take it for what its worth:
A family member of mine has worked for Microsoft as a software dev in both Vancouver and in Seattle, multiple times (couldn't make up his mind on where he wanted to live I guess).

Pay in Seattle for the same job was 40%-50% higher, before taking into account the favourable tax and cost of living situation.

Most of his colleagues in Vancouver were not Canadian either, and they were not looking to live in Canada; Microsoft was using the office as a holding place for international hires because the pipeline to get them into the USA was clogged. It was easier to move them to Canada for six months to a year, as the Can gov has bent over backwards streamlining skilled tech immigration, and then use that time to process a US visa to move them to Seattle.

Pretty sucky place to work in Vancouver for him... Fairly empty office, with massive turnover.

Canada's economy grew at 3.1% last quarter. Not bad.

Mississauga's population is declining. People are voting with their feet. Bonnie Crombie is no where near as good a mayor as Hazel Mccallion.
https://www.mississauga.com/news/mississauga-s-population-declined-since-2016-despite-adding-5-600-new-housing-units-according-to/article_8f33197d-2be5-5bae-b5f3-029cb2707220.html#:~:text=The 2021 census listed Mississauga, most recent conducted last year.

Mississauga is the only top-25 urban centre in Canada to see a decline in population. I grew up during Mississauga's boom and it was awesome. However, Mississauga is filled with economic immigrants who came to the city for its economic opportunities. That same demographic will leave when they can find better opportunity. That is why I left Mississauga.

Mccallion >> Crombie

The province of Ontario does not have a military budget nor does it carry on international diplomatic relations. It has some economic negotiations with neighbouring provinces and states. Therefore, this MPP needs to STFU. She is wasting time with her meaningless babble. She is clueless on these matters. She needs to stick to the topics within the purview of a provincial government.

A tonne of homeless people have been kicked out of hotels now that covid is over.

Winter is coming. WTF is the labour party representing the "common man" also known as the NDP and this MPP doing about that? Whining about Palestine? STFU, let the feds handle it and do something before a bunch of homeless people in the riding your claim you represent.... freeze to death.

Given the NDP booted her from the party, it seems like its been handled, no? Zero chance she is re-elected if she even makes it to end of term given the news of the day.
