What is ISIS ? I think i know but the name is different in french.

I think they´re called "Daesh" in french/by the french government

Daesh or Da'ish is more of a perjorative term and not exclusive to French (an abbreviation of al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi Iraq wa al-Sham)

No Daesh means demon in arab. It was a demand of the French Muslim community in order not to give any credibility to this islamist state which is quite smart by the way. Most Muslims just don't want to be associated with IS.

Nope it doesnt mean demon. It is roughly an Arab equivalent of the ISIS acronym.

http://pietervanostaeyen.wordpress.com/2014/02/18/on-the-origin-of-the-name-daesh-the-islamic-state-in-iraq-and-as-sham/

It is generally used by Arab ISIS opponents. I see it being used by Iraqis etc on forums.

I see some level-headed and intelligent individuals in this thread (not to say that everyone else isn't, simply basing that on how people react to an event like this) so I would like to ask everyone a question that has perplexed me for some time and hope that someone more educated on these sorts of issues could help me understand.

Every time something like this happens, there are netizens that go full-on xenophobic nationalist (and to some degree it's understandable, if predictable) and netizens that will say something along the lines of "this is just the doing of extremist fundamentalist nutjobs, you can't blame 1+ billion people for this, I am/know plenty of moderate adepts of islam that don't condone such a thing etc etc".

And that seems like a reasonable reply at first. The fact that you shouldn't make such huge generalizations should be pretty obvious. But here is my question: why do people only say this as if they're trying to save face? Why do they only try to shift the blame away? Why are there no "moderate islamists" protesting AGAINST the people who commit these acts? Why are they not publicly denouncing and shaming them? Why are they not making a clear statement through ACTIONS, not words, that they do not support such things and wish to distance themselves?

Someone on r/news made a very interesting analogy, although sadly that post was not that close to the top of the thread. For many of us, while in school, when two or three kids did stupid shit in class, the teacher might punish the whole class, and the students would straighten those fellows out. Why is this not the case here? Why are the "moderate islamists" enabling this attitude and behaviour, especially when it reflects poorly upon them as a whole?

Not to mention what a Dutch fellow pointed out a few pages back, how there are people on Facebook, residents and citizens of a developed European country, saying these attacks are justified.

If someone could explain to me, why these apologists come out of the woodwork and try to shift the blame away, but then continue to enable these actions by not distancing themselves from the extremists, I would be extremely grateful. I think insight into this would benefit us all.

French Muslim council commentated on the subject and condemned the attack and I feel they shouldn't have to but they're kinda forced because of the racist atmosphere there is in France at the moment.

We're way too tolerant towards religion tho. Religions are nothing, they are an expression of our societies, but by giving public recognition to specific religious group/institutions (the muslim council, the crif) that represent no one and that no one care about we've created a weird split in our society, like the muslim, jews and christian are a different type of french.
Today it's france under attack, atheist, jews and muslim indiscriminatly, but somehow there is a part of our society that - because we agreed to define them this way - are supposed to make amend and explain us that it has nothing to do with "islam".

you are on point, impressed by the quality of this speech, which i didn't expect, specially at the end where she makes a call to avoid any confusion with the french muslim and the terrorist, but that shouldn't restrain us to take severe measure towards them (the radical islam)

she also said that a "war" was intented to us, which i think is a bit misplaced

My thoughts go out to all the people who have lost friends and family in these cowardly attacks.

These attacks will not frighten people and only enrage them mounting in a more verbal and active anti Islamic movement…

I pity these terrorists for their complete blindness.
It is not fear, maybe a bit anger, but most of it is pity for the fools have ruined the lives of their victims, their families and loved ones and also have forsaken their own. People like this could not see any value or love in their own lives to have committed such heinous acts and for this they are to be pitied. They are fools led astray who have finally run on ground and forfeited their lives.

France already has some rather unique laws about religion, I believe the all religious garments and jewelry (hijabs and their variations (forgive my ignorance), cross necklaces, or Stars of David etc) are banned from public schools. It will be an interesting few weeks on the political end of things, to see what happens.

Also if it is found out that these gunmen(which is being said showed signs of professional training) came via Syria through Turkey. Holy hell...

I also wanted to say that i'm quite impressed by the unity of french citizen towards this incident.

French unity has always been lackluster since the hundred years war and seeing a lot of people gathering at the city hall of major cities of France is impressive.

If only people could act like this without the necessity of a horror like this.

I wouldn't in the least be surprised tbh...

Sad news and I was pretty shocked, but can't really be surprised to be honest. This shouldn't have happened but it shouldn't come unexpected that some radical islamists made the (at this point old? not sure) threats come reality.

It's really weird but I don't think I have ever seen the whole country united except for the victory during the world cup in 1998.

People are really sad but they are all united.

They wanted France to bow, now France is standing up.
