I felt very similar to all of you when jon died, specially the "hes not really dead" feeling. I felt much more scared when arya got hit in the head by the hounds axe (lol) Btw, I feel that Quaithe or w/e is her name, must be a serious badass to be able to teleport in the shadows (or enter peoples dreams) Also, arya assassin fighting!

a female character (forgot her name) reviving dragons from fossilized eggs. I eagerly bought the next one only to find out + Show Spoiler + next 300 pages contain no fucking mention of dragons at all. It's like 'hey, here are these dragons, now for some political intrigue and personal drama'. The final page of the book even had the author's announcement "I know there are no dragons in this book, I promise the next one will have more info" or in other words "TROLOLOL" I've dropped it with a vengeance since then. Spoiler #1 may not be entirely accurate, I'm going from my memory here, but it was a final chapter for that character and something spectacular happened, if you've read it, you know exactly what I'm referring to.

I don't quite follow this since the majority of the 1st book is what you seem to be bashing the 2nd book for. Sure sometimes you're eager to get back to a character, but there's always a reason if they don't show up for a while. The imperfect nature of the narration (as in each chapter progressing chronologically, but only giving you insight from 1 character's perspective) is like the best part of the book over more generic fantasy offering.

That would be + Show Spoiler + Daenarys, and she definetely appears within the first 300 pages of the next book, as do her dragons. There just not that important in the story at that point because their like the size of dogs.

Plus it introduces a lot of new characters that you have no attachment to yet which feels a bit weird.

You would think that once you get to the point of Arya getting hit on the head of the axe you would think no death would surprise you. However, with the red wedding just happening and then that Arya chapter immediately proceeding it, it left me with the empty pit in my stomach and I thought I would just give up on the books. I was just in shock leafing through the rest of the pages (well... I was on my kindle... not sure how to term "leafing through the pages" on that) not daring to believe what had happened actually just happened.

Am I missing out on anything earth-shattering or engrossing by skipping them? I agree with that. Bran really bores me, I feel like it might be cool in the sixth and seventh books but as of the last one I groaned every time there was a Bran chapter haha. I actually really liked AFFC, the Greyjoys are pretty legit.

For example, 'Feast for Crows' was in two separate paperbacks.

Now I'm hyped as hell for it again just when I put the books to the back of my mind. It was a very good chapter though without going into spoilers - wraps up some stuff and leaves a lot of foreshadowing + Show Spoiler + "Arya"s copy goes to the wall now and will end up finding Snow dead... plus the banker might not get safe passage - who knows how hostile the new Lord Commander will be

I have been reading the books quite fast so it seems as less a hold for me than the people who waited for the book for years.

This, which is a shame because I'd love to support HBO (I'm buying the DVD's, but I'm not waiting until they are released to watch the show). I just can't justify buying cable and then a further HBO package just to watch one show. I wish they would get with the times and offer an online pay per view or something. I'd gladly pay as the books were amazing and I loved the show as well.
