George is a very slow writer even at his fastest, and there is nothing saying he won't run into problems with this book either. It will take him atleast 2 years to write the book, prob around three. And that's at his fastest pace.
Afaik he is gonna take a few months break, then work on a dunk and egg story as well as a the companion book about the world asoiaf. I don't think he is even gonna start writing it this year, but we can hope, i guess. Then we have the actual editing and printing process when the book is actually done. that will take a few months too.
Hope for 2014, but that would be a miracle. Im gonna be omptimistic and predict 2015.
He's not that slow....
He wrote a massive, massive book over the course of about 6 years. Have you read his blog post about writing Dragons? He added at least a hundred pages even in the slowest years. Most of the time it was several hundred. Even when he was pushing back Dragons' release date in 2010 it was because he was adding more to the book, not because he was stuck.
Not to mention that he already has hundreds of manuscript pages pumped into the next book from chapters that were cut from ADWD.
Also don't forget about the "myreenese knot," a major writing block/plot hole that took him a long time to iron out. I would think there wouldn't be such a problem with that in the next book, since he'll probably still be writing out the plot that he worked out in his head for Dragons.
Anyway, I am optimistic myself. 2013.
Yes he is that slow. Even self proclaimed "that slow". Also, i forget nothing!
He still hadn't resolved the meereneese knot in 2010 when he last commented on it, so we don't know when it got resolved. Im not convinced that it even is resolved. Fans have done estimations and try to calculate how fast he wrote some of the years. Sometimes the average was like a few pages every month. He has his bursts, and sometimes it's painfully slow.
He has commented himself about how long time he reckons the remaining books will take to write. IIRC he said 2-3 years (or maybe it was 3) i don't remember exactly. Anyway the first books took like 2 years to write, but the story is much more complex now, and according to himself he has become more and more a perfectionist. He just won't write at the same pace.
Long time fans of this series (not me but others) will laugh at your optimistic estimations. He had tons of stuff for dance as well after he was done with feast, that wasn't much of an indicator. And who knows maybe there will be a new "knot" in the next book.
2 years is NOT a huge time to write a book. Even JK Rowling had bigger gaps while writing the Harry Potter books. And they are laughable in comparison. Every asoiaf book is like 3 normal books i terms of size and 10 in terms of complexity.
That being said... he hasn't even started writing a winds of winter... He has a companion book to write first, a dunk and egg short story, a game of thrones manuscript, all the signins and promotion to do, and probably whole lot of other projects, as well as a well deserved vacation. Then, when the book is finally done, it takes a few months for the book to go through editing and printing.
Lets say he starts to write a winds of winter for real starting January 1st, 2012. He writes at a lightning speed and the universe conspires with us so that everything goes smoothly, it takes him 2 years to write the book. Plus a couple of months for editing/printing and one or two months extra for w/e. We're looking at a mid 2014 release at the EARLIEST POSSIBLE.
And that's just not likely, given the variables we have to work with.
He already has chapters done for the next book, so if writing hasn't "started" yet, he at least has some material pre-made to start off of.
I might just be optimistic, but I honestly think we can see this book in 2013 or before.
I also must add to the others saying that Hot Pie (and Gendry for me too) were amazing characters that I seriously want to see again. Just think about this kid, he makes boss ass food, and has possibly killed a person, and he's like....12 or something. He's straight up awesome.
Also, I really don't think Gendry's story is done....I feel like him and Berric and Thoros have some more parts to play.
Also, Nymeria and Ayra WILL reunite eventually, but I feel while she was still in Westeroes running away the wolf dreams were just to show how brutal this child would become, taking joy from ripping animals and men limb from limb. I don't think she had ANY idea what the wolf dreams were. Nor does she have any idea she's a warg.
Once she gets trained real good, and learns how to change her face at will, she will return to finish her list, and in that process she will find her wolf, and gods help anything that gets in that monster's way.

As for that game, it looks like it could either be absolutely terrible, or one of the best things ever. Time will tell.
Oh and there has been a reading from winds of winter, so I really don't think it'll be much later than late 2012 or 2013.......
Oh
My
God
Winds of Winter, December 21 2012. That is when the world will end.
WTB Time Machine.
I just hope the man actually manages to finish the bloody series before he dies.
DUDE! Don't say that. The Wheel of Time series is absolutely killing me already. I don't need you to jinx another one of my favorite series into a delayed oblivion.
In some ways him dying was better for the finishing of this goddamn series, because sandserson writes at a ridiculous pace
Jordan spent at most 2 years pr. book, and him dying delayed The Gathering Storm by 4 years. The last book would at worst have been out at the same time as it will be now, but probably be better written. It's not that I dislike Sanderson's writing too much, but it doesn't feel right at all for WoT.[/QUOTE]
There was only a 4 year gap so I don't see how him dying delayed it by 4 years. What certainly helped was that sanderson was committed to getting it FINISHED. Jordan may have wanted to wrap it all up but there was no end in sight even if he wanted to only publish 1 more book

All I can say is: don't be like me and blow through all 5 books in 2 weeks. You will feel empty inside when you realize Winds of Winter won't be out for another 2 years at least. Take your time and savor every moment (ideally, take 2+ years to savor them).
I'm still expecting GRRM to extend the series to 8 books. I just don't see how he can tie a lot of threads that he's created in 2 books, especially going by his recent ones. He has promised that the remaining chapters would move along quicker and focus more on central characters/plot, but even that doesn't leave much room to fully develop and close the plethora of storylines & viewpoints. I honestly don't mind it as long as the story is told right and in full. Let's hope he's motivated enough to close it out without dragging it on for too long. The wait for ADWD almost killed me

Yeah...the only thing I have an issue with is all the shit he's introduced in just the last book alone. What the hell is the point of bringing in another Targaryen? That's another huge storyline that he now has to resolve -_-. There was already a shitload of characters. The books are pretty huge compared to normal novels so it might be possible to get it done in 2 but in a way that's satisfactory? Seems unlikely....oh well as long as he puts them out in a reasonable amount of time he can keep going till 10 as far as I'm concerned lol.

Lol. You realise Eddings actually plagurises himself. He has about 8 charactors and he just renames them. And you know it's true. He steals whole chapters from himself.
I just had to requote this for its ultimate truth. Eddings has literally written the same novel 9 times.

Agreed. Going at his current rate of plot resolution, we'll be done by around book 15. :p
And I actually really liked ADWD as well, so as long as he keeps up the quality, I really don't mind.
Just started reading a Dance with Dragons! Seems to live up to the level of awesomeness of the other books but i have only read 3 chapters so can't be certain ^^.
Man if i finish the book this month i have a feeling i will have to wait for a loooong time for the next one. Hell I waited years for this book
Random thoughts on everything so far, after having read ADwD. + Show Spoiler +
The book was good, the wait's going to kill me. I can only see the books as getting longer, not shorter, and I'm starting to fear for certain characters.
Jaime, for instance, is looking pretty screwed. I'm also... pretty sure Brienne was hanged and I'm unsure how she showed up for Jaime, and I swear if ZombieCatelyn kills either of them I'm going to be very upset. Hopefully Brienne showed up to save Jaime from her or something, because I'd hate to have a good character die to a vengeful wraith. Especially a wraith that targets the wrong characters.
Theon. I hate Theon, and I like Theon. Of all the characters he's one of the most human and he's an awful dick but he felt guilty about the shit he pulled. He's already ruined, I don't think he needs to be killed or anything. Continuing with Greyjoys, I hope their dumb horn ends up failing, Asha is awesome, fuck Victarion and fuck his brother.
Arya needs to return to Westeros. I could probably write an entire page of what I like about her and dislike about her arc, discuss just how much of a sociopath she is, but ultimately I just want her to go back and stick some people with the pointy end of Needle. I also want to know what Jaqen H'ghar was doing out there.
Dany. I liked her earlier on, her attempts to rule are annoying and I know Martin is just trying to show an inexperienced girl trying to rule is maybe not the best idea but she'll become a good leader and an awful person. That said, I don't like her much now and I really don't wanna see her on the throne, but her dragons will probably be pretty good at killing zombies. I'm tired of her though and I actually hate her whole perspective of being the rightful ruler of Westeros. I kind of want to see an end to the Targaryens.
Jon Snow isn't dead, we all know it. Whether it be by worging into Ghost or Melisandre, who was already a badass by Red Priest standards and is actually MORE powerful at the Wall, while zombiecatelyn is powered by a subpar Red Priest. Jon will be back. Not sure what he'll be up to though I guess he'll have a chance to be free of his vows to the Night's Watch. I also want him to be AA.
Tyrion is always a pleasure but I don't care about his new dwarf companion at all. Seriously. I also hope against hope that he gets to ride one of Dany's dumb dragons, but I know that's impossible.
I want more Starks in general. Hopefully Davos puts Rickon back on our radar and Bran gets more POV chapters while he's doing his greenseer thing. I used to hate Sansa even though I thought she'd be the relevant political character from the Stark lot, but after all of the Littlefinger shenanigans I like her kind of. I also kind of like Littlefinger. I hate some of the things he's done but he's such a snarky bastard while he's doing them I can't help but like him.
Sam needs more chapters and soon. Old Town is up to some crazy stuff and we got absolutely nothing about it. This entire area needs to be explored more.
I was going to write more but then I realized I'd never actually stop and I don't really want to proofread a giant wall of text to make sure it flows well and makes sense. Anyway, I'll just make due with checking GRRM's not-a-blog and pondering the fates of Robert Baratheon's various bastard children.

You're wrong
As I said before, he had even more done after the release of affc, and look how that turned out. He has reportedly 4 chapters pushed back to winds of winter, aproximately 100 pages. Thats nothing. Besides 4 chapters done, does not mean 4 chapters done. Martin rewrites chapters ad nauseum
I posted a very logical and reasonable timeline wich was very optimistic i feel, and people just ignore it and say they "believe" lol. Every circumstance + experience + martin himself points to the contrary haha.

One thing that made me unsure whether Aegon was always a part of the story is that in the first book/TV series Varys says some things that make it appear he's unaware of Aegon's existence when DWD says that he's been part of the plot to save/re-crown him since before Robert took the throne. Anyone else noticed that or seen it resolved elsewhere?

No mention of Young Griff/Aegon?! I was extremely disappointed when Dany decided not to leave Mereen so she never met her nephew D: I'm not sure what I want him to end up doing, maybe get a foothold on Westeros and have Dany come and take the rest with him (but that would never happen, too simple and too happy D: ). But I have to say I look forward to the Dany chapters the most to find out what happens (I don't think Martin could kill off Drogon or Dany right now, but would probably be more angry if he killed off Drogon. It would be way cooler of Drogon became a Huge and uncontrollable/vengeful dragon that fucked shit up all day and night.). But we have to wait years to find out - fuuuuuuu.
