You know what I kinda like about these books? A lot of the time I get really annoyed at super-human children characters in books/movies, snubbing their noses at the adults and being generally annoying as fuck in their infallability.... Well, the important 'kid' characters in ASOIAF do a lot of the whole lot of heroic shit, but they also do a whole lot of things that really betray the fact that they are... well, kids.

User was warned for this post I don't understand the warning here. but to answer your question, + Show Spoiler + Robb's death didn't actually hit me very hard either. I think one of the main reasons for this might be that it was spoiled a bit early, but I guess I never felt a huge connection to the character. This imght be becasue I was expecting death for a long time, however. There was so many things forshadowing his death, especially near the Red Wedding. RIVERS DONT PURR LIKE LIONS UNLESS THATS A SECRET MESSAGE. On September 08 2011 08:57 N3rV[Green] wrote: Guys.....something was just brought to my attention about Jon snow + Show Spoiler + His murder was Cersei's plot because of his helping Stannis. Lol can't believe I forgot about that xD. ETC. I don't think so. Her plot failed when she was taken by the Church. The guy who was supposed to lead the assault or whatever was also captured. This happened in AFFC. Edit: I have no doubt he (GRRM) will introduce less obvious players as well, the other houses of course. But also the maesters from Old town, the church of the seven and so on. Dude, yes. THE CHURCH. That's something that's been here the whole time, yet it hasn't done shit. I wonder if the Church of The Seven (or whateverthefuck its called) will have a major role in this. So far it's just sorta been there, in the back, being a church... but I've wondered a few times... The Old Gods - They have greenesers, wargs, Children of the Forest, etc etc... The Red God - They've got all tons of magix, and a fuckton of power in the (or at least some) Free Cities The Seven - ....nothing. They have no magix, they dont have any power other than the recently accuired armies, and I don't think that they can be too much trouble unless you're careless like Cercei and you let them fuck you. THEYRE PLANNING SOMETHING, I'm telling you. As for the kids, they're actually way too mature for their ages. Martin simply fucked up. Bran is fucking 8 or 9. When was the last tiem one of you saw an 8 year old? An 8 year old is a baby. I can accept that everyone here is more mature because of the setting and the whole medieval thing and shit just generally happening faster (married @13), and I'll accept htat some kids (Stark children) are forced to mature even faster due to their events... but Bran is just too wise and mature for someone wo's 9 (he's 9 by now, right?). It's not the biggest deal and definitely something you can look past, but still.

+ Show Spoiler + Robb randomly marries some random girl who looks at him sweetly, despite having already promised himself to someone else in a super important political move, and in general handles the situation pretty immaturely. Daenaerys is maybe a bit more mature than your average sheltered 13 year old, but come on - she lets her attempts at idealism nearly destroy everything, several times. Sansa was pretty immature until super recently, and she's the oldest. Arya isn't an example of maturity at all, but probably the one least likely to do something stupid enough to get herself killed (although the random killing of the singer was a bit unwise ).Yeah, the adult characters make bad choices too, but I feel they are not as often made out of naiveity as those made by the younger characters (Robb and Daenarys in particular). Oh and Jon. Come on. Biggest example of all. Bran, meh... He was pretty childish until he lost his legs, wasnt he?

Arya is a bit stuipd, but dude. Find a 9 year old right now. Now imagine her SLITTING SOMEONES THROAT IN COLD BLOOD. Its practically inconcievable, lol. No point in spoilertagging pre aDwD imo ;P

I recall Martin himself saying that he erred by making the characters so young. It's the reason why we never hear anything of Rickon, because he's just too young to do anything

except Rob, who was just pretty stupid about the whole marriage thing. Arya killed because she had to, Sansa is finally not being so naive because if she did she would blow her cover and get her and Petyr killed. Jon was voted Lord Commander and made what he felt were the best decisions in what was a difficult situation. + Show Spoiler + Isn't it theorized that his attraction + subsequent marriage to Jeyne was supernatural in origin? Basically, Melisandre burned those 3 leeches in order to kill the 3 other kings for Stannis. If we consider how Joffrey died, it seems that the effect could be QUITE convoluted. So basically, Melisandre's magic forces Robb to fall in love -> violate his oath to the Freys -> Freys kill Robb.

Hmmm, interesting. + Show Spoiler + That is true that he was destined to die through Mel's spell, but the manner of his death was his own fault. If for instance, he had not married Jeyne Westerling he possibly would have simply been killed in battle, or by disease, which would have been devastating, but not as devastating to the overall northern cause and thier campaign against the Lannisters. Cat would have still been alive, Edmure would still be Lord of Riverrun, the Frey-Lannister-Bolton alliance might not have ever happened and perhaps it could have spurned the army of the North and the Riverlands to fight with even greater ferocity, since then they would be looking to avenge their kings death. The north had Lords like the Greatjon that would not have let their cause fall to pieces upon Rob's death. So yes, Rob's death may have been destined to happen, but the manner of his death was caused by his own actions, if he had died in some other manner, without the whole Frey betrayal thing going down, it would have not been as bad for the Starks and the north as it is currently, because the Red Wedding happened.

It's the reason why we never hear anything of Rickon, because he's just too young to do anything I slightly agree with you about Jon, except his part in leading the defense of the Wall could easily have won him the good will of the Brothers who were stuck between two other flawed candidates without a way to end the deadlock. Bran didn't actually seem that mature to me. He's simply following Jojen and Meera because he has to in order to survive. About Arya... she's far from a normal kid. She's a sociopath. She showed signs of it from the very beginning, obsessed about swords and whatnot, and her experiences have totally cemented her mindset. She's a stone-cold killer by nature and nurture. The Ghost of High Heart was legit afraid of her "death aura", even though she was surrounded by the BwB at the time, all of whom were experienced killers. I think Arya's bodycount by series' end will be insane.

I like how the books are starting to toy with identity as a theme. The books have always been very character-based (as opposed to plot-based), so it's actually kind of surprising that this hasn't happen before. Still, I really liked how characters were given titles ("The Tattered Prince", "The Blind Girl", etc.) and not always names -- it's surprisingly revealing. For instance, notice how Quentyn inhabited many different personalities, and got a title for each of them (Theon also had this going on bigtime). Notice how Tyrion gave himself many names, but always remained quintessentially Tyrion, and thus never got a title. The wargs and the way they inhabit different bodies also ties into the identity theme. Jon's death is... interesting. I can tell right now that it's not going to go well for the perpetrators. Murder the person who protected the wildlings in broad daylight in front of that same people who, by the way, outnumber you? Yeah, that's gonna end well. I also think that we haven't lost Jon entirely, but I'm really curious to see how he ends up, as he was pretty much the only thing keeping the Night's Watch glued together in the presence of the wildlings. What will happen to it if he ends up as Ghost? Also, is Stannis actually dead, and his host dispersed? Ramsay seemed honest with his letter, but the whole thing happened "off-screen", so we're as in-the-dark as Jon was when he got the letter. Will the wildlings still march south? This is another thing that depends on what happens to Jon. Speaking of Ramsay, the Boltons scare the hell out of me. I really hope that they get what's coming to them -- they've pretty much taken the place that the Lannisters held for the first few books. Roose is basically Tywin with less of a soul. Also, we had better fucking see Valyria through a character's eyes by the time this series ends. Everything going on around there seems way too damned cool to leave alone. I thought for sure we'd see Victarion end up over there, but it's looking more and more like he's going to be supplying Dany her fleet.

More thoughts on the red wedding and things leading up to it. + Show Spoiler + While Arya is on her way to the Lightning Lord Beric she wakes after a wolf dream and wanders toward sounds of talking. She comes upon a woman shorter than her by a foot but MUCH older who speaks of dreams she has had. I believe this short thing to be a wandering child of the forest and one of her dreams was a dead fish in the river with red tears or some such on her checks that opened her eyes. I think that she had a Green dream of the wedding. It was most certainly destined to happen. But also if I recall correctly, a man with a pink spotted cloak can only be Lord Bolten, who showed that this was in fact a Lannister plot of sorts as well. Oh boy I can't wait till that episode of the show.....people will bloody riot.
