I haven't watched every second, but has he done a single trick to actually speed up the run other than abuse the OP weapons? Maybe the way he killed he lake monster, that's it? I'm assuming i'm missing something then.
HL1 on the other hand is one of the most difficult and technical games to run so it gets a pass at the end.
Yeah, I felt the same about Okami on NG+ from SDGQ, just running around and spamming exorcism slip L
Though I can still appreciate the skill that goes into it, just not my cup of tea.

It's been awhile but (iirc) the 'Ditman glitch' is a new game+ thing. It's a glitch that has something to do with inventory menu and drastically increases run speed.
I'm certainly not highly knowledgeable on RE4 runs (or the RE series in general), but typically runs are done ng+ when there are glitches that aren't usable in new game.
Edit: they just mentioned ditman in new game...i have no idea and i'm bad at knowing things apparently :p

I dont think theres alot of skill involved in about 80% of this RE4 run, apart from memorising the route (which is basically a straight playthrough). i dont really consider that a "skill" persay in a game like this as anybody can do it and im sure everyone has a game they've played so much they know the route just while reading this. its a different story for things like RPG's where you are memorising hundreds if not thousands of tiny details that make or break a run.
Not to take anything away from the runner, im sure it takes alot of effort and persistence.
I'd still appreciate it if it wasn't for theenglishman. God damn im going to be so disappointed for this MGS run when i turn it off 5 minutes in, i just know it.
EDIT: Just ****ing listen to him.
"-talks about RE4 information- I only know about gamecube though i dont know about PC..or wii...or any other versions"
So shut up and let the damn runner who knows about the version we're watching talk!

Well, at least you can barely hear anyone over the game sound, I guess? Or at least I can't
On a completely unrelated note, these crappy soft pretzels I'm eating really makes me miss having a place near me I can get good ones.

I told you guys having a grill indoors sounded like an awful idea.

All speedruns consist of one or more of the three elements: - skill - glitches - planning
Depending on the game, the aspects are different important. A SuperMeatBoy run is probably 90% skill! Don't know how the items are divided for a RE4+ run. Also I don't know which combination you are most happy with

In many games there is a lot of overlap between skill and glitches. Def more fun to watch those games as well as pure skill games (SMB, IWBTG etc).
Full planning games, like Pokemon, aren't as entertaining to me.

I found the Pokemon runs maybe the most entertaining but that's because Werster is a funny guy :3

Planning is less entertaining by nature, perhaps not to some but to the majority it is. The thing is, there are certain games that just require such a low amount of any of the three and it makes it look completely lackadaisical and boring. Even games that go full on with glitches that require no skill and arent entertaining fall into this category.
RE4 is in my mind one of these games, like i mentioned it requires effort and persistence like every other speedrun but not alot of skill/planning/glitches, which is where the game runs define themselves. RE4 just looks like anybody who put enough time into it could accomplish it easily which makes it boring to watch. You could compare most of RE4 to backstepping across hyrule in oot.
Compare that to pokemon / FF / RPG's that require almost no skill but involve a tricky glitch or two along with a metric crapton of planning, optimisation and then memorising it all (hundreds / thousands of minute details that will kill your run if forgotten) and it sort of puts things into perspective, It might be boring to watch but it sure as hell cant be done by anybody easily.
but who cares. GAMES! I love anyone who runs a game for AGDQ, attends, helps or watches...even....theenglishman <3. Also all the GAMES!!

I definitely agree these things are relative. A game like pokemon, while 99% planning, requires so much planning that it can dwarf lesser skilled games. And I agree, Werster is entertaining at times.

I think runs which are heavy on the planning (or even pure planning) can be really interesting, but the runner/commentators are much much more important to how entertaining it is compared to a pure skill run, where you just watch the game in awe.
Some of the best runs (imo) are the very planning heavy ones where the runner/commentators are constantly explaining *why* they made each of the decisions, and what the repercussions of not doing so would have been/what other options there were. I find that kind of incredibly detailed, well thought out and optimized run to be able to hold my attention for longer then watching someone do 800 pixel perfect jumps in a row, with the only depth to it being that they were all frame or pixel perfect.
On the other hand, if the runner/commentators are boring/bad at explaining then the planning runs can be incredibly boring because you have no idea why any of it is special.
