+ Show Spoiler + well... 45k for Magnus would be more correct, as he still has to pay his 10% penalty

They basically guaranteed themselves another 50k each with this draw today, but in return there is 50k less to win for whoever gets the title. + Show Spoiler + well... 45k for Magnus would be more correct, as he still has to pay his 10% penalty They appealed the fine and got it reduced to 5%.

If still level they play an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw will make the black player World Champion. and i wonder how would they decide who plays white?. is white reserved to Magnus since he is the current champion?.

Why would you not even give yourself a chance with the white pieces? Nigel Short said that if it were a restaurant dish, he would send it back to the chef. I guess the stakes are high enough for the players not to care, but it feels a bit lame to play a wch game like that.

I don't think one extra day of preparation makes a big difference in rapid. Also Karjakin relies more on preparation than Carlsen who is known for liking non theoretical stuff. We are not at the good old day when you could really benefit from finding that one novelty at move 29 of the Najdorf.. My only explanation is that Carlsen had a choice between drawing with the open Berlin or something similar, or going for the d3 that he has clearly studied and risk to run into Karjakin's fresh prep (since it has already played it in this match) in an opening that is roughly equal.
