But I still don't understand what happened. One pawn up in such tame position should oblige White to fight to the death, right?

Let's for one moment forget that all that counts at the candidates is qualifying. Andreikin was at the start about 50 points lower than the next best contender. If he finishes in 4th or 5th place is that perceived as a successful tournament for him or will everybody say: "It was Aronians to win and between the other 7 everything could happen."

If I remember correctly the last championship was thought to be Carlsens from the get-go because his rating was so much higher than Anands. If he finishes in 4th or 5th place is that perceived as a successful tournament for him or will everybody say: "It was Aronians to win and between the other 7 everything could happen." The commentators talked about it yesterday. They said that many players think that way in other tournaments, but here, the value of the first place is so much higher than in regular tournaments, so this logic only applies to a much smaller extend. In general though, this way of thinking seems to be one of the main point why some people dislike ratings. Also I think Carlsen was overwhelming favorite not just because his ELO was much higher, but because it was accepted that this was in fact reflecting his true skill. Also, what was Kramnik doing?

I respect Anand for being this good for this long but I kind of wanted to see a battle between the "new" generation. Aronian-Carlsen would have been great

Nothing exciting in seeing Anand again, after how disappointing he played against Carlsen before.
