it's nice to see opposite views, thanks mora

I go to a public high school and so far for me it seems that school is more about learning how to work rather than actually learning things I will need later in life. most of what I've studied is completely useless and like mora, I get mediocre grades because I don't do much homework.

I have a hard time doing work that I'm not interested in. If I get into it, though, I have fun working and feel proud of what I'm accomplished (too bad we don't get map-making assignments at school...). Regardless of the fact that I would seem to most people as a lazy, shallow person, I like to read, and I aspire to be a writer also. I think if I can get a job doing something that I enjoy, I will be happy.

I'm pretty young, though, so I can't say much.

In France, the more you go further through educational system, the more you meet arrogant retards I am in a so-called "grande ecole" and shit I dislike 80% of these "braunnosers" who where bashed in highschool and now are so happy to find other "braunnosers" to befriend with.
In Canada, I would say that population on the campus is a little more various.Btw you obviously are able to find some good friends among 40 000 students =)

I don't totally agree with that but with the following yes

education = money

simple as that

First my situation :
I don't need a lot of money, but I still want to live without having a constant fear of (not having) money. I have tried a lot of jobs, student jobs like in fast-food and shit like that, and I hated it.

I am(will soon) going to university mostly because I want to be able to do something in my future everyday life that isn't going to make me think : "FUCKING I GOTTA GO WORK THIS MORNING, STUPID BULLSHIT.", because that what I am thinking with fast-food jobs. I actually want to have fun//be interested doing my job, not watching the clock every 5 minutes. Also, with a interesting job that requires a university degree, I will problably have a salary big enough to do the live happily in my personnal life.

I am not going to school for random stuff on a subject .Right now I am in a CEGEP. I still have some general courses ( english, math, philosophy, the usual). I really don't give a shit about what I learn : I learn then forget .
If I want to know something about anything , I'll go check out wikipedia.

i don't know why, but as soon as i read that i just thought of Robin Williams' quote in the film Dead Poet's Society: "Medicine, Law, Banking - these are necessary to sustain life - but poetry, romance, love, beauty! These are what we stay alive for."

i guess just keep in mind that if you worry about schooling to the extent where it's all that matters, you really haven't learned that much

I agree with Legendary on the point that while the technical difference between an 85-90 and 95-100 is slight, the social difference is huge.

we study and learn in order to move the world, not with a fulcrum and lever, but with the power of our minds and inventions. just keep in mind that nothing in life will be handed to you for free. study hard! work hard! become a captain of industry! better society! just think where we would be if Edison decided to go out and get drunk instead of invent the lightbulb.

I don't really understand how this initial post has sparked constructive discussion - I have the [dis]pleasure of talking with him regularly and he's just being an emo donkey right now. What other skills does the OP want to "possess" - Starcraft pro hurr hurrr. The mere grammar and construction of his argument makes me wince. If you're smart enough, its not that hard to get top grades, suck it up so you can party at a top tier school. Social life? Bitch please, speak for yourself.

And Teroru, talk about sour grapes - just becuase you can "keep up" intellectually with a friend doesn't mean that Bill's arguments are therefore nullified. For every college student that is a dumbass, I can show you 100 rednecks. I strongly support Bill's arguments - you've said yourself you easily became depressed with high school (what the fuck?) and you're lazy, yet you have the audacity to talk shit about college students?

All in all, this post along with the other Kind Soul post the OP presented just makes me want to hurl. Get recognized becuase you contribute absolutely nothing to society? Get a grip, you're meaningless unless you imbue your life with passion. If your idea of being happy is dicking around to eventually work a mediocre job for 25 years, then congratulations - you're like the other 99% of America!!!

I don't believe education is the end all, but I think that most of society is too dumb to make an impact without higher education.

i think most people gets it by now that studying your ass off in school is not really just for learning. Its a process of selection where people with the nerve and mental strength will excel. Thats the kind of talents we need in today's world, especially in asian countries where jobs are not plentiful. We all hate it but its just the god blessed fate that we all have to put up with. With the spread and developemnet of science right now, who knows what kinda of shits people have to study in the future just to be literate.

Sometimes i just felt empty. This whole school thing is not suppose to be about competition and such. But it is. There is no other way around it. If people don't appreciate the trivial hardship associated with secondary school how the hell are they going to cut it in jobs that matters?

Even so, the process is flawed, how many good graded but unattractive people have you seen that can't get any job except a lowly white collared clerk?

Hey Teroru, sounds like you got bored with school because you were too smart... if you were in my country they'd bung you in with the top 3% of kids your age and teach you stuff 4 years over the norm. I've taught those kids before, I think the system's a pretty good one. A lot of them were "problem kids" before they got drafted into the programme though, because they were bored with school and told the teachers that to their faces =)

Education is never wasted. Studying sometimes is. Studying is only a part of education. I have a degree and I've never regretted it. I really learnt a lot while studying, and I got a real education. But I don't feel the need to do an MA, at least not yet, because I don't think I'll get the same level of education out of it. It's probably nothing to do with the MA, it's probably me being at a stage in life where I wouldn't be able to fully appreciate it.

Nevertheless, getting a degree or an MA or phD is a real achievement that challenges someone's mind. My girlfriend's dad was making derogatory remarks about further education because her sis wanted to do her phD. The usual stuff about how you don't need to study so hard to make money, getting a phD is a waste of cash, you can't get more pay based on that etc. etc. I told him he was missing the point. It's a midn thing. People do phDs because they enjoy learning, and because they want to challenge their minds. They do it because they can.

Needless to say, he didn't listen...

But hey, if you look at many, many families across the world, especially in Asia, the first member of the family to get a degree is looked upon with great respect, and everyone who contributed to his/her university fees feels that their effort has not been wasted. It doesn't matter what the degree is in, or where they placed in class. The point is not what the degree leads to, but the fact that for the first time, a member of the family has been given the opportunity to study, and has had the drive to succeed.

If you see the faces of these people during graduation, you'll never feel that a university degree is a waste of time or money.

Nonsense. Exalted really is that cool. Kim, the girl who he liked wrote him this university application, and her delicate admiration obviously oozes out of the piece:

For the asinine readers, I shall explicate myself in a more facilely translatable manner. I am a completely normal prodigy who is smart, good-looking, and everything else. I have a good life, and everyone admires me, especially the teachers. I don’t get straight A’s, but I did skip grades 1, 3, 5, and 7, so by the time I graduated high school, I was only 14. I grew up in the highly-sophisticated state of New York, and graduated in a well-known (awesome) high school there called Lameson High. Don’t ask any of my classmates about me, since they’ll most likely refer to me as a “nerd.” This is not so, although I was most obviously the smartest and youngest in the class (as well as the best looking), which all of my classmates are indubitably jealous about. I would have friends if I wanted to, but they’re all imbecile simpletons, or, in their own language, jerks. Also, I might have gone to college in Harvard or Brown, but I decided to wait patiently instead. I don’t want to miss out on all the secks, and going at such a young age would definitely be a total social disaster!

So (after being a grocery boy for a year at my grandma’s, due to a disagreement with my dad over college issues) I decided to move to Taiwan to continue my education at Chiao Tung University. (It’s top 4; I would have liked to go to top1, but one of my aunts lived closer to this one) Although my father is Taiwanese (I lived with him before going off to live at my grandma’s, as my parents are divorced) I know very little mandarin, since I had a sophisticated, American-based education. However, after one year of college in Taiwan, I had some trouble talking to the local girls, and therefore began to take mandarin as one of my courses. This was a harder subject than I thought it would be, so using my knowledgeable mentality, I decided to get help from a girl online who was bilingual to help me translate. She must have had the biggest crush on me, for she seemed to help me as long as she had me repeat the vowels “I O U” to her. I didn’t even know what it meant, but I didn’t even want to bother to find out what those silly infantile internet phrases were used for. However, I was very flummoxed as to why she stopped talking to me when I told her I didn’t want to fix her computer virus when my friend that I introduced to her “gave” her one. It wasn’t even his fault, since the virus was automatic. She really shouldn’t blame him for her own mistakes as to being as stupid as downloading it in the first place. But I really shouldn’t blame her; she’s a girl.

I do strongly believe that girls are extremely inferior to men. In fact, I have several encounters with girls to prove that they do…”totally suck.” There was this one time I was in freshman year (I was 11 back then) and I felt like I had a crush on a girl. She wasn’t that pretty, but I must admit that she had a nicely sized bust. I didn’t stalk her or anything, but just by looking at her I could tell that it was around 32.3194 D cup. She was an awesome flute player, and that went really well with my magnificent piano skills. (I hate piano with passion, especially after I was rejected to this music school) Although I was at the tender age of 11, I was already what you might call “sexy.” With my thick, Harry-potter like glasses and “uber-sexy braces” girls everywhere were digging me. But I wasn’t going to just respond to any girl. Just this one. This girl made my heart beat faster, the way it did when I watched the TV series, Lizzy McGuire. I decided to bring my SAT book to a school party, and instead of going for the girl, I waited for her to come to my sexy self. I waited, and waited, and waited. I KNOW she was shooting glances at me, but I had to keep my cool and concentrate on my book. However, she must have been so intimidated by my brainpower that she didn’t dare talk to me. This proves it. Girls are stupid; all of them are. All of them were too intimidated by my perfection to even dare to come near me.

Enough time is spent here in Taiwan. It’s time to go home. Thank you, patient readers, for accepting me into Princeton University.

Schools in America do jack shit to educate children.

Anyone who really thinks that trying extra hard in school in America to get into a "good" college is important is most likely a dumbfuck.

School is, 9 times out of 10, about one and only one thing, making sure you get a degree which gets you a good job.

Sometimes in school it's possible to acctually learn something, jump on those opportunities.

Otherwise your only job in school is to get a 3.0, and trust me, it isn't hard. For 3 years of high-school I did work that was so below lazy that I acctually only got a 2.7 average. This year I'm still doing practically nothing but I'm doing just a bit enough more to have like a 3.3 GPA for this year. And it's still no effort at all.

Unless a school extracurricular is something like a sport you're into, don't fucking join them unless you're trying to pad your college resume. Which isn't that important because no good college will consider your extracurriculars as much as they consider your grades, and as long as you have the magical 3.0 or above you're in.

LegendaryDreams is absolutely 100% right. People who devote themselves to high school are pissing away their lives for absolutely nothing.

Two exceptions to this:

1. If you KNOW you want to get something like a University of Chicago economics degree you need to get your shit together and work out of necessity.

2. Don't fuck around in college.

EDIT: To all the people who picked up on the obvious, for three years of high school I basically fucked up. Part of the reason I write this is because of that experience, because I'm doing almost no work this year in comparison to the other three and I still have a 3.0, which proves how amazingly easy it is to get one.
