But man I do feel for the guy who did it as well... How sick is that?? What a shitty life it must be... and guess what; shitstorm ahead dude. On the other hand, I heard Obama on the radio today saying those crimes would be avenged/wouldnt go unpunished or something like that... the thing is, you cant execute him 15 times for what he did nor can you bring back the dead by doing so... maybe if the guy was sick in his head or something, he wouldve needed psychological help instead of a lethal injection once he clearly showed how insanely fucked up he was... imho: prevention > retaliation

I doubt his life was that bad. I was pretty much one of the poorer kids at my school which is saying a lot because almost every single person at my school was loaded (as far as I know).

I think it would give more to put him in a mental hospital and use people like this for studies rather than locking them up in a prison or giving them the death sentence.

Obama had to comfort those who have lost their loved ones by saying the crime will not go unpunished, the losses of life will not go unavenged. It's likely that the shooters are insane (one person might still be at large), though we still need to wait for a trial to determine guilty or not guilty, but how exactly do you explain that to those whose lives were just turned upside down? This sort of premeditated crime reminds me of all those stories on reddit where the government spends a lot of time and effort tricking people already inclined to violence to buy fake training and weapons and then get arrested: well this is what happens when one group escapes the net There's no way these people are ever leaving prison or a mental institution. Good fucking riddance.

This being said, I was leaving the theaters last night when people started packing in for the Dark Knight Rises. I'm kind of a sick fuck too, so I sometimes think about crowds in terms of potential fatalities if such things were to occur. You could hardly even move in the lobby, and I wondered for a second why theaters aren't protected like malls, schools, and airports are.

Schizophrenics may or may not, because it is an illness with an amazing variety of possible behavioral outcomes. Sociopaths do not necessarily want to be alone, they can be anyone from a complete loner to the most popular person around.

(i only know because one of the guards is this massive prick who likes to act like he is some Navy seal badass with the hair slicked back and the sunglasses on indoors and trying to impress people n shit)

They cannot put the relative risk of things in perspective, they have an emotional reaction instead of a rational look at probability. When an event like this occurs in one place in one year it gets reported nation wide for days, and so people fear it. They don't report the hundreds or thousands of people who die in car accidents every year and so people don't fear it. The odds of something like this happening to you are so miniscule that the possibility should not even enter your mind when you go out, and it certainly does not justify avoiding a place or activity. The fact that this shooter actually picked out a particular event that was already sort of on the news (I think it's safe to say that TDKR was one of the more anticipated movies of the year, regardless of its merits) adds all the more infamy to it. I can see all kinds of sick jokes being made about this in the future, but this is definitely not the time for such ugly humour. Also, I don't mean to belittle the serious tragedy that occurred here, but as a Nolan fanboy and movie fan in general, I do wonder if this will affect TDKR's box office results and movie attendance overall for the next few months. There might be a similar effect to the post 9/11 situation with air flights - my school Washington DC trip in 2003 was cancelled because of an event that occurred two years earlier, for example. Clearly, the most serious ramifications of this tragedy are first and foremost the victims and their families, and second, the issue of guns and gun control. Farther on down the list, though, it's curious to wonder what effects this tragedy will have on the movie industry.
