Greetings TeamLiquid, This thread is about Alcohol in all of its glory. Let's try to keep that nasty "alcoholism" talk out of here if we can. This is not a thread to discuss whether alcohol is bad for you or not, we know it kills your liver, leads to drunken rages (in some people) and is addicting.
On a lighter note, what does TeamLiquid prefer to drink? Personally I go for a nice crisp beer usually, hard liquor if I'm partying and wine if I'm in a bad mood, it's kind of sad though, I reach a sort of sad clarity about my life..ha.
Post em! Favorite drinks/reasons why. We can make this thread epic, if you know good drink mixes that you'd like to share, I'd gladly appreciate it, I'm always up for something new.
I'm currently drinking Budlight-Platinum, I gave in to the commercial advertisements and thought I'd try a sixpack. Now I'm more of a malt beer kind of guy but I figured I'd give Budweiser one more chance, I've been thoroughly disapointed in their standard lineup but I can honestly say that this triple distilled blend is actually VERY crisp and it doesn't leave a nasty aftertaste in my mouth.
We have a high thread, why not an alcohol one? Cheers!
I prefer plastic bottle vodka in a plastic cup diluted with whatever I can find around the house to migrate the terrible terrible damage vodka does to my taste buds
My dad used to drink cologne back in the day because it was cheaper to get drunk off of in Bulgaria. I'm sure it was super bad for you though. I'm a hard liquor guy myself, give me vodka or tequila and im happy.
terrible way to start the thread... bud platinum... really!? there are some fantastic american brews such as the Double Bastard, which is much more worthy of an OP beer
America has some amazing beers. The Oregon coast is packed full of world-class breweries. That's not to say there are bars that can hold a torch to those in Belgium. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Driftwood, out of Victoria, BC. Close by, and easy to convince the local liquor stores to carry their product :D

I went on vacation to Denver, Colorado, and visited my friend in the town of Golden. They have the most awesome brewery ever there, Golden City Brewery.

When I drink Hard liquor mixed drinks I always go with Grey Goose Vodka as well, screw drivers are nice. I was introduced to "the hurricane" Last night, it's rum based and I hate rum, however, this one was amazing. I think it was created in Miami if I recall correctly.
For me it goes on vodka, vodka and beer.. and beer. It may sound kind of lame, but i drink mainly to get drunk and enjoy the feeling and the change it brings me :D There are only a few alcoholic drinks i enjoy the taste of, it's beer and martini!
I love vodka, because it simply have no real addition but the innevitability of alcohol, are easy to mix, and are cheap (by the way, in Norway 1 liter of vodka costs about 90 dollars) in comparison to others.
I honestly wouldn't touch alcohol if it wasn't for the purpose of simply tasting it or to get drunk. I enjoy the social aspect of getting drunk with pals, and play games, or enjoying it for myself by seeing the effects close handed. It feels awesome!
Beer i drink simply because i think it tastes great, and is a great way of getting "socially" drunk :D
Basicly i like the feeling of beeing drunk, and i enjoy every moment of the process. So i enjoy alcohol, but as opposed to some, i don't really enjoy the taste of most of it. I really respect people who do however.
It's neither classy nor is it of fine taste! It's just the human nature of seeking weird mind things for me!

Seriously? $90? I can buy a 1.5L of Grey Goose for about $55 USD
Incorrect, that is a thread about being drunk, this is a thread slightly more refined, one based on taste and preference, not solely with the reason to get wasted.
make my own red wine....every year. 60 gallon French Oak barrel usually full of a blend of Californian Nebbiolo/Barabera. oh, make white wine sometimes too. usually Californian Riesling.
I live in Oregon (NW United States) so I get to experience a huge variety of amazing beer, wine, and spirits. This is one of my absolute all-time favorite beers. It is always good no matter the time of day, the weather, my mood, what band is playing, ect. There is another espresso stout from a local brew pub in town that is monster delicious. But stouts are not my go-to beverage when I am drinking a lot. It is too unhealthy (I generally have a low carb diet so a lot of carbs really fucks with me)
Instead, I go with the good ol Gin, Soda water, Lime. I can drink those all night and will wake up relatively un-hungover (unless I also opt to swing by the 24 mexican food place)

I honestly feel otherwise. You just need to live in the right places to experience the best beers. Come to one of Oregons many brew fests and your mind will be expanded by the wonder and delight that is the microbrew. All of Americas national beers really suck. Really really suck. Stuff like blue moon...that is meh at best. Windemer is getting nationally recognized and it has some good things going for it but still. Euro beer vs American beer is really like comparing 2 different styles and approaches to making beer. American beer is very experimental vs the mostly traditional European beer. I admit I have not had the joy of experiencing the slew of top-tier European beers but from what I have tasted and what coworkers have shared, I don't think there will be any beer in Europe that will absolutely blow me away. Sure, there will be fucking amazing beer but nothing warranting 5 'greater than' signs.
I pretty much hate any and all beer, in both your regular store beers and your more exotic ones, regardless of country or any other factors. I've drank enough for it to not be some kind of tolerance issue, they just all taste like bile one way or the other. I wonder sometimes if my tongue is just allergic to hops. I know such a thing is pretty heretical to say, but that's just how it is for me. I can smell the difference of two beers, and tell the difference between different grains, but that's about it. No matter what, beers and my taste buds just do not cooperate.
Liquor is kinda the same, but I can tolerate it if I mix it with stuff. I'll be able to tell the difference between shots of this or that, but I will never ever say "Oh, that burning sensation in my mouth and throat really tastes good." As with beer, I'll still drink it from time to time because I enjoy the buzz, but I will never celebrate the taste.
Unless it's in a girly drink. Give me a sour mix cocktail, a very manly daquiri, or some bailey's and I'm basically good to go. I can also enjoy a good wine from time to time, but only with meals designed to compliment them. A wine by itself, I can't really enjoy, but a red wine with some tunafish can be delicious. I'm not a wine snob so I couldn't tell you what's what but I've had some good experiences, at weddings or whatever.

It's true. 400 NOK for a liter :D Also the places you can buy anything else than beer is a special shop only located in some (but many) cities, and are open to 5pm and 3pm on saturday. I don't complain, but i find the differences in politics here interessting.
The weird thing is that i can go to denmark and get it for a fourth of the price at about any store .D

Beer. In Denmark we can drink from the age of 15, so we get used to drinking quite early.
I myself prefer Carlsberg. Tuborg is alright too, but not as good as Carlsberg imo. The local Albani Odense is really good too, so yea ... hmm beer ...
If anyone is looking for Vodka with flavor, Absolut Vodka is by far the best! It actually smells and taste exactly like what it's supposed to. Most stuff taste so obviously of synthetic chemicals n shit but this stuff is like like taking a bite straight from the garden! :D
Could anyone recommend me a good Whisky? Tried a few different ones but not sure of the names so dunno what to get

I Fucking Love Scotch!
Uhmmmm if you are looking for something on the not-so-wallet-rape side I reccomend Glenfiddich (if you really enjoy the really smokey tasting scotch) or Glenlivet (a little lighter on the taste, very good for newer scotch drinkers imo) 12 yr old. If you want to blow a load of cash, Balvenie 15yr is ~$100 and it is blissful. Honestly though, you need to have a pallet adjusted to drinking scotch. Reaching straight for the top is a waste of money and, more importantly, good scotch. Start with something simple, a recommended 12 year around $35-45 a bottle (in the states, it kind of varies by states but that is a good start) and pour it on the rocks. Cook up some nice red meat, maybe grab a cigar, and sip away.

You can drink on base at the age of 18, just not off base. This was instituted because a particular commandant of the Marine Corps found it ridiculous that a man can die for his country but he can't Drink for it.

i brewed my own beer once...came out really good! but for the cost involved, it really isn't worth it versus buying it. making wine is MUCH more cost efficient, assuming you already have the equipment, comes out to around $3 for a 750ml bottle. all this talk of wine makes me want a steak and a bottle!
Cidre mystique for just drinking, and jaggermeister for those times when you want to get drunk. Jagger tastes surprisingly good once you forget about the burn

red blue black or gold?
they all have qualities of thier own. basically black for value. red is good also. if youre rich get blue.

Why would you do that to good bourbon? =( If you're gonna mix with cola any whiskey swill will do. However, if you're going to pay extra for bourbon, get a good bourbon and learn how to appropriate taste/drink it and enjoy a whole new world of alcohol. Then again I suspect in Sweden its significantly harder to get a hold of good bourbon.

the notion that european beer is superior to american beer used to be true, but with the "explosion" of microbrews in the past decade-ish, it's no longer an accurate assertion. In fact, "european beer" and "american" beer are largely worthless terms, as they both encompass super rich varieties. belgian trappist beer is vastly different from british ale, or german weissbeer, or czech pilsner - and those are just some examples. And as americans have really taken microbrews to their liking, american beer nowadays is largely "whatever european beer they feel like making".
I also have never tried making my own beer, but frankly it seems very easy to achieve great results. I have two friends who have been making beer that pretty much matches whatever beer I can buy anywhere, and they've both described their brewing as very effort-less.

It is relatively effortless. You get a book and a kit from a brewery supply store (pretty common in NW United States) for about $80-90. You make 5-6 gallons at a time of whatever the hell you want. Reuse the equipment and spend about $30+ per new batch. All it takes is a few weeks. I've made hard cider, mead, chocolate stout, oatmeal stout, IPA, and a brown ale. The only one that was a little disappointing was the IPA. Everything else was utterly fucking delicious. There is a special magic to enjoying your own crafted beer.

For one of the best drinks, that aren't awfully common: 2 cl Midori (Or any melon vodka) 2 cl Cointreau 2 cl Sourz Pineapple Fill up with red bull or equivalent and add some lime. You may add more equal parts, obviously, or add some pure vodka on top for extra strength.

Probably Bailey's or something like it. That stuff's delicious.

Here in Canada the attitude towards American beer is so stupid. Canadians are really proud that our macrobrews are like .5% stronger ABV and there is a pronounced sentiment of superiority over how our shit beer is better than their shit beer. Yet the craft beer market in the States dwarfs ours massively. Here in Ontario I've only got a handful of go-to beers that are widely available, and there's only a few really great breweries.
And since this is the alcohol topic I'll plug the last beer I had, Flying Monkeys Netherworld coming out of Barrie, Ontario. Very drinkable hoppy dark ale at 6%. Mmmmmmm.
when i was living in london, i couldn't drink anything but cider, magner being my favourite. now, living in the north-east of italy, i would live only with prosecco (a very sparkling and usually bitter wine, typical of this area). another typical drink from this zone that i love is spritz, which originally was just white wine with a dash of sparkling water. in the last years this beverage spread over to i'd say most of the italian territory, with the add of, usually, campari or aperol. if we have to talk about spirits, i would go for southern comfort (you love it or you hate it, i know). i hate beer even though i tried getting used to it for years i've been a sad teen ahah.

I know Have you tried though in all honesty? I'm not a fan of Bud but honestly, this is actually very good. Arrogant bastard Stone IPA is very good if you like stronger beers.
yes I have tried the platinum and I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised. Much better than regular bud light

With all this praise for Bud Light Platinum, I want to make sure no one gets the wrong idea. It's really bad.
I hadn't even heard of it and a buddy of mine bought a 12 pack for us to drink last week. It'll get you drunk faster than normal Bud, but it tastes like you're drinking cheap, hard liquor mixed in soda water. Also, it's only 6%, which is higher than regular Bud (5%) but much lower than a lot of really respectable beers. There's a brewery near me that sells $9 half gallon growlers ($6.50 on special days) of an 8.2% double IPA that's really good, and another that has a 8.4% Belgian wheat at a similar price. When you factor in the higher alcolol content of such beers, Bud Light Platinum doesn't even have a very good drunkenness/cost ratio.
For perspective, I drink pretty frequently but not often to excess. I like good beer and spirits, but I'm not an elitist about it. There's nothing wrong with drinking some regular old Budweiser, MGD, Coors, or even PBR. I would never spend money on Bud Light Platinum. Hell, If someone offered it to me for free (at a party or something), I might even go out and spend my own cash on different cheap beer, rather than drink it.
There's a ton of great beer. Stay away from big industrial-macro-brews, most of the time, but the US craft beer scene is one of the best in the world!
Seasonal: Watermelon Wheat (usually any brand that has it in N.Y is great)
Polish: Tyskie, and Zyweic German: Weihenstephaner American: Dog Fish Head, Sam Adams, Michelob.
Great thread though, I really love to try different beers and the like, still searching for a favorite - this thread should help although that Watermelon wheat... idk if it can be beat.

slow self medication ?..... I have a very bad idea about alcohol ( besides the poisoning/violence thing ) so I quit around 4 years ago. Tequila was good tho, 2bad I almost killed myself drinking 15 shots of that thing ( was drunk, but not even close to a coma or whatever, after a while I found that some people may go into a coma after so many shots ) when i was 15. Beer ? I hate it, a lot.

My favorite would have to be boulevard brewery. I don't know if any of you guys live around the Kansas City area, but I love just about every beer they turn out, especially their pale ale.

I love girly drinks in general, hard drinks such as whiskey taste like shitty medicine, though vodka mixed with some juices can be quite nice, anyway, personal favorite must be "Caipirinha"(alcohol from sugarcane, tahiti-lemon, ice and sugar), I haven't had much experience with beers but I tend to drink either Stella or Heineken, mostly Stella.
Stella is crap beer in Belgium. Heiniken is crap beer in Holland.
It's all marketing that gives them a 'premium' label here. They're about .50/bottle over there. Look for local alternatives, you'll find blondes just as smooth, with a much smaller price tag. Great breweries are dotted all over North America, and most have sampler packs that include a few different styles. You might run into beers that are a little bitter, sour, dark, etc. for your taste... power through it. Most quality beers' flavour will alter as they warm up a little, and the last few sips always taste different than the first. I've had many beers that I didn't like at the first sip, and ended up loving by the end. Appreciate the diversity!

I have an answer for your question my friend! Brace yourself for this will surely blow your mind.
The reason someone would drink bud light, is the same reason someone would drink any other beverage.....because they like the taste! Yes, I swear it is true!
When I drink or eat something, I automatically know if I like it. I don't need to read a review in the paper or check out the internet to see if I like it, I just know right away.
Personally, as a man with quite a few years experience drinking, I'll stick with Budweiser. I like the taste and its not too expensive. If I want to spend a bit more I go with Heineken, man my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
But my favorite drink of all, which is a relatively recent development, is Sailor Jerry spiced rum. I never figured myself for a rum drinker as in my very early drinking days I was quite fond of bourbon, but one day my brother bought me a bottle of Sailor Jerry spiced rum for my birthday and that was that. Now I always have a bottle in the house just in case I feel like having a drink.

This is a man of my tastes. Just too bad that Absolut is (ironically) so fucking expensive in Sweden. Fuck this country when it comes to alcohol prices.
But yeah, pretty much every drink containing vodka, especially when it comes to getting drunk. Otherwise I prefer cider over beer and wine, Somersby is a favorite but I like fruit so most are fine for me. Can't stand Jägermeister (too sweet), but I drink most everything else. I've enjoyed the blue moon beers they taste great. shocktop i never bought anymore beyond the 6pack i had. I have an issue with pieces of stuff floating around that i can see. unfilitered beers should stick to dark glass, it turns many people off.

Agreed. When my buddies came back from europe they say that heineken was the cheap beer there (although it is still WAY better and has little skunk taste in europe). I live in Vancouver and the local brewery "granville island brewery" is amazing. Winter ale, honey lager, all of them are good.

I live in Vancouver as well.
Granville Island isn't bad, but they're kinda lax when it comes to QC. Doesn't help that they've been bought out by Molson/Coors now as well :/
Try some Driftwood beers. They're over in Victoria, but most local beer shops should have em, and some provincial liquor stores carry them. A non-intimidating start is their Farmhand Ale. Very smooth, while being quite complex and perfect for hot days. It really highlights the quality of the ingredients used compared to mass-produced mashes. I've yet to run in to anyone (even non beer drinkers) that didn't enjoy the taste.

Of course! Especially when the cheap blondes generally taste similar (or better, if you find a gem) to the big brands.
A good Old Style Pilsner (Molson) or Cariboo (their draft, honey and cream are all quite tasty, havent tried the pale yet) are great for more casual drinking. At 8 bucks a 6-pack, it's hard to go wrong (For those outside Canada, our booze is taxed to hell... $8/6 is about as cheap as it gets )
The best craft beer I've had though would probably Heavy Seas Loose Cannon or Heavy Seas Greater Great Pumpkin. All non-craft beers are beer pong fuel, in my opinion.
Alaska Distillery Vodka, preferably Birch or Maple Microbrewery IPA Belgium Wheat like Blue Moon (lol @ DjWheat and JP consumption in this community, love those guys)
Drinking this right now. I usually preffer stouts and British Isles style beers, but this is it for tongiht. This is a great local brew... look it up and order some. Their other great brews are Helles Lager, Chocolate Porter and Pale Ale (super hoppy beer).
This one is a refreshing orange, great with like sandwitches.

A Long Island Iced Tea is a highball made with, among other ingredients, vodka, gin, tequila, and rum. A popular version mixes equal parts vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and triple sec with 1½ parts sour mix and a splash of cola. Most variants use equal parts of the main liquors but include a smaller amount of triple sec (or other orange-flavored liqueur). Close variants often replace the sour mix with lemon juice, replace the cola with actual iced tea, or add white crème de menthe; however, most variants do not include any tea, despite the name of the drink. Some restaurants substitute brandy for the tequila.
The drink has a much higher alcohol concentration (about 22 percent) than most highballs due to the several liquors and the relatively small amount of mixer. Long islands can be ordered "extra long", which further increases the alcohol to mixer ratio.
Outside the United States, this highball is often altered, due to the unpopularity of sour mix[citation needed]. Long Island Iced Tea served outside the US is often made of liquors and cola alone (without sour mix), with lemon or lime juice, orange juice or with lime cordial.

I've never tasted a beer, wine, or liquor that didn't taste like shit to me. The only thing I drink is mixed liquor. In other words, I have no standards or taste and I don't "take pride" in what I drink, the only reason I consume it is for the effects. I mostly drink neat scotch and bourbon. Laphroiag, Talisker, Old Pulteney, Highland Park, Ardbeg, Dalwhinnie Glenmorangie / Evan Williams, Elijah Craig

You're going to have to drink for more than one night to really get used to the flavor. I've probably gotten like about 9-10 times in the last year and it still all tastes like ass to me. It's got to be something you do on a semi-regular basis.

I mean, for me it took me a while to get used to it, but around... oh... 14 beers in I feel pretty comfortable with the taste. Then again I chugged all of them, I never really just sip or slowly drink (I'm under age so... would be stupid to try and extend the period where I could get caught).
And by the way, does anyone here not really mind the taste of vodka? Ya, a lot of people don't like beer at first (or ever). The drink you mentioned was made using amaretto, but you probably want to stick to simpler stuff at first. Rum+coke, vodka/cranberry, vodka/redbull or a screwdriver (vodka/orange juice) mostly just taste like their mixer (especially if you order them at a bar), so give one of those a try first. (this is assuming you are legal drinking age in your country obviously).

Second that on Deschutes, great brewery. Try the black butte porter.
For mixed drinks, I pretty much only drink Maker's Mark Manhattans and Sapphire Martini's, both with only a splash of dry vermouth. I enjoy a fine scotch from time to time as well.

One major problem is that 95% of what people drink at parties and what is served at bars is low quality stuff, mass produced to get people trashed. JackDaniels, Jose Cuervo, Smirinoff, and Captian Morgans are CRAP. A good whisky or tequila wont have that big ethanol aroma/flavour that makes people cringe after a shot.
Get onto google and read some reviews. Theres far more options out there than most people realize. A bit of research and a couple extra bucks can get you something light years ahead in quality.
However! It took me a long time to start enjoying the taste of alcohol. Some people never aquire a taste for it. Dont try to rush it.
(this is assuming you are legal drinking age in your country obviously).
ya i live in Canada
my sister got married in November at a pretty upscale hotel (some people actually saw Conan there at the elevator but sadly i wasnt there but they had pics) i tried a couple rum and cokes and a couple vodka and OJs didnt really like it but this thread has inspired me to keep trying and not give up

You should reconsider Jack Daniels. If you don't like whiskey, that's alright, but there's nothing wrong with Jack. It's nowhere near as good as a lot of stuff in the whiskey thread, but you could do a lot worse.
Also, if you're mix vodka, you're dumb to buy anything more expensive than Smirnoff. It's not perfect, but it's distilled enough to be relatively flavorless.
As a college student, it's always cheap beer to start, switching to cheap whiskey and coke after a while. I find Crown Royal too sweet, so at most bars that leaves Wiser's or Alberta Premium.
Haha sorry man, dont mean to step on any toes but I gotta be honest: I think JD is really terrible. Furthermore I think its a big reason most people dont like whisky, because thats the flavour that they associate with it.
And to clarify, I LOVE whisky. I have a post on the last page listing some of my favorites. Anyways, about JD:
I wouldnt have thought it possible to water down every flavour EXCEPT the ethanol, but the folks at jack somehow make that happen. The single barrel/Gentleman Jack bottlings are decent, but I would never serve the standard old no7 stuff to a guest, nor drink it myself. End rant.

Hey, take it easy man, this is an alcohol only thread
I like busch light, and if I'm feeling fancy I really enjoy absurdly dark ales. Like syrupy dark ales. It's kind of gross haha. My favorite liquor drink is gin and tonic by a long shot. I love the crisp and bitter taste it has with a hint of citrusy lime.

Their spring time cider tastes like pancakes. Glorious pancakes cover in maple syrup. You're more likely to make yourself sick form the sugar before you get drunk though.
my first beer tasted terrible but my sister and brother assured me that everyone hated it at first and urged me to keep drinking
it never gets better. beer always tastes bad. its just cheap and all your friends drink it. its the only reason any1 drinks beer at least in my opinion
Sweet ciders above all. Fizz, Koppaberg & Kiss. Spiced & dark rums with ginger ale / energy drinks are are delicious as well And tequila shots, don't really care about brands here.
Personal favorite:
Cheaper than Cpt Morgan but just as good:

my first beer tasted terrible but my sister and brother assured me that everyone hated it at first and urged me to keep drinking
i didnt drink that much had a couple bottles of beer, shot of tequila a couple shots taht i think was called a crispy crunch and a couple glasses of a drink i cant remember exactly what was, sounded like emmeretal sour or something like that but it never seemed to taste any better, since then ive had a couple bottle of beers but it still tasted bad and whatever drink theyve gotten me it always tasted bad even a drink at montanas called the smore that tasted bad but my sister insisted she couldnt even taste the alchohol in it
should i attempt to stick in it and hope i get used to it or am i just really sensitive to the taste and not going to get better?
Well. I have been 'trying out' beer for about 10 years now - still think it tastes absolutely vile. Now that I think of it, very few of my friends actually like it, so it's clearly not for everyone. You certainly shouldn't force yourself to drink something out of peer pressure.

How much does Stoli vodka cost in the US ? Here in China it's only $8 but Smirnoff (what an awful vodka btw) is $14...
Red Wine sometimes, only when I am alone during the weekends or with the right person Russian Vodka, to be specific Ruski Standard Platinum and Stolichnaya, with friends. Whiskey - currently Jack Daniels and Jameson, usually with the friend, sometime when I am in a specific mood. Beer - in Poland I used to drink during weekends and it was almost always good and expensive regional beer. Now when I live in Finland I drink Karhu III and Carlsberg. Alot. And everyday. Śliwowica (Slivovitz) - original Polish liquor made of plums - 70%, perfect for cold, cold Arctic Circle in Finland

Rochefort is too good. Last week I had the 6, 8 & 10. Pleasant week.
A favorite beer when I'm out drinking is Coopers sparkling ale though.
When it comes to alcohol, I drink pretty much anything, though the obvious favorite is beer, preferably dark ales and porters. Favorite beer would probably be Innis & Gun though, not all that dark, but intense flavor. If I want something easy to drink for a hot day etc, I would definitely go for something like Asahi superdry or Suntory premium malt, but asahi is generally not the same when bought outside of Japan (different breweries) and suntory premium malt can probably not even be found outside of Japan... Most scandinavian lagers work out as well though.
As for non beer, Cider is great (though not the English dry kind), drink that a lot. I'm not a fan of wine, but it's fine with a nice dinner. Wiskey is nice in small doses, or mixed with ginger ale if you want to get drunk of it.
I drink quite a variety of liquids, but for the enjoyment of taste (well 99% of time) and when drinking not at home it's just beer because anything else you can get is just rubbish or too expensive compared to what it normally costs (wine may be an exception here).
I like Baileys for my coffee in the morning (same effect as milk and sugar ). Good German or Czech beer (because that's what's available) Whisky (!) (especially Islay, Scotch, Japanese, sometimes Bourbon) Wine (not really an expert here but one I fondly remember was the Papillon), dunno which year though )
Stuff like this (no hard feelings) is basically a nightmare for me. + Show Spoiler +
And I can only urge everyone (who enjoys alcohol for taste) to at least once in their lifetime try a good whisky (and no Jack or John doesn't really count )
Not big on beer. Dos Equis (green bottle) is nice, though. Modelo Especial is okay, reminds me of Corona, but cheaper.
I'm a margarita guy. Homemade ftw. I'd be happy to share my recipe with anyone who wants to give it a shot. I prefer to use cheap tequila for margs, and here's why...
The subtleties that make premium tequila taste so great are easily lost when mixed with other liquids. A cheap, blanco (silver) tequila works great for margs imho. Don't waste your money on expensive tequila if you're making margs.
Patron is very popular (perhaps because of marketing) but it is worth noting that while it works great for getting you highly intoxicated, I do not find that it tastes anything like a tequila "should" taste (completely subjective, I know).
Edit : Forgot to mention how great Amaretto is. Disaronno is good, but sweet. Reminds me of Dr. Pepper. Marie Brizzard is very nice too.
" This Rum is a blend of many different ages of rum, repeatedly blended with fresh sugarcane distillate and then further aged. The final act of blending, the "toque" produces the finished product. Its retail price is set at $1743 per bottle"
I like some dutch pilsners like brand grolsch and hertog jan. Of the real beers i really like belgium beers, like la chouffe, leffe and karmeliet (and many others, but they don't come to mind.)

Also, a good Irish Whiskey is a fine drink indeed.
not much of a beer man myself.. its mostly in irish and scotish whiskeys.. though i've found a few nice and mild japanese ones. very good taste.. but its not as rough on the way down as many others
other than that i tend to have some "home made" Becherovka, and a friend of mine do tend to whip up a very nice batch of mead from time to time
So much fine rums/whiskeys and whatnot, wtf happend to all of you students who drinks crap alcohol like me? Anyway: Cheap, tastes OK perfect for a whole day of partying
I prefer local 'real' ales, it's what they're generally called around here anyway because they're ales brewed the old fashioned way. I vastly prefer sitting in the pub or in front of the TV with a pint than all this binge drinking stuff that goes on in England today.

I'm a sucker for cider and absinthe, not mixed together of course. Living in France we have some great cider in the north, and I can even find absinthe at the mall.
beer: basicly any german beer thats not too cheap. Wheat beer as well as cologne-brewed beer. It really depends on the situation, mood etc.
Whiskey! Cheap one only with cola, but when its a little more expensive I enjoy drinking it with friends during a little talk. I know that there is a huge variety as well but Im not experienced enough to taste the difference between scotch / irish and/or never compared them directly. I once tried whiskey from Japan. Interesting taste. And i love sambuca. Simply yummy. Nuff said

It depends do you drink to drink or to enjoy it? I only drink expensive stuff (mostly red wines) when I cook for a couple of hours for guest or family. If your goal is to get intoxicated then you might as well go budget.

Brewing beer is super easy but it often tastes weird.
Spring: vodka, pineapple juice, and either a fruit liqueur or seltzer/tonic, iced Summer: dark and stormy (Goslings dark rum and birch beer) Fall: whiskey sour, iced Winter: whiskey and apple cider, hot
When I'm in a beersy mood it's always some sort of dark-ish ale. Newcastle, Dundee Honey Brown, most flavors of Long Trail, that sort of thing. Shipyard Pumpkin Ale at Halloween. I don't understand the current fascination with trying to make beers as hoppy as possible, nor do I understand why anyone would drink light beer.
Wines I'm less particular about. Italian family = you always keep wine around. Some for cooking, some for having with dinner, some to drink on its own. Usually I'll cook with either Chardonnay or Cabernet. To have with dinner, I like my red wines dry (Sangiovese is the current favorite) and my white wines sweet (Riesling). Almost everything my wife and I cook is spicy, so sweet whites get a lot of action. Dessert wines on their own are wonderful every now and then, I'm currently most of the way through a port that reminds me of chocolate coated apricots.
Every so often I'll spring for a nice scotch. Every so often hard cider calls to me. Every so often I'll put some sort of fruit liqueur on ice cream. I don't do liqueurs in coffee. Nothing goes in coffee except beans and water.
I can't stand the taste of beer or any other alcoholic drink except for mead. I love mead, but even then I only drink it twice a year or so. Not too big on booze.

I mostly prefer Icelandic Brennivin. It is 40% and potato based with a kumen taste. Its is also called Black Death. Takes some getting used to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brennivín
I also like dark beer like (Belgian?) Leffe and (Danish) Jacobs. Best pilsner is (Icelandic) Thule or (Check) Urquel but I mostly just buy cheap German brands like Nobel (good enough lmtd) or Royal Unibrew and Carlsberg when I find them cheap.
I was in the states not so long ago and there are plenty of small microbreweries that make decent beer.
Is there any readily available beers I should try in England? I'm from the north east and want to try some different drinks. I can't stand the taste of the 'mainstream' lagers and drinks (I can't stand stuff like Carling, Carlsberg, Fosters, Stella Artois, tastes disgusting to me, haven't drank it since) but I love the taste of ciders and whiskey. Is there any beers I should give a shot?
You are right about pilsner in England. It is hard to find a decent one. It is the only place I drink Stella. Even Carlsberg which is a decent brand tastes too light and harsh in England. I mostly prefer some of the darker ones which still have little bit of bubbly (non forced carbon) when in England like Newcastle Brown Ale.

American Budweiser and foreign Budweiser are not the same, I believe.
Although I have never tasted the U.S. Budweiser, Budweiser Budvar from the Czech Republic is definitely a different beer and Pils and Dark taste absolutely AWESOME.
When I drink at a reasonable pace (i.e. taking my time), my preference is Guiness.
But when my aim is to destroy my liver, I prefer a Bear Fight. That's where you take an Irish Car Bomb and follow that up with a Jager Bomb. Yeah, Vienna is kind of expensive. When I was in Budapest I was getting half liters of decent beer in BARS for under a Euro.

Yes because there isnt any micro brews and there isnt every single type of beer available in the united states. Companies like budweiser get alot of attention because it's mass produced, markets itself accordingly, and therefore is cheap (cost of production, cost of marketing, and amount of sales due to marketing and low price). It's marketing is why it gets foreign attention for being the American beer. This does not mean there is not hundreds of types of beer in your ordinary liquor stores and thousands of local brews in specialty shops. I've probably only bought a 24 pack of Budweiser once or twice but I jump on the opportunity for some Granville Island (brewed in Vancouver). But even that does not compare to the hundreds of micro brews i got treated too at a local beerfest last weekend. TLDR beers the same all the way around. Theres high quality beers wherever you go. And let's be honest, if you're getting drunk off beer and you're into starcraft you're probably young and dont want to spent out the ass to get where you want to be (ie shitfaced), hence Budweisers success.

Ya, home brewing isn't that hard. I've brewed up a few batches so far (all-grain), and they have all been great. You basically make a giant cup of tea, boil it, cool it, ferment it and carbonate it.
If you guys ended up w/ a 12% beer, I would recommend a more basic recipe to start with. You probably needed high gravity yeast for that much sugar/alcohol. Make sure all your equipment is sanitized. You could also try brewing from extract first to get the boiling and fermentation processes down before having to deal with grain.
I drink beer (preferably imports, but Canadian beer isn't too bad as far as domestic beers go). One thing I really can't stand, much to my chagrin as it is so common at so many events, is wine. The bitter aftertaste of the tannins and the dry feeling that stays in my mouth for what seems like hours afterwards... not really my scene. Sucks, because all parties serve wine, all special events have wines, and chicks love that shit. I took a wine appreciation course once... didn't help.

Personally, when something tastes really bad to me I avoid consuming it. The question is whether the positive psychological image you have of drinking beer is sufficient for you to overcome the taste. If so, try to get used to it.

Generally people here are socially awkward people that drink by themselves and I'd guess only drink on rare occasions, like myself. Now if you were to drink only a handful of times a year why wouldn't you get something thats nice rather than cordial, sugar and alcohol mixed together?
Oh I guess that's right , never thought of it like that

Keep trying different types, but if you don't like them then don't drink em Gin & tonic is a nice option for when beer doesn't take, and gets less "zomg you gay" compared to say vodka cranberry. Some other suggestions for alkeyhol.
Myself generally dislike lagers, they tend towards blandness and boring taste.
On any night out I'd tend towards any of the following depending on mood: Baileys British Ales (whatever is on tap, Fullers is standard around here, recently enjoyed stuff from Darkstar) IPAs (Sierra Nevada being the most commonly available) American Ales (Stone, Dogfish Head, Brooklyn mainly available here) Belgian Ales Blonde or Brune (Leffe becomming more widespread, Delerium Tremens is cool too) Fruit Beers Traditional Cider (i.e. flat, not Strongbow) Guinness Porters (Fullers is nice) Imperial Stouts White wine (Reisling / Sav Blanc) Red Wine (Shiraz) Neat spirits would be: Hendricks Gin / Most single malts (Whisky) / Stoly Elit Vodka (to me more interesting than Goose) / Dark Rum / Cointreau Amaretto & Lemonade / Whiskey (Bourbons) & Coke Cocktails are fun too. Flaming Lamborghinis are a good laugh. B52 as shooter of choice. Old Fashions as cocktail of choice. Lychee Martinis are something easy to knock up for ladies visiting (Gin or Vodka + Dry Vermouth + Lychee juice (always have a spare tin handy + splash of bitters) Edit: just remembered some Sloe Gin a friend of mine made, it was crazy nice.

Some people just don't have the pallet for beer. I'd just say always be open to try new things, because hey maybe you'll find the exception to your rule. I wouldn't force yourself into getting used to the taste, you'll just spend a lot of good money trying to convince yourself that its better than the last time.
Not a fan of spirits, when I drink I prefer to keep it classy and just have a good time instead of enduring terrible taste, projectile vomiting and a killer hangover...
Bud Light... common nao I think that TL can do better than that. Not sure if it is sold in you area OP but Sierra Nevada's Hoptimum has about 10x the ingredients as that "beer" that you are drinking. It's around 14% so after a bottle you can feel it, if you can get your hands on it I would really recommend it.
One of the places I go has £1 spirits with 50p mixers, so me and a few friends decided to just try properly random concoctions. Malibu + Strawberry Panda Pop, it looks as feminine as a chihuahua in a hand bag but my shit it tastes fantastic.
though i am open to new alcohols these are generally what i like the most so far (there are various different hard liqueurs in there too that i have at parties but i'm never quite sure what those are xD)
and don't forget Alaskan distillery though i often have trouble ordering from them, being underage in america sucks :/
Well all this talk about delicious alcohol convinced me I needed to go out last night. Went to the local coffee shop (14 beers on tap) to try a blonde on nitro and Rogues dark IPA. Fucking delicious! Then a quick walk down the street to my favorite bar in town. It was thursday which meant $6 long islands. Even more deadly when its Sarah behind the bar (she does the deepest pours in the city). Now generally I can never remember what the thursday special is because...well...$6 long islands do that to your memory. 2 long islands do me quite quite well but I can never stop until I drink that 3rd one which is...well it just gets me to the brink of tolerance and physical ability to act rationally. So I'm on number 3 thinking "yeaaa sweet after I down this, finish listening to the band, then I can walk home. It's just the 3 Long Islands, I'm used to it". What I forgot about was the 2 pints I had earlier in the evening. Needless to say I made it about halfway home with plenty of cuts and bruises before some guys talked me in to getting a cab. Woke up, intense pain in the parts of my body that familiarized themselves with concrete, and I lost my phone.
Daaaammmmnnnn you TL thread. I blame it all on you. Anyone else have some silly stories caused by an overabundance of alcohol?

Haha you fucking nailed it man! Yes, the place is pretty fucking legendary. Monroe is great, I work right across from the Brew Station so beer breaks are pretty frequent.
As far as drunken teleportation goes, I mean your sense of reality is interrupted and suddenly you are in a new place at some different time with no conscious idea of how it happened. I would call that teleportation.

I honestly did not think this thread would become this popular. Thank you everyone for your contributions, I've actually penned down quite a few brews I'm going to try. Keep the thread alive, I get excited every time I click this page and see some new brew/war story.
I don't know why but I've just never liked beer that much. And even when I do drink it, I prefer the lighter types over the darker ones. It's like the complete opposite of what I should be liking.
My drink of choice though is usually whiskey, though any hard liquor will do generally.
When you are trying to get really drunk nothing beats drinking like 15 bud lights. Although they can't really be considered beer, maybe carbonated water with a little fermented piss inside.
But I also love drinking quality beers, there is a time and a place for all kinds of beer

The one drink I served the most (and this is probably sad to ppl that actually know drinks), was Barcardi Razzberry with Sprite and abit of grenadine 1-2cl, just for the color
This was extremely popular (sort of a drinks version of the mojito-cocktail) here. I never really liked it myself, alot of people did though, if you like really sweet drinks there's one for you
For me personally, im extremely conservative when it comes to drinks tbh -.- I take a gin&tonic over most fancy stuff, I assume you know how to make that ^^

Oh my gosh you have no idea how many memories this brings back to me. I went on a school trip to Costa Rica a few weeks ago and just came back; we worked in coffee plantations and sugar cane plantations and we lived with a Costa Rican family. We weren't allowed to have any alcohol, but of course, we did have some. Our family generously offered us TWICE una cerveza and we got to sample el Imperial! Greatest beer I've had so far! I loved that country.

oh god you drink like others work, hows ur liver/nose/belly and stamina? also: if you want to get really drunk try something with more than 5%, I assume thats the amount of alcohol you have in beer over there as well as here.
So I just had the best IPA of my entire life yesterday. It is from a local brewery called Flat Tail Brewery. Their beers are pretty good, I would say about average for the brewpubs in the area. They have one beer though called the Licentious Goat. It is an 8.5% IPA with a secret ingredient, Horny Goat Weed (does as the name implies, goat aphrodisiac). I generally am not a huge fan of IPAs but this one caught my attention. It has a a very distinct taste that comes on softly and lasts a while. You get a good taste of the hops and various other flavors that fade in and out as time goes on. This is one IPA that I can comfortably say I would drink all night. Generally I get fed up with how bitter IPAs are but this Licentious Goat is awesome.
On another note, I am really really sad because I am moving to NYC in a few months and I will be thousands of miles from my favorite pacific northwest brews. Anyone in the North Eastern US want to give me a few of their favorite local breweries?
Love a good red wine and vodka is my chilled spirit of choice. I worry sometimes that my drinking preferences make me a tad girly, but beard-stroking is a comfort that soon resolves that.
Been looking to try and find a good whiskey to get into too, but not quite sure what constitutes as good. All I've really had is Bell's and whatever cheap stuff I could get my hands on aged 15.

lol ya but in this situation "getting stronger" is actually getting weaker. unless its the weekend I will seldom have more than 2. its been like a tradition for me and my coworker/room mate. a beer or two right after work its the best time.

Dissarono, i find it mixes with everything. In addition it has cool commercials and the top of it is really fun to spin off.
I guess Tuborg is a somewhat average beer. But if you haven't had any of the drinks you should instantly go fetch everything needed and get yo' buzz on!

You should definately start off with something you like - and add a small amount of alcohol. If you like cola add a splash of rum (that was my first thing) - if you like sprite, fanta, juice you can add a doze of vodka to it. In alot of countries they even drink half/half wine/soda. You can get into it through small dozes. Like... You can start off by having 2-3cl to half a liter of soda. Next time go 4-6cl. Next time 6-8cl and so on. If you hit an amount you don't like just step down. If you actually hit 10cl/half liter you're actually drinking some decently strong drinks, so start off by mixing some "soft" drinks.
On May 14 2012 04:27 DisneylandSC wrote: What would be a good drink to start of with, when you have never really drank alcohol and you really do NOT like the taste of beer or whine? Suggestions anyone?
Ciders or the variety of canned cocktails (those gin/rum/tequila mixers) would be my suggestion.
Also, another one of my preferred drinks, that I forgot from my 1st post:
On May 14 2012 04:27 DisneylandSC wrote: What would be a good drink to start of with, when you have never really drank alcohol and you really do NOT like the taste of beer or whine? Suggestions anyone?
What beer have you had? There are TONs of different beers out there and some taste VERY different than the normal pilsner or IPA.
In any case, start small. It's been said before, and its worth saying again. Experiment. There are TONS of different flavors of alcoholic beverages out there. Even if you try one rum, and it doesn't taste good, try a different rum. I can't stand any rum except for Appleton Estates Reserve, for example.
As for suggestions: I'll second the suggestion on disaronno, that stuff is quite sweet and not terribly strong, so you can really experiment with how much to mix.
Baileys in coffee is another nice mix that doesn't warp the taste too much. Kahlua in milk is also an interesting mix that isn't too boozy tasting.
Now, a tip to help things is: dark pop/soda like colas and such tends to mix well with darker alcohol, while lighter pop/soda mixes better with lighter alcohol, generally speaking. There are exceptions (I love ginger ale + disaronno)
Another thing is: Beer is an acquired taste. First few times I had beer I hated it. I drank liquor instead and got too drunk, too quickly. Now I've learned to appreciate beer, but I still can't stand swill like budweiser (unless it's free. free beer is almost always worth drinking).
I try to stay local. Montana has some excellent local breweries; the Cold Smoke (a scotch ale) is one of the best beers I've ever had. They also have some good IPA's, but not really a pale ale person.
Another one that I drink (and that more people may have heard of) is Moose Drool, also a Montana brew.
(Honestly, I think Montana has some of the best breweries around. If anyone finds themselves in the area, shoot me a PM and I'll give you some suggestions based on where you're going to be.)

Well bud lights don't have much alcohol, only 4.2%, and you can start at 2pm and keep drinking until sleepy time.

I agree with the above quote, anyone that doesn't like beer could (and should) continue trying different stuff, eventually you will develop a taste for something. Then you can branch out further.

my room mate gets them for $29 1/5 at the liqour store. Pretty standard price for mid shelf,.
I can't believe I'm about to reccommend a vodka. If you live in the US or Canada, pick up a bottle of Tito's. I tried it this weekend on a friend's reccommendation, and was really impressed. It's a very good, ultra smoothe, corn vodka. The real seller, though, is the price. I paid a little under $30 for a 1750mL bottle. I haven't seen anything nearly as good for anything close to that price.
^ I second that recommendation. I was looking at Belvedere but the guy working told me that Tito's is seriously comparable for a fraction of the price. I paid like $18 dollars for a bottle, it's SO smooth. The taste, smoothness, and price make it great for literally anything.

I love beer, cider & wine Which all have some nice small producters in France, Belgium, Switzerland. The wine knowledge is also fun & happens with friends or family. Wine's taste depends so much on what you eat with and also year, region etc However I don't like strong alcohols like vodka, whysky etc It just tastes so bad to me.

I agree, Swiss do have some good beers.
Thou i would dissagree on strong alco part. It's just a matter of how do you drink it.
Also, if we are talking cocktails - If you dare, try Flaming Lamborghini, usually i'm pretty fine at holding my alco, but this stuff rocks. After 3rd round i aleready barely stood on my feet. Hard stuff, strongly reccomend.
I'm a fan of bacardi and coke to be honest. It's not harsh so its easy to drink and you don't really get to drunk off of them as long as you aren't pounding them back. Beer wise its pretty much Samuel Adams for me, no better American beer in my opinion. Grey Goose straight up is pretty good too for the nights im trying to not remember. And McCallums if im just having a drink or two.
In Poland beer and vodka are the front runners. I like almost all the beers from the Amber line (Zywe, Zlote Lwy, Johannes and Amber). When it comes to vodka it really depends on the price range but polish vodka is so good. Belvedere, Sobieski, Wyborowa, Czysta de Luxe (with the last three being pretty cheap). Russian Standard is also an amazing vodka!
Best real beer - Gulden Draak. The Belgians know how it's done and I'm British so I know what I'm talking about. I can't understand why so many people won't try ale/bitter/beers as distinct from lager/fizzy piss. A nice chocolately stout: Imperial is good. Local cloudy cider is the mutts nuts if you can get it. Favourite spirit - nice chilled Vodka - Kazakh, Canadian, nothing cheap and methylated. Favourite girly drink - mojito (white rum, mint leaves, lime juice, sugar syrup and soda over crushed ice) Oh and wines - anything red that doesn't taste like battery acid. There's a whole world of alcohol out there. Some of it even tastes nice!
Needless to say, it is fucking epic :D Not only are their regular ales really good, they make two of the strongest beers in the world: Tactical Nuclear Penguin (32%) (when a brewery names a beer that, you know they're onto something good) and the strongest beer in the world, Sink The Bismark (41%). Fortunately for the health of their customers (and their wallets) you can only buy these things as shots.
Can you even brew a beer to 32% or 41%. I was under the impression that fermentation stopped somewhere around 15%. Beyond that, the alcohol content becomes too strong and simply kills the yeast, which is what ferments the beer in the first place. Do they use some sort of artificial fermentation process or simply add grain alcohol. If it's the latter, is it even still considered beer? Do they distill it? If they do, I'm sure it's no longer beer.
Either way, 41% beer sounds terrible. It would be really flat, and the alcohol flavor would completely overwhelm the rest of the flavors. I mean, I'd definitely order it, but I wouldn't expect much.
The overlord of all beer. Taste a sip out of the delicious bastard and you can´t go back to ordinary beer, or you can, but it just wont be the same. 100/100 @ ratebeer.com.
Rochefort is too good. Last week I had the 6, 8 & 10. Pleasant week.
A favorite beer when I'm out drinking is Coopers sparkling ale though.
You sir are amazing, i live in South Australia and my Uncle was Married next door to the Coopers Brewery and made home brew for quite a few years as well which he ended up being surprisingly good at. I went through a big phase of drinking Sparkling Ale but recently when at home or at the pub i drink Coopers Pale Ale, Hahn Super Dry -----> Cider of some sort, Bulmers or Rekorderlig -------> Wild Turkey and Coke/Jacks and Coke as the night progresses mixed in with some shooters etc. When catching up with family or good friends i drink Blue Label

Well bud lights don't have much alcohol, only 4.2%, and you can start at 2pm and keep drinking until sleepy time.
Another thing is: Beer is an acquired taste. First few times I had beer I hated it. I drank liquor instead and got too drunk, too quickly. Now I've learned to appreciate beer, but I still can't stand swill like budweiser (unless it's free. free beer is almost always worth drinking).
I agree with the above quote, anyone that doesn't like beer could (and should) continue trying different stuff, eventually you will develop a taste for something. Then you can branch out further.
QFT by these wise gentleman. I was lucky and as soon as i started drinking (Sneaking out with the lads at 14/15) i was the only person out of a group of 8-10 that actually drank beer and enjoyed it. The others drank it only because it was cheap to get drunk with or they drank Spirits. Most of them now enjoy it but it took a few years of me forcing dozens of different beers down their throats until i finally got a "This one is alright i suppose"

Yeah, TNP and STB are triple- and quadruple-freeze distilled, respectively. The stout that became TNP was ~10% before the freezing.
As im from the cologne area i obviously drink Kölsch and I would recommend it for everyone to get into beer cause it doesnt taste that strong and in generally is just awesome. I also really like wheat beer (to stick with german beers wich are just awesome I'd go for erdinger).
Regarding "hard" alcohol i really like coke with whiskey. Classic but still great or just pure whiskey of a good brand is just awesome...

Ok, that's actually pretty cool. I knew people did that to desalinate water, but using it to make stronger beer is really creative. When science and drinking collide, everyone wins.
Craft beers are what it's about. I'm a pretty loathsome beer snob, I can definitely see way more variety in beer than in wine. East coast US isn't shabby for craft breweries either. Dogfish Head, Victory, Dominion, Clipper City, and Yards are all within 2 hours of me, then there's some more up in New England.
Brewpubs are also amazing. Iron Hill Brewery is godlike if you're ever visiting the Philadelphia/Delaware area, as is Brewer's Art in Baltimore.
I also like bourbon, but I've mostly been going for craft beer lately.

So besides the breweries you listed, are there any other gems on the east coast I should look forward to? I am moving to NYC in July from the west coast and I need some good advice as far as beers out there go. I am a huge fan of Oatmeal and Espresso Stounts, Scotch and Bourbon porters/stouts, Brown ales, Scotch ales, and Dark IPA's. Basically, if it is dark I like it.
A friend of mine lives in the Netherlands. Told me this was his favourite beer in the world, and since we don't have any access to it here in Sweden *at all*, he mailed me a bottle. Most expensive beer I've had, since the bottle + mail cost ended up at 20 euros.
But holy hell, he wasn't joking. It's definitely a top notch ale, and the bottle might be one of the sexiest things I've seen. If you can get it at a (much) cheaper price than me, I recommend it
As you can see I'm a slight fan of booze. The nicest thing I have is a bottle of 18-year-old Laphroaig, expensive but still quite a good value imo. My favorite unusual cocktail right now is probably the Aviation: 2 oz gin, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 1/4 oz maraschino, 1/4 oz creme de violette. Not exactly easy to get at a bar! I'm also a fan of experimenting with Manhattans by trying not only different bourbons and ryes (and bitters), but substitues for the vermouth, such as Punt e Mes, or other tonic wines, or even amaro.

Good man! Pilsener Urquell all the way. My absolute favorite when it comes to beer.
I really enjoy a good White Russian. I often add a little bit of extra coffee.
My weakness: Tequila. I just love doing Tequila shots.
Unfortunately, I reside in Ontario Canada, where the gustapo - I mean the LCBO (Liquor control board of ontario) regulates, and is the retailer of all booze in the province. So, to get beer, it's either "The Beer Store" (acutal name) or the LCBO store. Imported beers and booze are best found at the LCBO store, but we cannot get everything. Stuff that isn't regularily stocked can be special ordered via the LCBO (minimum order might apply, ie several cases etc) but a good amount of the time smaller brandes are not able to be ordered.
So, we get to drink what we want, as long as the province lets us.
So, whats the saying... you get what you are given.
My drink of choice is of course, the white russian. If it's good enough for the dude, it's certainly good enough for me. I generally use kahluah for the coffee liquor. I've tried it with some of the fancier italian coffee liquors, but it's not enough of a flavor difference to justify the pricetag. For my Vodka, I never completely cheap out. I have 3-4 bottles of vodka generally, depending on what I'm making with it (my bar consists mostly of vodka; as it's my favorite). If I'm planning on drinking socially (that is to say, multiple drinks) I generally go with the kettle one. If I'm making it for company or for a nice meal, I might go ahead and make it with the grey goose. Something really good to do if you like vanilla is to put a capful of vanilla etract in your white russian (I first had this with vanilla vodka, but I don't think flavored vodkas are generally that good, so I don't keep them in the house); it's delicious.
I also enjoy a simple soda/vodka. My favorite is vodka with gingerale. If I'm using a lighter flavor soda like gingerale, lemonlime, etc, I'll go ahead and either grey goose or absolut. If I'm using a heaver soda like rootbeer that covers up the vodka more, I will use kettle one. Another great drink that's great for a session drink is rootbeer/vodka with vanilla etract.
I've been on a kind of beer kick lately, though. I've been finding I really some craft beers (I never liked bud, coors, miller, etc). My favorite thusfar has been Founders Dirty Bastard scotch ale and Bells black note stout (both local michigan brews)
On May 18 2012 15:55 McFeser wrote: I hate you Europeans and your good beers. Do you know how hard it is to get that kind of stuff over here? :/
This is false. There is good beer all over the U.S. There is really really BAD beer too, but that is true the world over.
not in Germany because our beer is protected by law
There is still some cheap, bad beer in Germany. The Reinheitsgebot is awesome and everything, but just because you have to use certain ingredients does not mean that you can't make shitty stuff with them. I live in Vienna right now, and my German friends have told me all about the shitty beer you can get. I am sure that it is better than the worst American 'beers' (e.g. Milwaukee's Best Ice or Natural Ice or Olde English or whatever) but that does not mean that it is good.
edit: For context, I love beer. I have lived in Washington state, Oregon, California, Granada (Spain), and Vienna (Austria), drinking beer the whole time. I love the beer that I get here in Europe, but I cannot agree with the widespread belief that the United States does not have good beer. I have been to a little riverside brewery in a small town in Washington that made IPAs that will knock you out of your seat. Some of the best dark beer I have ever had was in Bend, Oregon.
As far as beers go, I love New Castle. I recently tried a Roscoe Brew House IPA which was pretty good. Lagers and IPA's are typically my favorite beers. When it comes to liquor I'm a Jameson man myself. Gotta love it!

Dissarono, i find it mixes with everything. In addition it has cool commercials and the top of it is really fun to spin off.
This was a really good tip for me. I really enjoy Amaretto with cola, it kinda reminds me of Dr Pepper but not really. And yes I say amaretto as I have learned this week that Dissarono is a brand of Amaretto (lol I'm retarded). Either way they didn't have that at the place I went but they did have Gozio, which is apparently of similar quality albeit slightly less sweet. I dunno, I like it ^^

A very good choice sir, for the longest time I'd been making white Russians incorrectly, my friend bought me a mixing book for my birthday a year back and since then, I can say with confidence that White Russians are among my favorite mixed drinks.
oh so many good things on this page! I really want to try Mortlach. Laphroaig 10 is one of my favorites (much better than ardbeg 10 imho). And the pimms cup! Fucking obscure drink. Heres how i make mine: 1 Small cucumber 3oz pimms 1oz lemon juice pinch of sugar sprig of rosemary sprig of mint 1 slice lemon 1 strawberry (halfed) 3oz lemonade

Hell, I spend $18 for a 1.5L of Seagram's Gin. Really can't beat the price, and Seagram's makes a pretty decent liquor if you're going to be mixing it into a cocktail. My preferred drink is whiskey (all kinds, bourbon, scotch, irish) but even Seagram's whiskey goes great with ginger ale, and it's about the same price as their gin.
If I'm going to spend more on alcohol I usually buy Jameson or Bushmills. I have a bottle of Glenlivet 12 in the cabinet that I drink every once in a while as well.
Beer wise I usually stick to Amberbock or Yuengling. I picked up a case of Sam Adam's Summer Ale and was pleasantly surprised. It has a very refreshing taste. Ended up buying another case when my friends and I took a boat out into the bay for the day.

However, my #1 favorite drink is Magic Hat #9. I'm not a huge drinker by any means, but when I do drink, it's generally Magic Hat.

When you say "acidic," do you mean acidic like and acidic flavor or just that it tastes harsh?
If you mean you're getting an acidic flavor (like vinegar), you're probably drinking a lot of cheap or poorly stored wine, or you're drinking acidic mixed drinks (lots of citrus, etc). Try something else. Buy better quality alcohol or try something new. The vast majority of beers have very little if any acidic flavor.
If you mean it tastes "harsh" there are a few options. Cheap hard liquor will almost always taste harsh or volatile, so avoid that. There's also a chance that you're just not used to the taste of alcohol. Most people naturally like the taste of moderate concentrations of alcohol (beer or weak wine), but anything much stronger can be an acquired taste. Start with something easy like some sugary mixed drinks or whatever beers are most popular where you live.

Did you just say, Stay sober, 420?
You know being high is not being sober right?
And since we are on the subject of alcohol, i have recently fell in love with Ninkasi brewery here in Oregon state. Nothing i have tried from them has been bad, all packed with flavor.
The double IPA "tricerahops", the first time i had that, i was almost done with the tall bottle and as wondering why i felt it so much. It was super easy to drink and very hoppy, turns out its over 8%. I had no idea. Great beer, great taste.
black butte porter and obsidian stout are probalby my favorite beers, in that order i've recently been dabbling in tequila, but i don't know what i'm doing. haha
im not too picky, i think alcohol is a poison and it kills the body bit by bit
if you get serious with alcohol, like you only favor one kind, you're probably out of shape, and unhealthy
i read a post and some guy was friendly with marijuana, putting smoke into your lungs isn't natural either, think of humans in an area full of smoke, doesn't seem liveable
sober is the way to go, get your high from running up a hill with 30 lbs on your back, drink your alcohol on friday and saturday nights

I'm moving from Oregon to New York in a month and the things I am bringing with me are computer, few scraps of clothing, as much Ninkasi as I can possibly fit in suitcase. One of the first great beers I had was the Tricerahops and Oatis has got me through the toughest of tough times (and also been there with me through the bestest of best times). I am just hoping Ninkasi can make it out to the east coast some time, it is second only to Oakshire for me. Fuck I'm going to miss Oregon
It is categorized as White Whisky, it's whisky (which according to Canadian standards has been aged at least three years in oak) that has been carbon filtered until it's clear.
Very interesting taste. I think I prefer it as a vodka substitute, rather than as an actual whisky haha. Nonetheless, it's delicious and has a great nose, as well as a pretty good palate. I wouldn't sip it alone, but in a mix it's really quite excellent.
So I've found a bottle of "King's Ransom 'Round the World' blended scotch whiskey...
It's in an earthenware ceramic jug with stopper, fully sealed... I can't find any information on it and can only date it between 1904 and 1946, distilled by William Whiteley & Co Distillers, Leith, Scotland. This seems to be the now-called Eradour distillery.

So... what do?
I can put a pic up if people want
I am not an expert on scotch, but "blended scotch whiskey" means the actual contents are a mix of many different scotches all from different grains, malts, and possibly distillers; usually comparatively cheaper. Fine scotches are usually single malt.
It sounds like a really cool bottle that I would showcase proudly though, especially with the antique age.
"im not old enough (19)" I loled, I like drinking things i haven't drank before, I dont find many drinks horrible but there are very few I would want to drink again
What I'm drinking at the moment. Cheap as hell but only really good for the start of the night. Drinking just Soju is a fast way to a bad headache in the morning.
You can also put like 2 or 3 shots in a litre of beer and it just tastes the same, except its a bit sweeter and you get drunk 3 times as fast.
I'm normally a beer drinker, but when I feel like hard liquor, I go for this stuff: Its an Arabian unsweetened anise liquor and is just delicious (although I assume there are better araks out there, this is just what is available to me). It also gets this really gorgeous 'snow' effect if you freeze it where the liquor will be permeated by these miniscule light-catching crystals in suspension (I assume this is anethole coming out of solution and crystallizing, but I'm not sure)

Mix it with some peach juice or something and it will get you super fucked up and it will taste like pure juice. I remember passing out once during a party and not remembering a single thing after drinking a peach soju mixture. (it was all recorded on video though >,< )

My favorite beer is made in Bariloche, Argentina. It's a raspberry beer. The problem is that Bariloche is the only place where you can buy it, but still the best beer I've ever had.
I used to only drink craft beers and all that and thought I was "above" lowly domestic brews(I'm from the US) such as Bud, Miller, etc. Then I tried Miller High Life and thoroughly enjoyed it and decided right then and there that I would no longer be a douchey hipster with my beer selection. My wallet has thanked me ever since.
BTW your not all douchey hipsters if all you like is craft and micro brews...but some of you are. ;D
Also, I've been drinking a lot of box wine recently. I like to pour it into a can then drink it from there. For whatever reason, I think it tastes better out of a can.
When drinking games I've got it done to a Tee, some sort of easy drinking, WKD or smirnoff ice, anything that tastes good and has a low percentage(dont hate, i hate having to drink vast quantities of drinks that taste disgusting), then usually pear or apple cider for a break, then vodka and coke to get drunk. If im trying to make up time and get drunk much faster I will just mix all the alcohol available from everyone, which is usually 2 - 3 things with 35+ percentage, usually there are a few whiskys and different types of vodka going. I mix them all up and just smashed.
I knew stone wasn't much for subtlety (their most popular beer is called "arrogant bastard," which also comes in an oaked variety), but now I know they at least have a sense of complexity. This is a pretty respectable porter. It's a bit thin as porters go, but the mild smokey flavor and extremely dark malts make up for it. It's worth a try, if you can get a decent price.
I mostly drink Wild Turkey, either 101 proof or Rare Breed (my favourite drink). I used to drink a variety of things, mostly spirits still, but nowadays I don't drink that much so when I do I like it to be awesome. Currently got a bottle of Rare Breed and WT 101 in the freezer (yeah, I keep my bourbon in the freezer), taking one to a party tomorrow and having a party next weekend to drink the other . Going to be delicious.

Have you tried the Wild Turkey Rye? I like bourbon a lot, but regular wild turkey 101 turns my stomach. Their Rye Whiskey (which is also 101) is really well balanced. It's actually a little sweet for a Rye, but it's worth a try.
So myself and some friends are getting together in the near future, and one of us will be bringing the alcohol. We each have our own lists, and here's mine: + Show Spoiler +
Lucid Absinthe Kraken Spiced Rum
After reading this thread, adding: Triple Sec (limoncello wan't exactly my thing, and this is cheap) Double Bastard Ale (well recommended in here) Rochefort 10 (well recommended in here) Kilkenny (because red) Mead (because vikings)
Note: I don't really like beer, but I've only had Guiness, Budweiser and Schaffer. Anyone have any suggestions? Relatively new to this.
This may be pretty noob, but I bought a 5L mini keg of Heineken a couple days ago. Gooooooood stuff. Hate it out of the bottle, love it out of the can, love it even more out of the keg.
I also just decided to hunt through this thread for any interesting looking beers. I'm a newbie when it comes to beer (only had a handful of different kinds as I just recently started drinking a year or so ago) but I'm always game to try a new one if it's handy.
First of all: I'm sorry for all you who live in a country where alcohol is supidly expensive.
Back to topic, I personally really like Veltins, Beck's, Heineken and all kinds of Ale, wheat beer is cool aswell, but it kinda makes you feel pretty stuffed after 1 or 2. What people may not know is, that in Germany have sum really bad (or some may even call it disgusting :D) beers (Oettinger for example :S). If I go party gimme Vodka (only 40% not that cheap crap with 37% n' stuff) or Jaegermeister.
I live in denmark So everything else than tuborg is treachery, im only 17 so most of my drinking is at parties. I like various drinks like Jäger bombs(sweet jesus) and anything with vodka :D
I just moved to Oregon and theres so many microbrews here at safeways they have about 40 different microbrews on the shelves but then I see people still getting cases of bud lights it makes me sad. You cant buy vodka or rum at safeway here though which sucks. My favorite has to be a hefeweizen made by firestation 5.
Normally I like scotch (big ups to the highland park guy on this page), but ive been trying some summer cocktails. Ill share my favorites:
Gimlet
1/4 oz Lime juice (fresh squeezed, duh) 1/2 oz Roses Lime Cordial 2 oz Gin (hendricks is good)
Shake over ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lime slice.
Pimms Cup:
1 Lemon slice 1 English cucumber 1 strawberry (halfed) 1 sprig of mint 1 sprig of rosemary 1 sprig of thyme 1 pinch sugar 1 oz pimms 1/2 oz lemon juice
Fill a collins glass with ice and 3 cucumber slices, the lemon slice, and strawberry halfs. Muddle sugar, pimms, lemon juice, and 3 cucumber slices: strain into collins glass. Top with lemon soda and garnish with rosemary, thyme, mint and a cucumber spear.
It takes a bit of work but fuck is this ever a tasty beverage. Oh and it goes without saying you should only use the best fresh ingredients you can find
imo the taste of dr pepper goes sooo much better with rum than coke ever will it almost tastes like just pure dr pepper which can lead to some.....over indulgence
1/2 oz lime juice 2 tbsp sugar 1 oz white rum 3 fresh mint leaves Soda water to top up
Muddle sugar, mint and lime juice in a collins glass (or a hurricane glass imho). Add rum, stir, fill glass with ice, then top up with club soda. Garnish with a lime slice and a sprig of mint. Minty and delicious.
I got a bro of mine a bottle of Jack Daniels for his birthday, yesterday. We called two more bros over to his house, and got some beers, some Coke as well.
Last thing I remember was talking to my crush on the phone, crying. Shit.

I really like this notion of acquired taste and having a drink that is my drink.
Since I don't like anything above 40% any more (puked too often when I was younger) and beer is not to my liking, what else is there to get used to?
I remember tremendously enjoying one kind of beer, it had a very malt-beer taste (not so sweet, obviously) to it, had a higher alcohol percentage than normal beer and was darker, but not bitter at all. Any idea what I might have drunk?

There's wines, ciders, cognacs and all sorts of alcohol types in the beer - vodka range, there are of course some outside of this range as well, but anything lighter than an alcoholic beer I wouldn't really consider "alcohol" any more.
What you drunk might be a kind of "Strong" beer. They make it sweeter than regular beer quite often, to disguise the taste of alcohol in it.

I also used to mostly drink craft beers. But now for my nights out drinking I mostly go for maybe two beers I haven't tasted before and then whatever ecological lager is the cheapest. When I treat myself to something special nowadays, it's usually dark rum or whiskey.

Also right now I got that Bud Light Platinum that is in the pic in the op. Its not bad, and the alcohol content is pretty darn decent 6% for a beer ;D. I do have to say the Bud Light Platinum is the best Bud Light I've ever had. Yea I know the other versions aren't really for taste, but yea...........Carta Blanca and Blue Moon - I wish I had those instead tho ^.^
Edit: just saw Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat beer below mine and realized I had forgotten my favorite beer of all time hands down.
It's awesome clear but you can also mix it with apple juice and rocks to get outstanding drink.
Yes. I discovered that drink on a weekend trip to Warsaw. Everyone was drinking it there and it was awesome. Surprisingly enough you can buy that Vodka in Germany now which makes me very happy (and very drunk from time to time).
Cider and wine give me heartburn. Hard liquor makes me overconsume it.
Beer is the way to go, but not to sound too much like a European beer snob, while I'd reluctantly call Budweiser (the Annheuser-Busch version) a beer, Bud Light is downright dish water.
Havent realy drink in a long time but when was working in a beer bar i used to drink lots.
Beer:Grimbergen, schneiderweise, pilsner (heinken),La trappe, leffe Wine:Red wine, or white on a realy sunny warm day. Wine does not have to be expensive as long as its not the cheapst bottle in the rack. When buying wine you should never buy the cheapest, a big part of the price of wine is in the bottle and you get alot better quality by paying only a little more. (like 3 euro wine is 2 euro for the bottle and 1 euro for the wine, then by buying a bottle of 4 euro, you get wine wich is basicly 2 times as expensive. just an example to give the idea, its not to accurate) Hard liquor:Ketel1,Bourbons like four roses or jack daniels, wisky jameson, glenfiddich. Port:This is basicly like wine but with 22% alcohol and lots of sugar.
If want get realy drunk something we called "stelletje" wich is a dutch word, guess the translation would be "set" A set is 2 drinks, 1 is normal pilsner like heineken the other is hard liquor, mostly jenever/gin like ketel 1 You then first take a zip of the beer, this makes your stomach get used to fluid with 5% alcohol. You then take a zip of the liquor with 40% alcohol, your stomach still thinks its getting fluid with 5% alcohol and absorbs the alcohol way faster then if you would only drink the 40% one (then the stomach gets set on dealing with 40% alcohol) You keep switching between zipping from the liquor and taking a gulp of the beer. This is what all the alcoholics drank wich came in the bar where i worked, so it is not realy recommanded to do on a daily basis.
I am sure i am about to get slammed for writting this but any who..
Belive it or not i was a fine wine advisor for 5 years so i actrully drink alot of wine whilst playing SC, but not run of the mill supermarket wine but expensive wine, it costs me a small fortune. I should really give up.
I was also trying to find a picture of me drinking some random spirit when i was in Italy on a work trip (bearing in mind these work trips are all about drinking in that industry! :D) that i shit you not, had a skull and crossbones on the front of the bottle, i set fire to it and then took it as a shot. I was sooooo hungover in the morning. Good times.
I dont know if this is common knowledge, but "Run Around the Campfire Naked" is a must try for any party. Its perfect for summer and is a refreshing, cheap (if you want) and delicious mixed drink. If your worried about shitty vodka taste, dont! Because only the pickiest of hard liquor haters will be able to taste any vodka! Here is what you will need:
1 cup raspberry vodka
10 light beers (seriously, needs to be light shitty beer, not bluemoon or anything heavy)
2 raspberry lemonade frozen concentrate cans
Mix it all in a large bowl and drink up! Its a refreshing and delicious drink perfect for any party occasion! Prepare to have your thirst quenched and to be fucked up this summer!
Staropramen is probably my favourite beer.. I remember drinking some a German one, october 2009. On the label it said that it had won beerfest, so I assume that it was 2008 it had won. Anyone who would happen to know what that might've been?
Apart from that, I've really started liking champagne lately. Preferably the sweeter kind, but they're all great.
Edit. the best drink ever have always been and will always be jägermeister + red bull ofcourse.

If I am not trying to get hammered my favorite drink is a smith and wesson, because it actually tastes amazing.
1 shot vodka, 1 shot kahlua, 2 oz half and half, and then club soda/coke/pepsi to taste.
We made a similar drink on New Year's with all the cast off bottles of alcohol and mix we had around. We called it a bad idea.
1/2 oz peach vodka 1/2 triple sec 1/2 blue curacao liqeur 1/2 tequila 1/2 rum 1/2 peach schnapps 1/2 oz of vodka And a splash of Coke or Sprite or OJ. Whatever's around.
It actually tasted pretty good. But I think one out of three people partaking it got sick. And yeah it looks the same with sprite, some kind of crazy green colour with OJ, and like coke with coke.
My old reliable is vodka tonic, because tonic water is delicious.
And If I'm not trying to get drunk I drink some sort of beer. Millstreet Organic is my beer of choice, and there's some decent cheaper European Beers like Staropramen, Pilsner Urquell, BitBurger, Czechvar, Faxe, but given the choice I'll drink the Organic.

haha sure heres my everclear recipe:
1 Generous portion of psychadelic plant material (psilocybin mushrooms, morning glory seeds, yopo seeds, marijuanna works too, etc..) 5 - 10 ounces of everclear
Soak for a month, strain and discard plant matter. Evaporate liquid in well ventilated area. Consume with nice people in a quiet setting.

That sounds like too much juice for how much liquor is going in that. We've done the whole bottle of regular vodka, 15 strong beers(Cheap 6% shit), and I can't remember if it was 1 or 2 cans of fruit punch. I hate vodka and I could chug that stuff down.
As whiskey goes, I love both bourbon and scotch. For beer I enjoy most every kind of beer as long as they are well crafted. My favorite being anything dark, I love beer so thick it could be considered a meal replacement. And my father being the wine snob he is, I have always grown up drinking extremely nice wine, for me personally I like anything red.

I don't really think that's true. Commercial beers are very much the same (like Carlsberg, or they drink a lot of Budweiser and Michelob in EU). As far as artisan beers go, they are also very much the same. Both continents have some amazing beer.
My favorite drink, however, I would say is either gin and tonic, a gimlet (yeah I like gin), or a nice beer (usually on the paler side).
EDIT: When I say Gimlet, I mean the true gimlet: half lime juice, half gin. Always Beefeater by the way.

It depend how you use this alcool for.
For Cognac/Whiskey (good ones), i've no problem to spend 50-100€ for a single bottle (75CL). But it's not to get drunk, it's just for the taste, in small quantity and without mixing it.

While you're completely entitled to believe both are terrible, they don't taste anything alike.

50 dollars is 40 euros. And if you're only making 40 euros a day in the Netherlands you desperately need to get a better job.
Skittles vodka is terrible, it's something I tried in freshman year of college. Hotsauce vodka on the other hand... Is a lot of fun, haha, at least in my opinion.
My favorite these days is to make my own ouzo by mixing a tiny bit of pure anethole (anise essential oil) with vodka. You need about 1 ml of oil per liter of vodka. Mix it with cold water and it turns white like absinthe. Cool! Also tastes great, like licorice.

I feel for everyone who has to pay a fucking day's work just to drink
50 dollars is 40 euros. And if you're only making 40 euros a day in the Netherlands you desperately need to get a better job.
Ofcourse, but you can start drinking it here at 18.
You can earn as little as 3.50 euro / hour. 8x3.50 = 28 euro.
So yeah, 40 euro IS a lot of money for you then ^^

3.50 an hour? In the Netherlands? That seems ridiculously low... Just looked up your minimum wage laws and that's just really weird. People under 23 are allowed to be paid below minimum wage? Whaaat?
Anyway, of course you shouldn't drink 40 euro liquor if you're earning 3.50 an hour. You shouldn't be drinking at all if you're making 3.50 an hour, to be honest. I don't see how that's even a living wage in Western Europe.
Does anyone here know of a good liquor with a kind of warm cinnamon flavor, like a cinnamon roll, as opposed to a like a hot cinnamon like candy/fireball etc...?
Also known as: Elixir of the Gods, Liquid Death, Gas outta Satan's Ass.
The amount of fire warnings on the bottle alone make it awesome.
My favorite Everclear drink is using 1 can of concentrate fruit punch made with half the amount of water, then add in half a mickey of Everclear. Gets you WRECKED without tasting a thing, and 1 mickey (what we Canadian's call the little 325ml bottles) can usually do 2 people for the night unless you want to get destroyed and go for the whole thing yourself.
Anyone else care to share their Everclear recipes?

I'm not and I've heard it called a mickey by Canadians (prairies, BC).

Lol it shouldn't be too hard. The most time-consuming part would be to filter out the skittles, and I think I'm probably going to skip that part lol.
I can't decide if I should do that, or try gummy bears soaked in vodka. I think I might just buy a cheap 1 liter bottle and do both. Any recommendations for a certain brand?
Vodka gummy bears are awful. I always thought the point of a shot was to get the alcohol out of your mouth and down your throat as fast as possible, so whats the point of forcing yourself to chew it?
And lets face it, if you're using a vodka to soak gummy bears it probably isn't a good one.

I don't really think that's true. Commercial beers are very much the same (like Carlsberg, or they drink a lot of Budweiser and Michelob in EU).
Wait what?
Are you telling me you think Budweiser and Carlsberg taste the same?
EDIT: I actually enjoy both but I don't think they could taste more different.
budweiser and carlsberg are terrible
You know, carlsberg is rated as the best pilsner in the world, just saying. I've tried a bud, and it was horrible, so they aren't at all the same lol! and all buds tastes of nothing, even the non-light versions are only like 3%, while a proper carlsberg is 5%(or 4,8 or something :s)

My favorite absinthe so far quite striking wormwood taste at first but very aromatic also. Too expensive to get drunk on though for that I just prefer dirt cheap vodka :D
Apologies if this joke has been referenced before but as Monty Python said "American beer is like making love in a canoe, it's fucking close to water".
That being said Samuel Adams I think it's called is American and is a decent beer. James Squire is my current favourite Australian domestic beer. Gin and tonic with fresh lime is the greatest ever summer beverage and my current favourite scotch is Glenmorangie, a surprisingly smooth and delicious whiskey seeing as it is only 12 years old and a single malt.
Greatest wine ever is still Coolabah red lambrusco, many a day/night of university disappeared as a result of that stuff retailing for $12 / 4 litre cask. Long live the goon bag and 'goon-o-fortune'.
America has the best beer in the world unless you're talking about a genre that those Dutch monks do, that stuff is amazing. The sheer amount of micro and craft brewers here in America have created some of the most delicious beers in the world.
If you think of American beer and all you come up with is: Bud varieties Miller varieties Coors/Light PBR
European beer is the old guard, North American beer is the new kid on the block. If you want reliable classics with great history then European beers are always there for you. If you want something new and exciting the US and Canada have a lot to offer.
If I was forced to personally choose between the two continents, I would now give NA a slight advantage just because of the variety.

Carlsberg deserves better than being lumped with bud light, but it's definitely not on anybodies top ten list, even in its style. I think your rating might have come from college aged Danes

Then you're not searching very hard.
If you think America has the best beer in the world outside of a genre that those Dutch monks do (I'm guessing that you are refering to Trappist? which is kinda funny seeing how 6/8 of the monestaries are in Belgium) you are very ill-informed.
I'll admit there is a vast amount of microbrews in America but it is kinda ignorant to deny the tradition for brewing which is present in Europe and the riddiculous amount of microbreweries here. What sort a beers are you into? Perhaps I could give some recommendations.
EDIT: To the above poster: If I recall correctly it was the best mass-produced pilsner - which is hardly a competition in the first place outside of the pilsner urquell which quite frankly tastes a lot like water.
And once again, I think you are underestimating the variety which you see in the European microbreweries, perhaps the reason is that the only beers making it overseas are "the old guard"?

Does soaking Fruit in Vodka actually get rid of the flavor of Vodka? i know we drop fruit here in moonshine(yes the illegal kind) and it does nothing but change the color, its alot stronger than Vodka though so that might be why.
Also been in a real Jack Daniel's phase now, def my favorite liquor right now.
My friends and I once bought a large watermelon and poured a fifth of smirnoff in through a small hole we cut in the top. After letting the watermelon sit in the fridge for about 6 hours, we pulled it out, cut it up, and enjoyed. The alcohol flavor does diminish significantly I can say, so be careful, as it is considerably easier to eat yourself wasted on vodka watermelon than drinking the equivalent.
You can make vodka watermelons easily (little hole, funnel, slowly add vodka and let it soak it, repeat). However, they taste pretty crappy, watermelons don't really have enough of a taste by themselves to cover up a lot of alcohol. That being said, there are many ways to easily chagne the flavor of vodka with tiny amounts of other ingredients. Definitely worth it but it takes a bit of practice to pull off.

It's just been a mix if what I've seen over here (we have a decent import list) and what I've experienced on my trips to Europe. I will be heading back to Germany next summer and plan to take a side trip to the Czech Republic, so any good recommendations for smaller Czech breweries would be awesome.
It could be that I haven't had enough exposure European microbreweries. However, the NA microbrewery scene is expanding at an insane rate right now.
We here cut the watermelon in half, empty it and fill it with all kinds of liquors and juices (watermelon and orange specially). We serve it directly from the empty fruit and its called the "happy watermelon".

Yeah, its called "getting older" :D Seriously though, I stick with wine and microbrews, perhaps an occasional cocktail or shot here or there, otherwise I feel like utter crap and regret drinking altogether.

What do you mean by sick? If you mean hangovers, then yeah.. I recall especially when I was like 18 and did a school trip to Hungary for a week. We all drunk about 3-4 bottles of wine during the day, and then we had 3-4 drinks during the evening and drank beer as water. I didn't even get a hangover, but just felt like an elephant being peppered with tranq darts haha. I wouldn't be able to cope with half of that now..
If you mean that you throw up.. Well personally I've gone the opposite road. When I was like 14-16 something I almost always drank too much, but after that you know your limits.
Germany has the best beer, or shall i say Bavaria ( Munchen ). Nothing beats a huge weissbier on a hot summers day..it's strong but tastes very nice. Erdinger, Paulaner all fantastic, even Warsteiner is superior to anything ive drank. Only American beer that warrants a mention is Samuel Adams, and that tastes fantastic..the rest tastes like water and is simply not strong enough to be even labeled as beer in my opinion...needs to be 5% and above ( except ales ).
everclear + kool-aid + water + a shit load of sugar = Getting wasted without the taste of any booze. It seriously is dangerous stuff, because you may only have a few glasses, yet there's enough booze in there for like 8 shots. So be careful out there kiddies and stay safe

Much like I haven't heard of most of those German beers, I'm sure you haven't heard of a lot of the good American beers; we have a ton of micro brews where I live (Minnesota) that blow the mass produced stuff out of the water. Not saying they're better or worse; just saying don't drink the mass produced american beer and get the assumption that all american beer is piss

I am a beer guy. I can't drink liqour, though. The irish temper comes out every time I crack some Liqour.
If I am just sipping beers, I typically will go with some Bells Amber/Two Hearted or, if in season, Bells Oberon. If I am out at the bar with friends and plan on having a few in succession I will just go with Miller Lite or Labatt lite. Bells is delicious, but it is very filling and typically more expensive out at the bars.

That's just exposure I think.. If you drink a lot in general it takes a lot more for you to get drunk and sick. Alcoholics are often constantly drunk for instance, and can drink absolutely insane amounts and probably never get sick by the alcohol. I recall a newspaper article where a woman was found walking around in a university with 3x times the lethal amount of alcohol in her blood.

Can you actually drink 95% alcohol? O_o The closest I've come is I think 85% absinth, and that burned like fuck. You are right in that the American beer world is overpopulated with relatively weak ales, but I merely listed off breweries, not specific beers. Not sure how you'd find it out of the states, but Bell's Doppelbock is a great heavy lager definitely worth trying.
Haha I've always had a hard time coping with ales since I drank one called 'devil dog' on a weird beer place. Like literally it was a library with beer and ales. There were different sorts around the walls from floor to roof. I picked the cheapest one (still around 7 euroes or so). It tasted kind of how you'd imagine a wash cloth would. Ever since, I can't stand even the smell of ales. I think it's kind of common to have one bad experience with something, and then you never want to be near it again

One of my favorite beer is stone pale ale (5.4%) in fact a quick check of their website shows that almost all the beers they produce ale or otherwise is over 5% abv. Another great micro brewery is Deschutes not sure if they distribute outside of the states but again all of their brew is over 5%.
Oh not trying to sound condescending but almost every brew produced by the brewery's aleballe listed above are over 5% abv.

Yes, i think it's a bit confusing for some europeans - i think of ale's ( and even stout) as lighter versions of beer, that usually fall in the 4.2-4.6% range on the whole, Guiness being a prominent example..

I thought they were just dark beer with loads of foam, and mostly a more bitter taste. I don't think they have a specific alcohol percentage really?
Wow, Europeans seem to be terribly misinformed about American beer. Nobody gives a shit about BMC beers, don't judge based on that and I promise not to judge you guys based on Stella Artois.
The American craft scene is absolutely amazing there's literally hundreds (is there over 1000 yet?) micro-breweries. To stereotype that many beers is a terrible thing to do. Worse than racism.

My favorite beers overall though are the Belgians. Nothing beats a Corsendonk Brown Ale or a Rochefort 8 (10 is good too, but I think 8 is the sweet spot).
I drink mostly beer, hard liquor for getting drunk sometime. Really into German beers, but my current favourite is Hoegaarden (Belgian). Also like the micro brews from where I'm from (Newfoundland, Canada). Great thread!

This is completely wrong. The difference between ales and lagers is the type of yeast and temperatures they ferment at, it has nothing to do with alcohol%.
I've had ales with 2% alcohol and ales with 18%+ alcohol. There's a massive spectrum within the category of ales from Weizens to Quads to Wits to Lambics.

It should be around 1000 now, excluding brew pubs.

I'm also staggered at the number people talking about disguising the taste of something so they can chug it down fast and just get fucked up. To those people, I say, you're missing the point! Being really drunk is awful if you even remember it, getting there is the fun part which is why people appreciate different drinks as the thread implies. I'm guessing there are a lot of younger posters drawn to this thread though
Hite is quite a tasty mass produced beer from Korea and gets sold really cheap in Australia as a clean skin beer the same way wine does :D :D :D
As to the Europe vs America beer debate, mainstream American beer is a shitload worse than its European counterparts. That should be agreed upon fairly easily but microbreweries don't count for either side as they are too hard to get a hold of outside their local area. Just extol the virtue of those you're aware of so that if the chance to try them arises we can make the most of it.
PS: Australian beer is also excellent (Fosters not included that's pommy shit now and we don't want it back).

For a pilsner, it's on most people top ten, and none of the places I've looked are danish sites etc. - and trust me, Denmark probably also some of the most new taste in beer, we also have the no. 1 beer brewer in the world(they have competitions, he wins them all) called Mikkeller, if you don't trust me, just go to his site and look at how innovative his beers are.

The best beer I have had is New Belgium's Abbey. Number two would be Odell's Myrcenary. Too bad neither are easy to find in Los Angeles... Myrcenary isn't even in the metro area.

I'm not judging based on a commercial, sigh.... you can even just use google and see that I'm right
I'm looking around and it is being called an average representation of the style. For a mass produced international beer that is actually good praise, and certainly leagues ahead of any of the massed produced beers coming out of the USA or Canada.
I think you might have misunderstood me when I said Europe is the old guard. I just meant that Europe has tons of great staples, that doesn't mean I don't think they are innovating. That being said, I think the USA, and Canada to a lesser degree, are leading the charge for new beers.

Beer is mainly my drink, I like most kinds although with some exceptions; I don't usually go for wheat beers or stouts (I like a good porter sometimes but I really have to be in the mood) or fruit kinds. I'm partial to hoppy kinds though like IPAs and Imperial IPAs and I love a good Vienna Lager. Sam Adams is by far my favorite big brand.
Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland is my favorite brewery I think, mainly cause it's the closest one to me that I find really good. When it's fresh, their Eliot Ness is amazing, but I've found it pretty variable if it's not super fresh. I haven't had many non-American beers, particularly ones that aren't the standard imported brands.
Wine, I enjoy it a lot (mainly red) but don't know much about it. Also it makes me sleepy/knocks me out pretty good.
Other drinks, I don't have very often, I usually enjoy anything competently made though, and they are usually accompanied with a party atmosphere/mindset for me.

I still never really get a hang over, no matter how much I drink, its kinda weird lol.
but no i used to be able to drink as much as i try to now without getting sick(as in puking blah blah) back when i was like 16-17, and now I cant drink anywhere near that without puking my insides out.
its really weird, then again I don't have a good feel on my limits since i rarely drink anymore. that could have something to do with it
I never get hangovers, but while I drink I have something I'm calling the "throw-up-limit". If I drink and pass the throw-up-limit I can drink an "unlimited" amount and not get sick. But there's always that time were I get really nauseous.
This is weird, but it's how I've coped for years and years. When I reach the limit I always discretely bring a strong drink with me to the bathroom and drink it as fast as possible, either it makes me throw up once and I pass the limit, or I just keep it in and also pass the limit. The nauseousness never returns, I have no idea why that is. It happens everytime except if I also drank the day before. Then the limit doesn't exist since my body thinks I've already passed it.
I've been this way since I was 18, I'm 28 now and through periods of rarely drinking and drinking way too often this pattern has stayed the same. Nowadays I drink more often than ever. I also have a theory that the throw-up-limit thingie is what prevents me from getting hangovers no matter how much I drink. I mean, I believe it's connected somehow.

It's highly recommended to not drink Everclear straight because it's so close to pure alcohol. As it goes down your throat the alcohol absorbs all the moisture, damaging the tissues. One shot of Everclear is basically equivalent to 2 1/2 shots of vodka.

If I go for beers, my favorite easily available and cheap "everyday beer" is this. Unfortunately I drink much of them over the summer, not so much in the winter:
Flensburger is pretty good, easy to get and pretty cheap. Can be recommended all around
If I want a nice wheatbeer I usually go for this:
Weihenstephaner is all around pretty awesome, especially the wheat beers.
If I want beer as fresh as possible I visit a little Beergarden with its own brewery in my area. You can get very nice beer and food of good quality, of course you can also bring your own food and just go for beers. Sometimes you also get seasonal beers like Maibock or darker beers. All around pretty awesome I have to say. If you ever happen to be in Germany in the Rhineland you should give these guys a shot:
Flensburger definitely is highly recommended. Back home at the coast it was about the most common beer. In western Germany you can still find in every bigger drinks market but I don't know many who drink it. I thave no idea how it is outside of Germany and Denmark, but I guess it's not too common.
I mean it's cool to know about american micro breweries but I'd have no idea where to get those here in Germany for a decent price
That's why we really cant judge each others small brews, right?

The DSM would disagree with you, my friend.
Personally I'm a fan of just about everything. Beers when watching sports (I enjoy a good hef, or a good lager - steinlager pure from NZ is one of my fav's). Red wine to go with dinner and red meat. And hard liquor when I want to kick it up a notch, southern comfort being my drink of choice.
As for a recipe, this is one that's popular in New Zealand and Australia, but noone knows about in the States. It is called a 'quickfuck', it's a shot consisting on melon liquer (often midori, but any will do), and baileys (I've had bad experiences subsituting in off brands here, but if you know a good one, thats fine. Now the shot is a layered shot, so you're pouring in the midori first, and then floating the baileys on top of it - this can be done straight up, using the back of a spoon, or pouring slowly down the side of the shot glass, if you're new to the technique, expect to fuck up a couple times. So in the end you're looking for clear separation between the baileys and the midori (because if they mix, it looks gross, and if they dont mix it's actually a really pretty shot). I'm neither a big fan of baileys, nor melon liquer, but this shot has been a hit with everyone i've made it for (especially the ladies), be aware though, since baileys sand melon liquer are around 20%, you'll need to have approx 2x as many of these as you would normal shots, if you're looking to get drunk. Other than that, it a great way to start the night.

Its exactly the same for me, never head a headache in my life from dinking, + i got that "puking point" just as you. If im really really drunk and go home, i might throw up. If im really really drunk and then keep drinking alot in a short time, i can drink unlimited without feeling sick.
Noticed for the first time when i was 18 and drank 1 bottle of vodka for a start, passed that point, drank on nonstop 4 hours after that. Next day at 8am i was in school again totally feelign alright.
Recently I decided to expand my beer drinking horizons and have been trying a lot of the craft brews that have been recommended to me by friends and from internet reviews. These beers have mostly all been ales though, and I was wondering if anyone had any good lagers that I could find easily out in San Francisco? Despite how much crap I'll get for this, I actually do enjoy Pabst and was curious what a "good" lager should taste like.
Edit: Besides Anchor Steam. I fully intend on trying that since I can't believe I never got around to buying some, but was interested in other more traditional lagers.

Pabst is reputably a decent lager, although I haven't tried it myself. You would probably enjoy the Munich Helles Lager style. I did a quick Google and maybe talking to the guys at City Beer Store would be worth it if you live close to there. I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.
Had a bit of Kangaroo Ridge (red wine) a few days ago and thought of this thread just now.
So cheap yet fantastic wine overall, definitely a great value. Went down great with the beef. It wasn't raw steak and had a hefty amount of seasoning, but it was still very nice overall.

Ahhh... here it is. I knew it would be here. This is the 4th time I've gotten this. The fact that I've bought it a few times is a good thing- I usually won't get something even a second time if I think it's average... so many beers out there- you can always get something you really like. This stuff is REALLY smooth, rich, and buttery. It's like a Heiniken with a much fuller and smoother flavor... from an American palette...
And I just want to say, for all the super Hop style beers, the IPA's and the Hoptimus Primes and St.Hoppy Hop drinks... almost all micro brews are like that. They keep beer fresh, hence it being an IPA (shiped from India, the hops kept it preserved). I swear to god, every micro brew across the US has made its name with a retardedly strong Hop beer.
It's so epidemic, that when someone swears by their local brew, and how awesome it is... I guess that it's super hopy IPA style or Pale ale... and it's like "oh... have you had it?"... NO... just EVERY one is like that. Anything but the super hop drinks FFS. Any micro brew that can make a REAL lager... now that is a challenge. Don't find many of those. That is why I like European beers so much....
My poison of choice is beer. I have tried a fair number of different beers in my time and have grown tired of the standard and popular in the UK, like Budweiser, Tennents, Carling etc. I usually drink eastern Asian beers such as TsingTao, Asahi and Tiger. Very nice indeed.

To be honest also one of the few Italian beers you can enjoy. Birra Moretti is crap, the Germans in South Tyrol produce some decent beer (especially the beers of the small breweries there are really good) too
I'm a 17 year old guy and my mom agreed to buy out a Dry Martini bottle and let me try it out (she had bought me strong beer before, some weeks ago, but I hated the taste of it).
So one night I drank half of the dry martini bottle and stole some of my moms15% wine and drank 5 glasses of it before swinging around and falling to the floor and puking and then puking in my bed and sleeping in it.
Next day she figured out what had happened etc and wasn't too upset, but she still found it stupid and shit.
It was fun as hell to be drunk on that and I love the feel + taste of dry martini with some ice, but my mom will never buy me alcohol again so...so what should I do to get alcohol again?
When I was in college I had alot of vodka... mainly because the difference between cheap and premier brand is pretty marginal (everything is kind of the same after filtering it X times). half / half with Dr. Pepper and sprinkle of cracked black pepper, or just on the rocks.
Beer I enjoy Pilsner or IPA most, though I do like Guinness and Blue Moon depending on weather.
Somehow I can't drink wine. I'd get more drunk on equal amount of wine over straight hard liquor for some reason.

Shopping trip today. Bought a couple of Red Seal Ale, never tried before but they got really good reviews so I'm looking forward to them
Also bought a bottle of sake, since it's a halloween party and I'm going as a ninja. I really like the look of it, almost futuristic
And, I've finally decided to learn how to drink whiskey. I've always thought of it as a horrible drink that makes your mouth taste like a fresh burned barn, but at least I realise it's a very aquired taste. A friend told me Irish whiskeys are much smoother than scotch, so my third purchase was a bottle of Jameson. I suspect I don't have to spend too much money on a whiskey that's more or less for training purposes But if there are any people who have been in my position, please give me tips if you have any. I feel like I'm really missing out on a big aspect of life...
Let me ask you this question, how many of your neurons died due to alcohol since this thread started ?! Speaking for myself, .. quite many ,how 'bout you?
Vodka, absinth or the local "tuica" (a kind of moonshine). Don't care much about brand as long as it's at least decent quality. But I'm not much of a alcohol person, I prefer weed. But when I want to get drunk for whatever reason, I always go for strong drinks.
If you ever find yourself in romania and you're a fan of strong drinks you MUST try tuica or palinca.
I'm a 17 year old guy and my mom agreed to buy out a Dry Martini bottle and let me try it out (she had bought me strong beer before, some weeks ago, but I hated the taste of it).

i can give you some beginner whiskey tips. i was in your position about a year ago. now whiskey is my favorite drink.
1. there are many types of whiskey and they can taste VERY different. especially scotches have a huge range of styles and flavors. read about the difference between bourbon, scotch, irish whiskey, rye, etc. and that'll help you pick what you want to try next.
i also like ralfy's whiskey reviews. note that he has a much more experienced sense of taste and smell than most people. being good at knowing and describing what your tasting/smelling is a skill. http://www.youtube.com/user/ralfystuff
2. aquire the taste. it's simply a matter of repetition. the more often you have some, the more you're going to grow to like it and it will burn less. also, the more times you drink a specific whiskey, the more you "get to know" all the hidden flavors/complexities.
3. the smell is a big part of enjoying whiskey. swirl it around in the glass and gently smell it. use a proper scotch glass that narrows near the top to concentrate the smells. a wine/brandy glass would be ok.
i recommend get a bottle from each category. and sometimes tasting two different whiskeys side by side is fun and educational. i recommend you try affordable popular whiskeys like maker's mark (bourbon), jameson (irish wiskey), laphroig (smokey scotch), glen fiddich (light scotch). they all taste VERY different.
and for best flavor, always drink it neat (with nothing) or with a teaspoon to tablespoon of water. ice reduces flavor which is why ice is good for shitty whiskeys.

Yes. Problem with it?
Invite your friends over, just a couple of them. Being drunk with your friends is much more fun than being drunk alone. And have some buckets ready for you and your friends.

Oh wow. Just poured a small glass and followed tip 3, and added a tiny bit of water. Unbelievable how big the difference is already... I don't *enjoy* it yet, but it was far more acceptable than it has been up til now :D Huge thanks *saves as a text file*
Definitely a whiskey person, favourites are Black Bush, Four Roses and Caol Ila. I find that my tastebuds are numbed and crap tolerance increased after two glasses, such that I can switch to a cheap rum or something and still be happy. :p

i lived on the foot of the mountain called Chartreuse, thats why i got so interested, and i was surprised that stuff is actually sold overseas.

It's not terribly hard to find, but it isn't very popular here either. Lately a lot of liqueurs and liquors that were not available in America have come back, like creme de violette and Old Tom gin. There is one I like that is not imported at all: Amer Picon, a bitter aperitif (though there is a knockoff here called Torani Amer--yes, made by the syrup company).
Lately I've been worried about how much I've been drinking. I never let my drinking affect my everyday routines, I simply don't get that drunk. But after doing a lot of searching around on google it seems like I'm like a drink above what I should be drinking a day.
If I'm drinking beer, I just have 2 bottles a night, it fills me up too much so I stay away from it. But the problem I have with is wine and possibly hard liquor like vodka.
On a daily basis I drink 3 coffee mug sized cups of wine a night except for the nights that I know I have something to do tomorrow in the early morning. So its like of the 7 days of the week 5 or 4 of them I would spend drinking like this. For the vodka I have it only occasionally and when I do have it it's typically just a little over a shot 3 times with some juice.
I'm just worried about fucking up my liver but if I have to cut back then I have to cut back...
Used to prefer scotch, but now my favorite is vodka, it's just incredibly pure and one can really feel the alcohol without being distracted by flavors and such. Drink it clear, with some ice at most, though I don't like watering it down. Still drink scotch, though not that much. Also acquired a taste for cognac, armagnac, and different varieties of that. It's fucking expensive though, so I usually get to drink some when I'm back home with my dad. Lastly as a summer drink I started to heavily favor anise drinks, that is ouzo, absinthe, etc. When chilled those go extremely well with the warm weather, and are especially good drinks for eating fish, if you happen to be at the beach
My buddy lives in China currently and when he was home for Christmas he brought me a bottle of Baijiu. This stuff tastes like fucking gasoline though and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the fuck I can mix it with to make it drinkable. Any help would be appreciated.

Haha take some root beer, you can mix that with anything. Because anything will just taste like root beer :D
Hmm, my favorite whiskey is probably Bellantines. Favorite beer is straight up jupiler and I really like belgian tripel beer. Wine I really have not had much experience with but I like strong red wine. Another thing I really like is honey rum (with coke) because its just so sweet.

What type of baijiu did your friend get you? Erguotou is just a cheap drink that has no flavours, but shouldn't taste bad. Maotai and Wuliangye are the best drinks to be had. They are insanely expensive though.
The Finger Lakes region in NY, USA has some great local distilleries. Failing the ability to get a decent micro-brew, I'll usually settle for a vodka (preferably Grey Goose) tonic with cranberry.
So has anyone ever had the pleasure of trying Rubinoff, the purest form of vodka known to man?
At just $11.99 per 1.75L bottle, it's a great way to entertain on a budget. Not only that, but it may also be used as a powerful cleaning agent, which comes in handy the morning after this bottle is cracked open. The only real downside is that sometimes it induces temporary blindness. In rare instances it has been reported to melt the taste buds off the tongue, which actually makes the stuff taste even better.

I always thought Goose Island beers were just okay, but nothing special. Then I visited the Brewery...
They have dozens of beers on tap, and all the ones I had were twice as good as the 3-4 varieties they sell in bottles. They have some really talented brewers there. It's a shame they don't distribute a broader selection. I think it has something to do with the deal they cut with Anheuser Busch, who brews all the beers they distribute (312, Honkers, etc). But man, if I could buy their Honest Stout at the liquor store, I'd probably never drink anything else.
I'm just getting started into wines...google has been mostly unhelpful as to how to pick out wine. Does anyone have any suggestions or good sites that teach you how to pick out wines?

I've become a bit of a wine fanatic somewhat recently (and when it's not wine, it's whiskey for me, specifically Glenfiddich) but on the topic of wine, I think there are a few things to consider when getting started.
White versus red What your favourite foods are (some types of wine go better with others, for example, seafood tends to pair better with a drier white like a Riesling) How dry you want your wine to be, some prefer dry, others sweet. If you're making a particular drink (like you'd need Spanish tempranillo for a sangria or whatever) If you have a really particular taste, different regions have different grapes that give their wine a particular taste (for example Argentinian malbec, etc)
If you live in an area with many local wineries also you could take advantage of wine tastings, and that could be a good way to get a good sampling of wine for cheap and it would give you a direction in which to go.

I will preface this by saying I am not a wine expert but these are some general rules I've heard/ learned.
There are some tricks that aren't 100 % true but can be a guide for quality. You know the sticker on the front of the bottle with the name and region, generally the more precise it is the better the quality you'll find. For example if it says simply Côte du Rhône it won't be as "good" in general as a bottle that tells you exactly in which castle or I guess town it was bottled; the more precise they are the easier it is to map where the grapes came from and for the big wine connaisseurs to find out about the weather for the year and how it will affect the acidity, etc.
Also, in general, there is often a sticker on the back of the bottle that tells you a little story about the grapes and what food it is good with, etc. The "good" wines won't have this sticker. They expect if you're buying the bottle you know what you need to and they aren't going to bother to tell you not to have a Bordeaux with fish, because it should already be known. That said, you can buy a $3 bottle of wine without that back sticker, but it isn't going to make it any better quality.
Next, that little dimple in the bottom of a bottle where the tanins tend to settle will be higher on the more expensive wines, though again, it is just a general rule.
It's nice as well if you talk to an expert wherever you purchase your wines to find out about them if you aren't planning to drink them right away. Some wines can be kept for decades, though after a bit of time it becomes a risky proposition if what you'll be drinking is still good. However, just because you find a 1987 whatever DOES NOT mean it is going to be good, it might be a bad year, or it might be that that particular wine doesn't really have a shelf life longer than 7 or 8 years.
Lastly, you have to know what you want. Me, I like earthy and full bodied reds, heavy on the tanins like a good St. Emilion from the Bourdeaux region. But I wouldn't drink it with any mild flavored foods, because instead of being a good accompaniment, it will completely overwhelm the flavor of the food. Also, I don't know much about Californian wines, but if you want something mild, I am a big fan of rosé. If you go French, know that a rosé d'Anjou will be fruity and sweet whereas one from Provence will be much drier.

I'm not a huge wine drinker, but I like a Malbec from Argentina. It's got a really nice texture.
To those fellow Ontarians (if you don't recognize that word, ignore the rest of this post): what's a great non-liquor alcohol to buy for parties from the perspective of a university student?

Same. I'm very partial to malbec, Spanish wines (garnacha, tempranillo), German/Austrian rieslings/gewurztraminer and as dry as possible.

This so much. I went on a longish holiday in the US visiting family last summer and I had the chance to make it out to the Finger Lakes, some really nice wineries and distilleries out there.
