I have an S2, and I purchased a case exactly like this for my phone. And I can say it's fucking awesome. It's like the otterbox in reverse. A gel-cover fits the inside, and a hard outer shell protects the phone from a drop of any distance.
EDITMy only gripe would be that if you're wearing jeans with tighter pockets, it's sometimes difficult to remove from the pocket without the whole inside coming out. Otherwise, that's a solid case for sub $25.00

I can't wait until my contract is up and I can purchase this phone. It will be a nice upgrade from my sgs1. Any good roms out for it yet?such as cyanogen, etc?.

I can't wait to get rid of my crappy Iphone 4 and pick this baby up! The OLED screen just has such a good contrast ratio and the screen size is to die for.

Cyanogen is currently undergoing development and there already are experimental releases for CM10 which are based on JellyBean. However one of the big features of JellyBean, project butter, will not be able to be ported until Samsung release an update of their own which contains it, from which Cyanogen can port it themselves. Aside from that major feature keep in mind the rom is still very much experimental and is not recommended for daily use.
CM10 and JB aside, there are already several ROMs released on xda forums but these are all based on ICS. I believe CM9 (based on ICS) is also available and although I don't think they released any stable versions yet, their release candidates are considered very stable and are viable for daily use.
Edit for the post just above: unless you have your mind set on Android and the sgs3, I would recommend you wait for the announcement of the iPhone 5 which is rumoured to happen mid September. I've heard some intriguing rumours about it.

It's still gonna be an Apple product. Ease of use, intuitive, but massively restrictive for the average geek. You'll still have to use itunes (ewwww) and you'll still be stuck with paid apps that are free on the android market. Not to mention the inflated price to cover for Apple's billion dollar marketing campaigns, which probably account for half of the retail price lol. If you know anything about computers and don't use apple products at home, it makes no sense whatsoever to buy an iphone. Pretty sure the s3 will still outperform the iphone 5, and by the time the iphone is released, there will be androids coming out that'll run circles around it in benchmarks. Sorry apple fans, but besides for the soccer mom market, the iphone isn't top dog anymore. All the apple brainwashing and branding to convince clueless buyers that their product is the only option, the only "cool" phone and that it has unique features (lol NOT) will not work for much longer.

How do you know he's a massive geek that wants an Android? I've not heard anything from him that leads me to believe either side of the story. I personally would never get myself an iPhone, but to give a proper unbiased suggestion it would be ridiculous not to consider them as a major player. You have no idea what the iPhone 5 will be like and you're already saying Androids will stomp it to the ground immediately. That is huge Android fanboyism right there. Apple has common sense and will almost certainly know they have to upgrade many aspects of their phone to continuing competing with Android (yay free market) and any smart man would bet on them heavily upgrading their next release. If they don't, then no regrets, and you can go out and buy an S3. It's only a month wait.
One thing you haven't considered is that if he's bought all his apps on the iTunes store thus far, he'll have to rebuy all of them if he moves to Android. Not all paid iTunes apps are free on Android, the only one that comes to my mind is Angry Birds.

Had it for about a month so far. Love it. Im a complete android noob and swapped from iphone 3gs. Amazingly smooth and intuitive.

every1 in this thread who is recommending the iphone 5 is only doing it so they can justify to themselves the massive over-inflated prices they paid for their iphones.
Samsung is the only way to go if the quality and features of the phone come first before being a hipster or caring about what other people think about you

I don't and never have owned an iphone, I currently have a Samsung galaxy s2 and love it to bits.
You shouldn't really blindly recommend a phone over another when the specs haven't even been released for it.

This thread was perfectly fanboy-free until very recently

Please let's not turn this into an iPhone vs. Android thread.
HAVING SAID THAT...
I was using a BB for the past 2 years (company paid for bill.. hard to say no) but I couldn't take it anymore and got me and S3. I know everyone hates iTunes with a passion, but I actually like it >_> I use it with all my computers and actually really liked the UI on my iTouch (and was easy to just sync with my computer). I've been trying several different players and still not sure what to go with. I'd prefer something closer to iTunes UI to be honest. Any suggestions? I've tried.. (keep in mind I've only used the trial versions)
Google Music The main thing I liked about the interface compared to others was the fact that I can immediately "fast scroll" through my playlist without first scroll for the bar on the right to appear. I know it seems so minuscule but I really enjoyed that on my iTouch. I don't like how clicking on an artist pops down the albums instead of opening a new screen for the albums. Maybe I'm just too used to iTunes. Settings are pretty limited from what I can tell, but the main thing I would have changed would be the album pop outs (and also to only load from my SD card since it showing my ringtones on as "Unknown" on my playlist is pretty annoying.
PowerAmp I REALLY like how it auto plays when I plug it into my aux cable in my car. I don't know if other players can do that, but I definitely drive around a lot, and something small like this actually makes me pretty happy haha. The UI is pretty spiffy, but sometimes it's hard to navigate easily from the "Now Playing" part. Something to get used to, I like iTunes on my iTouch just showing on the bottom very concrete "Artists" "Albums" etc. Also, the art on the "now playing" section is a bit intruding on the UI. Can barely see the shuffle and repeat options when it's a bright album art.
PlayerPro I liked this player quite a bit as well. It gave an iTouch feel for a bit with it showing "Artist" "Playlist" "Songs" tabs (etc) at the top. I would prefer them to be at the bottom, but it gives a very nice organized feel to it. Unfortunately, it goes away once you select an album. I also like how it loads the artist pictures from its search engine. Though I don't like how it gives me some very ugly last.fm red avatars on some of my artists. Sticks out like a sore thumb. And once again, I don't like how the albums pop down when I click on an artist (hopefully can edit, haven't figured it out from settings).
Winamp Pretty simple UI. Though I feel it's a bit too simple at points. I don't like how I have to tape the album art for the "Repeat" and "shuffle" options to pull up. And there doesn't seem to be a fast way to get to "now playing" song.
I know I'm being picky, but just trying to get the best player to use!
Summary on what I like Poweramp's autoplay on plug in = HUGE plus Google Music's automatic fast scroll PlayerPro's tabbed options (though would like for it to remain until I pick a song)
Thanks for anyone that even bothered to read through this >_>

Edit: I heed the poster above me, no Iphone wars. Google Music is easily one of the best parts of the S3

Take a look at Apollo. It's relatively new and is still under heavy development but I love it's simplistic yet powerful style. I have heard it shares some similarities with Google Play (which I have not tried, so no personal comments).

Ok, here it goes. I have some general knowledge about modern smartphones, but have never owned or used one so please bear with me.
I need a phone that
- has good battery life (according to some reviews I read, the S3 is pretty good in this respect) - has gps (check!) - can do tethering (I guess all modern smartphones can do that?) - offers my choice of mail client (how is ICS in this respect? Are there any roms already available?) - does not die on me the first time I drop it (willing to buy a case/cover/whatever for it, though) - has good reception (the area I live is has low signal strenght, and the thick walls of the house don't help) - I can somehow hook up to my FritzBox(a WifiRouter/DSL modem that supports some standard for IP phones), as I have unlimited calls to landlines there - is 'quick'. I don't want to wait at all for apps to load, or to wait 3 minutes while it boots
I don't care that much about gaming on it, or the lens. I have 1k US$ to blow on a smartphone.
So, should I buy the S3?

I don't know about hooking up to fritzbox. S3 fulfils everything else. Then again, so do a lot of other cheaper phones.

Do get a case. I dropped mine once and got a crack on the screen on the top left of the screen
I guess I was unlucky, some friends dropped theirs a couple of times and didn't even get a scratch on it...
But I can say I'm pretty happy about the phone in general.

I've got one and it's the best phone I've ever had.

My main problems with my S3 now that I've used it a lot (please let me know if you know of any fixes): * Battery life. S3 is a beast, my iPhone 4 held out FAR longer than my S3. If I go to bed and wake up in the morning, I'm down to like 10% battery... even though I haven't used it and it has just been lying around in sleep mode. I have NO idea where it spends all the energy, but it's annoying as hell having to charge it at least once a day. * Wifi keeps dying. What I mean by this is that if I'm connected to a wifi and my phone goes into an extended sleepmode, or I'm away from the wifi, my phone somehow fucks up the wifi. It says "scanning" in the wifi menu, but it doesn't find anything, just shows my "remembered" wifi connections. I have to turn off wifi, then turn it back on, and BOOM, works perfectly again. This is CONSTANT, I have to do this shit several times a day. * Not really an S3 issue, but why the hell is video quality on video sites so much worse in apps than online? The twitch app is amazing, but the default quality of 226 is HORRIBLE and on tons of streams, you can't pick a better quality... while if I go to twitch.tv in the browser (on the phone that is) and check the same stream, it looks FAAAAR better. Same with low settings on youtube movies. Is there something broke with my phone, or are just android apps crap at showing flash video?
Other than those issues, I love this darn phone.

Samsung is the only way to go if the quality and features of the phone come first before being a hipster or caring about what other people think about you Samsung doesn't sync with iCloud, iPhones do. That's the only reason I need to stick with iPhone.
That and the fact that I find the S3 way too big for a cell phone.
