I started to play tennis and I was wondering if ankle weights would help improve my speed. Some people say they're bad for your ankles so does anyone know if that's true? And if i do buy ankle weights, would just walking around with them help? Like just having them whereever i go or do i actually need to run with them?

I don't know much on ankle weights, but I'm thinking just walking around with them won't help, and running with them has a good chance of hurting your ankles. I'd suggest doing resistance running, like with a parachute or pulling weight, and powercleaning.

Run up and down a hill. Thats what my old coach told me to do, worked out pretty well.

Ankle weights put too much stress on tendons, ligaments, and joints.
They work great in moderation, but do not overexert yourself.
Try not to do lots of heavy sprinting, jumping, etc.
Back when I played basketball many guys were straining ACLs, Calcaneal tendons, etc. by trying to dunk with ankle weights on to improve their vertical leap.

nubainmuscle is right, but i have been told by coaches and a doctor that if you can somehow keep the weights right above your knees, it won't hurt anything, and will do well for you, the thing is you'll have to put much more weight since the weights won't have the mechanical advantage against your leg (lever)

I would also recommend hill sprints for increasing your speed on a tennis court.

I've played with/against many of the top players in my state and I have never heard of anyone using ankle weights for speed conditioning. Just hit good, smart shots and you wont need to be blindingly fast. So my advice: Just do some short sprints if you feel the need to improve your speed. Its not like a tennis court is THAT big... (or maybe I'm just a lazy player in general)

Ankle weights will not make you faster. The resistance provided is not sufficient to train the fast twitch muscle fibers that will increase your speed. You will of course feel like you are faster after using ankle weights, but the effect is purely psychological. Training with ankle weights, or wrist weights for that matter, will indeed make you better at moving with the weights, but there will be little to no carryover to movement without them, and the carryover is not worth the damage you could/would do to your body using them (mentioned above)

If you want to improve your speed, do sprint workouts. Also, look into the olympic lifts (c&j and the snatch), they have been known to increase running speed. Design yourself a solid lifting program with your goals in mind, and couple it with some tennis specific agility and speed training, and you will be far better off than using ankle weights.

Of course my knowledge of the specifics is rudimentary at best. I recommend you ask the same question in the appropriate section of sports specific program, who will no doubt be able to answer your question in greater depth. I suggest you check out the Health and Fitness section at -Questions regarding ankle/wrist weights come up ALL the time there. /www.martialartsplanet.com/forums

Hope this helps

unless you are really slow i wouldnt worry so much about your speed. I mean it couldnt hurt to get faster, but my coach is a on a team full of fat people and he is probably 45 and they won state this year for 4.5 Mens championship. I mean if you can make someone run then you dont have to run.

Exactly what I did for my track training. Especially when you go up the hill, it'll put alot of pressure and lactic (spelling?) acid in your muscles. Once you grow accustomed to the strength of the ankle weights, you take them all and you'll feel like Lee right before his fight with Gaara! =D
