They work great in moderation, but do not overexert yourself. Try not to do lots of heavy sprinting, jumping, etc. Back when I played basketball many guys were straining ACLs, Calcaneal tendons, etc. by trying to dunk with ankle weights on to improve their vertical leap.

If you want to improve your speed, do sprint workouts. Also, look into the olympic lifts (c&j and the snatch), they have been known to increase running speed. Design yourself a solid lifting program with your goals in mind, and couple it with some tennis specific agility and speed training, and you will be far better off than using ankle weights. Of course my knowledge of the specifics is rudimentary at best. I recommend you ask the same question in the appropriate section of sports specific program, who will no doubt be able to answer your question in greater depth. I suggest you check out the Health and Fitness section at -Questions regarding ankle/wrist weights come up ALL the time there. /www.martialartsplanet.com/forums Hope this helps ![]()

You will of course feel like you are faster after using ankle weights, but the effect is purely psychological. Training with ankle weights, or wrist weights for that matter, will indeed make you better at moving with the weights, but there will be little to no carryover to movement without them, and the carryover is not worth the damage you could/would do to your body using them (mentioned above) If you want to improve your speed, do sprint workouts. Especially when you go up the hill, it'll put alot of pressure and lactic (spelling?) acid in your muscles. Once you grow accustomed to the strength of the ankle weights, you take them all and you'll feel like Lee right before his fight with Gaara! =D
