.mpq files are just like .zip files, they are archives. you can store all sorts of data in it with folderstructure and stuff and have it save quite a bit of hd space (there are 2 reasons why it does need less space than unarchived data ... i wont go into this). the files you are looking for are "stardat.mpq" and "broodat.mpq". wether you want starcraft or broodwar unit sounds. if you want to extract the sounds, google "mpqwizard" or "mpqexplorer". they work just like winzip/winrar. /edit: css and all valve products now use a similar system. but there the files are named .gfc and are read protected, so you have to know how to open them to extract something. another reason for valve to switch from .pak (the old quake archive format) to .gfc is, that steam now can mount the whole archive scanning them for corrupt files and redownload these file on the fly without the need for the user to do anything.

"starcraft sound extractor" I think there's couple on staredit's website... you can use it to extract all the wav files from starcraft, and you can see for yourself. :D
