Of course it's reasonable that not everyone will buy things from ads; the impression is the purchase of a "potential" sale, however, just read through this thread and count the number of people who say they simply ignore the ads. By ignoring ads there is no "potential" sale.
It's not quite so cut and dried, but even assuming that what you're saying is true what's the harm in enabling TL to fleece these idiotic affiliate companies into paying them per worthless impression?
If i am on my laptop in the bedroom I AB TeamLiquid, but not because I want to. The wireless signal just barely reaches there so I try to cut out anything I can. Horrible ping and signal strength. :/
In any other situation I disable AB for TL. I will continue to do so in the future as long as you don't go all random highlighted words as ad links or crazy with Flash ads. Because I love TL, but I hate hate hate hate those 2 forms of advertising.
i asked this in another forum, but ill try again here. is it possible to turn adblock off for all of the tl.net pages except the streaming pages? i dont mind the thing at the top of the tl.net pages (even with the seizure inducing flashes), but when it starts screaming at me on a stream for example, i would like it auto-off so that i can decide whether to turn it on or off while watching the stream. i couldnt figure out how to do it myself, so am searching for answers.
While I have TL open at work I have ads. (8 1/2 hours 5 days a week), when I am at home I am too lazy to unblock some of the streams from my home computers ad block, but I also spend less time on TL at home than at work.

How much money has been transfered (by buying things from seeing ads, or from direct donations) from you to TL as a result of your shameless 100% support?
LOL you do realize often times sites get paid by the number of times the ad is displayed, regardless of if someone clicked it or even bought anything right? It doesn't sound like you know this but your smug attitude makes it sound like you should know this.
I didn't ask how much TL had been paid as a result of that user, but rather, how much money has been transfered from the user to TL by whatever means.
Consider the ideal money flow: User sees ad. User buys item. Business makes a profit and gives a cut to TL for the marketing. A business wouldn't pay for ads knowing they will never give a return.
Let's look at the money flow that people seem to be advocating in this thread: User ignores ad. User doesn't buy item. Business makes no profit but pays TL anyway.
Do you see a problem here?
No, do you see a problem here? This whole thread is about supporting TL. Try to stay with me here:
No Ad Block - Ad shows up, ad has potential to be clicked, ad has potential to sell user ad's product, TL gets money regardless, TL can continue to operate and pay for server costs, upgrades, etc
For an individual to support TL, money must somehow go from them to TL. If you aren't buying things that have been advertised then you aren't supporting TL, you are expecting those companies who are advertising to support TL.

shhh
you just revealed a glaring flaw in the financial model of enormous amounts of websites
Hehehe oops.
I'm convinced now more than ever that you have no idea how marketing and advertising, especially online, work. No clue - at all. If you actually really fail to see how even an ad showing up is beneficial to the company paying for the ad you need to go to google and read up some and then come back.

Word.
I'd love to whitelist TL, and I hate to think I'm hurting the elephant, but I have a zero-tolerance policy for video/audio ads.

i'm not even singling out the martyr rule, its just the same type of thing that makes this site too strict. in fact, you brought it up, not me. i don't even post very much on this site and it is evident that you guys are just a bunch of immature guys like the rest of us except you have a banhammer and a cute set of "rules"

Perhaps Hot Bid should have mentioned that the website feedback area is where you should discuss ALL website feedback, not just martyr rules.

The ad system works by counting the number of views each add gets, this is often done by counting the number of time a page is loaded and an ad on that page is loaded. TL uses Google Ad sense i believe but someone correct me if i am wrong i only make the assumption because they are the largest ad provider on the internet.Companies go to google and pay a set amount of money to google to have there ad run for however long, these ads can be run on there search or any of the websites that host google provided ads. Google then looks at the number of views and google pays each website monthly for the number of ad views and clicks.
Google Ad sense pays out one of two ways the first is the number of views an ad gets, this is often a set amount based on 1,000 views. The second is a set amount based on each click an ad gets. The number of views per ad is a much more common method because people don't often click on ads but that is also why its by 1,000 views and not be view. So simply by having ad block off each page loaded with an add counts towards a view and every 1,000 gains TL a set amount of money. All in all if you like this site and enjoy what TL provides just set your ad block to allow ads on TL and help them pay for somthing you use on a daily basis.
I don't even use adblock. Ads have never bothered me, and I'm smart enough to realize that without ad revenue, most of the free stuff I enjoy might not be free anymore.
Plus, I torrent and shit, the least I can do is put up with a few ads.
