My parents were never too found of all the time I spent ifront of the computer at home, but they just let me knew what they thought about it and realized at the age of 15-18ish I was old enough to make my own choices, instead of beating their lifestyle into me.
I don't bitch at their boring life of knitting and watching TV all day either..they're happy with it.

I just don't see why parents need to control what and how a mid to late teen wants to do with their life. Talking and suggesting is one thing, but don't beat your kid just cause you don't see eye to eye..

Outside of the justice system though I hope he feels some kind of ramifications for this.

o.O wtf this is legal??????

really

I don't know about the law in Arkansas but I've had experience with CPS (child protective services) and the police before against my stepdad (in Florida when I was 15 IE 6 years ago) striking me open handed in the face repeatedly and even "clapping" me in the ears. Since he never struck me with a closed fist and it was all "punishment" it was apparently legal I could be wrong, though maybe this video could prove to be psychologically abusive?

Is that really what defines abuse? Having to ball up your hand into a fist? Thats nuts because I'm pretty sure I could beat someone bloody with even a open hand.

Wow when was that law made? I could probably kill someone without balling my fists...that is just ridiculous.

QFT. Such beatings (repeated belting, lots of yelling) are not rare at all.

So just because it isn't rare it's fine? How on earth both of you can turn around this to fault the girl is beyond me.

Nobody's faulting the girl, but such beatings are far from abuse, otherwise most Asian parents would have gone to jail already. But of course if you factor in the other shit such as unreasonable demands and prolonged duress over a period of many years from the father then yes its abuse. There is nothing shocking about the video other than the stupidity and close-mindedness of the girls' parents.

and how are they stupid and close minded? its implied in the video that arguments over the computer (or whatever they are fighting over) happened multiple times with fair warning and that it had "come to this" - belt spanking

it only lasted a minute it was a act of discipline what is stupid and close minded about wanting to educate your children to not "lie cheat and steal"

Swearing like that in the face of your 16-year old child counts as stupid in my book.

this.

First the major thing to note that it isn't just the daughter, it's a family problem. He's abusive to everyone in the family.

Second she probably had this happen to her before which is why had the foresight to video tape it just in case.

Why would she want to set up her parents if they were nice people?

She's releasing it now (as an adult) so it isn't like she is some spoiled kid that wants everything and wants to get her parents in trouble.

why are you trying to delve into their entire family history when u don't even know anything about it besides whatever was posted in the OP? im just concerned about what was seen in the video and not ALL the possible implications behind it.

Because there is more information than what is in the OP in the reddit thread and youtube video summary?

And you believe it? just because someone writes a description doesn't make that description true. from what i see it seems that the girl has ulterior motives. it's obvious since she has wasted so long to post this. probably used her parents to fund her through college or something and then waited till just now to drop the bomb as punishment. oh wait are u going to tell me that what i just said isn't necessarily true? i could say the same thing about what was in that description you read or anything really that people are suggesting in this thread it's all conjecture and not fact.

You realize that they are getting most of that information from the girl herself?

Man, that video made me sick. It's also very obvious that the man gets some sort of sexual excitement from beating women. The things he says could come straight out of a BDSM film man :/

Not to mention she is physically handicapped, which makes it even more disturbing. And this guy made it to the top of the legal foodchain? God help us all

So what you're saying is that because Asian parents beat their children and it isn't reported, it isn't abuse? Sounds like flawed logic to me.

This argument seems to be going around a lot, "it happens in asian countries." It's not the same.

The father is obviously getting pleasure out of the beating (refer to r.evo's post), so that makes it child abuse (in my opinion anyway; Florida laws might have something to say about that?)

This is of course in contrast to what happens 'in asian countries' or 'with asian parents'. The punishment that they dish out to their kids is just that; punishment, and while I don't condone it, it's clearly not child abuse. More importantly, the physical punishment generally stops as the child matures, when they become capable of reasoning.

Just because they are common, doesn't make it right.

In Africa, rape and death squads occur daily in some parts. Respect their culture, bro.

While in anthropological circles the idea of ethnocentrism is bad, it doesn't mean we can't subjectively look at a terrible action and rationally judge it as such.

This guy is right. When white people beat their kids its child abuse, but when asian parents beat their children it is simply punishment.

On a more serious note my initial impression (still not certain but I think it was correct) is that the wife in taking the belt and hitting her once was actually doing it to protect her. The way she went about it, but with the little to no conviction in hitting her kinda made me think she was trying to spare her from the fathers wrath.

Any biblical association to the last two words was entirely coincidental!

This kind of punishment is nothing new in most asian cultures, including in Korea. Having been raised with a somewhat strick parents myself, I had been beaten like this and at the time I also thought it was bullshit and all that. But when you grow up, you realize it was really them trying to guide you in the right way, whatever means possible. What kind of parents would enjoy on hitting their child? Before pointing fingers on her parents, you guys should think about how she's resorting to releasing this on the web because they wouldn't let her play "video games".

HOLY SHIT! YOU'RE FUCKING RETARDED!
The video only implies that the father is mad over that SINGLE use of the computer.
He was acting out of anger not discipline, otherwise he wouldn't have said he was going to hit her in the face if she didn't roll over.
Teaching is NOT the same as beating into submission.

When white people beat their kids its child abuse, but when asian parents beat their children it is simply punishment.

This seems to be the general sentiment lol.

I watched the video, didn't read any of the replies, but I know those are two Republicans.
