We are extremely close to shutting down this thread for the same reasons the PUA thread was shut down. While some of the time this thread contains actual discussion with people asking help and people giving nice advice, it often gets derailed by rubbish that should not be here. The moderation team will be trying to steer this thread in a different direction from now on. Posts of the following nature are banned: 1) ANYTHING regarding PUA. If your post contains the words 'alpha' or 'beta' or anything of that sort please don't hit post. 2) Stupid brags. You can tell us about your nice success stories with someone, but posts such as 'lol 50 Tinder matches' are a no-no. 3) Any misogynistic bullshit, including discussion about rape culture. 4) One night stands and random sex. These are basically brags that invariably devolve into gender role discussions and misogynistic comments. Last chance, guys. This thread is for dating advice and sharing dating stories. While gender roles, sociocultural norms, and our biological imperative to reproduce are all tangentially related, these subjects are not the main purpose of the thread. Please AVOID these discussions. If you want to discuss them at length, go to PMs or start a blog. If you disagree with someone's ideologies, state that you disagree with them and why they won't work from a dating standpoint and move on. We will not tolerate any lengthy derailments that aren't directly about dating. | ||

But I think the whole hardass thing is really more prevalent in countries which have a more macho culture (like farvacola said, south and north america). | ||

Age difference only means anything when it results in the both of you being at substantially different points in your life, or different outlooks/frames of mind. Once you really get to know a person and you find a special bond with them, age no longer means anything (unless there's some sub-18 stuff going on here and there's a legal bend to it). It's merely an indicator that you might not be on the same chapters of your respective lives, it doesn't hold any water in and of itself. You already seem to have something pretty good going on with this girl, so there's no reason to be fretting over age, you're all good man. | ||

It is kind of weird how fast the age gap importance disappears after you're both over age 20. A 28y old dating a 21y old is a 7 year difference, but it's usually not seen as a problem at all. While the idea about similar points of life is important, I think the important thing that the people who see an age gap have is more a matter of looks. If you watch anime, every now and then you'll see a character who looks like they're 16, but they say they're 25 or something. People who like younger chicks will know that they're younger, but the assigned age makes them feel better. This would also explain the disappearance of age gap troubles over 20, since the difference in looks becomes rather minuscule compared to young adult and someone in their teens. So while similar places in life is helpful in a relationship with someone who is younger/older than you, it's just as important that they look like they're not that much older/younger than you. | ||

I don't think looks are the problem. There are exceptions to this - my cousin is 18 and her bf is 26 and it looks all kinds of fucked up, but other 18 year olds could easily pass for 20+ and then it's not too bad. For me the problem would be that an 18 year old hasn't even started university yet and has zero clue what she wants from life. I personally changed a lot through uni and I think most people do, a relationship between someone who has finished uni and someone who's still starting rarely works out in my experience. | ||

I guess for the most part it is just the fact that I always was way ahead of most people at my own age so I got used to it and haven't fully realized yet that big changes in perception and maturity are much more spaced out once you reach a certain age/point in your life. | ||
