I used to use a tiny mouse with a ball, absolutely loved it... to death. When it finally broke on me (buttons were finished) I switched to one of them new fangled lazer mice. Didn't notice any difference, but lazers are shiny and don't require cleaning. I'm currently using a plain balless ms mouse, it's average size, larger then my tiny ball one so it fits my handly properly. Either way, they're both comfortable. The only noticeable change to my game setup that had any sort of an impact on my game was when I switched from using a normal mousepad to a table cloth. The diner cloth is a really thick soft fabric (pretty sure it's cotton) that's as comfortable as one of those gel wrist pads. It feels like it gives me better grip and control. I'm absolutely hooked on the table cloth now and bring it around from lan to lan and tend to show if off more then my keyboard or mouse

I use a logitech MX500 and probably wouldn't trade it for anything else. I understand why most people wouldn't like the thing, but for a guy with big hands, it fits like a glove.
