Anyway i grew up listening to bob dylan with my dad and one song that meant a lot to me at the time and still does. Bob dylan wrote this song about the blues legend Blind Willie McTell who past away.

I agree, there should be a rule to that like "The song must be at least 10 years old" or something. Too many of the songs sound nice but carry no real weight, just another flavour of the month/year style of song that noone will remember in a few years.
It'll be very hard to draw the line anywhere because in the end, we're discussing taste. Whether or not a song is moving or important to someone is highly subjective, and four minutes of acoustic insulting for the one guy might be tear-inducing beauty for someone else. Genre, age and other attributes don't neccessarily factor into this.
What could limit the influx of "standard" or "cheap" song links would be the request to anyone posting here to share his or her story with the song, as many people have done before. Unless someone's posting an obviously brilliant classic (Beautiful World, Bohemian Rhapsody etc.), writing down the story of why you think a song belongs in here may make people think twice if the songs fits this thread's idea.
Ye I agree it would be kindda difficult and maybe come off as a dick move. It just cheapens the thread when u see flavour of the week kindda things in here. Its like when people post in that thread about pictures that says more than 1000 words (dont remember the name of the thread) and then proceeds to upload a picture of a guy getting hit in the nuts by a frisbee :D
I'm pretty sure that's not the point the OP was trying to make. either way, I like the idea to write a story of why the said song is so important.
So this song is "Grand Staff - If this is a Dream". GS is a music production company, so just produced the song and doesn't really have anything else.
i was wondering if anyone knew a similar artist. You know, so I can put it into Pandora or Last.fm. A lot of the armin van buuren stuff is a bit old to me, I dunno. It's quite inconsistent, some of it is too 'gay, for lack of better words o_O
As for a song everyone should have...
I'm thinking for metal, anything from House of God CD by King Diamond. For progressive metal, anything by dream theater. For trance I really like Ferry Corstens "Beautiful"

It's quite simple: If people remember a song after 10 years, it must have some weight. Yeah, a lot of the modern songs are ok, too, (well, actually i hate most of the songs, but thats just my personal taste) but they haven't proven that they are unique and good enough to have a long lasting impression on a person and the culture and that they are able to cross over to the newer generation. 5 years is not long enough, 20 would be too long, so i think a "must be at least 10 year old" limit would suit this thread perfectly. A song everyone should have in his playlist should be a song that more than just the currently ~20 year old generation can enjoy.
Well, i won't argue about it any further, if people think everyone should listen to hip hop, rap, techno or dubstep, well, whatever...
Okay this song is a must if you're in your 20's and at the precipice of your life. This was my song when I moved into the city. Whenever I hear this song I feel this burst of fire in my belly and it makes me want to jump out of a plane, or eat some jellyfish, or skinny dip at night, or go for that cute girl at the bookstore, or go hatchery first in zvp on xel naga caverns, or do something that scares the shit out of me and conquer my fear.

Good call - that's pretty much exactly how I feel when I hear that song
Feeling rough, feelin raw in the time of my life Let's make some music, make some money, get some models for wives!
And the most stunning thing about this song is while the opening verse suggests excitement, freedom and fanstastic living it closes with a nostaglic, retrospective look at childhood. Itt serves as an emotional and narrative representation of of this sort of modern, famous lifestyle. It glorifies it yet demeans it. It also demonstrates the confusion between which path in life to take. On one hand, there's the pretentious, desirable journey resulting in ultimate lonliness and early death, and on the other is the mundane, spirit-sucking routine of the commuting, 9-5 worker. This song personifies decision-making, and short-lived joy in young adulthood. This kind of lyricism is rare nowadays. This isn't even taking into account the musicianship that went into this song. You feel indestructible listening to this song before even realizing what it means. I think it's a song that will be remembered a decade from now, and the appreciation for it will only grow throughout the years.
yeah metal has never been a must listen for most people... this thread is so fail, first reply was a fail. a song i think should be in everybody's playlist is Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin, it's pretty classic something that everybody wouldn't mind hearing. I am not a classical music pretentious snob (most of my library is indie rock).
I have three: Two by Emery and one by Mumford and Sons. The two Emery songs have helped shape me into the man I am today. Sigh No More by Mumford and Sons makes me want to become a better version of myself. All the songs give me chills every time I hear it and all have made me tear up.
