Goal: create a comprehensive list of wonderful, fantastic, joy-inducing (or tear-inducing, you get the point) songs that everyone should listen to at least once.
Method: post ONE song (not necessarily your "favorite" or "popular" or "famous") that fits whatever your definition is of a world-class song.
To be honest, I'm not even a Creed fan (not even Christian, I should point out). But if you listen to the lyrics, I think this song hits on, as cliche as it sounds, the intrinsic thought process of what it means to be human. Combined with some very nice guitar chords, I believe you find a song that can last the ages.
Edit 2: if you'd be so kind, post youtube links in a spoiler with the name/artist in text above.
Edit 3: "Guys, please explain why you are posting what you are. Like, what voices or concepts or stories we should be listening for.
We don't all listen to music the same way. Music is about what you relate to. What resonates with you. It's intrinsically meaningless (it's really just a bunch of vibrations), but we give it meaning with the analogies we create in our heads." - Dude.

If anyone wants to make a grooveshark playlist of all music listed in this thread (idea credit: Nefariously) please do so.
In addition, if anyone wants to take this list and split it up by genre that would be cool.
Cool Stuff
This is a quote that I thought really summed up what I hoped to get out of this thread, and I hope that everyone who peruses this list ends up feeling the same way:
"I went through the entire thread. I've seen some amazing contributions and songs I wholeheartedly agreed: "I must have these" but at the same time there's stuff I wouldn't listen to if I were paid to, with no explanation whatsoever either. Thanks to the people who posted some of the most beautiful music I can remember." - Cr4zyH0r5e
Thanks so much to TL User bRuTaL!! for putting this together. Unfortunately the free version of Spotify requires an invitation code, so I will be looking for a source (or a single code) we can all use.
Please PM me for an invite code. I am currently in possession of about 10. First come first served.
"Might want to add to the OP that, at least for me, the invites for Spotify come pretty quickly once you sign up with your email address on the website." - CatharsisUT
Temporary Edit: sorry for not updating recently, just moved into college and haven't had internet, will do my best to stay up on the times.
(its actually preceded by/flows from the song Warrior) from the album Argus, one of my "top 5" music things ever
there are a few versions coz the song is mostly guitar so they play it however they want
Wishbone Ash are a British rock band who achieved success in the early and mid-1970s. They were one of the first of many bands to come who used twin lead guitars.
they are known for their "weaving guitars" and the whole of the album Argus flows from one song to the next and is just perfect (if you get the right version, i got a mixed up version once)
List fucked up in the first reply.. lol. It's impressive, sure, but it sounds terrible and I doubt many people will consider it a "world-class song". Of course, music is subjective....
To me, this goes as "world-class songs" and timeless classics: + Show Spoiler +

And yes, I'm confused by you demanding a world-class song that isn't necessarily popular... wat.
To be honest this is what I anticipated. I was thinking Clapton, Zep, Who, Doors, etc with some of the one hit wonders thrown in (Verve Pipe, Nightranger, etc). But hey, then I got thinking, there has to be some sort of message we can pull from this about our generation if most of these songs are dance/techno. And people are entitled to their own opinion.
EDIT: world class song that isn't necessarily famous - Verve Pipe, The Freshmen. Mungo Jerry, In the Summertime. The Wallflowers, One Headlight. There are lots of lesser known amazing songs.

I don't really see the point of this. Basically I'd just be making a blog post of my Itunes playlist. I'd rather see what my fellow TLers are interested in and add some great music to my library.
If you're interested in particular about some of my favorites, feel free to pm me a genre or time period or band.

You should have added the word "classic" to world class songs then....
For example, the first song that popped into my mind when i read amazing song was: Ratatat, Glock nines
But considering the point of your thread i will go with: Pearl jam, come back

I'm all for people posting whatever they want. World class can mean anything depending on who you ask. Personally I was tempted to post from Biggie to 2pac to Wiz to Kanye. I just went with Creed cause I felt like that outlasts trends and time. And to be honest, if this thread goes long enough I'm confident most super-famous bands and songs will be touched upon.

Considering what you're looking for, your choice of a Creed song seems even stranger than I initially thought. Although, there are certainly some eclectic tastes in this thread.
For me, this question is pretty easy.
Song: "Sister Ray" - Band: The Velvet Underground - Album: White Light/White Heat
This isn't my number 1 favorite song. That being said, if I could force everyone on earth to listen to one song, this would probably it. Find the whole album.

To the contrary, I chose Creed for the same reasoning you chose (that is, if there was one song everyone should listen to...). I expected that every favorite Clapton, Hendrix, Zep, Who song of mine would eventually be posted (Tears in Heaven, All Along the Watchtower, Kashmir, Pinball Wizard if you were wondering).
I'm not sure what you think you're accomplishing with this, but to me it seems like yet another "post your favorite music" thread. There have been already like two dozens of those and oftentimes they get closed, since it's basically impossible to have any real discussion - as music taste is so personal.

Right, it just never occurred to me that love for The Who and Creed could exist in the same person. But like I said, we have eclectic tastes here.

Pandora has been giving me a lot of Townes Van Zandt lately, and I've been liking most of it.
Eh, I'm not a huge Creed fan at all. I just have an immense amount of respect for that song. I think I mentioned earlier, my playlist has an insane range of music on it. I have a large appreciation for everything from Clint Mansell to Kid Cudi to Classic Rock to 90s Rock ... even a decent amount of modern pop-ish songs.
Song changed my life back when it came out. It inspired me to change some things that went wrong in my life and without it I wouldn't be the same as I am today...
Also I picked up playing guitar because of it (even though it's not really a hard song at all)

Well, no offense, but you made a thread called "A SONG EVERYONE SHOULD HEAR" and then prominently featured one of your favorite songs. Don't you think that's the teensiest bit narcissistic? And your goal of having a "comprehensive library of life-changing songs" (...) just the slightest bit over-ambitious?
The amount of passion and confusion and avoidance just resonates well with me.
I grew up in a very avoidance-based society, driven by fear of confrontation and tv's amazing ability to create passive-observers (including myself). This song reminds me how unproductive a lot of my habits are and were, and why it's good to question your life as often as possible.

People only post their favourite song and leave. The problem is everybody wants everybody else to hear their contribution, but they don't care about anyone else's. It makes sense.
The last few pages aren't the best example, but in general it's just people posting their desktops wanting to be 'done' but not doing anyone else's.

That's not narcissistic. Can he not participate in the thread just because he started it?

I love threads like these. I often track threads like these down to see if I can find any music I like I haven't heard before. I find it more entertaining and efficient than other ways of finding good music.
We start this off with Creed. Of all of the Iron Maiden Songs, we have Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. We throw in 30 Seconds to Mars. Starcraft Theme Music? Rick Astley?

I'm not sure if I'm accomplishing anything. But I am at least hoping to expand the musical experience/mind and personal collection of anyone who reads this thread.
dont think theres ever been a thread where people have just posted "ONE" best song at a time. makes it MUUUUCH more user-friendly like this (to me, who doesnt listen to music and just wants a wide variety of perfect suggestions)
People only post their favourite song and leave. The problem is everybody wants everybody else to hear their contribution, but they don't care about anyone else's. It makes sense.
I love threads like these. I often track threads like these down to see if I can find any music I like I haven't heard before. I find it more entertaining and efficient than other ways of finding good music.
Well that's good for you I guess, but I think very few people actually make use of these threads like that.
Well, no offense, but you made a thread called "A SONG EVERYONE SHOULD HEAR" and then prominently featured one of your favorite songs. Don't you think that's the teensiest bit narcissistic?
That's not narcissistic. Can he not participate in the thread just because he started it?
I suppose it's harmless, but don't you see how you can have half TL's population start threads about "listen to this amazing song.. oh and post some of your own if you want to" that are just a front for drawing attention to their favorite music?

Not really. I sounds like you're just looking for something to criticize. As far as "list your favorite X" threads go, this one is working out reasonably well.
Guys, please explain why you are posting what you are. Like, what voices or concepts or stories we should be listening for.
We don't all listen to music the same way. Music is about what you relate to. What resonates with you. It's intrinsically meaningless (it's really just a bunch of vibrations), but we give it meaning with the analogies we create in our heads.
If I don't know why you chose to love the song, then I'll judge it on my circumstances, and it very well could ruin the whole experience for me. Even just 1 sentence of guidance is very much helpful.
I'm at work, so i don't know if this is an ok version:
Bruce Springsteen - The River
It's a song about growing up/getting old and learning that some dreams don't come true. Reliving the memories of a good past while living in world where your dreams are crushed and trying to cope with it. One of the saddest and most powerful songs i know, though maybe it's just my point of view.
It really doesn't matter which one you choose, I'd probably go with Now I'm here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDhTumGxB2w) or Save Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8cYDnthloI)
But in all honesty they have to many great songs to only pick one
I know it is a Japanese song, so might be not too mainstream, but I find that the rhythm, lyrics (look for English subs) and clip can be appreciated in different levels.
LBA 2 is an adventure game where you will have to solve a number of puzzles to save Twinsen's (the main character) planet from being destroyed. It's an old game and I was quite young back then, but it reminds me of how I could put so much fantasy into such a simple game.
Considering your only criteria is "world class" I doubt there will be any intelligent selections. 95% of selections will be of a person's favourtie song for the week.
Maybe 2 songs on the list can compare to the likes of Beethoven's 9th or Bob Dylan's Desolation Row or Miles Davis' All Blues or Van Morrison's Cyprus Avenue etc. These are all songs of unparalled quality that have recaptured hearts and minds generations after their composition and will retain their 'classic' status presumably as long as humans have ears. They are expressions of some of the most beautiful, intelligent and soulful pieces of music every composed.
/elitism
My contribution:
Chances are almost no one will have heard of these guys but maybe someone will enjoy them. Pavement were this groovy indie band that carved a small niche into the scene at a time when it was dominated by Grunge and Alt-rock. None of them were great instrumentalists, the lead singer couldn't sing that well and they achieved no real success. But they had more charm than almost any band I've ever heard. They sound like quirky but sincere Calfornian History/Linguistics majors that got bored in Summer break and kicked around some shit:

Can't believe no one has mentioned Chuck Berry. It's an old song but its still such a great classic song. It's not as deep as some other great songs like Hurt, Imagine but its still one of the best joy inducing songs I know ;D

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog, Rock'n'Roll and When the Levee Breaks.
To expand upon this, The Rain Song is one of the most beautiful songs in the Zeppelin archives. Achilles Last Stand is absolutely mind blowing. Bron Yr Aur is an amazing experience (and the song my cousin is getting married to today) Your Time is Gonna Come + Black Mountain Side (the live versions of these songs are truly exceptional) Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is a great introduction to the vocal style of Robert Plant, his emotion in this song is almost as remarkable as... Since I've Been Loving You which I regard as Robert Plants vocal masterpiece No Quarter is often overlooked but is an amazing composition with its mysterious and elaborate tone
I should probably stop here but if you want to hear part of what Led Zeppelin is about, try these songs.

or, seriously, listen to ALL of Pink Floyd's songs. They are amazing, and some of the genius is in the continuity of the LPs. Especially "Dark Side Of The Moon"
This band everyone needs to listen too. I have seen them live like four times and every time it is an amazingly affirming experience. Ronan is one of the best writers in music today.'
Posting songs is always strange, especially when the only guidelines is it being "good" or "wanting everybody to hear it" because most people shy away from what I find inspiring due to the darkness inherit.
I Am The Walrus. I'd say that A Day in the Life is the greatest song by the Beatles, and it's probably my favorite song of all time. But if I got to say just one song that everyone should listen to (repeatedly, preferably), it has to be that curious little masterpiece.

I don't really like hip-hop that much but this song is just fantastic right from the get-go. I can't imagine anyone hating this song, so that's why I thought it was apropriate to share in this thread.
I was hoping someone would mention VNV Nation. Such an amazing band. I'd like to add one of their songs to this list, as it's one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard and firmly believe that it's something special. I've seen VNV live three times now and every single show has been more than just a concert, but almost a spiritual experience.
The video linked isn't an official music video, but instead the combination of an animated video with song which just fits perfectly.
Porcupine Tree's Arriving Somewhere, But Not Here is one of the songs ever produced. Tell-tale signs of Steven Wilson's up-bringing on Pink Floyd and other 70s prog bands are strewn throughout the song, with his metal and pop influences expertly woven-in as well. Great production value, great blending of styles, amazing pace, epic song. Definitely worth the twelve minutes of your time.
i want people to post songs that they feel should be heard by everyone, not just th things theyre listening to now. thats how i understood this thread.
so simple and uplifting.
cigala, a spanish gipsy. his voice is sick and the song is amazing. do urself a favor and hear the whole thing. another one of cigala's below.
sweet disposition.....i heard this as my plane entered colombia and u could see the mountains and it fit perfectly. great song.
cold play, for some reason this song always gets me. i like the message.
I listen to this when ever I really need to concentrate. It's incredibly relaxing and I don't know why but it helps me focus and channel my thoughts to what ever I need to do. Massively recommend this to people. A lot of Phaelehs other stuff is worth a listen too.
OK, so basically this is taking a painfully long time to make the list in the OP and the length is getting out of hand. Is there anyway someone could put this list on a webpage or something, preferably separated by genre, and I could link to it from the OP? I'd be happy to keep updating the list itself.
I do believe that everyone should have this song just to remember the days of the week and it's annoying and when you show it to a person, they get annoyed :D (Hopefully I don't get warned, I'm totally serious here)

Yeah if you need a song to remember the days of the week use this.
So people have too disparate tastes in music for me to really appreciate all of these, but I knew I should post this song when I thought of it. I'm almost certain someone else already posted it, even though I haven't seen it on the few pages I checked.

I'm not here to judge music tastes. Post it in this thread, I'll put it in the OP list. How my fellow TLers react to a certain song is up to them, and if it is widely recognized as terrible it is easy to identify the poster as a troll.

The climax of one of the greatest concept albums of all time. The way the emotion slowly builds up and then suddenly explodes with power is something that can only be matched by Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees. You must listen to the entire album to fully appreciate it, but alone it is still an amazing piece of work.
In my opinion, Chevelle is one of the most underrated bands out there. Their lyrics are always full of meaning, sung by Pete who has an amazing voice. It's also a 3 man band, which isn't very standard, but I feel that even w/ only one guitar, they managed to take my favorite band spot. Also, don't stop with just this song, it took me like 10 minutes to decide between all of their awesome music, but this is definitely one of my favorites.
The Number Twelve Looks Like You - Cradle in the Crater
Some mathcore to the people! I chose this song because, first of all, I think everyone should at least get to know the genre (if they didn't already) and secondly I actually had a tear-inducing episode when I figured out what it's about. I can't explain it better than the band itself:
Interviewer: "Pick a favourite song from the album and elaborate on its meaning."
Alex: "Cradle In The Crater. It's an intense song, and flows through many moods."
Jesse: "This isn't my song but the song is about my sister's best friend's family's friend whose little brother has a brain tumor. And it's okay if he dies because this world just sucks. It's very emotional."
There were many artists on here i've loved. Some doing sub-par covers of songs that are so powerful they just tore out the emotion too me. maybe this bugged me more, just cause sometimes im a pretentious dick, but The Jeff buckley version of this song pales in compassion.
Maybe not everyone loves romantic/classical music as much as i do, but this is one of my absolute favorites. The poem it's about is super cheesy if you look at it too literally, but you can apply what it says about love to just about anything you like to do, from playing StarCraft to living life in general.
It's a timeless classic and whether or not you realize it or not you've probably heard it at some point in your life. Just listen to it... who says you have to put words to everything?
Also that pop culture song is great, I have always been a fan of sampling and mash ups. Boo to anyone who says a song fails for this thread just because it isn't very popular or because it wasn't made when your Dad was young... this is one song you think everyone should have, not the Rolling Stone Top 500 haha
This one is from the year 1993, from the album "Innercity Griots" of the legendary Freestyle Fellowship. Myka Nyne sings(!) in this one about the life of homeless people and his own experiences living in the streets for a while in South Central LA. I do think this is a song for everyone.
I like most music, but my greatest love is jazz, which doesn't really lend itself to lists like this. But here's some gypsy jazz that I think more people could get behind.
What a fantastic performance of Stochelo Rosenberg's "For Sephora" by The Rosenberg Trio with Biréli Lagrène. Really, I don't think you can ask for more. They're all having fun with the song, Biréli delivers one of the most beautifully tasteful solos I've heard from him, and then he makes a mistake near the end and everyone laughs.
Edit: The song actually starts at 0:32, if you don't want to hear who Sephora is.
WHY: This song has so much fucking heart. Its easily my favorite song of all time. Those of you who do not know of joe strummer, he was the frontman for the clash. (rock the kasbah, london calling, white riot, etc)
The Clash transformed punk rock from a gritty music and fasion lifestyle into a new form of art that had so much meaning and depth to it, that it transcended what the music actually sounded like. Which is why we have a connection between punk and reggae, punk and folk, etc etc.
When the band fell apart, Joe was regarded as the hero of punk rock. He pretty much kept to himself, travelled the world over and over, spent time with his family, and composed music for music's sake, not fames sake.
Then, for the sake of making amazing music, he assembled a band called Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. He incorporated music styles from all over the world that he picked up in his travels, and musicians as well. World music in its most literal form. The band was successful, but not in records sold, or money made... it was a band making music for music. a few years after making this song, Joe suddenly died one december night, right before christmas.
Joe was a shining light in music.. even in the early 2000's when music was seemingly at its bleakest, he broke the mold even in his middle-age. He is a champion for the oppressed, the struggling, and humanity. This song reflects this entirely, it is just so damn pure.
he recorded a cover of redemption song, which the video is a large memorial for joe. which ill also post here; + Show Spoiler +
TLDR; Joe strummer is a hero and redefined punk rock and music forever. This song is the passion of a musician making music for music's sake. Not money nor fame.
Joe is and always will be one of my heroes in life.
Intense, emotional, brilliantly paced experience. It's over 5 minutes long, and not an instant is wasted. I can't guarantee that everyone will love it, but I tear up hearing this song almost every time.

The build up may just knock your socks off.
I remember downloading this song when I meant to buy Blurry by Puddle of Mudd. It's a good song though :D
To this day I still don't know why I love this song so much. Stephan Jenkins (lead singer) described it best - it's a 'nightmare lullaby'. Kind of a parody of modern societies' fascination with violence. If you don't have this background knowledge (or figure it out on your own), it seems like a really f'ed up song.
After Eric Clapton lost his son to a tragic fall from a building he was not himself for the longest time until he wrote this song and released it, such a beautiful song and it was amazing he summed up the courage to do a song about his loss.
Written by Bernie Taupin for his girlfriend it was geniusly well written and beautiful

We have pretty similar Itunes playlists it seems like. It's pretty cool to see the songs people are choosing as their one selection though.
This song works better in context to the rest of the album, but it still works by itself. I just think the message of this song, that your spirit, You, always continue in one form or another. Perhaps not as a literal spirit, but in the thoughts/hearts of those who knew you.

This is a very ominous song by Leadbelly about what will happen if you cheat on him. If you know his history, then you will know that he is more than capable of following through as he shot his cousin for sleeping with his girl.
This is a song that probably only a good guitarist can really appreciate, but anyone can listen to it and enjoy it with an open mind. Not only does it sounds great, but you can appreciate the songwriting and technical skills of Antoine as a guitarist. The sheer talent is truly mind blowing.
Glad to see three people other than me chose Porcupine Tree, and all different songs, too. Really goes to show the strength of their library. Also nice to see King Crimson get the love they deserve. Pink Floyd is an obvious pick as they were pretty mainstream, but King Crimson falls off the radar for a lot of younger listeners.
This is really a case of "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all". So the 1 nice thing after going through 3 pages: Requium of a Dream.
I don't have a song that goes into EVERY library but uh... in the spirit of the thread, I hope this one makes it into yours.
Just one of my favorite songs from Gorillaz. It works best with a good FLAC copy and high quality headphones or other audio equipment. My computer speakers and youtube quality just don't do it justice, but we can say the same for most of the other songs in this thread.
I wanted to post BOTH of those song I swear, but I didn't want to spam or edit my previous post. But yea, great songs. Fear of the dark will ALWAYS remind me of early counterstrike Frag or Die movie FTW, lol
This probably won't appeal to many people because it's without lyrics, but it's a beautiful classic piece by a great japanese composer. + Show Spoiler +
Explanation: This song is played during a critical point in the game towards the end. It really explains the moment and how the hero feels towards his goal. Without any spoilers, it makes you feel like your the hero in this moment, after a huge story line event it makes you feel as though you are the only one who can go on.
edit: to mention, it is an arranged version, so its not the OST. I just prefer this to the original, as i feel it provides a much stronger feeling.
Explanation: As far as the rap/hip hop genre goes, I really haven't found anyone else that so commonly touches on real themes without the excessive bullshit and is able through the rhythm, music, and lyrics to elicit the type of raw emotion that I feel when I listen to his songs. Eminem has really grown from a gimmicky white kid talking bullshit into one of the finest rappers of our generation. He really does have the rare ability to take you into his mind and his message with his songs. I feel that's really what's given him a type of lasting appeal and why I feel that people should listen to him.

Explanation: Another song that I think everyone should hear at least once. Particularly on the internet, we have a way of being insensitive, callous, and downright hateful and we often forget that our words and actions carry responsibility in how we affect others. I think it's important for music to connect us with reality and in the case of "Youth Of The Nation" and "How To Save A Life", it serves as a reminder to us about the plight of others that so often go unnoticed until tragedy strikes.
OP should have bolded what he wanted us to do, since most people are just embedding a video with no explanation etc.
That being said, I was under the impression most of TL was a lot more heavy into euro metal, prog rock, and electro/glitch kind of music. Never knew most of the population is into classic rock it seems.
One of greatest songs everyone should have in my opionion is Moonchild by M83
This song is just so calming and aspiring. I pretty much need to listen to music like this during sc2 ladder lol. But if you just want some nice chill music this definitively hits that mark.

I am not much of an anime fan, but one of the things I'm glad I found from watching it when I was much younger was this soundtrack, and, frankly, anything Yoko Kanno creates that Steve Conte sings.
Also nthing everything Queen, for the same reason as Freddie Mercury singing anything is absolutely fantastic. Special mention to:
Which is easily my favorite song ever and has been for many years.
I didn't scour this thread to see if anyone has posted this yet.
This song is what got me to go to a different high school than all my good friends and devote most of my time to practice/study of classical guitar (in addition to all the other curricular shit).
This to me is the premier sound of the romantic era of classical guitar.
I'm going to cheat and post two, but the first one isn't really cheating -- somebody already posted it, I just had to add an explanation.
I'm hardly the biggest Radiohead fan in the world, but I can't deny how important and amazing this song is. This is one of those rare songs that gets more relevant as time goes on, as opposed to less. In vague, almost incomprehensible terms it describes our relationship with technology and the corporate machine, supposedly coming from the point of view of a robot, yet somehow seems all the more human for it. Going from detached creepiness to rage to sorrow, this song covers the gamut but only benefits from the schizophrenia. The melody in the Rain Down section never fails to send chills all over my body. Bonus YouTube mix version in spoilers. That this song means so many different things to so many people only proves how essential it is.
I lack the words to express how this song makes me feel. Simultaneously hopeless and fearful, optimistic and courageous, half-dead and more than alive. I've never heard anything like it.
Here's a song from my favorite band, I honestly believe they have better songs than this one (they're a local band so not on youtube much) but this one is still incredibly inspiring, hits close to home for me, and gives me so much energy whenever I see them live:
I went through the entire thread. I've seen some amazing contributions and songs I wholeheartedly agreed: "I must have these" but at the same time there's stuff I wouldn't listen to if I were paid to, with no explanation whatsoever either. Thanks to the people who posted some of the most beautiful music I can remember.
Yann Tiersen - Sur le Fil
Why? Listen to the violin, the passion it's played with, the technical difficulty of the way he plays it, and pay attention to the different feelings it brings out in you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MQ6nx2HrV0 Listen to that song and the lyrics especially and tell me that it didn't move you. Plus I think the acoustic version sets a better feel to it, but the regular version is fine too.
I doubt there's too many people out there on TL who really like that sort of music, but you should all check it out. I love dubstep and trance and all that sort of stuff, but those two songs are incredible and everybody should at the very least listen to those.
Also, every music library should contain The Beatles. Lots of The Beatles.
Slower song about love and loss. The lyrics hint at a strained relationship between a father and son that wasn't mended in time, but the general mood you get from it is applicable to any feelings of loss you might have, be it romantic, familial, or otherwise. Especially great at the twilight hours or when you're feeling contemplative.
As a sidenote, if someone were to compile these songs into a zip file, i'd download it in a second... a brave, brave soul...
One of my favorite songs I've ever listened to. The song just takes me to a different place. No words necessary. The whole song is amazing throughout, but especially after the 4:50 mark.
I know a lot of people don't like rap. I don't listen to much of it, but this song I could listen to all day. You really have to look at the lyrics to get the full message. I like'd one of the comments on the youtube page.
"How could any one dislike this, this song has one meaning and its DON'T LET ANY ONE TELL YOU WHAT ANY ONE THINKS OF YOU, YOU ARE THE ONE THAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL"
In a sense, that person is correct. And at the end of the song Em' says " God gave you them shoes, to fit you so put them on and wear them..and be yourself man. Even if it sounds corny, Don't ever let no one tell you, you ain't beautiful

Great song. I hate a lot of rap, except for a few like eminem, tupac, jay z. I can't stand assholes like Lil Wayne. Anyways, great message indeed.
Not necessarily a song, but possibly one of the best pieces of music written ever (in my opinion of course), and should be a part of anyone's collection (in fact, the whole original trilogy's soundtrack should be).
EDIT: The part in the movie where Obi-Wan says "Use the Force, Luke!" gives me chills/almost tears every time.
Just want to say, I think this thread is an absolutely amazing idea. I've been through about half of the list so far, and there are so many songs that bring back amazing memories, and new ones that I had never heard before; yet are equally as awesome as the rest.
This song means a lot, as in my childhood, I played this game an absolute tonne and still listen to the Golden Sun OSTs to this day, they're just so full of energy and fast paced; one of the things I absolutelyy adore about them. Nerd chill central when I listen to 'em
Love the idea of this thread but so many of these suggestions are just basic pop garbage music with no significant meaning or cultural importance. They might be good for some people but they are really not music everybody should listen to :D
Anyway i grew up listening to bob dylan with my dad and one song that meant a lot to me at the time and still does. Bob dylan wrote this song about the blues legend Blind Willie McTell who past away.
I absolutly love everything about this song, the sound, the lyrics, EVERYTHING! The first time i heard it was about 1 week after i broke up with the first girl i ever loved and i could totally relate to everything in the song.
I cant stress enough how much i love this song, and i think everyone needs to hear it atleast once!
I wholeheartedly agree with this. Eminem is such a talented talented writer...
I don't know how
Tupac - Changes never made it on that list already, song is iconic and is about equality etc. Tupac, legend.
This ain't no easy task, but after a small time of consideration i was able to choose:
The Waterboys - Whole of the moon
With a dedicated singer with a special yet beautiful voice, catching lyrics, a superb arrangement and a simple yet kickass intro. I can listen to this the whole day, it's something special about it.
It's THE anthem of indie rock throughout the 80s, inspired a lot of great bands, like Nirvana for example, and sonic youth just are one of the most important bands for punk, noise, avantgarde and so much more.

I agree, there should be a rule to that like "The song must be at least 10 years old" or something. Too many of the songs sound nice but carry no real weight, just another flavour of the month/year style of song that noone will remember in a few years.
For the more electrified and modern kind: The Killers - Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont Mix)
For those who can appreciate it: Frank Sinatra - What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life
Not trying to upset anyone. People have different tastes in music, and I think both are phenomenal in their own right. So I picked two songs that should apply to the diverse majority.

It'll be very hard to draw the line anywhere because in the end, we're discussing taste. Whether or not a song is moving or important to someone is highly subjective, and four minutes of acoustic insulting for the one guy might be tear-inducing beauty for someone else. Genre, age and other attributes don't neccessarily factor into this.
What could limit the influx of "standard" or "cheap" song links would be the request to anyone posting here to share his or her story with the song, as many people have done before. Unless someone's posting an obviously brilliant classic (Beautiful World, Bohemian Rhapsody etc.), writing down the story of why you think a song belongs in here may make people think twice if the songs fits this thread's idea.

Ye I agree it would be kindda difficult and maybe come off as a dick move. It just cheapens the thread when u see flavour of the week kindda things in here. Its like when people post in that thread about pictures that says more than 1000 words (dont remember the name of the thread) and then proceeds to upload a picture of a guy getting hit in the nuts by a frisbee :D
I'm pretty sure that's not the point the OP was trying to make. either way, I like the idea to write a story of why the said song is so important.
So this song is "Grand Staff - If this is a Dream". GS is a music production company, so just produced the song and doesn't really have anything else.
i was wondering if anyone knew a similar artist. You know, so I can put it into Pandora or Last.fm. A lot of the armin van buuren stuff is a bit old to me, I dunno. It's quite inconsistent, some of it is too 'gay, for lack of better words o_O
As for a song everyone should have...
I'm thinking for metal, anything from House of God CD by King Diamond. For progressive metal, anything by dream theater. For trance I really like Ferry Corstens "Beautiful"

It's quite simple: If people remember a song after 10 years, it must have some weight. Yeah, a lot of the modern songs are ok, too, (well, actually i hate most of the songs, but thats just my personal taste) but they haven't proven that they are unique and good enough to have a long lasting impression on a person and the culture and that they are able to cross over to the newer generation. 5 years is not long enough, 20 would be too long, so i think a "must be at least 10 year old" limit would suit this thread perfectly. A song everyone should have in his playlist should be a song that more than just the currently ~20 year old generation can enjoy.
Well, i won't argue about it any further, if people think everyone should listen to hip hop, rap, techno or dubstep, well, whatever...
Okay this song is a must if you're in your 20's and at the precipice of your life. This was my song when I moved into the city. Whenever I hear this song I feel this burst of fire in my belly and it makes me want to jump out of a plane, or eat some jellyfish, or skinny dip at night, or go for that cute girl at the bookstore, or go hatchery first in zvp on xel naga caverns, or do something that scares the shit out of me and conquer my fear.

Good call - that's pretty much exactly how I feel when I hear that song
Feeling rough, feelin raw in the time of my life Let's make some music, make some money, get some models for wives!
And the most stunning thing about this song is while the opening verse suggests excitement, freedom and fanstastic living it closes with a nostaglic, retrospective look at childhood. Itt serves as an emotional and narrative representation of of this sort of modern, famous lifestyle. It glorifies it yet demeans it. It also demonstrates the confusion between which path in life to take. On one hand, there's the pretentious, desirable journey resulting in ultimate lonliness and early death, and on the other is the mundane, spirit-sucking routine of the commuting, 9-5 worker. This song personifies decision-making, and short-lived joy in young adulthood. This kind of lyricism is rare nowadays. This isn't even taking into account the musicianship that went into this song. You feel indestructible listening to this song before even realizing what it means. I think it's a song that will be remembered a decade from now, and the appreciation for it will only grow throughout the years.
yeah metal has never been a must listen for most people... this thread is so fail, first reply was a fail. a song i think should be in everybody's playlist is Fantasie Impromptu by Chopin, it's pretty classic something that everybody wouldn't mind hearing. I am not a classical music pretentious snob (most of my library is indie rock).
I have three: Two by Emery and one by Mumford and Sons. The two Emery songs have helped shape me into the man I am today. Sigh No More by Mumford and Sons makes me want to become a better version of myself. All the songs give me chills every time I hear it and all have made me tear up.
I am suprised that no one has mentioned stuff such as crazy train from ozzy osbourne or other songs like nookie from Limp Bizkit (it had a definitive style) or even the hotstepper from ini kamoze (everyone knows this song). I guess you could add riders of the storm from the doors too?
I picked a cover because I love this rendition of the song. The guitar intro is just awesome to hear and play, and the song itself makes me lighter and carefree.
I picked this song because it just makes me freaking happy. This is one of the reasons I am able to play and loose without ragequitting and going berserk on my furniture. If you like it, the creators site is http://www.dolkow.se/. In my opinion he deserves a lot more listeners than he has for the awesome stuff he's making.
One of the greatest works that came out of Sweden, and guitar musicianship. One of my favourite songs of all time. You won't regret each second of play.
One of my absolute favourites, just had the album on repeat recently. The song is just so melodic, many catchy riffs with Jon's vocals just make the atmosphere just so dark.
cool, yesterday i remembered this song - without seeing it in this thread! i heard it about 10 years ago when i would come home from school and put on the german music channel on our dodgy hacked satellite TV so i could listen to proper music instead of british radio pop
give it a chance past the first 10-15 seconds, starts out just sounding like a rap song, but its a really nice electro song, or electro rap w/e you want to call it
I like relaxing music. Something I can put on and it can change my mood into just relax mode. I am always highly stressed ( no clue why it is just how I am ) so listening to love music and reggae and music like that really helps me.
Blind Melon is one of the best Hippie Bands to ever exist. Perhaps their most famous single being No Rain. I hope you all enjoy it.
There's a few of them, some of them based in nostalgia and others that just have to be listened to, the ones that are life changing and saving.
The most underrated group in history, and honestly I wouldn't have it any other way because their underground tracks are my secrets... But this song makes the list so here it is. Falls neatly into the life-saving category:
Have you ever seen a sound have you listened to an image have you every touched a thought have you ever tasted nothing have you ever told a lie that was true more than truth because truth had lied all its life when it spoke to you?
[EXPLANATION]This song we've all heard, but years ago, on one fateful night to remember, to this day also. Mother and Daughter, mother = drug addict and said that this song made her cry everytime because its how she felt about the way she was towards her daughter, and since my mother is the same, everytime i hear it i apply it in the voice of my mother to myself because I know this is how she feels but will never be able to express it. I love you mom!
I might be an EDM junkie, but boy do I love the more emotional sub-genres of metal. I went through a lot of house music, but I guess my contribution will be this :
It's not everyday music, but I think this list is not supposed to be played at anytime with your foobar/winamp on random - but is instead filled with gems. This is one fore sure
Yoko Kanno is an amazing composer. Just gotta add on the subject of cowboy bepop; This song is really short, has a really simple structure and induces so incredibly much nostalgia in me that I can barely handle it. I think it qualifies for the list.

Apparently there is a cult hatred of all that is Creed so, even though this thread has seen about every type of music possible, let me explain myself in the hopes that I don't see another troll thread about it again.
Let me start with something simple: just because you don't like a band doesn't mean it can't produce one or two great songs. Sure, Creed is a Christian rock band. But, the message this song conveys is a universal tale of happiness, blessing, and courage. I don't see why just because you're not Christian (I happen to be Agnostic, FYI) you can't appreciate both a) a good song with good chords and b) a beautiful underlying message.
My library happens to be full of just about everything - Skrillex, Mungo Jerry, The Who, Clint Mansell. Just about every type of music you could imagine. I picked the song not because it's super famous and timeless (I could easily pick, for instance, Stairway to Heaven - which two or three people have already posted) but because I feel everyone can relate to it.

So, yes, I know, that's Metal which means for most people stupid noise with horrendous vocals but please, give this song a chance because it's an absolute master piece of music in general. That's 13 minutes of the most incredible guitar work you'll probably ever hear in your life.
And if you have access to a better quality than Youtube (Spotify, etc), please do yourself a favor because this song deserves it

Thanks for that :D I can't say I've been listening to every song, but when I am going through to make the list I am sampling as many as I can (and listening to the whole song if I like the first minute a lot). I think I've added 25-30 songs to my library from this thread. Which is only like 10%, but hey, no one likes everything.
I wouldn't consider myself a big hip-hop fan, but for some reason this song really impressed me. It's by Mos Def and Talib Kweli (under the name BlackStar). Most people who know hip hop should know who Mos Def is, but for some reason Talib Kweli is remarkably underrated (despite him being very skilled lyrically). The background track is very good, and the feel of the song is very relaxing. But ultimately what draws me in are the lyrics. Kweli has amazing lyrical flow (imo), and Mos Def is killing also. I could tell you what the song is about, but perhaps its better if you find your own meaning it. Roughly, you could say it's a criticism of our society and culture.
To fully enjoy this you should just let the beat move your body and listen to the lyrics. You don't need to listen too closely or anything (this isn't a lecture), but don't ignore them.
Yes! I saw him live recently, he was fucking amazing! The set was kinda short, especially for a DJ (i guess normal if you compare him to like a typical band though), but he really felt the crowd and played quite a bit longer for us.
I mean his new stuff was meh, but live it was still at least pretty decent.
To the guy that posted Agalloch, they are pretty awesome I just found out about them. Reminds me a lot of Opeth.
Everything by Frost* is pretty amazing, but Milliontown is the easiest song to sum them up with, although it is really long. For something shorter but still representative of their style try Hyperventilate. Link to part 1/3: + Show Spoiler +
I might be a bit biased towards prog rock since I've got wierd head things going on and am apparently a very strong musical empathy thing (psychologist speak for I like music? :p), but the sheer amount of emotion in all the various sections in Milliontown always make me stop whatever I'm doing and just sit there tingling :D. Also, the rhythmic breakdown in the last section is awesome. And hyperventilate is for those of you who might not enjoy the singer that much , pure instrumental prettiness all the way through. Enjoy :3
Great to see so much Porcupine tree love as well. Where's the Studio Ghibli music at though? Every single one of those piano compositions makes me cry :p

I have to agree with this. It begun good with Johnny Cash but then it went down the hill. Also... before posting... This song carries such fierce emotional power behind it, it's impossible for even the most cultured and refined individual to feel it's artistic might. This story of triumphant conquer completely embodies the persistent motif of strength and independence found throughout heavy metal. Messages of personal empowerment and conquest are delivered in a way that reaches deep through the listeners incorporeal "spirit". The music is a brutally technical flow, like the combined power and grace of a crashing waterfall. I can't help but feel my skin crawl every time I listen to this track.
To the untrained ear, some death metal lyrics can be difficult to comprehend. For the full enjoyment experiencing this song, read along + Show Spoiler +
The warming sun returns again And melts away the snow The sea is freed from icy chains Winter is letting go
Standing on the ocean side We can hear the waves Calling us out with tide To sail into our fate
Oden! Guide our ships Our axes, spears and swords Guide us through storms that whip And in brutal war
Our ships await us by the shore Time has come to leave Our country, family and homes For riches in the east
Some of us won't return But that won't bring us down Our fate is written in the web Woven by the Norns
A ram is sacrificed Across the longship's bow And as we set our sails A strong breeze starts to blow
It carries us out to sea With hope of fame and pride And glorious all will be That with sword in hand will die
Oden! Guide our ships Our Axes, spears and swords Guide us through storms that whip And in brutal war
Oden! Guide our ships Our axes, spears and swords Guide us through storms that whip And in brutal war
I think this can really speak to people when they read along.. I'm not sure what to think of this, but I'm sure anyone who listens will find their own meaning. But yes, I know the subject of the song dies. Embrace of the Endless Ocean vid+ Show Spoiler +
Jesus Etc. by Wilco. It was released on the album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002 not long after 9/11 though the songs were written before the attacks a lot of the lyrics were oddly prophetic but comforting to a hurt America. Whenever they play Jesus Etc. Live you'll struggle not to sing along with the entire crowd. This is a must have, beautiful lyrics, and beautiful song from the best American band around today.
*edit* posted a version where you can really hear the crowd.

I saw these guys live with Reel Big Fish this summer and I saw them last summer with a bunch of random bands and they were honestly two of the greatest nights of my life. I love the way Ska sounds, but the stuff that Streetlight sings about is so much more real then the stuff that bands like Reel Big Fish or The Mighty Mighty Bosstones sing about.

I listen to everything, my workout music is heavy metal/melodic death metal. But that does not justify posting it in "this" thread :D.
I disagree completely. There is newer music that everybody can enjoy. Sure, every iPod should be loaded with The Beatles, The Ramones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Ozzy and songs like Carry On My Wayward Son or Sweet Child O' Mine, but there's plenty of other great music that I think everybody should have.
Hell, my dad would NEVER listen to Ozzy Osbourne, but he loves the Ramones and listens to them all day. Alternatively, I have a friend who swears that he hates the Ramones and others that hate The Beatles (don't ask me why, I don't understand it any more than you do), does that mean that they can't be included on this list?
Dispatch is a band that is from around ten years ago, but I think everybody should listen to them at least once. I think it's pretty difficult to find a band that sounds like them at all, but just because they're not as old as other music they somehow don't deserve to be here? Hell at Dispatch 2011, despite most of the crowd probably being in their 20s-young 30s, there was still some 60 year old ladies sitting about three rows in front of me who were enjoying the music as much as anybody.
Same thing with Streetlight Manifesto (though they're a bit more of an acquired taste, but that's just ska music), they're a really great band that has a very unique sound and message; so what if they're not ten years old. This is really just to compile a list of music that everyone should listen to at least once, just to give it a try (at least that's what OP states if you read it). It's not necessarily the most memorable songs of all time, but it just so happens that all those songs are music that everybody should listen to.
EDIT: Also, best Blink-182 song def deserves to be here, and everybody who's ever been a teenager can relate to this. Blink-182 Dammit: + Show Spoiler +

The second movement of Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G is, in my opinion, the most beautiful piece of music ever written. This particular recording was played by one of the greatest pianists of all time (Krystian Zimmerman) with one of the best orchestras in the world (Cleveland).

I love the way Ska sounds, but the stuff that Streetlight sings about is so much more real then the stuff that bands like Reel Big Fish or The Mighty Mighty Bosstones sing about.

Anyway i grew up listening to bob dylan with my dad and one song that meant a lot to me at the time and still does. Bob dylan wrote this song about the blues legend Blind Willie McTell who past away.
Bob Dylan - Blind Willie McTell
I agree, there should be a rule to that like "The song must be at least 10 years old" or something. Too many of the songs sound nice but carry no real weight, just another flavour of the month/year style of song that noone will remember in a few years.
I have to agree with this. It begun good with Johnny Cash but then it went down the hill. Also... before posting... When you read the title: "A Song EVERYONE Should Have In Their Music Library" You should read: Would a 10-50 year-old somebody (anybody) run the f*ck away from if they hear this at a public place.
I don't feel like you're seeing the same point in the thread title. I like streetlight manifesto, and ska is a type of music that I would say everyone should give a shot at enjoying. That said, I wouldn't expect everyone or even the vast majority to decide they did enjoy it. This thread seemed to me to be about songs that EVERYONE should enjoy. Now obviously you are going to get the odd hater who doesn't like the Beatles, beethoven, w/e. Still, the songs that were made more than a decade ago and yet still remain a part of the public consciousness have a certain broad appeal that flavor of the month stuff doesn't. Take, for example, fortunate son by CCR. It wasn't the top song when it came out, but it is an amazing piece of music that is still played after other songs released that year are forgotten. There is contemporary music that will stand the test of time, I'm sure, but it is difficult to say what that is, and certainly most people don't have the sense for it.
Anyway, that said, I'll contribute again with this song that I only found out about a few weeks ago, but I doubt I'll ever forget.
Song: What did you learn in school today?
Artist: Pete Seeger ( not the original, but best I found on youtube)
Since sigur r'os is allready well represented (imo the best album made is ageatis byrjun) I'll just go with a little song by the national, fake empire.
I'll also post this little bit of music by one of the most underappreciated bands of old (lolol disco), namely the Bee Gees' holiday (from the album "1st")
Music is such a personal thing. My personal song is ”寂寞寂寞就好“ by 田馥甄 (Hebe Tian), such a heart-wrenching piece teeming with sadness and somewhat morbid (slightly dark-humourous) lyrics.
No Youtube where I am, sorry.
PS, whoever suggested Olivia Ong, kudos to you! Her voice is incredible. (And yes, I am Chinese and therefore biased, ^_^)
This song gives me chills all over my body every single time I listen to it, even after listening to it over 100 times. The last 2-3 minutes of the song after listening to the whole thing is amazing and I get chills throughout the whole second half of the song. + Show Spoiler +
Based on the Wheel of Time books. Helps to know what they are about to understand the lyrics but honestly I think the song is even better than the books (not that I don't like the books, but they don't give me nerds chills like this song does).
*edit : I feel it's a type of music that's pretty open overall which is why I posted it btw. Not really heavy even if it is metal.
This song. Without a doubt, I can listen to it constantly, and never stop. Even if you hate metal and BFMV and everything in that genre, this song is simply beautiful. Should be heard by all. It is just fantastic. Enjoy.
I like to think that good music tells a story. This song is emotionally provocative, complexly arranged, and short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome.
this isn't my favorite song, but i feel it belongs in here (hopefully some people listen to it, as i feel bond is amazing and under-appreciated)
i never thought an instrumental could get my adrenaline pumped so much, and make me feel like doing something productive.. or be so motivational (if you don't get the feeling, try listening to it in a car with a good system while you're driving)
Hell, you know what, anything off of Kid A. That album is absolutely amazing, probably the best out of Radiohead. (Yeah, I know, I didn't like OKC as much as everybody seems to give it acclamation for.) + Show Spoiler +
Toccatas tend to be show-off pieces, both for the skill of an organist and for the capabilities of his instrument. While other Bach compositions can be quite complex, his toccatas are very accessible even if you are not used to listening to baroque music.
This particular work is less known than Bach's famous Toccata and Fuge in D minor BWV 565. Give it some time at the beginning, it starts off rather slowly (including a lengthy pedal solo) before building up to a grandiose finale. If you are very impatient, skip forward to the last two minutes of the recording.
Don't forget to crank up the volume, this needs some loudness.
EXPLANATION: Despite being one of the first songs that I truly enjoyed over 10 years ago, it still remains one of my favorite songs of all time. This song taught me the beauty and gentleness that music can have. While the lyrics are written with a lover in mind, it can certainly be extrapolated to the idea of never forgetting past friendships while maintaining a hopeful look into the future. It's certainly a song I always listen to to remind myself that memories and bonds are not easily broken by distance or time.
btw, I noticed To Zanarkand is on the list. Nobuo Uematsu is the composer of that song. No artist since no lyrics though.
The Cruxshadows haven't been mentioned yet - am I the only one that listens to them a lot? + Show Spoiler +
Look at your life, who do you want to be before you die? Look at your life, what do you want to do? Look at your life, who do you want to be before you die? Look at your life, you haven't got forever
... and last, a sick song with a disturbing message, that I can't help liking even though I hate the people behind it ...
I just thought of something. Because the, "EVERYONE," in the title is so emphasized (being all capital letters), I assume you mean, "Everyone." Since not everyone speaks the same language, doesn't that mean that any song with spoken lyrics can't really be on this list? Only instrumentals?

Hm not sure, you don't nessecarily have to understand a language to 'get' the song. Don't know if that makes sense.
For me, I think a world class song would be Marvin Gaye's Let's get it on. Here is a prime example of that, from a performance that segues directly into "what's happening brother"
Someone mentioned a great song Ferry Corsten - Beautifuil, found a great guitar cover for this great technoish song, amazing atmosphere here. And of course a great guitarist, who's band is nothing like this song lol, really shows the amount of versatility one can have. Please Enjoy. Also love the lyrics, even though theres not many tee hee.

This is true, I listen to some Korean music and don't understand it at all, but still love the atmosphere and emotion in some songs.
It's a masterpiece that few will ever listen to just because of its sheer length. ^^;; I remember listening to this all day when it first came out, though. Takes me back...
you're posting things like pink floyd, jimi hendrix, phil collins, and all sort of music everyone knows already. all this such a wide range that _noone_ will come here thinking:"i want to hear some nice rock/techno/house/pop/metal/[insert style]", because every "related videos list" on youtube is far more interesting than the music in this thread. it would make far more sense to make a music thread for every music style, e.g. "remember the 70's", "lost house pearls", "death metal lives", "4 to the floor - pumpin' all night", "romantic tunes", "unplugged" etc
The reason I define this as a "world-class" song is because even though it doesn't have lyrics, the music video conveyed a message to me: though we obtain more and more things through our life time (whether its objects or people), there's always that one thing in our lives. That one thing that makes us happy, or gives us peace of mind.
there are 400+ songs.. it is a huge work doing the playlist :/ maybe it should be split in pieces of 100 songs since you can merge playlists with grooveshark i think. Also: + Show Spoiler +

In Flames - Starforsaken This band used to be good, but its kinda sad that their last good album was released 14 years ago(YES everything after Whoracle is terrible). This is an example of how In Flames are supposed to sound. .+ Show Spoiler +
Holy shit yes, I support this. I definitely remember getting nerd chills when playing through this part of the game while hearing the music, and the epic conclusion too.
Have to throw this in here, being on of the sexiest saxes in music, some goerge michaels! i just, love this sax so much, humming it all day, too bad i only listen to the 1st 30 seconds over and over!
similar to the song I posted previously, this song is just really positive and amazing for positive thinking. music like this always helps me when I'm having a hard time.
A few favorites of mine have already been posted. I'll fall back to the best metal song of all time (in my opinion), a song about surviving the death of a loved one. Lyrics are deep, soft and hard parts alternate as do sorrow and anger, and the guitar parts are memorable.
Pantera - Cemetery gates
Honorable mention to Rainbow - Stargazer, an amazing song about leadership which also should be heard by all.
Man what a nightmare mix of different tastes. I can't tell if half of these are trolls or real preferences. I'm usually pretty supportive on this forum, but I really couldn't see anything coming out of this thread... but what would be the equivalent of pizza with ice cream, sauerkraut, marshmallows, sardines, peanutbutter, and pickles. You really can't trust people to honestly contribute these days.
This song because first of all it's an amazing song but also everyone thinks about some romancy/cute stuff but really it's about heroin. Makes you look at the song in a different way and really brings out the lyrics.
1) It's just beautiful. 2) If u want to die, just listen to this and u'll understand how it's beautiful to kill yourself but after this there will be nothing. It's life and every bad thing in your life is beautiful. Only a contrast between good and bad things makes this life beautiful...
It's a good thing that people have thinned out the list of great songs to pick, or I'd have gone straight for some ACDC or CCR, but as it stands I think I'll go with one of the classic love-songs:
This is just a song that never fails to relax me if I've had a stressful day or just need to calm down. The chorus of it just gives me chills almost every time. Every one should really give the "Rumours" album of Fleetwood Mac a listen through, it's immaculate.
There's something about this song that just makes me play starcraft better...I don't know what it is, but a great artist weather you like electronica or not, really.
This is a song that speaks to anyone who's been lost before. I have to admit some bias (EPIC Paul Simon fanboy) and was tempted to put Graceland but this is possibly the song that's touched me the most in all the music I've heard.
A personal favourite that offsets the last song . This is the composer playing it (starts at 30 seconds) It's called Dr Zomboss' Revenge by Laura Shigihara

Absolutely, I love that band, and that song is one of their best
I also think this song is very beautiful, even if you didn't like the game (the main menu music)
Both songs been posted already but here are imo better versions (covered by a hot girl ) than the original. I like it more because you can hear more of the guitar and not the lyrics. I like the "guitar" language more than what mere mortals ever can produce out of their mouth.
Metallica - Enter Sandman **(on my ipod I replaced the original with the mp3 from this video <3)**
Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
She has several channels on youtube with tons of covers, all of VERY high quality.
I don't know what it is about this song it just makes me really really happy when I listen to it. I recommend listening to the whole thing, it gets awesome at the end <3

There's no such thing as an instrumental song.
As for songs without lyrics, I think this one would prevail easily :
I'm dedicating myself to listening to every song in this thread. I finished page 3, going onto page 4. Thought I'd post some music as well. Gonna post songs that target a very wide audience, but are not too popular.
Gaaaah Can't decide the song to use THE GLITCH MOB Here's my explanation, basically I love electronic music, but could never get into dubstep because it's just too harsh and I like me some melodies. This is heavier than most of my stuff, but still very melodic here i'll give this song i guess.
Though I've posted this particular one in the metal thread before, I feel like it should be brought up here, for those less "metallically-inclined". Torche is basically a pop-sludge band, at their best sounding like the Foo Fighters run through an Eyehategod filter. This is easily one of their most accessible songs, and absolutely anthemic in every way. It's impossible not to sing the chorus every time I hear it, I dare you to not air drum for the entire last minute of the song. Feel-good metal at its best.
Really awesome thread, hopefully this song hasn't been posted yet.
Artist: Rolling Stones Name: Paint it Black Explanation: Definitely one of those songs that you absolutely have to hear, rolling stones are awesome and this is one of their best songs, imo. Just really beautiful lyrics, guitar chords, mellow feel, etc just an awesome song. + Show Spoiler +
*edit1* Also I don't think The Doors - The End has been posted, have to include this one guys. + Show Spoiler +
This is the song that got me into metal. So peaceful, but at the same time so intense. I love the outro, especially the version that doesn't fade out at the end.
Saw this in the list and had to say, while it is good it pales in comparison (in my opinion) with other songs from the game, namely Potential for Anything and Predestined Fate.
Positive Force to me is exactly like its name, it is a positive force pushing you in the right direction towards your goal.
Predestined Fate makes me think of an intense and epic battle.
Potential for Anything is like having a magical journey through space.
Sorry to post two, but each are amazing in their own way.
I only recently got into Rush, but this song is possibly one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. Don't be scared of the length, it's worth listening to at least once. It's absolutely incredible. The lyrics tell the story of a man in the year 2112 living under the united government known as the Solar Federation, a totalitarian theocracy, and what happens when the man finds a musical instrument (a guitar), a relic from long ago.
Okay, so it's not that the album that this title track is from isn't great. It is, really. But if the entire album consisted of songs like this, it would be nothing short of the rebirth of rock and roll as we know it. It's like Led Zepplin grew a pair and woke up some time in the 2000's. Retro yet immediate. Absolutely gripping. Enjoy it.
Do you own a good subwoofer? And by that I mean a legit car audio or home theater sub, not some htib thing. If so, listen to this at loud volumes. It is one hour twenty-five minutes and forty-one seconds of awesomeness. Those with good systems will thank me in your wills for showing you this. Blasting this on my klipsch 5.3 system (yes 3 subs) is a bass massage.
Ps. get high and listen, will blow your damn mind.
It's the right combination of modern rock ballad and orchestral arrangement that just feels right. It brightens my day when I'm not feeling well and has a soothing effect when I'm stressed out.
Is in my top 10 songs of all time.
The Lyrics are one of Axl Rose's finest. A story of a love that was lost and the recovery afterward.
The combination of rock ballad picks up into one of the finest bits of guitar work of the last 20 years. Ends on an epic break down.

Some songs that I really like, but that don't necessarily appeal to everyone. Some of the songs I love because of the memories connected with them.

There's only one song that I think everyone can truely appreciate/somewhat-relate to..
Jason Derulo really popularized this song, but his remix can't even compare. Such a heartbreaking song about a divorce.. What's really captivating is there's actually no music, but they actually auto tune her voice and kind of make music from the words? I think? I don't know how it works, just listen to it! While it is a bit sad, it's an incredibly beautiful song and well written.

But the song... I can never resist... uhh... how would I put it... banging my head, clapping, tapping my feet.. Dancing, I guess. It's good.
for guitar lovers, lil extra for those you like metal but not the screaming, its an instrumental and I don't know if it was posted here already, but this is considered Prog, I've been watching the arguments on TL about what this is exactly
Well I'm shocked that nobody has included this song, it makes me choke up every time I hear it it's just the most beautiful song. The lyrics can and WILL move anybody that has a special someone on their mind. I'm willing to bet everyone here knows it, but it still needs to be mentioned!
Listen for the emotions and just what it is to love somebody, it'll put a smile on your face and a tear in your eye I promise .
Heh yeh, took me a while to figure out a sales pitch for this one.
Basically the song feels totally out of the modern world and way of thinking. A 12 minute song of harp playing, loose orchestration and singing with a voice someone described as a wheezing asthmatic child. The lyrics on this particular one (as far as I can understand them) revolve around her sister teaching her to understand the nightsky and stars. And somehow it all works and as a whole becomes a gorgeus song.
In addition to pulling off the whole thing somehow, the song really impresses with the lyrical output. The way Newsom makes English sound like something endlessly poetic and filled with history and magic never ceases to amaze me. It's kind of like jumping into some old fairytale where everything is filled with adventure and wonder and no cynicism exists.
Even if I don't end up listening to this regularly at all and it's easy to think the song as childish and irrelevant, I find it wonderful that a song (and album) like this exists. It feels like a complete escape from any mundane, negative and dull things going through your head every day.
I came here to post this and was beaten by one page. Works for me. OP, add this to the god damned list already; it's one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard.

I'm sorry, but only those who wept with joy while listening to the new composition of Baba Yetu and all that entails qualify for humanity. Everyone else has to move to an island and go back to the dark ages, burning art and killing science while the rest of us keep working on advancing human civilization so that we can one day fire the whole bloody lot of you into the sun.
With two previous versions of Baba Yetu to consider, each with their devotees, Christopher Tin did the sensible thing: he cheated. For the new version, he combined percussion elements from both previous incarnations while also adding something new, bypassing all those laws of propriety that say the track shouldn't be able to appeal to both camps, and then he goes one further and ACTUALLY IMPROVES THE FUCKING THING. I don't know what kind of person can listen to fucking Baba Yetu and think to himself, 'You know what this needs? More epic.'
Finally, to those unfamiliar with world music, this is representative of world music in the same way that, say, Will Wright is a developer of video games. You can give Will Wright all the tools and ideas in the world, but he'll still use them to create a piece of interactive media that has you building something. If you want first person shooters, you'll have to go see Valve or Infinity Ward.
Christopher's Calling All Dawns takes language, form, and music styles from all over the world and inserts them into what can be uncharitably called the album's template, and charitably called a work of beauty. Christopher keeping to his fundamental principles and own personal style while composing music in twelve different languages and localized music styles is what makes the smooth transitions on the album possible. It also means that if you like one track, you'll probably like most of them.
So, buy it. Support the talented independent artist. It's an incentive for Christopher to make more music in the future of the sort that would make the manchild of Jesus Christ and Chuck Norris weep tears of joy. It's not just that the music is good -- it is a shining beacon of excellence in the endless sea of mediocrity, and this status should be rewarded. It's what I always aim for when I compose music, but never reach. Maybe that's the result of that "education" thing I keep hearing about.
It's melodic, memorable, uplifting, well-crafted, well-written world music.
Metal or in this case industrial actually isn't my thing, but I always liked Rammsteins music although they don't really fit into my normal music taste, so you should like em too :D
(took this song of em, becaus I won 7 games in a row while listening to Rammstein and this one was the one that was running during the last epic battle)
Such an amazing song, I would say the only song that fill me with enough emotion that can makes me wanna shred some tears everytime I listen to it (Princess Mononoko)
this is really good as well, probably mentioned in this thread before through ( Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence)
It's funny how I don't really listen to instrument music but these two are my all time fav songs
Wouldn't know what to say about it, the first time I heard it I simply loved it.
This is one of the most memorable songs of my youth. I remember always saying this was my favorite song as a young child, even though I didn't know what it was called back then. "Can we turn the volume up just a little higher?" describes this song perfectly.
Still as amazing as ever
Adding a third because I can't believe this is not in the list yet. One of the most recognisable tunes (to me at least)
