Use clearer terms so people don't get confused. More brackets, or fractions, work better then long strings of numbers leaving people to figure stuff out. Neither 48/(2(9+3)) or 48 _____ 2*(9+3) can be misinterpreted.

He asked 48/2*(9+3). The correct order to evaluate this is brackets -> exponent -> multiplication/division -> addition/subtraction. The mistake orcas made was to assume that some how the divide operator acts on all terms to it's right, which it doesn't. He also ignored his own rule of division before multiplication (not that it matters!). 48/2*(9+3) becomes 48 / 2 * 12, which can be evaluated in any order, ie three possibilities: 48/2 = 24, 24*12 = 288; 12/2 = 6, 6 * 48 = 288; 48 * 12 = 576, 576 / 2 = 288; Come on guys this is primary level stuff ![]()

Basically the point is to learn the principles of having a point and defending it with evidence. Pretty much any essay you will ever write is an argument of some sort with varying levels of bias and nuance (even if you're talking about the ideology of some character in an 18th century short story, you're still making a point that can be challenged and defending it with your own reasoning and evidence). So in the very beginning they pick something that everyone knows at least something about (like the most generic one, uniforms) so you can focus on the arguing instead of getting stuck trying to work your way around the issue at hand. Then they specialize the essays until your writing is more nuanced and less one-sided.

The topics of my English essays this year: an autobiography, my "greatest moment," my "worst moment," my "happy place" (wtf, lol?), my prized possession, the person whom I admire the most, and I had to write some stupid thing for the guidance department of my school. None of these essays teach rhetoric or how to form an argument (they teach us that skill in freshman & sophomore years apparently), and they're basically just to make sure you're functionally literate and can express your thoughts clearly. They might be to prepare us for writing college application essays, but they still seem pretty useless. Some of the topics I can at least express my actual thoughts and beliefs without fabricating anything, but some of them are just utter nonsense and are really stupid (my happy place, really???).
