In light of having beast fingernails, and curiosity as to Western attitude to earrings, what do you think of these two things? I know Koreans somewhat favour earrings based on all the guys I've known - and I've known a lot of Koreans.
Beastly right hand. Beastly left hand. I also have a genetic condition causing extremely short and disproportional fingers. Also, my fingernails aren't that yellow, it's just the lighting.

I could never have finger nails that long lol! I keep mine relatively short and would never get my ears pierced and personally dont care if other guys have it.
|
I need and want my nails short. I do work with my hands so it probably wouldn't work out anyways. I don't have time to be all prissy with my fingernails like women. Earrings, I used to have one, but took it out about a decade ago. Looks good sometimes, other times it looks awful.
|
You really look like a chick with those fingernails, grose
|
Long fingernails are useful. It's not a fashion thing and I don't care what others think.
|
Second poll makes no sense, question is about what someone thinks about earrings on other men, but all answers are about what they think about earrings on themself :o
|
Right ear is the gay ear. Left ear is tryhard 2 be cool ear. Both ears is still tryhard 2 be cool. Relatively accepted. Anything beyond that is just looking for attention.
I don't really care, but I'm more of the belief that you don't need abnormal visual markers to show people your personality; you just need to talk to them. Any piercing reduces your corporate business world job prospects by a 5th though.
|
To me, I don't care if men have long fingernails, doesn't concern me. I don't care if women paint their nails but I don't really like long fingernails on them.
As for earrings, don't care for either. Do what you want but i prefer smaller earrings on women, not the giant hoops...

Long nails and earrings are favorable to korean people, what???? I'm korean, and while some guys might get some generic diamond stud, I've never heard of the fingernail thing, that's kinda gross~~

I'm assuming over 95% of TL posters are men so they can identify with that post. As for the women, it would be for others.

i have fake nails and several piercings, including an earring

I play the cello, so my fingernails are as short as I can possibly get them. And I don't really care for earings in guys. Some guys can pull it off fairly well, but most just look douchey.

short nails are a part of good hygene, earrings are a matter of superficial preference.

long nails annoy me when it comes to typing or working. So I generally keep them short. Nails as long as the op weird me out as they generally dont look that appealing and rarely ever look that clean. Although the op does seem to keep them well maintained. It just seems to me that whenever I see someone with long nails, it's usually because of neglect and not out of trying to achieve a certain look. They're rarely ever styled. I hold this opinion for both boys and girls.
|
I don't like earrings ... Will never wear such stuff. Nails thou ... Don't mind. Had my periods of extra long nails before, nowdays I keep them actually like 0.3-0.5 cm long. Don't like them cut off completely coz then I can't use my fingertips for prolongued hours. They just start to hurt in the first 2-3 days after I cut them off completely and try to game for like more then 2 hours.

Long nails are just an annoyance. They get in the way of doing work, can break, etc. I keep mine short. Don't really care about earrings.

Long nails impede me whenever I use a keyboard, musical or otherwise, so I end up clipping them before they grow monstrous. Earrings on men... usually I just see them as wastes of money, but perhaps someday I will find a man and earring setup that looks fetching.
|
I find it kind of curious that the macho types tend to believe long nails are for women and short ones for men: you're paying more attention to them by cutting them and keeping them short.

I take some extra time whenever I wash my hands to clean my nails well, and to be honest I think the fact that they're long enough for me to clean inside it makes them cleaner than when I had short nails and trying to reach under the nail would feel like self torture.

I personally dislike long nails as a habit from playing piano for a while. It still gets in the way with other instruments like the flute and clarinet... and it gets in the way with Starcraft >_>.
I guess I just don't like long nails for practical reasons.
As for earrings, it just rubs me the wrong way when I see a guy wearing them. Small earrings on girls seem fine, but those trashy hoop earrings are just irritating.
|
Alright, what the fuck.

Men should cut their fingernails short, OP.
Earrings doesnt concern me, just dont overdo it.

The last thing for me I look at on a woman is her fingernails. However I personally dislike how long nails and earrings are grouped together like people who have long nails will generally have earrings as well. Usually guys who have long nails do so for a practical reason such as the above stated for guitar. I also very rarely have ever seen a guy with long nails it's just one of those things guys take care of regularly. Earrings on guys is one of those things that don't bother me and I'd categorize those and tattoos together rather than earrings and long nails.

The only thing I don't like is fake nails on women, tbh. If I see long nails on a guy, and it's not just one hand for classic guitar, the assumption is usually that he has bad hygeine :/
|
Damn, you are like a man-bear-girl with those hands.
|
I think long nails are very unsightly on men. A lot of Asian men purposely have a very long pinky nail. And it's for the purpose of picking their nose, so its always a pleasure to shake their hands. When I see long nails, my first reaction is "unkempt and dirty", as short nails are much more hygienic.
Same applies x2 for toenails. Long dirty toenails are extremely gross.

long fingernails are just gross and look stupid when you got no real white fingernails but this seethrough stuff.
Concerning the earrings there is a running joke in germany that when a man has an earring in his left ear he is gay so no thanks to earrings too

I used to have long nails on my right hand for playing classical guitar. The only other reason I can think of having long nails as a male is for cutting your skin in jail to insert drugs...
Earrings, I don't care either way.

I hate responses like this. Long nails are a tool of the trade for classical or flamenco guitarists- nothing to do with sexual preferences. Even if they don’t play and have long nails... I really don’t see how you can judge them so. :/

Earrings are acceptable on men from my perspective. General rule for earrings is that men wear one and women wear two.

Pirate earring would be cool imo, on the left ofcourse (right is gay). And long fingernails, just no. Not even it would look ridiculous, but it is also extremely comfortable to do anything with your hands with long nails, it just hurts.

I have no love for earrings. No thank you I don't want you to shove a needle through my ear and put some trinket on them, nor do I want to have long nails that break all the time and look overtly effeminate. Both of them are a hassle, and will most likely be the source of name-calling and jeering in highschool. I don't need another thing to worry about.

It's this type of misconception that just goes to prove how absurd the whole notion of "because they have XXX they must be YYY". Ultimately, the only way of telling if someone is gay is if they tell you.
Personally earings and fingernails don't really bother me. I have to say for practical reasons I don't really get along with long nails, but I don't see someone with them an think they're anything but someone with long nails.

Their profession requires them to have longer finger nails in order to play well. I believe is talking about 'your average Joe' here. Long finger nails are unsightly on men, genetic deformity or not, it expresses femininity in Western culture and is frowned upon by men.
Example: Physical Exercise Risk of injury to the palms of the hands are possible because of long fingernails, during various exercises. I.E. Bench Press (any piece of equipment where you have to grip)
Cut your nails OP! <3

long nails are disgusting. I don't even like them on girls. Earring however, I have 1 in both ears and i look weird without them.
|
Long fingernails looks friggin' nasty on men. Girls have cute hands.
But besides that, men traditionally do more work with their hands and it's not practical to keep long fingernails, in fact it's probably impossible, since the work will end up breaking the nails off. Not to mention how dirty men's nails get, as well. When say you're changing oil or playing sports.
I think we've all heard the phraise "i broke a nail!" when a girl does something.
Man with earring is forgivable but just one earring looks a little gay. (I mean literally, gay men often wear only one earring),

I think long nails look dumb on women and men, but I really don't apply my thoughts to what everyone else should look like. Everyone should look like whatever the hell they want to, and anyone trying to stop them should be forced to wear unsightly clothing.

Um biting your nails gets them short and the reason long nails are not manly is 1) the phrase 'eep, I broke a nail!' does not work well with men and 2) try forming a fist and punching something with long nails- not practical.
And your argument about growing out = man cutting = woman obviously fails for the reason that men cut their hair and women grow theirs out. The guy was right, long finger nails = woman short = man, simple.

As for the cavemen thing, i'd think that their hygiene isnt the best, i take care of my hygiene. There is no point in your argument. Women are always talking about hygiene anyways. They're so finicky about clean things, so you shouldn't practice hygiene since it's what women do...You obviously didn't get my point. It's dumb placing arbitrary objectives for how to be masculine when they're illogical and inconsistent with each other. Do you ever question your beliefs or do you just go with what everyone else tells you? You have no reasons for your beliefs. It was just an example to show how ridiculous the whole system of judgment is. But how does it fail again? Oh right, because all men cut their hair, except the men that don't...and the men that didn't used to(Mickey Rourke is pretty manly last i checked, and of course cavemen didn't, and they're a lot manlier than anyone waxing their legs today). The logic just doesn't follow. Why do men cut their hair short? Because of the circular argument that says they cut their hair short because men cut their hair short. That's all anyone who supports this view can come up with.

Also, I'm not sure how an injury to the palm would arise from long fingernails while gripping, care to explain?
If your grip slips your fingernails could conceivably cut into your palms, but I agree it's unlikely.
Okay guys simple reason men cut their nails, or at least the reason that makes me remember to more often than not:
Girls do not like being fingered by a guy with long nails especially if he's clumsy or careless because it's really easy for a nail to scrape against the inside of her pussy and it hurts quite a bit. I don't feel like getting yelled at and losing out on sex for the night just because my nails are too long and my hand slipped (hahaha).

Dude you have to be pretty badass to pull off having long hair. Or just be a metal fan/ musician. Otherwise, you cut your hair short. I think you're just going to have to accept general consensus opinion, long nails is pretty feminine. Also I reckon the vast majority of women prefer short hair. (No source but meh)

I see lots of East Asian men with long hair like Takeshi Kaneshiro here: http://media.onsugar.com/files/2011/04/14/3/1539/15397817/85/T-1.jpg http://www.lovehkfilm.com/blog/roninonempty/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/250px-takeshi_kaneshiro00.jpg This guy's quite the celebrity, even if you think he looks like a woman.

We do these things because the majority of women prefer them e.g. most women prefer men with short hair, clean shaven/no facial hair, short nails, no earrings. It's to attract women.

i keep long fingernails on my right hand for guitar, but i usually keep my hand in my pocket in public haha

Long nails on guys isn't feminine. It's usually a sign of bad hygiene or laziness and therefore unfavorable. I'm not saying this is always true. But I think that most people would agree with this generalization.

That's different, obviously, i presume that you live in a modern society.
In your society, do people think that there's a difference in shaving your legs or shaving/cutting your beard and/or hair?
In my own experience and listening to the experience of others, there's been a big difference between the 2 in talk of what's masculine or not.
Just to clarify, the results of those experiences, shaving your legs has been considered something feminine and cutting your hair or beard has not.

Also, long fingernails and hair are gross as fuck; they accumulate filth. Long hair is especially bad on an intimate partner because they usually don't wash it every day and it smells bad and contaminates the bed.
I used to have a girlfriend with long hair, she was a smoker and her hair always smelled like cigarette smoke. Fucking nasty.

I don't really care if people have long fingernails or not. Personally, I had long fingernails for a bit over a year, and they were very useful for working with small things (resistors, small connectors, screws, etc). It was rather like having tweezers built into my hand, which was nice. I went back to cutting my fingernails short for practical reasons. One of the major practical problems i experienced was that I would occasionally cut people by accident while playing sports (clenching your fist isn't really a problem - a healthy nail will flex quite a bit in that situation). Breaking nails is also, believe it or not, really annoying (especially when you do it in a shop full of dudes).

Nevertheless, I used to have somewhat longer fingernails for guitar practice - found them to be generally rather uncomfortable - got in the way of typing + all the dirt that gets stuck to them. Also, man or woman - long fingernails don't really make anyone look more attractive imho.
Earrings and other kind of piercings - perfectly fine. Some guys look really cool with them, some don't. Everyone should figure out their own style.
|
long fingernails... why would anyone even want those?
for earrings i don't care i wear earrings occasionally but not much lately. I usually wear small ones made out of steel. Wearing one of those big ass zircon rocks that cost like $20 on your left ear makes you a huge douche in my eyes atleast.

short nails and no jewelery is considered manly because working men can't maintain long fingernails and don't have time for jewelery, and a working man is attractive in the 19 century a working man could get your a place to live and put food on the table. The ideas of jewelery and long fingernails is from the idea of a kept woman sort of like how being pale was considered attractive at times in history because that meant you didn't work as a woman that you were pampered etc. The ideas of western society till industrialization was an attractive woman could sow and work the home with the kids while the man works the fields that is our basis, and their basis was the same before that women have long been considered fragile in societies so the idea of man works the fields while woman kept the home is long standing.

If guys are honestly wearing their nails that long like in the op then this world is becoming scarily effeminized. I don't think I can add much more than that.
|
nails are not a big deal on mens, because it's related to something if you have them long, like you are an acoutic guitar player for example...

Long nails on one hand is common among guitarrists. Other than that, i can't see a reason for them.

Well I have long nails on my right hand and shorter ones but still longer than most guys on my left, this is because i like long nails and file them in to points.... it looks cool and comes in handy from time to time. The reason they are shorter on one hand than the other is because im a guitarist, you need to have long nails on your picking hand if you are like me and play finger style alot.
I'm also a former goth, I still wear some facepaint and paint my nails black, red and white..... i think it looks cool and different, thats all that matters to me. I've never once had a girl think it was feminine or made me less manly or attractive, at least I've never met a girl whom I would want to be friends with who thought that way.
The reason why they don't think its feminine? Because i'm comfortable with myself, I do what makes me happy, I dont conform to some outdated notion of what is manly. I present myself in a way that says "this is me, like me or hate me, its all the same to me" and as for other guys.... well I'm over 6 feet tall and have 20 years of martial arts experience..... so if they have a problem then I'm prepared to show them appearances don't mean shit.
|
I hate it to have short fingernails, always have a bit longer than is usual for dudes. If I have to open something then my nails are very useful I don't think it has anything to do with your 'manliness', but I do think that most guys with earrings are doing it to show off, not because they think it's pretty.
Don't like piercings as a whole though, not on men and not on women.
|
LOL weird. i guess the computer nerd demographics do not like this kind of fashion trend stuff.
|
I have short nails right now. But they grown I cut them once a week or every other week.
But Honestly, as a Man. I find fingernails to be fun when grown. Then again I'm the type of guy who wishes he had Claws.
As for earrings. I woudn't wear them. I just never saw the appeal.
But back to nails, scratching shit is for real men.
|
Nails on my right hand is long for finger plucking, short on my left to hold the chords. =)

Have all men turned gay?
Men should cut their fingernails short, OP.
Earrings doesnt concern me, just dont overdo it. why's that? do you get manicures as well? or do you just do a minor trim? how can growing out something be non-masculine? is sabertoothe(or avalanche or w/e his name is) feminine? do men have to wax their legs now to not be gay? I thought that was the female thing to do...What about all those cavemen, are they really woman-like since they have long nails and hair all over the place? You obviously didnt get the point. I dont get manicures, that's for women. I also dont shave my legs, that's for women. Women like long fingernails, it's feminine, i cut mine short, that's masculine. There's a point, actually. What's that talk about inconsistent to each other? it's highly consistent when you're talking about males and what they do regarding what's masculine and what's not, look at the polls. Illogical? oh please. That's fine then if you don't want to look at your own points. You said you don't shave your legs, but why then do you cut your hair and shave your beard? What's the difference? If you reply with another tautology, well, that's not an argument. We do these things because the majority of women prefer them e.g. most women prefer men with short hair, clean shaven/no facial hair, short nails, no earrings. It's to attract women. Do you consider beards to be feminine? Do you think most men consider beards to be feminine? Do you think that characters with beards are portrayed as unmanly? Unsightly, sure. Ugly, sure. Brash? Boisterous? Unattractive? Single? Sure. Unmanly? Nope. If masculinity is just about attracting females, well, we'd think leonardo dicaprio and the backstreet boys are the manliest men that ever manned on the planet of men. We cut our nails, our hair, beards and don't get piercings because that's what's demanded of us in our society. It's not about attracting women. A masculine image is dictated by society as a whole, not one aspect.
Can't argue with that although I wasn't suggesting attracting women is the only reason.

I let my fingernails grow that long out of sheer laziness.

I couldn't help but be repulsed by those long nails. I mean, to each his own, that's fine but I think Jinro's illustration of nails to the chalkboard describes it well. I also don't like long nails on women either so could just be an upbringing thing or just me!

Ick, I don't really like long nails on guys or girls. I guess they can occasionally be pretty or glamorous as a fashion thing, but I think it's a really creepy feeling when someone with long nails touches you, even if it is your girlfriend. Short nails also stay nice and clean without effort, aside from cutting them regularly.
|
I have 2 rings in my left ear, my fingernails is short tho.
And lol on you people saying that the "manliness" is going away. "manliness" have always changed and been somewhat like fashion. If i dont remember wrong, in the old Egypt the men wore makeup and earrings but not the lady's.
|
I like to keep my nails trimmed and short. I can understand them being long if you play guitar or something, but I don't see the fashion in it, it's not like black nail polish or anything I reckon.
Regarding earrings, I used to wear studs in both ears, because I liked the look (I have medium-length hair so you can see them if my hair isn't too messy). I actually still want to wear some, but haven't gone around buying some (off topic, anyone know where I can find plain studs that are all black? I haven't had any luck lol)

I usually relate long nails on men to coke fiends. I had an earring as a teenager till I ripped some other dudes one out in a fight, didn't want it to happen to me

haha, lol. Why must we be so insecure about our self? If we would have live then(egypt) we would have thought that that was the manliest thing to do.
Manliness isnt really a thing, and is seen different by different people. I just think we all should accept what any man think is manly, and just let him do it

I've bitten my nails as a nervous habit since before I can remember. No earrings...

Earrings on men.. Some guys can pull it off, others look like complete dicks. Short fingernails for men, for sure.

I'm sorry OP but those are just girly not beastly.
Personally I cut my fingernails fairly regularly as they start bothering me as they grow, and I haven't used any jewellery other than my dog tags after childhood.

I can't even stand long fingernails at women. I just don't like it. Its not practicall at all. Earings can easily make a man look like a douchbag so no on them, too.

I'm an avid nail-biter, so long nails could never be an option even if I wanted it to be. I'd never were earrings, i guess mostly because i hate "standing out" in a crowd. What others were and how they look doesnt concern me at all though, people could were clown dresses tor all i care.
|
The nails in the OP are disgusting to me (for men), but that's probably because I'm not used to it here.
|
Fingernails meh, earings I don't have anything strongly against them but I can recognise that the majority of people (in my country at least) who wear them are chav pricks.
|
Short finger nails is superior. 1: I study for lab assistant, gloves get torn. 2: I work part time as a mason, my nails break off if i don't cut them, like all of it.
|
I would never wear earings and don't thing that men look favorably with them, but I can understand if somebody thinks otherwise. However, long fingernails on men (and to some degree on women, too) are plain terrible. Not only are they beyond impractical, but they are also gross.

i like it medium short as in like a week after i cut em. Long nails are just so tedious in many ways. Earrings i actually like em. It can be bad or good just like haircuts.

Earrings, might look cool might not(guess im neutral, although i think it looks pretty cool i dont have the need for one) I have a poor habbit of biting my fingernails so i vote don't maintain them since its subconcious .
|
Nope, I don't wear my nails long, don't have ears pierced and don't care if other guys do. And this is coming from a guy who has pretty long hair.
|
Cut your nails, OP. It's just going to weird people out.
|
I work alot with my hands so my nails never get the chance to grow very long. Earrings, well. I don't wear any myself, but I guess some guys can sport them without looking girly.
|
I don't see much utility in either. Long nails does not necessarily mean strong nails, and the only thing I could see a gauged earlobe being useful as would be a padlock holder.
|
The nails on my right had are long, on my left they're short. I'm learning flamenco guitar

People are reading too much into physical appearances and how they represent manliness. It's not even physical appearances as a whole, but taking these exact aspects out of context of the whole look. Have you ever met someone who would otherwise be attracted to you, if not for your choice in accessories or fingernail length? I think real (or alpha) males will style themselves however they feel comfortable, and sure as hell not going to be self-conscious of how other people think.
I still don't understand this whole tendency for conformity. As human males, we want to attract "high valued" women to further increase the chance of healthy children. But if you are going around mirroring yourself to this stereotypical image of a man created by society, how are you going to differentiate yourself from ever other average joe out there doing the exact same thing?
Oh and don't say your swag or charisma will win the female's heart. If you are stressing over the fact that you need a certain look or style to even begin to attract women, then you probably don't have that swag or charisma. If you choose not to wear earrings or have long nails because the reason is that you would look less manly, that's basically saying you are not manly enough to overpower this slight aspect in your physical appearance. It's not like you are wearing a bra and dress.

Dudes can have earrings. No problems with that.
But I have long been averse to long fingernails. They look so unpleasant to me! It's also a specific issue of mine that I associate long fingernails with increased vanity. Honestly, I have never looked at a person's hand and thought, "well, that could look better with long fingernails". I have never been bothered, and indeed, I take no notice at all of them, by short fingernails.
|
I play violin, so even though i tend not to clip my nails regularly, if they get too long it becomes impossible to play properly. Its unhealthy to keep one's nails long since lots of dirt and bacteria can get underneath them, and then into your food when you eat
|
The only thing i can see long nails being useful is for scratching your back, nothing else. Maybe snorting blow. :D. but earings don't really care about. Have a couple friends that have gauges, and wear some small diamond ones, but nothing too fancy or too out there
|
Seriously dislike long fingernails, u cannot do any team sport with those!!! Would rip some skin open or break your nails

I'll be honest I find long nails on men or women pretty disgusting.
It's not really practical at all. When my finger nails get too long it makes it impossible to type properly.

They have practical reasons for leaving the pinky long, but man you don't wana know them :D

This is kind of tangential, but those of you that are saying you keep your nails long for fingerpicking, do you actually use the nail itself to pluck the string? I don't really fingerpick (metal woo), but my teacher taught me to brush the side of the string with my fingertip and avoid using my nail. Is it a stylistic thing (obviously the tone would be different), or was my teacher wrong?
|
Long fingernails on men is just gross. I hate long nails in general, is it really that hard to use a nail-clipper?
Earrings on men just seems weird. It's jewelery you associate females with, not men.
|
I keep it short because it's so hard to keep it clean lol
|
Earrings are fine, i personally dont wear any. As far as long fingernails go? its fucking gross, honestly. Guys and gals keep em short.

I only have long fingernails on my right hand for playing the guitar. Otherwise, always short.
|
Nails: very short. You can't play piano confortably with long nails.

I'm Korean and I don't personally know any Koreans that think earrings on a guy are favorable thing. Maybe back in middle school when it was the "cool" thing to do, but pretty much everyone I've known has grown out of that along with long, bleach-blonde bangs and North Face apparel. Of course I live in the USA so the attitude in Korea might be different...
|
Lol meant to vote neutrol for the earring one
|
I like to keep the nails of my right hand at a reasonable length ( let them grow out a bit ) for comfortable fingerpicking. However, the moment my left hand nails get long enough to interfere with chord fingerings, I clip em down. In summary: long and short!
Aaaaand earrings? No thank you. I will not be adding orifices to my body any time soon.

I've wanted to get earrings for a while, just never gotten around to it. Long nails kind of weird me out, and I try to keep mine short.
But guys, masculinity doesn't come from your fashion choices. Everybody in this thread talking about that is dead wrong. It originates in yourself, regardless of what you wear.
|
Earrings are more of a fashion thing, although males with earrings usually fall into a certain personality range. Long fingernails, however, are viewed as either feminine or a lack of personal grooming. My first thought seeing long nails on a male is that he's too lazy to spend the minute grooming his nails, not that he's rebelling against modern norms. I doubt I'm alone in that perception.
|
I have long nails because I play classical guitar. You need nails to get a good sound while finger picking, they come in handy.
Earrings I'm neutral on, it's just personal choice whether they wear them or not. I don't care either way.
|
I could care less what other people do but I cut my nails and would never get my ears pierced.
|
My little brother has those douche-bag diamond-wannabe earrings, he look like a moron
|
My thoughts, your finger nails disgust me. Earrings I don't care but fake diamond earrings are obvious and lame.
|
Only excuse for long fingernails on men is if you play classical guitar, when it becomes a must.
|
Nails can be used as tools, so to each his own. But I am and always will be against piercings of any kind. I don't even like earrings on girls. I see absolutely no reason for them.

My left hand has short nails on account of guitar and my right hand has longer nails on account of guitar.

Earrings on a man makes him look feminine. I'm not sure why any man would want to look that way.

My left hand finger nails however are short and it bothers me when i type and my fingernails hit the keyboard. Also if I'm playing piano I usually trim down the nails so every key i play doesnt click

It all depends on who is wearing them (both nails and earrings) and how. Some pull it off magnificently, others just look weird, and even then i depends who you're asking as a perspective, here is how I kept my nails for almost 6 months, that was about 3 years ago and it was a pain in the ass not to break them, but i was quite proud and got complimented a lot (mostly by girls though lol) crappy pic because zoom-in from a larger and very silly pic. + Show Spoiler +(spoilered so no clutter)
and also i don't see what any of this has to do with manliness. Manliness (or rather manhood i guess) isn't something that should be defined only by how you look, that's just a matter of fashion and fashion changes, over time or from one culture to another.
|
Not sure if this has been mentioned since I didn't check every single page but most koreans [ males ] are raised to take care of their finger nails and keep them short most of the time. If you go anywhere to meet anyone's parents or anything its among one of the first things they judge you by in an already superficial society. This applies to fingernails and toenails since as I'm sure you know you take off your shoes most of the time indoors.
Earrings are considered for punks for normal people but ok for celebrities by most older generation koreans.
And before anyone gets up in a riot, this doesn't mean koreans are the only ones who are raised to take care of their fingernails, its just from my experience they explicitly are judged by it on a normal basis in society and don't have weird shit like 1 long fingernail on the pinky.

What kind of women like black long nails on a male? Do they also wear black?

Meh, I say we leave long fingernails and earrings to the females.

Totally. I've seen enough earrings on men to be somewhat accustomed to it by now. So long as the earrings aren't ridiculously big or those hoop type things which give you a huge hole in the bottom part of your ear.

its usefull if you major in classical guitar like i do. i have long nails on my thumb and my first three fingers on my right hand in order to play guitar

Classical guitar is the only legit excuse for long nails
|
I keep my own nails long. Mainly for the shock factor though. Soo many people are...enthralled with telling others how they should do things that if I can get under their skin by not doing anything at all its a win in my book. Entertainment? Earrings I had my ears pierced at six or seven. By the time I was eleven I told my parents that I thought earrings were useless and refused to wear them. The hole has long since closed.
|
I don't know why I would have long fingernails as a man aside from requiring them (Classic Guitarist, or whatever).
|
I don't see the point of having long fingernails tbh. Just seems like they would be terribly impractical.
Earrings... Don't have any, but could care less.
|
Short nails and no earrings, thanks ^^

I had a class mate with like a 2 centimeter long thumb nail for his guitar, but he didn't keep it clean, so he was generally known as 'The Claw'. I don't see the point in ear rings. I guess if you wanna pick up some dudes at a gay bar, it's a perfect accessory, but I doubt it's particularly popular with ladies in general. It just seems like you're trying to alienate yourself from the rest of the world, by choosing to being 'that weird guy'. It's a phase in some teenagers lives I guess.
I just don't see why. Long nails require a fuckton of work to keep clean, and people think you're a weirdo. Ear rings, same thing.

Almost, not all though. I've met plenty who told me they liked them. I'll admit a few may have thought I was gay at the time, but meh can't be picky.

I would think the main thing about long fingernails is that you're gonna stab the woman when you're trying to get jiggy with it. If you know what I'm saying.
Whats more masculine than gettin down with the ladies? I suppose you can do some manly things with long nails...like peeling stickers, and itching yourself.

Short nails and no earrings
However its worth noting that if you play the guitar you're gonna want long nails...
|
Never understood long fingernails and i only like some earrings on men mainly nothing that stands out too much.
|
thoose pictures almost made me puke. that was soo disgusting. i really dont think i could even be friends with someone who didn't cut their nails solely because is so nasty looking.

Earrings are ok I mean som stuff is uglyyy some nice sooo idk
and for the nails if its not to play guitar or some other reason its like lame... xD

Haha that's true they do. Thankfully for me I have no ambitions of going pro so I'm allowed to use my awesome Razer Naga when I play. No issues with APM here!

Sometimes, I get lazy and my nails get long. It's such a pain to type anything with long nails, though >.<
I'm terribly biased against earrings, though. I just look at them and instantly become prejudiced against the person wearing them.
|
Long nails feel annoying to me and they're also annoying to clean when you eat finger food. I wanted to have earrings before but I kept getting this fear that it'll get caught in something and pull the shit out of my ear. Other than that though I don't mind earrings in any circumstance.
I used to have long fingernails when I was younger and pretended I was a cool vampire lol. I got into earrings since Link wore them and I was pretty obsessed with his character along with the games ^_^.

I slightly grow nails on my right hand. It's not very noticable. Only reason I do it is so I can play fingerstyle guitar better. Left hand has ubershort nails.

long nails on men = gay as in homosexual and/or gay as in impractical apm interference idc much about earrings unless it's a diamond dollar sign or gaping gauges

You know, long nails are need to play guitar but even 0.4 cm feels long to me. If it's incredibily long it'll break easily and there's not much control so they may be either liars or simply bad.

Asian here. Keeps long nails on right hand for classical guitar (but not too creepy long except my thumb). Left hand kept really short. I have the 'generic' asian diamond stud and a ring on my left ear. Asian girlfriend encouraged me to get it, so I can only presume that asian girls think earings are badass. Hence the large asian community with piercings. From your average joe to hardcore starcraft nerd.
Some older asians of Chinese descent believe that having the pinky shorter than the 2nd knuckle of the fourth finger is bad luck. So they grow the pinky to be longer than the 2nd knuckle of the 4th finger. Does that make sense? And this is a very very very minor minority. But if you are aware of Asian men just growing their pinky nail. This is it
Also, the pinky helps with digging ears =p
|
Long nails, nope, they're plain irritating, I peel them off even if they come out a little, when I'm watching a stream or something.
I dont wear earings myself, but studs actually do look good on some people.
|
Short nails and no piercings of any type. To be honest I would raise an eyebrow to a guy who keeps their nails long and/or has piercings. I don't like women with long nails in particular either, although it's obviously pretty common. Same thing with piercings. Looks ridiculous on guys imo, and I couldn't care less about them on women. It's more so about them being annoyances and in the way than them looking horrible. And that is why I much much prefer tattoos
|

Short nails because it's more practical. I play some guitar so it's almost a must. Earrings, I like earrings, on women. It also makes getting a white a collar job that much more difficult as a man.
|
I like my nails short, hard to play guitar when they are long. Even if I didn't play, I think I'd keep them short just because long nails are an annoyance. I'm thinking about getting studs though. So earrings don't really bother me. hah!
|
I play guitar, so I keep the middle 3 fingers on my right hand very long. I get alot of questions about it, but I tell them what it's for and I don't get any weird looks. Left hand is all short though.

I usually have long ass nails http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkylkvqDzB1qclah1o1_500.jpg I don't think the point of this thread applies to me though aha... I can't stand having short nails though, feeling the skin on the tip of my finger is just weird. A lot of people think my nails are gross, but this is how I like them so I don't really care lol. On guys any nail length is fine imo as long as white parts are under .3 cm ish, they usually don't take care of it well enough and it ends up looking gross and unclean.
I used to have ear piercings but I had a bad infection and it plugged up and I was too paranoid to ever get them again =/. Earrings on guys are fine as long as it's not over flashy
|
Ears pierced, 6 tats, and short nails. But then, I also don't care what anyone thinks of any of it.
Even my wife only gets a say where the cost is involved on that stuff, and I don't tell her what to do or not to do with piercings and the like either.
Only in the worst of scenarios will I rag on any body modification, like the blatantly senseless.

Fine with earrings, I've got one and have never regretted it.

Long fingernails are just disgusting. Earing are okay though.

Doing any sort of athletics should seriously preclude long nails because of their inconvenience and the high chance of seriously hurting your fingers breaking them. As a rock climber it would be absolutely impossible for me to have long nails.
apart from having one hand long for guitar, I view long nails as a sign that:
A. The person cares significantly more about personal appearance than comfort and practicality. This is unattractive.
B. The person is too lazy to properly take care of their body.this is also unattractive.
|
Long nails are simply impractical; It's hard to take out your contacts with them.

only way I see long fingernails useful is for classical guitar players. They almost require long fingernails, but thats the only acceptable way a man should ever have them IMO (or banjo, etc instrument wise)
Even then, when I tried getting better at classical, I prefered short fingernails, could never do the long fingernails thing.

depends on the kind of earring. those little diamond thingys are probably the most gay shit a dude could wear, after dresses. but I hang out with a lot of rock and metal fellas, big ass earrings (with holes in their earloapes) are rather common.

Blow your nose, use a pick, and i tell you, getting poked in the eye with or without nails hurt just as much. Done, done and done. Sure if it's some sorta social thing, but still. finding alternative solutions to those tasks is beside the point. its like saying: why should i drive a diesel fueled car when i can drive an electric car...?. it makes no sense. you enter to deep into personal choice/convenience/social stima realms and that makes any topic about 'preference' lose its free will so to speak. what is most puzzling here is why do boys prefer bling-blings?. its the lesser evil here?, its the hip-hop culture?, its about getting in touch with their feminine side?(without going overboard), are they trying to make a statement? I don't really care, but I'm more of the belief that you don't need abnormal visual markers to show people your personality; you just need to talk to them. Any piercing reduces your corporate business world job prospects by a 5th though.
I have my septum pierced (bull-ring on nose). I typically only wear it when I'm at home with my wife. Not looking for attention, I just like having it, and its interesting. It augments my personality. I have no other piercings, and if I were to get anything else they would be on my genitalia. Again, not for attention, because I don't walk around with my dick hanging out.
Also, what if you don't want to work in the corporate business world? Does that make you any less respectable? Does having a piercing make you any less respectable?

I have always kept my nails short due to my line of work. But I used to have earrings and in my left ear I had a 14mm flesh tunnel which is healing up now after being out for about 4 years.

Long fingernails are nasty. Nothing wrong with your earrings as long as their studs, not hoops.

I cut my nails short, when I notice the length. I don not wear earrings.
In general I don't like long fingernails or earrings/piercings on anybody. I see no use for long fingernails except the one above and it just looks silly imho.
I just do not get why anybody would want to drill a hole into his or her body only to stick a piece of metal in it. It is like a small self mutilation to me. (Ears are kinda not so bad as other body parts as long as the earing are not completely silly) And I do not like how it looks most of the time.
But hey anybody can do what he or she wants with their body. I have a pretty big beard atm and I can see that this won't sit with everybody ^^

I just cut my nails whenever they start to get long (over 1mm of white?)
I'm personally not a fan of piercings but I don't really mind about other men having them.
|
imho, that is just disgusting.
|
My friend has an earring, so I kind of have to call it gay now.
|
When my nails grow at all, it drives me crazy, I hate the feel and hate the look, so I have to keep them cut.
|
Hmm... we're in 2011. I can't believe people are still calling earrings "Gay". It's disrespectful to both real homosexuals and sexy earring wearers such as myself.
|
I chew my nails so they're super short

How is that disrespectful? They are considered gay because a lot of gay men wear them, i fail to see how that is offensive.
|
my nails grow superfast and at school people notice my long nails and call me to cut them so i suppose long nails isnt good on men when i get all these comments
|
Long fingers is disgusting on both males and females, Earings aslong as they arent those ones that put massive holes in your ears.. they just look stupid. I dont have and never will have any earings, but others having them doesnt bother me the slightest aslong as it isnt those previosly mentioned.
Although, my dad likes to say, if you ever get into a fight with a guy that has any peircings, just grab them and pull like hell, his perspective on peircings has had a strong bearing on my choice not to get any xD

It's only disrespectful if you assume that it's meant in a disrespectful way.
If it's meant in a "earrings on men are generall worn by gay guys, hence it's somewhat gay" then it's just a statement of opinion.
Let's replace earrings with "two men having sex"
that's very definitely gay. If I said "two men having sex is gay" - how would you take it. I know how I mean it, but that's kinda not the point.
O/T:
My gf goes nuts at me for letting my nails grow too long, but it's more a laziness thing, than a choice thing. Though those are a little OTT. As for earrings - meh, don't much care either way.

Does a piercing on the left ear count? Not on the earlobe, obviously.

LOL no. I am Korean and I think earrings and long nails are disgusting- even on womens. Now to check up on the thread and lose my faith on humanity...

More like having earrings is = to being sexually attracted to men.
Honestly though I like having short nails but I am not very diligent at keeping them short Earrings is nothing I would ever do but it doesn't really mean anything to have one.

The poll kind of confuses me. The question is what do you think of earrings on men, but the first answer is "I will not wear them". Personally I don't care if other men wear earrings, but I won't wear them, so I'm not sure how to answer.

I don't know how it is where everyone else lives, but there's hardly any relation between being gay and wearing earrings where I live.
In fact, only time it relates to gay people is when someone wears a single earring on the right ear, and in that case we contemplate he might be gay.

i like keeping my fingers nice and neat. Also earrings just arent my thing but i have nothing against people with them =)
|
Men that keep their nails long is just weird to me not going to lie, lol.
|
Earrings are fine on guys... like someone said earlier, it's 2011 where people get rings everywhere on their bodies and no one even cares where, it's all socially acceptable, at least here in the US it is.
When it comes to long nails on men, it's the complete opposite.
When I think of a guy with long nails I think of 2 different people.
1: A basement dweller nerd who isn't able to keep up on personal hygiene/doesn't have ANY social skills whatsoever to not be able to realize how disgusting it is to have long nails if you're a guy, OR
2: A drug addict who hides drugs under his nails so cops don't see it.
Either way you're a disgusting person and I don't want to be around you.
|
I'm so surprised so many people have the reactions they are having to long nails and earings.
I couldn't be paid to give a damn about how other people present themselves.
I have tattoos and long hair but no piercings and I keep my nails short by default.
I'll never understand how so many people can really spend so much effort caring about how others look. I do care about how the women I'm going to fuck look, beyond that only people who look or act like they are going to try and harm me in some way bother me. Enjoy your freedom to express yourselves!
|
a man with long nails and earrings would be an interesting sight. that is all
|
short nail
no earring or piercing
and personally i don't give a shit about how others look
|
In my opinion, long nails on a guy is weird. Now maybe some dude could pull it off really well, but that would be a very rare case.
Earrings are case by case. Some look good, some look stupid. All depends on the style the guy is going for. Earrings just for Earrings sake generally don't look good, but if you have a particular style, and that style involves earrings, go for it imo.
Personally, I have short nails, and never plan on getting earrings.
|
My friend (Animostas) shapes his nails on his right hand for guitar playing "Thumb war?" "k." "OH GOD NVM"
|
Oh man... Well I keep my nails short, only reason that I can think of when you would want nails that long is for playing guitar.
|
However you want to look. I have long hair, some guys have earrings, whatevs.
As long as you don't create your personality from who or what you look like AKA Jersey Shore. Thats different.
Thats just sad.
|
I still bite my fingernails..
|
I have short nails because I do anything useful. That's the whole point of having long nails. That's what the statement is: "I don't have to do anything except be pretty, so someone please come take care of me!" Do work.
|
My nails are long enough to barely have that white edge and don't let them get much longer.
Short nails that look like the person bites them are disgusting. Dirt under nails is disgusting.
Don't care about piercings on men. Most look bad unless it's very subtle. Personally I think anything in the 20-14 gauge range on lobes looks 90s and lame.
|
wtf long nails? this is juts plain gross *gets his finger nails clipped now >_>
|
There are a handful cosmetic features that I'm obsessive about, and finger nails are one of them. I detest long, dirty, unmaintained nails. I cut them at least twice a week. As for earrings, I'm more impartial. I can't even think of anything to say while I'm typing because I simply don't care.
|
So gross. Long fingernails are just the grosest thing. Thats so far from beastly, IMO. *shudder*
|
Men w/ long nails = hampering Men w/ a long pinky nail = Give up the blow already
Men w/ earrings = Ladies men Men w/o earrings = Also ladies men
|
Long fingernails can be useful for penspinning, so I don't mind them on penspinners. Edit: Example video
|
well my left hand has very short nails and like my right hand has long nails at the same time.
yes i play guitar.
|
6 of my fingers got short nails and 4 of them got long, hard, shapely nails. I never started using my right pinky :/
|
Gross and gross. Almost every guy I have met that has earrings is a complete douche and or full of himself to the point where I want to drop kick his shins.
