I spent over 3 hours messing with the free stuff in Amplitube. I actually got an okay sound out of it. Now I just have to work on getting my playing to not sound terrible and shake off all the rust.

I'm starting to take a different approach to practicing. Instead of just doing tons of scales and exercises like I used to, I'm going to learn full songs along with cool excerpts from songs and perfect my technique that way. It seems to work well so far. It's a lot more fun. My practicing has become much more consistent as a result. However, I'm a long way from being back at my old form.

edit: I discovered that KK Downing often plays guitars with scalloped frets as some of his Vs were fully scalloped (his old Hamer and his newer ESPs). In this new video where he talks about a solo from an old Priest album he is straight up playing an Yngwie strat with a Floyd Rose and EMGs bolted on.

I was wondering the same thing...

I just started to play about 3 months ago and don't really know how to get better. I've just been messing around and having a great time, but I think I'd have even more fun if I were better.

Cool track! I wish i was better at playing acoustic and at finger picking.

I've been playing a ton in these past couple of weeks, it's been great. I also recorded a cover of Doctor Doctor by UFO; i got the backing track with voice/drums/bass and just played over it: https://soundcloud.com/tlteo/ufo-doctor-doctor

Whoa that stuff in the chorus is totally awesome!! The solo nicely reminds me of it as well.

I followed you. Seriously, good job! What a great tone too. Mind if I ask what you used?

i bought and tried it for 5 mins and my opinion is that you're better off just learning guitar any other way (by practicing it), unless you enjoy rocksmith as a game/challenge in itself . which some people do .

but as far as i know it forces you to read music in a rocksmith pattern way rather than with tabs (like , turn your head sideways tabs), so to me it had no real relevance . and im ok with afk practicing whatever at my own time rather than having to adhere to the rules of a game

i don't think learning guitar is meant to go "great", its fucking hard

also i think guitar is about grinding technique until you can do 1 thing (song) really well, and at that point you will be able to do many songs really well. so i've been OK just learning a very small number of things rather than caring about whatever broadness of songs etc rocksmith offers

Guitar in my experience has gone great and has never been hard. At least because I've never been frustrated about what I couldn't do but more excited about what I could.

But I think my difference in mindset is because I was already a composer/producer of music before I started playing. At first it was fun as a composition tool but I didn't mind being bad because I wasn't actually recording any guitar at all for a year or more of playing. Putting your hands on the guitar and having something unexpected come out could be really frustrating for another player but for me it allowed me to write things I wouldn't otherwise, so lack of skill if anything resulted in more creativity. And it's been a creative process in general.

I've spent very little time learning and rehearsing music though, or anything that involves grinding. Anything I've done that resembles grinding was still an exploration fueled by curiosity and not just grinding to meet an end goal of being able to play well.

But from the perspective of having done it this way I don't think I'd recommend rocksmith either, although I haven't used it myself. I have hardly used tab but I'm thinking of learning to sight-read music notation and that's an actually useful skill. If I were going to do something rocksmith-like I would do that, even if it might be harder, because what you learn seems more relevant. But I haven't actually used rocksmith and it might be fun for some people.

--

I feel a little lost in the world of guitar as I've mainly explored what I've naturally been curious about, coming into it already writing my own music and everything. I've never set out to be in a band or play anything live or even jam with people (or learn a song in full to be able to play it just for the sake of playing it) so I've been happy with what I've done so far. But I've loved playing so much I see it being a lifelong interest so I feel somewhat inclined to learn the things most average players would learn so I can be a sort of all-around guitar player. Any advice about what to do/work on? Maybe I'll try learning some songs since it should be a lot easier now than a year ago.

I've spent a few hours with it. It's okayish but I don't really like it compared to normal practice. I find that I retain very little of what I learn, song-wise, from the game because of how it breaks up songs. Something about the pacing and of how it teaches songs also feels off to me. I understand that they want people to learn the root notes and chords of bits of songs before getting to the "meat" of them but it just felt way too slow paced to me. But then again I've been doing music stuff for more than 12 years now and started before the rise of all these newer ways of learning so stuff like Rocksmith might click better with people not so set in their ways.

On a related note, I spent an hour yesterday looking for my metronome before realizing that I could just get an app on my phone that could do way more powerful stuff than my old metronome (I did find it by the way). I guess I'm an old geezer guitar player.

edit: I think I'm gonna buy a Jackson Kelly. I can get a Jackson Stars one with EMGs, ebony fretboard, mother of pearl inlays, neck through, original Floyd Rose, mahogany body, and a hard case for under a grand. I was gonna get a Gibson but the one I wanted sold (and the buyer cancelled but now I'm kinda not wanting it even though I could get it) but I've put in like 6 hours of playing on my beloved Jackson Soloist the last couple days and it's making me want more Jacksons really badly. After comparing it to my newer Ibanez, I just adore the Jackson neck profile so much more. Also, I've always wanted a Kelly because Marty Friedman.

Just got a Fender american standard strat with the CS fat 50's pickups, a little late X-mas present for myself. It's a beautiful guitar, and plays pretty well I think (been spoiled by my JEM77VBK the past few years, makes other guitars a bit tough to judge fairly lol..). Will give the ibanez a rest for awhile and get more used to the strat, I'm sure it will grow on me. =]
It does have a lovely retro sound to it though that I think I will use on some future projects and sessions.

My dog sure likes it at least. ^_-

Ibanez necks (well at least the two I have) are much more flat than Jackson necks. Jackson necks are still quite thin (not Ibanez thin but thinner than something like a Fender) but they have a certain roundness and fullness to them that I find quite comfortable.

Allow me to offer a contrary opinion to the ones above. Rocksmith 2014 is basically built to solve the exact problem you're having.

Like, I completely agree that if you really want to learn guitar you need to make use of other sources like justinguitar.com or even a real teacher. But the thing it does is help you get over the first 40 or so hours when you feel like you can't really play anything that isn't just repetitive chord practice. If you're struggling with motivation, it could be the thing to get you to pick up the guitar more often, and the more time you spend with it in your hands, the easier it is to get the hang of it.

What does this even mean? Rocksmith literally just gives you scrolling tabs in a 3D format.
