Does anyone have experience with loop stations? I'm looking to get one but I don't know the best way to set this up. I want to be able to play acoustic instruments (guitar, cello, percussion) along with a keyboard. I'd like an easy, affordable setup that doesn't sound terrible.

I have a Boss RC-2 loop station. It's simple, intuitive and comes along with a few drum patterns. You can make loops upon loops which one of the coolest thing ever to do as a guitarist (so you can add licks upon licks upon licks) and save them for later use. When playing with heavy distorted sound, your sound system might saturate if it's not powerful enough (e.g. my 25W amp (not a valve one) saturates really quickly when using RC-2 and full overdrive). With the proper cables, you should be able to connect it in between a keyboard and an external sound system. I don't think it can work with the built-in speaker of your keyboard. The RC-2 is now retired and has been replaced with the RC-3 which is around 200 bucks.

Regarding Paco de Lucia, it's sad and he was still young... and i'm still not able to play Asturias correctly (besides the intro).

Thank you
Yes, they are fun to play, but they are also great songs to practice. They aren't easy but not too fast and difficult to learn so that you have a lot of real practice time for your technique.

I might do "Pull the Plug" and "Lack of Comprehension" as well in a few weeks

It's unreal how fast "wow I'm progressing so fast!" and "fuck this piece of shit guitar I'm stuck what the fuck" alternate in my mind.

And I need to practice more.

I know that feeling! Everytime I practice sweep picking I think "well, you are getting better and better"
Next day: I try to do the same things at the same tempo and what happens is basically like I am holding a guuitar for the first time ever...

Pretty relevant: Guitar Center's having pedal month now. Pedal's are 15% off in store.

Awesome tip!

The question is what pedal to get...

I would want a wah-wah or loop I think... Polly a loop...

Any suggestions for great pedals in general from anyone? (I don't have any yet!)

If you don't have any pedal, a disto/overdrive one is a safe choice. Loop station are generally expensive but it's incredible to play alone or to do kickass solos. Wah-wah are great too, but i would recommend it only if you want to play a lot of songs with it since it's a bit gimmicky. Depending of the sound effects you have on your amp, you can go for fuzz/chorus/octaver that are as gimmicky as wah. And finally, you can just improve your sound with compressor/eq/noise gate.

you have to practice each hand separately. I'd recommend trying a repetitive motion on each hand and then blend the two. it takes forever just keep trying.

I'm trying to work on my groove.

Following this guys advice. Any thoughts?

Have you sat down and made your fingerings thought out.

Are you bending with no other fingers for support?
Are you bending using your wrist or just your fingers? - if you want a whole step or more reliably then you probalby shuold use wrist more.

Do you know which strings you are goign to pull or push and when?

Mechanics over ;p

a good practise is to play the note you want to bend to then bend to it. Practise this both slowly and just hitting it as quick as you can - practise with as many different feels as you can. Reaching is ok as long as you identify it as reaching when you do it and then do it right after.

Bends change as your strings age, with humidity etc so there is a lot of feel and adjustment that you cant talk about.

I had a lot of problems for a while - still do but i'm a hell of a lot better now - it turned out for me that i didn't have the note i wanted to hit firmly in my mind. So when i started to sing what i was playing things started to work a bit more regularly. When you can play a note and then sing the note you want to bend to when your bending for some reason just works that little bit better.

that may be confusing. Several steps
1) play the note you want to bend to fix it in mind then bend to it
once you start to get that
2) play a note, sing the note you want to bend to and bend to it. You may find you need to practise being about to know what note you are about to bend to. Thats where my real problem was

a little every day.
2) helps a fuck ton in all kinds of places especially if you like to or want to improvise.

If its not a musical problem and its an execution problem then thats just practise practise practise, every single place you bend and every single degree you bend to is slightly different. Its hard as fuck - i still have some bends i know i fudge regularly. IE if its an e minor shape ill play a D# shape and bend it all up, then a D shape and bend it all up again.

One thing i try to do is take simple stuff and make it simpler, then try and play it only using half step bends then whole step bends. Then start messing about with prebends etc. Just really really practise it out of context. You can do some quite cool stuff.

hope that gives you a few ideas you may not of had.

Oh what gauge strings do you use? A lot of bend heavy guitarists use surprisingly light strings - you can solve tone elsewhere because you gain a ton in terms of feeling and expression. I used to use 11, im on 9 now. Eg Billy gobbons uses incredibly light strings Billy Gibbons string guage

That's a very goog advice!

I did something similar:
1.: Play a note and slide from the fret you are playing to the note you want to bend to. (eg. h-string 15->17)
2.: Play the 15 and bend
3.: do this again and again. You can repeat it quite quickly all over again and again to get a good feeling for the tone you want to bend to.

Thanks for your advice!

I think my mechanics are fine since I usually go too high and have more finger strength than it's necessary to bend properly (maybe except for 1 finger bends). I was learning bending technique from JustinGuitar's videos so I always use my wrist and as many fingers as possible.

I use 10-46 or 10-52 (I like to play around sometimes so I tried some 9 and 11 sets in the past). I should say that I tune my guitar half step down. I sometimes like to strum a little bit harder when I play some rhythm parts so 9s seems a too light because they like to buzz a lot and I don't want to trade even more string action for it. I considering using a light set just for sake of learning bends.

I think you are right that I need to focus more on what note I want to bend to because right now it's like i'm bending and after it i say "oh, that doesn't sound right". Lately I've found out that when I try to play some songs with bends it seems much easier that when I fooling around because I have the exact note in my head.

yeah sounds like me. kinda feel for you, its a hard road
I kinda forgot with all this practice that music is about the music and ended up worrying about technique instead of stuff that sounds good. Kinda like sweeping, i can never use it in improvisation, sure i arpegiate chord shapes over scales etc but sweeps for anything other than their percussive sound (cant think of the word im looking for) .. kind of like a rake ... never seem to fit.

If you are tuned down on 10's they probably feel like 9's anyway. Also i don't think its the low end thats hard to bend right - its almost as if you have more tolerance in ear to low tones. Its the transition between g and b string that is tough i think because the thicknesses and often kind of string differs there. Again i focus straight on technical details

I tried 7's once btw. Hated them.

Learn lots of slow blues. Another thing i did was learn slide guitar stuff but bend instead (elmore james). Eg the solo to just got paid today (I havent figured out most of it tbh), tush, still got the blues (gary moore) pretty much any bb king (id focus on trad vlues rather than the jazzy stuff though), albert king

try by ear ... its tab that i relied upon too much. this is all cheesy straight up pentatonic stuff

albert king - blues power
bb king - believe to my soul

I don't see 7's woking fine in standard tuning. Definitely I will try some slower stuff.
