How much does a decent job a la what you're looking cost Teo? I know these will vary but looking to stick a guitar in mine to get fixed up somewhat

Em mostly via friends, have a few musician buddies. plus in my case being able to record parts for guitar and bass and vaguely program drums kinda helps too.

Also kind of dropped my own stuff for a bit in favour of just getting playing with other guys. Not sure what it's like elsewhere but I haven't had much luck on Craigslist (or our local equivalents)

50 euros plus pickups (which i found at a crazy bargain price), including new (average quality) 250k pots.

im looking at a budget of around 500-700 dollars interested in a guitar that would work well for drone/doom, something thick and oppressive that sounds good and crisp on clean channel uh i mean i'll try different guitars out - but what should i be looking into? i've heard good things about schecter in that price range

If by "thick and oppressive" you mean something for metal, try out LTD guitars too. The 401 and 600 series should be in your price range and are really great guitars. Jacksons are nice too but i don't know them very well.

If you want something more versatile, when in doubt go mexican fender (note a pattern in my guitar recommendations?)!

I have an LTD EC-1000 which is pretty good, albeit the EMGs that come with it mightn't be to your tastes for doom/drone stuff.

Most of the guys I know who play that kind of thing swear by Les Pauls and the like, or something pretty heavy in terms of the weight and the wood. Really it's a setup thing as well, you'll want a pretty high action and thick gauge strings for the sustain for a start

I'm not too familiar with the genre, but every time I see a new guitar day on different sites where they talk about doom metal, its always a les paul.

The schecter hellraiser is all mahogany with emg's. It's got a really fat sound to it. The other guitarist in my band uses it and it comes out with a really heavy tone when distorted. The cleans sound really nice as well.

This song uses a schecter hellraiser c-7, and you can hear the clean tones at 2:30 and the fade out at the end.

Can't afford a Les Paul

And I like the clean tones on that Schecter but I feel like the distorted bits don't have a lot of weight to them.

What kind of amp do you play out of? The recording was done with guitar rig so its not the best distortion. It's got pretty ballsy low end coming out of his triple rectifier, as was mine when I owned it. I sold it because I preferred the clarity of passive pickups. But I'm not exactly sure what kind of sound your after. Could you post a clip of something?

I use a really old Vox amp that my stepdad owns so I'm going to have to buy a new amp as well. My friend said Line6 is pretty good if I don't want to spend money on pedals but my friend has a bunch of old sustain/distortion pedals he doesn't want anymore

Amp selection also depends a lot on what sound your going for, what pedals you have, and especially how much you're looking to spend.

Post a youtube clip of the sound you're looking for.

I own a line 6 150 watt half stack spider 2. While it does sound great at low volume, when turned it up its very sterile and dry. Not to mention the distortion sounds pretty artificial. The more I try better amps, the more I dislike that amp

As far as guitars go, you should be looking for something with active pickups. The schecter will replicate those tones pretty well, or the ltd's as teoita suggested (they're actually made in the same factory I believe).

While that's not usually a tone I look for when playing amps, I think I can think of a few that would do you well. The first that came to mind was the carvin x100, which is what frank zappa used. Beautiful clean channel and it has distortion like that.

I think the majority of that sound is just pedals though, so you could ultimately get a cheap tube amp and use a bunch of pedals for distortion and effects.

On Wikipedia it says their guitarist uses a les paul through an orange head and cabinet, as well as a variety of different effects. Maybe look into the orange tiny terror as well, if you're looking for a bedroom amp, otherwise they have larger ones haha.

My friend brought one over once to jam. I had a 150 watt amp (solid state) and he just had that and a little 1x12. The mother fucker was way louder than me lol.
