TL ads showed me a link to this monstrosity:

http://www.musicstore.de/de_DE/EUR/-/art-GIT0021585-000?campaign=GBase/DE#FullDetails

Are guitars like that even supposed to be played?

Whenever I may get to the worrying of stage of thinking I'm any good.

Man Shawn Lane must be the most Underrated guitarist i can think of, brilliant in every way, and not to forget that he was very sick his entire life with psoriatic arthritis.

Heres my personal favourite solo, 1st thing i every watched on shawn lane, and was shocked, its very raw, its just shredding, and hes very young, but i always go back to it! :::

I have an LTD EC-1000 which is pretty good, albeit the EMGs that come with it mightn't be to your tastes for doom/drone stuff.

Most of the guys I know who play that kind of thing swear by Les Pauls and the like, or something pretty heavy in terms of the weight and the wood. Really it's a setup thing as well, you'll want a pretty high action and thick gauge strings for the sustain for a start

Got one of those myself, they're great!

Can't stand high action, a good compressor(keeley / wampler) is just so valuable, not to mention all the other options it allows.

Just restrung my gibson LPJ. Have really been favoring my tele the last few months that I forgot what an awesome guitar the LPJ is. Bit heavy though haha, after a couple hours of playing shoulder is killing me!

You should play my LP custom. Thing weighs like 10 pounds :/

But it sounds so good.

If you're still looking for a drone/doom guitar check out the new Ibanez's ARZ 700/800 in a shop near you if you get the chance.
They go for around $500 new.

I can't say much about the clean sound because I've yet to find a nice clean tone (Line 6 UX-1), but my ARZ 800's distortion through a Peavey ValveKing 212 and a Boss ML-2 is very thick sounding, and the sustain is also good with the EMG's.
I sometimes feel like it's too thick.

Can anyone recommend a good guitar shop in New York City?

What are you looking for? If you want a big shiny music store with all the newest stuff Guitar Center on 14th street and Sam Ash on 34th street are the best, unfortunately.

If you want to browse some cool used/vintage guitars and get tech/repair stuff done on your instrument I would go to 30th street guitars on 30th street between 7th and 8th avenues. I love that place, and I get all my guitars serviced there. So much better than the big box shops.

ESP makes some killer guitars.

I got my ESP Eclipse II (not LTD) for $900 on ebay. The LTD EC-1000 can be had within your budget and it's a very nice instrument. Similar to my ESP. Chugga chugga for days.

I have only have a day in New York, sadly. I was thinking I might bring home a guitar as they are much cheaper in the US.
I want to buy used, can't afford vintage stuff.

Hey guys! This year I'll be releasing my first solo album entitled "The Judge."

It'll basically be a guitar circle jerk but it's my first virtuoso album and it will feature a few somewhat notable names in the modern metal / prog world.

This is my debut track, hope you guys enjoy!

I recently added two videos to my YT channel.

1. Death - Crystal Mountain cover

2. Beyond Creation - Coexistence solo cover
I learned most parts of the 2nd song but can't play it completely because I don't own a 7-string guitar :/ I love the solo however so I couldn't resist recording it
I'm thinking about buying a 7-string but I don't want to spend too much money on something only to cover some songs, since my band has been playing and writing for 6-string exclusively.

Anyways, here are the two songs:

What kind of recommendations do you want? Songs to learn? Guitar to buy?
